Arlong Park needs more Metal. So here we discuss the greatness of Heavy Metal.

Starting from the small town of Birmingham England and now having millions of fans worldwide and even more concerned parents still trying to abolish its existence, Heavy Metal still stands as one of the most ever-changing (but sometimes fucked-up) genres out there.

So to start off, here I shall list examples of bands in their respective genres. ALL ARE UP FOR DEBATE!!!!!! I'm also going by bands I've heard songs from and probably most of this forum has heard songs from and heard of.

I don't typically like metal music, but they're a sort of progressive metal/art rock sort of band. And are incredible.

This list could use some Kataklysm and Mastodon, however. And Exodus.

I've been getting really into Heavy Metal lately and let me tell you Pandora is one of the best web-sites for discovering obscure, not well known, but awesome heavy metal bands.

Edguy (famous German metal band)

AVANTASIA!

okay, well, Avantasia isn't really a band. Tobias Sammet, the lead singer of Edguy, did this solo project where he wrote the music and lyrics for this entire opera, with a storyline and great characters (similar to Coheed, but better). Anyway, he gathered a bunch of famous musicians (including singers from Helloween, Gamma Ray, and Stratovarius; drums by Alex Holzwarth from Rhapsody of Fire [another great Italian metal band] and Eric Singer [who was in KISS and Black Sabbath]) to sing on the albums.

The best part about the albums (called The Metal Opera and The Metal Opera Part II) is that the lyrics are actually the dialogue spoken by the characters, and each character is played by a different singer. It's some of the greatest metal I have ever heard so if you have any spare time check out Avantasia.

Also, they have a new album coming out soon called The Scarecrow.

My iPod has mostly metal bands. But, my favorite of them has to be In Flames. I have most of their albums (I might be missing only one).

Hmm will check out Tool and In the Flames, since Metal's my fav. music genre, especially speed/power metal.
My fav. bands are Iron Maiden, Dragonforce, Metallica, Stratovarious & Nightwish.
I've been wanting to get into Black Sabbath & Judas Priest but can't seem to find a song of theirs that I really liked so far.
BTW my fav. album ATM has to be Nightwish's Dark Passion Play, their new vocalist's voice is great.

King Diamond's pretty awesome, he's got a sort of falsetto combined with his regular voice that's quite a lot of fun to listen to. I'd recommend his song Cross of Baron Semedi.

And also, Tool's Lateralus is an incredible album.

If you're looking for something heavy yet melodic, I recommend Into Eternity. They combine progressive death with acoustic melodies & vocal harmonies, reminiscent of 70's groups like Kansas or Boston.

"Buried in Oblivion" is their best work, though their new album, "The Scattering of Ashes" is pretty amazing.

And to answer your other question, King Diamond's band Merciful Fate is much better than his solo work.

Yeah, I enjoyed Merciful Fate far more then Diamond's solo work.

In addition to the obligatory Maiden, Sabbath and Rhapsody, I mostly listen to Mokoma (trash), Tumion Kätilöt (industrial) and Apocalyptica (I don't even know the subgenre here). D: But I dunno if I could exactly recommend the former two to anyone here as the lyrics are in Finnish, and just listening to the instruments is, well, dumb.

Dragonforce is a gimmick vehicle for Herman Li to pawn his ridiculously long solos off.

Into Eternity is actually a real band.

Kiss is not really metal, they're a rock band with good looking outfits, but not metal really :/ and about Zepelling even tough they're awesome, they're not metal either, Deep Purple is another one of those bands that helped give birth to metal :D

And now about the list…
-Where the hell is prog metal?!!! XD Dream Theather should be there, Liquid Tension Experiment too, Vintersorg and Opeth (WTH are they doing in Dark Metal? they're a Progressive Death Metal band).
-X Japan should be added to heavy metal, we all know J-Metal or Visual gay is not even a genre xD
-No Kreator in Thrash metal? Come on :D, Testament should be put in too.
-That power metal list needs more Rhapsody, Helloween and Sonata Arctica.
-What is Children of Bodom doing there in Black metal? aren't they melodic death metal? and You should add Immortal and Bathory in That genre too.
-Death Metal: Therion had a Death metal era, it should be there too, Atheist too.
-Symphonic Metal: Therion are probably the fathers of that genre, they should be put in there, and Rhapsody should be on Power Metal in my opinion ;/
-Where are Snot, Deftones and Soulfly in the Nu-metal genre? and Linkin park are not even metal really, they're a rock band (Disturbed too).

You should add Viking metal too you know :D Ensiferum and Bathory would be there.

I saw a documentary on VH1 about the history of metal… This one guy traveled around and interviewed people like Dio and the singer from Iron Maiden... It was really interesting, and it made me want to go to that 3 day Metal fest in Germany....

Oh, and the list is missing All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, Bleeding Through, Iced Earth, Archenemy, Kittie, Otep, Shadows Fall and Guns n' Roses...

Arrgh, I almost went to an Amon Amarth concert in Dallas... it was really icey that night, so we didn't go... grr...

hey now Black Sabbath is a fucking amazing piece of music and usually considered for the overall darkness of the lyrics and the fact that it played complete contrast to the time it came out

Some people also look to Jimmi Hendrix, the Kings and Iron Butterfly for the roots, but for the Beginning 2 words Black Sabbath

Oh yeah, I forgot to name a band. I have been lately really digging Stonegard from Norway. Especially their first album. While Americans generally makes the best music, those grazy Norwegian satan worshippers sometimes hits a gold mine (or should I say an oil pocket).

King Diamond - The early Mercyful Fate stuff was awesome - his best stuff - and his first three 'solo' albums were also great with Abigail being the best of the three

Kalmah are excellent, but I only have one cd from them

Gwar are a mess but they have done some excellent songs over the years and their live shows are completely awesome

Into Eternity are pretty good, but I can't stand to listen to them for too long - something there grates on my nerves

Eternal Tears of Sorrow are probably my favorite melodic death metal band right now and are absolutely fantastic

As for more traditional death I'm really digging the two latest from Vital Remains

and I'll cut things short at that

For whomever was looking for a good Judas Priest song, try 'Rapid Fire' if you like speed metal. Otherwise, 'Grinder' isn't a bad listen, and 'You Got Another Thing Comin' are fairly decent, with the latter being my personal all-time favorite head banging tune.

Oh man, I could go on all day about metal. I love it, except the stuff with pointless screaming ie. Bring Me The Horizon crap.

I'm more of a 70s and 80s metal fan, so Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax, most glam bands, Yngwie, Racer X, Cacophony, etc.

But Megadeth are my all-time favourite. They just personify heavy metal to me.

As long as I've listened to Maiden you would think I would have seen them live by now. I think since they're doing a big Powerslave/Somewhere In Time era tour that it's about time for me to actually go. Not sure where since the US dates aren't all up yet, but I'll try and go either here in Columbus or maybe use the show as an excuse to go back to New York. I'd love to see them at Wacken but that just ain't gonna happen (assuming they even go).

Yup, Maiden is awesome live, check their "Rock in Rio" DVD, and about the crowd, even tough there may be old metalheads, Maiden is always getting new fans, so there will be probably old and young people everywhere.

Old people are great, I take one old fart over dozen teenagers anytime. Anyhow, perhaps I should go to see Maiden live the next time they lost themselves here. But meanwhile I can check out this Rock in Rio.
