@Le:
He doesn't want Luffy's VA to be a girl. He just wanted him to sound like a kid, and not that many guys exactly have a childish voice. Hear Goku in Japanese for example. and by the way, Luffy wasn't played by a kid in the 4Kids dub, that was also a woman.
BTW I love how you called other languages 'funny talk'…rolls eyes
I know that Luffy was a woman in the 4kids dub. I dunno if I mentioned it in my previous post but I will now. I have always thought the 4kids VA's voice TONE fit Luffy. After hearing the voices in the videogames, I sincerely believe a big problem was the dialogue and directing coming from 4kids' studio. All the english voices, aside from Vivi's, is atleast twice as good as they are in the tv dub. Luffy's VA still needs acting lessons but as far as the voice itself, it fit him well in my opinion and was in the same casting vein, a girl with a kind of goofy, wild young boy sounding voice? I'm sorry it's hard to explain,but it had a similar style to Luffy's seiyyu. And it was a woman that played a young boy's voice convincingly enough.
I am well aware that Fleur is french. I was talking about the numbering in Robin's hana hana moves being in spanish. I have no idea what you mean with the goku thing..Are you saying Goku is a girl in Japanese? I am well aware of that as well, and I prefer(kid goku's atleast) voice in japanese. Parts of his personality are completely ignored with the way he was cast in english in order to 'macho' his voice up for the american db fans. In japanese he sounds like a cute, naive kid. In english he sounds like a dumb as a board, rowdy toddler who just LOVES to fight. In Japanese goku tends to sound like he's playing and not taking things too seriously or maybe like he doesn't understand what's happening most of the time. He doesn't sound that way in english and the 'cuteness' in his voice is completely ignored.
Oda himself? Toei is NOT Oda. I don't really want a kid to do Luffy's voice either, but I won't be angry if they find one that does the voice well. I'd rather have a guy that could do the voice or a female if she can do a manly enough voice. Not that Luffy has a deep voice, but he doesn't sound like a girl, even if his Japanese voice actress is one.
Did you read the entire interview? Justin Cook CLEARLY says they got notes from a higher up, the man who without him there would be NO ONE PIECE(in other words the creator of the series aka Eiichiro Oda) that he wants Luffy to be voiced by and adult women. Justin Cook basically says that he doesn't think an american audience will find a woman believable as a young boy and that he doesn't realize how many talented voice actors FUni has recently hired that could play the role more convincingly.
Which basically means they're going to do what they did with FMA. I attended a FMA voice actors panel last year @ a con where they discussed casting the dub actors. One of the things the japanese creator wanted for the english dub was that Alphonse be voiced by an adult female actress,not a kid. Funi basically vetoed the creator and cast who they wanted. It sounds like they're going to veto Oda as well. I really feel there are tons of female Va's whocould pull off Luffy better than the children I've heard in Funi's dubs,but if the voice fits I won't complain. It just annoys me that they automatically say 'we're not casting a girl because they'll sound to girly' without even looking for a possible match. Like I said before, the 4kids voice actor was a woman who played an adolescent boy convincingly.
I didn't 'miss' Loguetown, I simply think that it may be a miss romanization. Even if you can find connections and reasons for the name Enel or Logue, that doesn't disprove or prove anything considering just a many arguments can be made for the meanings behind calling him Ener or naming the town Roguetown. So unless it's clearly stated in the SBS the reason behind the naming then it's kinda unclear which to go with.
BTW about Kaizoku's translation..they did translate Berri as Belli in the beginning didn't they? As well as that whole thing about the Pirate Summit, that wasn't really an accurate translation as well,right? Just because they're right most of the time, doesn't mean they're translation is the hands down, never been wrong, way everything in OP MUST be translated is all I was saying.
@COsmic, about Naruto being given special treatment.
Mato said that when CN told them Sanji couldn't have his cigarette, they pointed out that characters in Naruto,which airs right before them was allowed to do it. But CN didn't change their minds about anything. Naruto also gets away with showing more blood and violence than ANY of the other Toonami shows. It was obvious from the beginning that because of the giant naruto fanbase in america that Naruto was probably gonna get special treatment anyway.
