Yeah, I'm pissed off about it, especially since I pre-ordered it. Out of all the DVDs that didn't get rescheduled it had to be that one, practically the biggest new series ADV has right now, let alone that any North American company has right now. And it doesn't make it any easier for the movie to come out here soon after it does in Japan if they can't even get the T.V. show out. I'm still surprised this show didn't even get on [adult swim]. Unless you just care about fansubs, it's a tough time to be an anime fan.
-

Come on.
You know better than that.
-
Come on.
You know better than that.
I'm kind of surprised and I'm kind of not.
I'm surprised because this is a popular action series from the creators of "FLCL", it's perfect even with these dark times in the [adult swim] programming. I'm not surprised because ADV doesn't have a good track record with television.
-
Well, you've also got to consider several additional things, the first that super robot anime (period) has never been popular in the West; some people just hate super robots in general. The only shows featuring super robots that seem popular are those that also border on real robots; Voltron for example.
The second consideration is that FLCL was popular for being "random" and using a lot of Western rock music. GL isn't nearly as "random" as FLCL was, and the similarities are gone after episode eight. A lot of online people dropped GL fully right after fifteen, if not after eight itself.
Third consideration is the art is ugly. The designs grew on me but I still don't like them, and neither does the vast majority of the Japanese viewers; that CD award was partially intended as a "fudge you" to the otaku who bashed the style and were responsible for Akai's departure from the GL project.
Fourth consideration is the fanservice is too insulting for the Adult Swim lady to accept. It's that kind of tongue-in-cheek fanservice that really irks feminists and people who lean toward feminism (like myself).

All good points, the only one I thought of previously was the fanservice thing. It's a shame, I can't imagine doing at least any worse than "Blue Gender" or "Evangelion", it's definitely do better. "Gurren Lagann" is the kind of robot show that appeals to people that don't usually watch robot shows. Even if it's not like "FLCL" it still has the name recognition and it has its own great merits. And the art style isn't ugly, just different, I don't see most American viewers being turned off by it. But yeah, I see what you're saying, and it's a big loss.
-
Well, from my perspective, seeing Rei undress isn't the kind of "this is insulting to women" fanservice of Yoko's bouncing breasts. Something about caricatures are really offensive to sensitive people, and knowing the Japanese culture which is reputed by many in the business world to be extremely misogynistic, it's not a stretch to believe people would hate that kind of stuff.
I found a single episode of Godannar(this kind of "super robot" fanservice to the extreme) to be worse than all of Gainax's other properties combined, even the original Gunbuster that supposedly introduced the "bounce" as it were (which is a partial MYTH anyway, there was only two or three instances of that in GB!).
-
Whatever, cultural difference, and considering all the other stuff [adult swim] airs I think Kim Manning needs to get off her high horse and realize that just because she finds fanservice offensive or misogynistic doesn't mean a lot of the target audience that watches [adult swim] will, in fact they might just find it so ridiculous that they can't take it seriously (like me).

So, I guess this is the DVD cover? If so I think ADV might have actually done something right.

It says "Manga" but looking closer there's an "Episode 1" medallion on the picture.

It's the color spread from the first chapter of the manga:

Sorry for the double post.I found this from Gurren Lagann LJ comm:
Official TAF 2008 Post, Movie + Music Video Clip Compilation
To avoid misunderstandings, I'll post in this thread all the information currently translated about these future Gurren-Lagann animated projects:Part A: Information from Megami Magazine, as translated by CSakuraS
-It will be a reconstruction of the TV series with a lot of new cuts.
-There's going to be more than one movie, but it will NOT be organized simply like Part 1: Simon as a boy and Part 2: Simon as a man. They won't make it like a straight summary either. "If we're going to tell a story, it will be told in battle. While throwing in new cuts, we plan on making it a work that has the surging hotness that you felt watching the TV version at the forefront."
-Because the dialog won't match up if they're doing a reconstruction, all of the dialogs will be newly recorded.
-They would like to create more new works after the movie. They have many stories from the seven years after Lord Genome was defeated. If the movie is a hit, the possibility of them making more will become higher.
-They're creating several new animated works, a little of which will be shown at the Anime Fair. The staff will differ for each one. Each one will be short, but have the staff's hot feelings packed in. They're still unsure when they'll be able to get these to the fans.
-The short animated works will have music as its theme?
-It seems implied that Nia is the main heroine of the movie, because when asked about the female characters, he replies that it's sad that Yoko and the three sisters might end up in the background.
Part B: Information from the event:
-Early Reports-
Movie:
-Formal name is "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Crimson Volume" (天元突破グレンラガン紅蓮編)
-This movie is Part 1
-The dubbing will all be newly recorded
-There will be new scenes
-It will open in theaters on September 6, 2008
-The theme song will be by Shouko Nakagawa again"Secret project":
The promo for the new Gurren Lagann production is 3/4-minute anime shorts similar to AniKuri
Right now, 8 different ones by Imaishi, Ootsuka, Tsurumaki, Sushio, Yoshinari, and Saeki are in production, and there are plans to make more.-Later Reports-
The new animation project was labeled as Gurren Lagann Music Clips.
Set to Iwasaki Taku's soundtrack, it looks like each animator is doing what he or her wants with his or her own individual styles in the open.
This is the initial line-up, but there are more planned:雨宮哲 - Akira Amemiya - Uniting Can Go Fuck Off!!
板垣伸 - Shin Itagaki - Rap Is A Man's Soul!
小島大和 - Hirokazu Kojima - Boing VS Boing
SUEZEN - Fumio Iida - Baf Baf! Do You Like Being That…Fired Up?
益山亮司 - Ryouji Masuyama - Thrust Through The Heavens With Your XXX!
山賀博之 - Hiroyuki Yamaga - "Libera Me" From Hell
吉成曜 - You Yoshinari - All You Bastards, Get Fired Up!!!
渡辺敬介 - Keisuke Watanabe - Rap Is A Man's Soul!-Teaser-
-
I just watched through episode eight. I tried watching nine after, but really just couldn't. It doesn't feel the same. D:
-
It's going to feel that way for a while, Mister Anbu. But keep at it. Wait until you get into episode 16.
-
damn i hear this so much…i mean i was like dang he gone foreva, but i still kept watching. I never even thought about quitting
-
I stuck it out and holy crap. >.>
This was a fantastic ride.
-
I'm so bloody excited about the shorts, I only just saw the video RIGHT NOW. Gainax put a parody of Garlock's scene featuring Kamina - AMAZING! They better fudging do a Garlock short or I'll…loudly complain on the internet.
-
After a careful re-watch, I've concluded
"吉成曜 - You Yoshinari - All You Bastards, Get Fired Up!!!"
is not Kamina, but it is in fact LORD GENOME! The hair is too long to be Kamina or anyone else for that matter, but it (and the spiked shoulder plates) fit Lord Genome perfectly.
And it makes sense that You Yoshinari is animating it too since he did the GL prologue as well!
RAWS BLOODY WHEN AND WHERE?!

A movie, eh?
Sounds good. So it's basically a the show compiled into one movie or what?
-
Looks to me like they're basically retelling the story in a movie format.
-
Well, if that's the case, then I'm not complaining. It would make a good movie if you ask me.
Although, I'm not sure how they'd do the time skip in a movie.
-
Gurren Lagann music videos announced.
-
Alright, this is getting out of hand
-
How much longer now till Gurren Lagann - the shojo manga?
-
goty, I think you've called down a terrible curse on us. One of the GL MAD projects could end up a shoujo. Or maybe Imaishi will animate that Re:CH parody featuring Simon for real. >_>
-
Why does Nia look like a drunk in that scan?
Anyway this movie had better have enough GAR to match the anime's, and more action. -
more artbook scans
theres apparently 4 of these kinds of artbooks
!
-
Ark's head really does look very Evangelion-like.
-
One Piece is the only series/franchise/property that holds my interest and I only read the manga. Long story short, I was always curious about Gurren Lagann.
Anyhow, I finally downloaded and watched it. I watched the last six episodes back-to-back in one setting. Haven't done that with any other show. Ever.
Damn, Gurren Lagann is awesome.
I loved the way they wrapped up the first half of the story, the fight with Genome was one of the best moments of any anime I've seen. The other moment that sticks out in my mind is when they form Arc Gurren. I could nit pick about a few things but damn, I loved this show.
Hell, I might even buy the DVD's if they ever make it over here. Can't wait to see the movie(s).

New news, take as you will.
-
It's been a full two years since I got really angry, but that announcement did it. I ended up warp-digivolving into Malintex_Terror for a couple minutes there, and had to walk out of my computer lab to cool down. :getlost:
-
Sounds like good news to me.
Was it supposed to come out earlier or something?
-
News link #2, this one could cause some sparks.
News link #3, this one's more positive. (Though, I guess that depends on how you personally define 'positive'. o.o)
-
@Mr.:
Sounds like good news to me.
I might have bought something from ADV Films because it's a cheaper company, though I find their dubs weak. I'll never patronize Bandai unless they greenlight Ocean Group to do the dub - the thought of a washed-up Power Ranger and Broadway dropout doing anymore voices for a popular anime really beats me out of shape. :(

I hear ya, Terek. God, I hope it's not the ocean group. This news marks the second time today I've blurted out "What the fuck?", the other being when my uncle asked out of nowhere what name I'd choose if I were a birthday clown.
-
You misunderstand a bit. While I don't consider Ocean Group to be the BEST of the lot, I'd prefer them to a BangZoom!/Animaze dub that hires actors out of California. Because I mean, California has a ton of talen as we've seen in HB shows of the '90's and 80's and those used in current CN shows, but they're never hired, only the second rate local Southern California folks or those with connections to the vocal directors.
Ocean > California as far as I'm concerned. Ocean has horrible problems with pronouncing Japanese names, but that's not an issue in GL's dub because very few of GL's names are Japanese-like. To make matters worse, California dubs usually put the same actors in the same roles for EVERY GOSH DARN ANIME THAT EVER GOES THROUGH THEIR DOORS.
It's ridiculous. I would have been shamed into buying an ADV dub, since it would have been comparatively cheaper and I want to support Gainax in the hopes of Garlock, but I'm not giving a penny to Bandai.
They can kiss my arse.
-

Hmm, you wouldn't be refering to John Bosch(or whatever his name is) who does Ishigo Kurosaki's voice would you?
