I realize there are three, possibly four old topics dedicated to GetBackers, but I read through all of them and, aside from the title, they were really specific and didn't deserve a topic on their own - rather, they all should have been merged into a single topic. Since that isn't the case, I made a new one.

      In any matter, a summary:

      @Wikipedia:

The manga tells the story of a pair known as the GetBackers, consisting of Ginji Amano and Ban Mido. The duo reside in one of the seedier areas of Shinjuku in Tokyo, and are often broke and resort to sleeping in their car. Ban and Ginji operate a freelance repossession service or dakkanya (奪還屋). For a fee, they will recover any lost or stolen item for a client. The two boast an "almost 100% success rate" (100% in the anime). Their motto is: "We get back what shouldn't be gone".

However, Ban and Ginji are not ordinary human beings. They each possess mysterious abilities which they use to carry out their many recovery missions. Ban's powers include the "Snakebite", a skill which gives his hands a grip of 200 kilograms-force, and the "Evil Eye" ("Jagan", 邪眼, a Japanese term roughly meaning "evil eye"), an ability to induce minute-long hallucinations of Ban's choosing in whomever he makes direct eye contact with. However, this ability cannot be used on the same person twice in a 24-hour period, and he has to rest between uses. The Evil Eye can also only be used three times in one day. Ginji, on the other hand, can generate enormous amounts of electrical energy in his body for tasks such as attacking opponents, or overloading electronic systems; this has earned him the moniker of "Lightning Lord" (雷帝, "Raitei", a Japanese term also translated as "Thunder Emperor", or "Lightning Emperor").

Despite the simplicity of their job's description, Ban and Ginji's profession often places them into bizarre and dangerous situations in order to obtain the objects they must find. Their targets range from everyday objects such as a video game a school kid has lost to an even much more dangerous object which might just affect the safety of the nation (such as a vital part of an atomic bomb). As such, the plot mostly revolves around the dangerous (yet sometimes silly) adventures they both go through, which is often complicated by connections to the pair's dark and twisted pasts, and a mysterious place called Infinity Fortress (無限城, "Mugenjou", a Japanese term also translated as "Limitless Fortress", "the Infinite Castle" and "Maze City").

There are numerous "acts" in the story. Each act, divided into a number of chapters, describes a different recovery task taken on by the GetBackers. As the story develops, new characters (some with past relationships with Ban and Ginji) are revealed, and details of a shadowy conspiracy involving the GetBackers slowly rise to the surface.

The plotline of the anime is initially similar to that of the manga, but diverges sharply after the 25th episode as the anime attempted to compress the ongoing story arcs into a manageable anime arc with a reasonable ending. The second Limitless Fortress arc is not in any way connected to the one in the manga, though some of the characters featured have also recently appeared in the manga.

My reason for starting this topic is, I intend to read the manga of GetBackers but otherwise, I have virtually no knowledge of the show/series whatsoever. I only just heard about it this morning on Yotsuba's /a/ when someone was comparing it with Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin (both great shounen titles).

I'm curious as to Arlong Park's experience with it. Should I watch the anime? Does the story hold out until the end in quality or does it lag in places? Good or bad ending? That kind of stuff.

I was a big fan of it until a few weeks ago.

Manga is all sorts of awesome up until the card arc, which I find just plain unreadable.

So yea, enjoy the first 15 volumes. You'll probably have to buy Tokyo pop's releases like I did to get that far into it though.

The series is 30+ volumes in length…so everything after the first fifteen would be bad? How bad? Compare with Naruto, Bleach etc.

I've made it half way through volume 17 and decided I just can't read anymore.

The whole card concept is stupid. Plain and simple.

I guess compared to bleach, the arc feels a little bit like a rehash of infinite fortress. Protagonists are going into enemy stronghold to complete a job and badguys basically have control over just about every aspect of…everything. but instead of it being in an electronic fortress or whatever, and being the home place of many of the characters keeping it interesting, it's really just boring fights using card monsters.

What caused me to quit was Ginji fighting that kid. Kid was fighting, but really deep down didn't want to fight and ginji saves him by fighting him blah blah you love your mom blah blah blah dont talk shit about your mom cuz I didn't have one blah blah, until he reveals, of course, that everyone else is stronger than him and that he has 24 hours to beat them or else he dies(the kid).

That's about where I lost all desire to continue the series. I may start again some time in the future to see if it picks up(since I really like the characters alot) but that pretty much killed it for me.

Diz-amn…That's a shame, I really liked the anime. I was thinking of reading the manga when I got around to it, but now it doesn't seem worth the effort.

I don't want to defer people from reading.

Terek said there were 30 volumes out, so I may just have different tastes, and I'm sure once the card shit is scrapped, and characters are more involved in the plot, I'm sure it gets better.

As far as I remember the cards do not reappear again outside of that arc. The next arc is about shido(spelling?) and his clan's old enemy.

It does get better after the card arc. The anime is awesome too even if the ending is filler.

You should try restarting it. The cards were only one arc(which I think ended in volume 18), then it's more normal action.

As of yesterday I have all 20 volumes released in the US. In fact I only collect like 5 series myself so that's saying a lot.

I have a couple of the Dvds for the anime and I enjoyed them, I doubt I pick anymore up, but that because I'm more a manga man myself.

                          Oh thank god.

I was going to read them eventually(I bought them after all) but the shido stuff sounds interesting.

I guess one bad arc per series is acceptable.

I recommend the anime, the battles are generally good, plus the light-hearted humor in general of the series, although the ending is kinda abrupt. I've never read the manga, is it any better than the anime? What are the major changes compared to the anime?

I'm starting with the manga, it'll be less intensive on my laptop, but volumes are notoriously difficult to find, almost as tough as Mahoromatic. =/
