After Burner. It pretty much faded into obscurity after it was released. What some people don't know is that G-LOC, Strike Fighter, and Sky Target are all part of the AB series. After Burner Climax is a pretty good game though from what I've seen. The PSP game (Black Falcon) is meh though. I'd like to see Climax on the Wii.
Video Game Franchises That Jumped the Shark
-
-
Mortal Kombat jumped the shark as soon as I became older than 12
-
Starblade also faded into obscurity too. There was going to be a sequel to it (Starblade Operation Blue Planet) but it never came out. Damn you Namco.
-
I can't even say Sega jumped the shark with Sonic because of the DS titles kicking so much ass. However, the gaming community jumped the shark on Shenmue and Jet Grind Radio and that upsets me.
-
Max Payne 2
Viewtiful Joe (after the 2nd game wit Red Hot Rumble and the PSP game)
Smackdown (vs.Raw 05,vs Raw 07,Raw08)
Jak II (the whole Jak is really from the future twist at the end) -
Megaman
Sonicthats my list everything else is good in my opinion
-
Xevious.
Right after 3D-G came out there was no new Xevious game. Also Solvalou (which was a Xevious/Starblade hybrid) has never been ported to a console so all we have is the half-assed MAME ROM that doesn't work on newer versions.
-
@Sandai:
Viewtiful Joe (after the 2nd game wit Red Hot Rumble and the PSP game)
The PSP game IS RHR. The other one you're thinking of is Double Trouble, which was actually pretty decent, and certainly didn't 'jump the shark'.
-
Sonic jumped the Shark with Sonic Adventure. I think it could have been saved had Sonic X-Treme been released, it looks like a fun game, and it seemed to do 3D Sonic successfully. At least, from what I've seen of it. Reminds me of Mario Galaxy though but it may just be the ability to run on certain walls and the fish-eye camera making the levels look like circular worlds ala Mario Galaxy. SA2 was good, but could have been better. Chaos Emerald bonus levels and actually killing Shadow would have been nice, although I blame the crew who made the later games for that blunder. And Sonic the Hedgehog 06 was a complete disaster, I played the XBL demo and it was unplayable. How they thought it was ready for release is beyond me.
I stopped playing Crash bandicoot after the party game, Crash Bash, and the last good one was the Crash Team Racing, both are spin-offs which are as decent to Crash as Mario Party is to Mario. But now they just milk it. The graphics were excellent on the PS1, but it seems now like they don't even bother with them anymore, and keep them just as good as they were before. No improvement=fail. I looked back and remembered the fun I used to have beating all 3 games, before, but seeing something as dumb as Crash and Cortex teaming up(lame plot idea that is cliche and over used. Need something to seem epic? The usual Portagonist and Antagonist need to team up to beat something or someone!) just for a reason to switch up the gameplay a bit.
Now, I'm no RPG buff, so my opinion isn't necessarily anything like your average FF obsessed fan who will not rest until they beat the game from start to finish with absolute perfection and gain every worthwhile item and play every class combination. But Final Fantasy just doesn't seem the same. The original fantasy world appealed to me(not that I've played it yet) but I bought FF12 hoping for something similar. What I got was guys riding chickens wearing metal armor that puts form about equal with function and use swords and arrows, but yet ride around on spaceships, and have robots and such. There's also aliens. I can understand lizardmen and such, but not friendly sentients. The original appeal really isn't there. Seems like going from Fantasy to a mixed Fantasy and Sci-Fi world kinda ruined it, IMO. I heard FF9 was pretty close to the original vision for FF, so I may give the series another shot with that. Don't know where it went wrong, but something changed. Also, I'm cool with airships. They're cool. Not too out of place, entirely.
-
Oh yeah Battle Carnival (Red hot Rumble) was the game I was thinking
about and I say this is where the series JTS seeing as how the series
just didn't look right being thrown into the fighting genre. And Sonic The Hegehog(new) was okay though it could've been a lot more polished

I assume you haven't seen Final Fantasy The Spirits Within.
-
Polished? It's like someone polished it with 20 grit sandpaper! I'm not even sure if they make sandpaper that rough! It's not playable. Maybe one day when it's on sale in a bargain bin for $10 while Gamestop is having a 50% off sale, I'll slap down 5 bucks for it. Maybe.
I also heard complaints about the story, and to be honest, the little snippets I've heard along with the addition of a new hedgehog is enough to make me want to steer clear of the story…which is the only point of a Sonic game any more, since it's basically SA2 with a different story. Or Branching Paths, if you go with Shadow's game. The one where they not only confirmed Shadow it back as himself, but have him a crappy origin and a gun. Yeah, that one.
-
There's no aliens in FF12.
-
As much as I hate to say it, Viewtiful Joe. With Red Hot Rumble.
-
@Pass:
As much as I hate to say it, Viewtiful Joe. With Red Hot Rumble.
…yeah. I think they should've just ended it with the second one.
-
@Komrade:
Generally when you put "jump the shark" when talking about video games it means a game style departure that is radical, or an endless stream of sequels and remakes.
In that case, I'll name a couple:
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (NES) deviates a lot from the other two games on the system since it was a side-scrolling quasi-rpg.
Megaman Soccer (SNES) almost completely deviates from all the original series gameplay. Seriously, Megaman playing Soccer? What was Capcom thinking?!?!
-
-
No, the freaky lizard guy and all the other strange races. I've played fantasy games before. I'm familiar with things like lizard men and humanoids, but come on, various humanoid raced flying spacecraft but fighting with swords? Something seems off here. It just doesn't mix.
-
Most of them were from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Unless I'm mistaken, the only new race were the Seeqs.
And "spacecraft?" Come on, pretty much every Final Fantasy game features airships.
-
hahahahaha airships are u.f.o.'s now
OH JEEZE THE INVINCIBLE IS HERE TO PROBE US, DAMN YOU STEINER
-
Yeah, there's no "spacecraft" in any FF game except for 4, 7, and 8. Definitely none in 12.
-
The Invincible from IX was a spaceship too.
-
Yeah, I just remembered that shortly after typing the post. Forgot that Zidane and his bitches were made on another planet.
Ohhhhhh weeeeeeeeell, the point still stands.
-
Well they didn't really travel through space. They just warped directly from one planet to the other.
-
@Tommy:
…yeah. I think they should've just ended it with the second one.
I don't know, I think it still had some juice left in it. It just got ruined when they tried to bring VJ to the DS.
I'm still opting for a wii game to bring it back to code.
-
@Tommy:
…yeah. I think they should've just ended it with the second one.
Technically they did end it at the second game seeing as how they didn't make a Viewtiful Joe 3 despite the ending to the 2nd game setting up for a third.
-
@Geg:

Well, there was a spacecraft in FF7. There was the Highwind, if airships count as spacecrafts, and then there was Cid's Rocket Ship.
-
Did you quit reading his post halfway through
-
Well, there was a spacecraft in FF7. There was the Highwind, if airships count as spacecrafts, and then there was Cid's Rocket Ship.
Its funny that you called the airship a spacecraft and the spacecraft and airship
-
Wow looks like we have another debate going on, still never got my earlier question about viewing Sprits Within answered though.
-
I thought Shadow the Hedgehog was the jumping point for Sonic. "lol, sonic with guns!"
So what next. You gonna say Zelda jumped the shark because of Wind Waker?
Geez it was just one game. Other Sonic games since then have been pretty good.
-
i would say pokeyman but apparently the last two were good
-

Sonic the Hedgehog 360
-

-
What they said. Sonic Riders was mediocre (though I'm interested in the sequel) and the 360 game just plain failed. Plus I liked Wind Waker.
If it was just one game I wouldn't be saying that. If I thought like that, then I'd hate pretty much every series I like. For example, I thought Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time was very disappointing, but I loved other Mario games that came out after it.
Oh, and I don't count the recent 2-D Sonic games. Those were great.
-

The lifespan of Sonic the Hedgehog games.
Edit: Yes, its a bit dated but some of these games shouldn't have existed at all.
-
Everyone's also missing that he's calling Wind Waker a bad game.
-
Yeah that's what I was about to point out. He compared Shadow the hedgehog to The Wind Waker.
What a fucking disgrace.
-
I loved Wind Waker when I knew what I was doing (my first time playing it, I didn't have a guide). I hate it that everyone hated it, it was just as good as any other Zelda (IMO).
I found Shadow….meh. I personally thought it was playable, thought it was alright. Not great. I'm just not that hard to please.
ANd I haven't even played Riders, cuz I don't want to. It looks like it sucks.
-

Aren't there some missing ?

People are usually going to find one game or more games in a particular franchise that they aren't going to like
Mario - Super Mario Bros 2,Super Mario Sunshine
Sonic The Hedgehog - SA,SA2
Doom - Doom 3
Halo - Halo 2
KOTOR - KOTOR II
Zelda - Wind Waker
MGS - Metal Gear Solid 2
Megaman - Battle Network (all)
Shenmue - (both games)So if you don't like that kind of criticism you're really not going to have no other choice but to accept it.
- Looks both ways -
Wind Waker
-
It's like a 13 second sound clip
Obviously they won't be able to cram in and sync up every crappy Sonic game
-
Didn't know it was sound clip which raises the question why make a sound clip? as opposed to just making a video clip.
-
….............wow.
-
it's really nothing awe-spiring or sarcasm worthy about my comment I figure if you're going to make a video clip of Sonic games you should include every Sonic game since Sonic 1 to whatever was the most recent Sonic game to be released instead of making something that's not worth turning up your speaker for.
-
I think seeing Shadow and Shuffle hits the point home without showing 10+ Game Gear games.
-
NO SONIC LABYRINTH?!
This thing is not worth laying eyes upon
-

Its a goddamn image/GIF with a looping sound file.

If you were an lawyer you'd be laughed out of the courtroom, even worse if you were a prosectuor.

The Picard face palm thing was funny once, now people are starting to spam the hell out of it also if you're gonna use that try giving giving a reason for using it as opposed to quoting what I said and posting a collage or mural of people doing faceplams with Picard in the background
I don't think he realizes what ytmnd is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ytmnd
Thank you for the HU, still don't understand why they only included a fraction of the Sonic games though, let alone the signifigance of the slideshow is it supposed to help people understand how badly the Sonic games have fallen off since the first or something?
NO SONIC LABYRINTH?!
If you're gonna attack Labyrith go after all Sonic games on the game gear
seeing or playing those game really makes me understand why Nintendo
chased them out of the handhled market. If you were an lawyer you'd be laughed out of the courtroom, even worse if you were a prosectuor.
Look at the first comment I made when I quoted Janken that little quote I made in the T&T doesn't really apply here the fact still remains there doesn't
seem to be any significance of making a 13 second gif image or sound clip of a fraction of games in a series such as Sonic that would be the equivalent of making a 13 second clip of Mario games sped-up in 13 seconds
wouldn't look as cool as making :50 long clip (rough estimate) featuring of all the Mario or Mario related games games made since 1983.
