I figured I'd post this since there might be some fans of GiTS here. Seems like there will be a live action GiTS movie in the future.

I Enjoyed the Series very much hope the movie comes out good
I didn't even know about this until my boyfriend told me about it, so I searched to see if it was true and found some new info:

You should've added 'directed by Spielberg' in the title Lucci, that would've attracted more people's attention.
If Blade Runner didn't exist I'd be scared. But Blade Runner does exist. I hope for the best and for Chrissake I hope they leave it with at least a Japanese lead.
Now this can make a good live action movie. If they made the movie Ultra Violet then they certainly can pull this off.
Hopefully DBZ and Hellsing will turn out well though. Despite my low expectations.
Still, I didn't like GITS that much except for the art. Perhaps I will enjoy it more in live action.
Im not too hopefull. Unless Spielberg is a true fanatic of the series, and i know its impossible to get everything right so im willing to give him some head room, its gonna bomb. And unless the actors are fans of the series, *looks
I don't really know what to think yet I didn't really like Spielberg's sci-fi films
If the Director where to be Ridley Scott that would be another story

How about Michel Bay?
It could feature the young teenage years of Motoko growing up in highschool, while being picked on for not being human.
Wouldn't that just be the best?
If they can get Yoko Kanno to do the score for the movie, this should be good.
Yay more jumble of confusion.
Man i at least i think this will be good at least.
This also show my one piece live-action is coming closer and closer
Um….Spielberg isn't directing or anything. He's talking about it since it would be dealt with by Dreamworks.
Can someone make a list of all the live action manga/anime movies we are getting? So far we've got:
Dragonball
Transformers
Speed Racer
Hellsing
Ghost in the Shell
Voltron
I believe I'm forgetting a few.

Are you just doing the ones made into live action in America? Or all of them as a whole?
.>
Voltron got a live action?
@Lobster: American, I guess. Considering I think Japan has probably done quite a few live actions.

You missed my point I was trying to say that Ridley Scott probably would be a great Director for this type of movie

I must correct my phrase I didn't really like Spielberg's recent sci-fi films

It seems nothing is defined yet but some news point to Spielberg being the one to take the director chair
But I have faith that this will be a great movie
Also speaking about Live-actions I heard that Captain Harlock is getting one
Absolutely no news suggests anything about Spielberg directing.

All it says is that he likes the story, and he helped his studio aquire the rights. Like Memoirs of a Geisha.

Your right it was a mistake in one of the sites I saw the news on they already changed it to say Spielberg is only a fan and is helping his studio acquire the rights but they still leave a possibility that Spielberg being a fan might actually want to direct the movie
Spielberg is fan of this series?

Hope he does tho.
So, this is going to based on the original movie/manga right? Not Stand Alone Complex? (I'm not a fan of the series and have barely seen any of it, I'm just making small talk.)

Hopefully it's of the movie and not S.A.C. I actually like S.A.C. but it's definately not as worthy of getting a movie made of it, unlike the original. Here's hoping passion is put into this film and that it attracts a whole new audience to GiTS.
I really don't see what would be the point of making a Live action remake of the crappy first movie then again I was never really big on GiTS.
@Sandai:

You just answered your own question….
Not everyone hated the original movie.
So apparently the movie has it's female lead.

bangs head on wall
I do not have a problem with it, it was obvious that a blockbuster would not really do the first movie, with the philosophical and psychological themes at its center, justice but having someone like ScaJo as the lead can attract more viewers and probably increase the budget with her involvement which in turn can maybe lead some people to the original movie.
The people who know what GITS is most likely won't like having ScarJo as the lead. They probably won't like that it will be mostly white actors and it probably won't take place in Japan because that wouldn't make sense with it's most likely all white cast. So if they're going to change the cast and the setting and since this is hollywood, probably the plot, why even call it GITS. The people who know what the brand is will be disappointed and the people who don't know what the brand is wouldn't care.
Im still not convinced this is getting made and I'm open minded enough to withhold judgement till I at least see the trailer but im not happy about this and I expect it to suck huge monkey dicks.

What do you mean most likely
They been shitting on it since the news first broke.
My only purpose in life is posting this video.
Edit: Lol, i love you open minded guy that thinks everythings gonna suck monkey dicks.
What's even the point of Cyberpunk if it's not in Asia.
Even Philip K Dick filled Blade Runner with Asian shit and basically said what I just said anyway lol.
"Batou, we have to stop the puppet master! He's taken control of BP and will poison the californian beaches! And we have to win the surfing tournament!"
I don't see the problem. Scarlett is just the Majors current sexy bodymodell.
Also I want to ask if somebody knows how the Resident Evil fans racted to the movies and Milla J.
Resident Evil was actually set in the US though. Raccoon City was set in Colorado or something like that, and the leads are named Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. There's a lot more leeway with RE than Cyberpunk Japan

Literally the first person I thought of who should have taken the role.

Her with this group of artists, and a great director, solid writer, and a killer musical score.
Slightly nsfw
!
One can only dream.
I Think Cyberpunk is now valid everywhere, not just Asia. Of course, the religious part (Well, not religious solely more like existential) will suffer but the rest of world now can now reflect also the mains points of cyberpunk and GitS which isn't only Technology but something more phylosophical. A few years back maybe the idea would have been too strange for us but nowadays i think it might work.
And hey, no matter what they do they can't touch the original manga and anime. That is an already done deal. If a lousy adaptation is enough to destroy your love for what was it adaptated from…well, maybe you don't love it or understood that much to begin with.
Well said Prism, if someone really wants some serious psychobabble s/he can watch the anime series again.

Since my username is inspired by William Gibsons novel Neuromancer (the foundation of Cyberpunk) i'd like to share some further input. Infact, the plot in this masterpiece of a novel, takes place everywhere, Chiba, USA, cyberspace and even space. All kinds of people were involved all over the world.
I get the same international vibe from GitS, especially the manga GitS 2 Manmachine Interface. Furthermore the first Matrix movie was also inspired from Gibson and had all kinds of ethnics in it. So I want to point out that Cyberpunk isn't exclusively japanese, or has to be in Japan, but rather is international, connected through the cyberspace. On top of that we have androids, advanced surgery, robots and body models in the GitS-universe. So, yeah it really doesn't matter where the plot takes place and how the characters look like.
AND Motoko can hack herself in every cyborgperson in the world (and be that person the whole movie), and section 9, likewise, can be departed everywhere where they are needed.

I'm talking the visual aesthetic. Which is ALREADY epitomized by Japan (in the nice way) and China (in the bad way lol).
Nowhere else has that vibe. Europe sure as shit doesn't. And I live in probably the most technoed up urban sprawl zone of the New World and aside from Times Square it doesn't really fit the bill quite either.
And since this is a movie, a Hollywood movie no less, visual aesthetic matters for a lot.

Alright I've never read the second manga, but I've read the first, both GITS SAC seasons, and both movies.
And uh no, international they are absolutely not.
Even that one episode in Germany in SAC really dispensed of the cyberpunk vibe. Europe just loves it's old buildings even in the near future I guess. :/

Cyberpunk in literally only the conceptual sense huh? How boring.

There are a lot of works in French comics that captures in extraordinary ways the Cyberpunk feeling. Both in asthetic and ideology. Right now i have a blank in my head about names tho. You can also argue that The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick is Cyberpunk (Altho' not in lavish technology way). The thing is Cyberpunk has been around for a while so the form has changed and The image is not the only way it exists. And even if it's Hollywood going just by Aesthetic and rescinding everything else wouldn't make for a good Cyberpunk piece.
Maybe the influence of Noir clashes too much with the technological side of Cyberpunk. A lot of new comic in image comics mix them and you can see very different results in manner of argument and style.
Also, this is just the spur of the moment but i want Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais voicing some tachikomas. Why not?

The visuals? Ok, I give you that, the GitS anime nearly solely shows Tokio. But it's an undefined future so London, Berlin or Baltimore or even Tarent (because refugees) can be a sprawl, old buildings or not.

I'm not sure what do you mean by that, but this genre gives you some more possibilities than the usual War and Peace. Like, mindfucking people while fighting robots with explosive flechettes.

. . . . . . . it's Tokyo.
Sorry, but 4 years of college Japanese and 10 months in Kyoto I have to correct it.

I is more Cyberpunk than the y :B
I don't think cyberpunk itself should be limited to asia or only asian people. The matrix is the first example that comes to mind. My problem is that GITS takes place in asia and has asian characters. There's no reason not to use asians unless you're going to change the brand. If you're going to change the cast I will almost guarantee that they will change the setting and the plot/themes. At which point why even call it GITS. It will have nothing to do with GITS except that it's cyberpunk. That is how I see this. Something in vain of the DBZ movie, and The Avatar movie. It probably won't be as bad as either of those as a movie and an adaptation. It might be an OK flick but it won't be GITS.
Also knowing that won't ruin GITS for me, that would be stupid and I don't think anyone in this thread is that stupid.
