The return of ran fan made this chapter all the more better. I almost forgot about ran fan to be honest.

Hm, the ending had a kinda deus ex machina feel to it.
Conventional wisdom would seem to point to Pride actually being stronger in total darkness. It's a good thing that the distinction between shadow and darkness was made, as most other forms of media lump the two together. Great seeing Gluttony back in action too.

We've had Deus Ex Machina before; most of them have been explained in the following chapter via flashback. Hopefully Ran Fan's appearance will, too.
-
I wouldn't consider it that Deus ex Machina. We knew she was coming back SOMETIME, and with the Xing power of sensing presences, finding Ling and/or homunculi shouldn't be that hard for her.
I wonder if Fu is there too?
-
isn't fu that old guy?
-
I thought he was Ran Fan's grandfather?
-
What the heck is Deus ex Machina (it's not the comicbook, is it)?
Who else say that the only way to fight this darkness thing is by finding and killing Salem/Pride?
-
1.(in ancient Greek and Roman drama) a god introduced into a play to resolve the entanglements of the plot.
2.any artificial or improbable device resolving the difficulties of a plot.
An example would be if at the end of a story or something, we find out that the character was actually dreaming it all, and thus it never happened. More often than not, people use it to refer to an unexpected, god mode-like power up.
I though this was Dues ex Machina-esque because last we heard, Lan Fan and Foo had returned to Xing, and they weren't going to find an automail mechanic right away. Now she reappears from out of nowhere in the nick of time to save everyone complete with a new arm. Now, granted, there was a somewhat vague timeskip, but there was nothing indicating that the Easterners were coming back.

Wouldn't by that logic Sanji's intervention with Jabra's killing strike at Sogeking also be a Deus ex Machine device? I mean he comes out of nowhere.
Personally I always interpreted it as the intervention of higher power. This doesn't necessarily indicate godlike power, but stronger power then those who are helped are able to wield in that moment. Such as Dragon stopping Smoker for instance.
-
Hmm, I wouldn't consider that Deus ex Machina. We knew Sanji was in the area, and (in the anime at least, dunno about the manga) we saw the bathtub about to fall on him, which cancelled out his weakened state.
With Lan Fan, the last we saw of her was when she was heading back to Xing, without an arm. It's far more believable to have Sanji save Usopp given that we knew he was nearby and his status. Lan Fan's case is much more extreme.
-
I see. So it's the element of total surprise that makes it for you right? Nothing wrong with that. I just wanted to understand your point.^^

That's not what I remember. I distinctly remember her asking Ed about automail and then her and Fu setting out specifically to find an automail mechanic, and she vowed that she would get one and heal within half a year (to Ed's one year) so that she could return to the fight.
-
Her showing up with no build-up in a big fight just in the nick of time to save everyone doesn't strike you as being just a tad too convenient? I know it's for dramatic effect, but it just made me go ''Yeah, sure. Whatever.''
-
I see your point, but wait until the next chapter to lay full judgment on it.
-
wait till the series ends than complain, there I said it.
-
Yeah, this has the same tone as the chapter not too far back where Scar was seen running away with Winry. At first you thought, "What the hell's going on?" but then in the next chapter you got the whole story.
-
I honestly believe that this mangaka likes tarantino films (which if so isn't a bad thing at all =D)
-
New TV anime season pretty much confirmed:
"The wraparound jacket band on the 20th volume of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga will confirm on Friday that a new television anime series is in the works."
-
Thanks for the info! Still no info on whether its gonna be a sequel or based off the manga tho…
-
If it's not gonna be a total re-make of the anime starting from chapter 1 and being totally faithful to the story's plot characterization and style, it'll suck.
-
I don't really see how they can do a sequel unless they cronicle Ed and Al's WWII adventures. I'll be keeping a weather-eye on this development.
The way Ed's drawn on that cover looks like a throwback to Arakawa's style in the beginning where everyone was rounder.
-
haven't they allways been round looking? and I for one am not excited about a new FMA anime unless it follows the manga's storyline.
-
holy shit, I never really notice how greatly art styles improve while i'm reading a series until going back to old chapters.
-
There's already a thread for this I think.
Anyway, that's good news.
-
Several threads, actually. As a rule of thumb, if the news was posted on Anime News Network it's already been discussed to death for several months.
-
well that didn't tell me if it's based on the manga or not. Fucking ANN
-
what chapter should i start on since i finished the anime?
-
Well, the two versions fully diverge around chapter 25, but I'd recommend starting earlier, around chapter 9 or so, because the Lab #5 scenario was when the anime started really changing stuff up, if I remember right.
-
thanks crossword
-
I thought they really started to f things up at around devils nest (I believe that's what former greeds hide out was called)

This would be a great time for God to prove his existance by making this FMA's equivalent of Hellsing Ultimate.
Manga adaptation? Hell yes! Continuation of that horseshit anime? If so, fuck you too, world!
-
speaking of hellsing ultimate has episode 5 been released?
-
^Comes out in Late October.
-
I think I know why they made the anime so much different then the manga…I think it's because the manga was slow, even at that time (even tohugh they did start the anime 2 yrs later)...this time I'm sure it would be a better adaptation of the manga though

It still falls on the Bones for even deciding to make an anime adaptation of a manga which wasn't even coming out that frequently.
-
BONES should stick to making there own crap not ruining other people's work.
-
Anyone know where I can get chapters 82-84 in English? All I can seem to find is 85…

! Glutonyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! :'(, he died as he killed.
! Well pride is getting ready to a big battle, he could not make it. And even if he did, I don't know how well father will take that he ate his brother. -
^lol
! Dunno how Father will react but I had mixed feelings about Gluttony's death XD
So I take it they figured out Pride's weakness? Good action this chapter. Wonder what Olivia was discussing with the higher ups and Father about? -
! Great, now Pride's gonna rape a bitch. And Gluttony's gone, after Homunculus went to all the trouble of regenerating him. Hopefully Hohenheim will be able to beat Pride.
! Dunno what Olivia and Homunculus are discussing, but it can't be anything good. Looks like Roy has a plan, too. -
That was a cool chap.Hope everything goes like it should - for the good guys of course xD
And I hope Hohenheim is gonna kick some ass ^^ -
We haven't seen Gluttony for over two years, and his triumphant comeback is cut short by Pride. Oh well, it was a good run. And I guess the advertisements confirm a manga based anime series. Cool. I shall be looking forward to that.
EDIT: Jesus Christ! Volume 18 doesn't come out in English until May! That's a freakin' seven month wait!
