Arabasta is very likely the correct official spelling, but Alabasta is a legitimate substitute and it's easier to say.
I can accept Alabasta. That is about as far as my leniency goes.

Why doesn't someone go through all the episodes of Robin joining till Enies Lobby and see if she has called Luffy by name, cause I wouldn't be surprised if she has.
it's easier to say.
…
You need some practice rolling your "R's" man...
it sounds more like a proper name
Does it really? o_-
Why doesn't someone go through all the episodes of Robin joining till Enies Lobby and see if she has called Luffy by name, cause I wouldn't be surprised if she has.
But wasn't that Robin's character, though?
It's symbolic that she doesn't until after Enis Lobby. Even if she does call him "Luffy" one or two times, it doesn't make it alright for Funi to have her call Luffy by his name 100% of the time, as opposed to his title.
I was part of that argument. You fail at reading comprehension.
Not really. I remember you being part of that argument. I also remember Lobster being part of that argument too. I would have thought you would have learned by now that I've been leaving names out on purpose. That way I can't be accused of falsely accusing someone if I point fingers at the wrong person. I just assume that those people know who they are.
You aren't?
So… Are you like this in every argument? Honestly I'd rather argue against someone who doesn't insult my intelligence or my reading comprehension. You're not just being uncivil, but just plain rude.
Yeah. I see something inaccurate, and call it inaccurate.
You see something inaccurate, and say "well, it's not as inaccurate as XXXX."I don't care about scale. I don't care how wrong something is. The mere fact that it's wrong, no matter what level of wrong, means it should be corrected.
If I'm writing a story and mistakenly misspell "John Smith", it doesn't matter if I spelled it "Jon Smith" or "Shitbrick McGee." I'm going to fix it if given a chance.
I can understand you wanting to fix the names. I have no beef with that. Though I pretty much believe that Funi would fix those all on their own considering they had to hold to 4kids versions of the names for a bit.
But the thing is the mystery lines and Robin calling the straw hats by title instead of name is a really small thing. It's something that is un-noticable to anyone who doesn't watch the fansubs. Heck I've watched the fansubs of those episodes and I still find those small things un-noticeable because they don't hurt the dub. You're making it seem like these are huge noticable changes that ruin the quality of the dub when in fact they aren't. That's why I keep saying you're making a mountain out of a molehill, and that's why I keep saying you're making a big deal over nothing.
Because outside of you and a couple fansub watchers. Who's really going to care if Funi fixes those things or not? Absolutely no one.
To the AlaArabasta argument Alabasta in my opinion sounds more correct when it's said in english in japanese either which way.
I think the use Arabasta would get some controversy knowing how everything in the states is pretty muhc forced to be politically correct (i'm bad at thinking this stuff when I'm tired as crap)

That argument was about whether or not fansubbers should leave untranslated terms in. My stance on the matter being "It's their fansub. They give it to us for free. They can do whatever the hell they want."

They are wrong. That's the only reason that should be needed to fix them.

No. YOU are the one making a big deal over nothing.
I come in every week, post my impressions (which generally mirror the ones I posted above) and that's about it. There's no BWAAAHing, there's no K-F worship, there's no mountain. You are making it all up.
You are so convinced that it's there that you're seeing it whether it's there or not.
I see a couple idiots bitching about flashes, I see a couple idiots bitching about posts that don't exist, but pretty much everybody else is just posting their responses to the episode.
My thoughts on the Ala-Ara discussion
Remember, Franky was once reffered to as Flanky and even Fanky. Take Toei's english with a grain of salt.

T'wasn't Toei, IIRC. That was from a game.
If we're gonna talk about Toei specific English flubs, let's go with the Water 7 arc where "Icebarg" appears in the anime, whereas Oda wrote it as "Iceburg."
No, I specifically remember there being a misspelling of his name in the anime.
Hm. Well I know "Flanky" was done in Fighting for One Piece. Dunno about the anime then.
@Pass:
No, I specifically remember there being a misspelling of his name in the anime.
There was an "Eranky" and one more I can't recall at the moment.
It should be noted that the japanese flubbing english written or english pronouciated(sp) words is Engrish (a bit cruel but hey)
No. YOU are the one making a big deal over nothing.

Fine. You're right. I'm wrong. I obviously don't know anything. I'm just a complete retard who doesn't know what he's talking about.
You should probably say now without the sarcastic influence. You really brought this converse into the biggest BAWWWWING i've seen on a forum, even bigger than the one's that used to be on Nsider (I'm on Charagons side)

It wasn't even BAWWWing. It was just an argument that I'm guessing neither of us wanted to quit out of stubborness
But I do apologize for being a brainless moron. I can only wish that I could ever be 1% as intelligent as you and Charagon.

I would say your BAWWWWing was pretty much one sided.
Going back, it looks like this is the post that started it all.
@Zulen:
Y'now I'm getting kind of sickened by the "It's better than 4Kids, so it's alright". That's like being diagnosed with HIV and saying "Well, at least I don't have a malignant tumor!". I think One Piece deserves the best of the best dub out there. My expectations certainly haven't dropped after the 4Kids shit, so why has everyone else's?
This is a perfectly valid complaint. Aethos has stated this philosophy several times already along with others.
Aethos responded with…
@Aethos:
Well I get sickened by the elitist that pretty much want One Piece to be shown on TV in Japanese with probably K-F subs since they think K-F is the most accurate translator EVER!
Let's face it. Even if One Piece got the Naruto treatment. Even if One Piece was completely uncut. You would still bitch about every little thing because in your mind it could never compare to the Japanese version.
I for one enjoy the dub. I for one think it's a good dub. I for one think that over time it's going to have the Naruto treatment. But heck if I wanna come into each and every dub thread just to hear you guys BAW because you can't accept that Funi is doing a great job with the dub edits and all.
Honestly if you want to act like how NaruTards have and still do with their dub then go ahead, but heck if I want anything to do with that. I'm just going to enjoy the dub, and then I'm going to enjoy the uncut DVDs while you're still complaining how the uncut DVDs just aren't "uncut" enough for you.
By the way. I'm not pointing any fingers just so you know.
Now at that point, nobody had even mentioned K-F, much less stated that they wanted K-F subs on TV.
Then came the baseless notion that nothing would ever be good enough and the Narutard comparisons. Again, all of it completely without merit.
Your complaints against imaginary posters are the cause of this argument. Nothing else.
Except the FUNi dub isn't anywhere near being "HIV", so you can't really say it's like being diagnosed with that and saying "Well, at least it's not a malignant tumor".
I would say your BAWWWWing was pretty much one sided.

Now you're just throwing salt in the wound.
I admit I was getting a little irritated by the constant bitching in these threads and vented, and I let it get too far. I'm sorry for that. I wish I hadn't said anything at all. :(
That's a much better apology than that last piece of One piece (I could't help it)
Because making me feel bad about myself is the best apology of all. :getlost:
Except the FUNi dub isn't anywhere near being "HIV", so you can't really say it's like being diagnosed with that and saying "Well, at least it's not a malignant tumor".
Oh for crying out loud. Read it again and come back when you comprehend what he was saying.
Oh for crying out loud. Read it again and come back when you comprehend what he was saying.
I realize what he's saying. He's sick of the "Well, it's better than 4Kids!" mentality. I kinda am too.
However… And this is what makes it or breaks it.
He said it's like being diagnosed with HIV and then saying that at least it's better than having a tumor. I really hope he's not substituting FUNi with "HIV" and 4Kids with "tumor", 'cause that just doesn't make any sense.
He's using that analogy 'cause he feels it's similar to this situation. But it'll be wrong if it's structured like how I just put it.
I'm surprised you're surprised considering I very vocally displayed my misgivings about both of them long before we even heard those twenty some seconds of leaked footage back in September.
No you misunderstood, I'm not surprised to hear it from you NOW I'm just surprised you feel that way at all… BUT I haven't seen the Funi actors in any other roles so I think that plays a part of it for me.
R.O.D. TV for one
Dunno who that is =/
Anyway, posting stuff here you'd like to try to get fixed is good, since I hang around, but being more proactive and going to conventions or visiting other sites where the voice actors/writers DO hang out is probably even better. Some even have blogs, right? So feedback is exactly what they're looking for in those cases I'm at the lowest level of the ladder so anything I send along has to go through many other go-betweens, so it might not seem as direct or urgent coming from me.
Any links to where we should go? How about a phone number we should call? I couldn't find Funi's number anywhere…
If you want those lines to be fixed for the DVDs (assuming they haven't already), then you should make some noise about it now while there's still time.
bangs pots and pans and plays loud music
ROBIN NEVER CALLS LUFFY OR ANY OTHER MEMBERS BY THEIR FIRST NAMES AT THIS POINT
that loud enough? =D
He said it's like being diagnosed with HIV and then saying that at least it's better than having a tumor. I really hope he's not substituting FUNi with "HIV" and 4Kids with "tumor", 'cause that just doesn't make any sense.
Yeah I think a tumor and HIV are on the same level… I'd say "I was diagnosed with pneumonia but at least it's not HIV"... oh wait that wasn't what you meant, was it?
Also, what you're talking about - I think the other manga appearances of Arabasta may be in those color walks/data books. I can't remember. I'll try and grab them sometime soon.
Arabasta is used on the map that is on the interior portion of ColorWalk 2's dust jacket. Arabasta is mentioned in the data books as well, but I think that map is pulled directly from the manga.

[hide][/hide]
And Lobster – the Arabasta image you posted is from a company called "Animetopia." They do (at least most) of the official OP shitajiki/pencil boards. That was scanned directly from my collection.
Splendid
Hopefully Funi will realize this before it's too late, and they start narrating the openings to Arabasta, while saying Alabasta, with Arabasta maps.
Or subbing Chopper's attacks as "Boost", when he is saying "Point" in English.
Any links to where we should go? How about a phone number we should call? I couldn't find Funi's number anywhere…
O Mato, Where Art Thou?

He's saying that an unfavorable but manageable condition is worse that one that is completely unacceptable. How is that wrong?
Arabasta… Alabasta... Doesn't really matter. It's the same place. Either way it's the same place though I kinda prefer Arabasta. Just has a better ring to it.
He's saying that an unfavorable but manageable condition is worse that one that is completely unacceptable. How is that wrong?
You mean better.
And yes, I see that's what he's saying. That insinuates that the FUNi dub is still bad. After all, HIV is still a bad sickness. The only one-up it has is that it's not as bad as a tumor.
So it sounds like he's saying the FUNi dub is still bad, just not as bad as the 4Kids dub. And that it still doesn't satisfy him.
That'd be all good and dandy if the FUNi dub was of, say, DBZ dub quality (which actually would fit this situation) but it isn't. I think the majority agrees that it's far beyond that.
Comparing it to any kind of sickness is just wrong. Especially one as dire as HIV.
However, if he's just saying in general… That people shouldn't just like something just because it's not 4Kids -- I agree. But most people don't automatically like the FUNi dub just because it's not 4Kids. They like it because it's actually good.
The thing is. I don't see the Funi dub as being bad. I actually see it as being really good. I see it as being Naruto quality at the moment. Yeah we have the flashes and stuff to deal with at the moment, but soon it'll be just as uncut as Naruto.
I'm sure even Charagon can understand why I don't want to see us become like how the Naruto fandom and Bleach fandom are to their dubs. Because we're going to have that same quality eventually and I just don't want the One Piece fandom to sink that low. As I've said before we're better than that.
I'm not saying it's wrong to complain about the dub, but there's got to be a line drawn somewhere you know?
Any links to where we should go? How about a phone number we should call? I couldn't find Funi's number anywhere…
Best I can suggest is AnimeOnDVD's forums, they have a VA forum and FUNi writers/directors post there sometimes, and then there's people's individual journals/blogs, which I don't know of.
What I wouldn't recommend is setting up an online petition or calling/writing random people at FUNi. It'd be best to talk to the people directly. Which is why cons are so nice. I don't know of any other places/sites, but I'm sure some other people around on these forums do.
LOL. You two are very stubborn. Neither one of you is willing to back down or accept the opinion of the other. Well I'm gonna add some fuel to the fire so to speak. I'm pretty much on Aethos' side. I think that Funi is doing a very good job and because of the rush to get episodes done, some of their mistakes can be excused for now. Yes, they've made some dialogue mistakes and I know that's important to the fandom but this is just the TV dub. The uncut dub will use correct names and may have all the wrong dialogue corrected. But anyway, as I was saying, I think Funi is doing a wonderful job(anything is bettter than 4Kids version) and I'm behind them no matter what they do. As long as it keeps the original music and semi-accurate dialogue then I'm okay.
Oda's referred to it as both Alabasta and Arabasta, so I don't really care which one Funi uses so long as they're consistent with it.
I think the one thing I don't like with Alabasta is that it just sounds way too much like an American mispronunciation in what would otherwise be a genuinely middle-eastern sounding country.
I think the one thing I don't like with Alabasta is that it just sounds way too much like an American mispronunciation in what would otherwise be a genuinely middle-eastern sounding country.
I've never had the opportunity to say this before, but… QFT
And to you other guys… Quit comparing One Piece dubs to diseases. No more full blown malignant devil fruit tumors. No Bleach doesn't give you cancer. And no Funimation One Piece won't give you black lung. Nor will the 4Kids dub give you the black plague.
We need to be united as a fanbase like we were before, during the Golden Age of 4Kids. All united against it.
And that's all I've got to say…

Exactly. Once we get out of the rushed for TV episodes and into the episodes that weren't rushed for TV I'm sure we'll see a huge difference. Besides the DVDs aren't going to be the TV version. I believe Funi said that so I have faith that all the rushed problems will be fixed in the DVD releases.
I know that the TV version is important to those who aren't going to buy the DVDs, but hey you have to expect this level of censorship on TV. If you want the perfect One Piece dub then just buy the DVDs. I know DVDs are pricy but you'll be helping to support Funi in making a better One Piece dub for all of us.
I'm not all too excited at the prospect of buying Uncut One Piece DVD sets that cost $50 for 13 episodes apiece. DBZ fans get something to the tune of 30-35 episodes (or an entire arc/saga) for that price.
I'll be buying Funi DVD's of One Piece, but I really wish they'd give us more than just 13 episodes per set.
I agree. It's way too expensive for the small amount we are getting. I'm certainly not going to buy any filler archs with that price either…
They're doing what Viz does with the Naruto uncut sets. People ate those up, so no reason why they won't with One Piece.
T_T No
Naruto box sets get huge pamphlets and bonus booklets. What do we get? -o-

Well I can agree to that since I wouldn't mind them selling whole arcs/saga's instead of 13 episodes too.
I guess it was just easier with DBZ for some reason. Probably because they milked it dry even after the series was over.
Did we see what the DVDs included Robotnik say NO!
I'm sure the DVDs will be worth the price. Though we really shouldn't compare the DBZ release to One Piece's. After all DBZ has had about as many re-releases as Evangelion.

They haven't really revealed all the details. Just that we're getting 13 episodes, divided in three discs, for the price of $49.99. They said they were trying to release it similar to how Viz releases the uncut Naruto sets… So we could very well get things like that.
Hold up.
49$?
49 fucking dollars?
Am I reading correctly?
I'm not the only one who thinks that's a tad overpriced, am I?
I wants my pirate flag.
This thread is much more tolerable if you skip all the internet fighting.
It's not so much the price, but the ammount of episodes.
I'd gladly pay $49.99 for say… 24 episodes ;)
Like in normal box sets =P
Yeah, definitely. 50 bucks for 13 episodes? When did FUNimation go broke?
You know… too bad it's not 50 episodes for 50 bucks...
