@omae, I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying the expression is awkward and doesn't flow sometime.
I often get called on strange Japanese but that's mostly when I'm with people on Honshuu. I like Honshuu and all but it's like people have a stick up their ass. And that has nothing to do with this, rather the world of uwasa and tatemae.
My best friends on Shikoku pretty much speak the way I speak. It may be a little strange, men using 'wa' instead of 'da' in Kagawa sounding somewhat feminine, not to mention massive particle dropping and the like in Kouchi, but I like it that way.
Also, even though some of the translations I've read of yours, and granted I haven't read any since February, sound like something from Zero Wing, I really don't want to correct you because:
A. We know you put a lot of work and time into it.
B. It makes us sound like know-it-alls
C. Everyone gets the basic point and when they don't there's stephen.Plus, I never know if its just a typo, or if you need a detailed explanation. I mean just correcting someone's work isn't all that great. You can correct it, but to really be a proper teacher, you need to go through the material and possibilities.
If someone hands you a work for correcting, that's one thing, but a simple correction on a hurried message on a BBS is another. I could spend all day correcting the English grammar and spelling of many of the American posters on the board but honestly, it'd make me look like a bigger dick than I am :lol:

A. We know you put a lot of work and time into it.
That's why I want people to correct it, or I would never improve from current stage. I prefer people to reply on forum though, since sending the whole corrected script takes too much time to go over.
B. It makes us sound like know-it-alls
At least you guys know more English than me o.o
Plus, I never know if its just a typo, or if you need a detailed explanation.
Usually, when proofreaders (from scanlation group) correct it, they don't put any explanation. I usually understand why the changes have made, and if I don't understand, I ask… But that doesn't happen often.
If someone hands you a work for correcting, that's one thing, but a simple correction on a hurried message on a BBS is another.
But at least we can fix obvious mistakes :) And I think people here, at least Carley and gerusama, want to improve their Japanese, right? Like me, if there're nobody to fix it for you, we never gonna improve +_+
I could spend all day correcting the English grammar and spelling of many of the American posters on the board but honestly, it'd make me look like a bigger dick than I am
Well, you shouldn't be doing that in every thread ^^; This thread is rather special, that's why I do it.

i live in downtown right across the new city hall that they're building… SJ is the third largest city in CA and in the top 10 in the US. it's not big compared to tokyo or anything but still... it's about as city as cities get.
i'm not sure about fanime. i just heard about it so i don't really have plans to go. i can't go on saturday/sunday cause i have a church youth overnight that i'm running. maybe monday? or even sunday afternoon if i'm not too tired. you going? never gone to any anime/manga thing before...

Oh? Which church do you go? It'd be fun if you go to one of the Japanese church that I visited before :P But there weren't much young people there.
I've never been to any convention, either, but if I don't have any other plan, I might go with some scanlation staff. But there's high possibility I'm heading down to LA.
I like to think SJ as a country side, I <3 country side. Actually, it's about right. Not too city, not too country side. Like Nagoya.

I think all the standard dialect sounds mean, but not intentional. Hrmmm maybe friendly is a better word. For example, Chinese, too. Mandarin sounds elegant, but same time a bit solitude. Taiwanese sounds friendly, Cantonese sounds noisy and scary lol.
I was talking with my housemates the other day, and agreed that in north, the language is elegant, middle is some unknown language, and south and loud/friendly. Do you agree? It works for Vietnam, Taiwan, and kinda Japan. Japan from Tokyo to south. :P

ちなみに、ヌーヨーク = ニューヨーク。 But that's ok because I thought カリフォルニアwasキャリフォルニアfor a while too ^^;;
@May 13 2005, 01:55 PM
yeah, isn't American southern dialect more friendly? I don't know, I've never met so much of them.
Hm, I suppose you could argue so (although I don't know much of the southern dialect either). But in my opinion, in America's case, it's more the whole personality or the feeling of hte people than just their dialects. Comparatively, I think it's safe to say the people from the south are a lot friendlier than most from the north.

**I was talking about America….. but then again, I don't know too many southerners so..... I guess I need to go meet more ^_^;; lol It's just that the ones i've known are more open and loud kind of friendly than the people I know around here.
You were in the Northeast, right ? I can't remember ^^; I got the impression from Boston that they were kinda prissy, but in New York I didn't get that at all. And of course in the Northwest (where I live) everyone's pretty friendly, unless you came from the boonies or something :lol:_

**学校出てから書かなくなったからねー最近は日本語使うのが多いかも。。。うちの家族は英語80%日本語10%意味不明10%ぐらいだったからね。まー意味不明はほっといてほとんど英語だったw
両親は日本から70年代ぐらに引っ越ししたから親の方が一世。これちょっと難しいんだよなー 英語と日本語の違いがこうなる:
parents from japan
parents=issei
kids=niseiparents=japanese
kids=first generation japanese americanまー簡単に言うと日本で生まれた両親はアメリカ人じゃないからここで生まれた俺がfirst generation. でも日系人に言わせると来た人が一世、子供が二世。 両親がアメリカ生まれならルキアさんは三世だよ(but
second generation).俺も学校出てからほとんど使わなくなってるからね。。。日本人の友達少ないし。。。今はゲームとか漫画しか。。。シクシクTT

Carly,
そっか。入力できる文字数が制限されてるんだね。I got it!ところで、前から気になってたんだけど、Carlyは翼ファンなの!?
翼、かわいいよね~。lukia,

失礼しました would be more suitable for the first sentense ^^
I totally agree with Kansai-ben is contageous. I wonder why. Ya know, I'm so used to speak in 標準語 that I don't use 名古屋弁 so often any more. But even if I'm around with 名古屋弁 speakers, I won't be using it +_+ And with 関西弁 speaker, I get that dialect… Maybe it's that much friendly...

GO-CON('05魂)て、滝翼のコンサートタイトルなんだね~。知らなかった!
Go-con means "matchmaking party" in Japanese.(合コン)
You know?
以前ミュージカル(Millenium Shock)を観にいって、翼をナマで見たよ~。
可愛かった!
私はKinKi Kidsのファンなの。SMAPも好き~。ジャニーズのコンサートは楽しいよ~。
