Money maps are user made maps with lots of lots of resources. It's basicly dumbed down map design. Every RTS games has those, and those tend to be very popular among players. For example Starcraft has a map called "$$$$Fastest Possible Map Ever$$$$".
At Battle.net forums a community leader Karune is doing these Q&A things. Lots of info for those who are interested.
First batch:
! What is this: http://temporal.pr0.pl/varia/SC2/ss1-hires.jpg - http://temporal.pr0.pl/varia/SC2/addon2.png ? It appears to be a drop ship of some type maybe, can we comment on this unit?
The unit seen is a building add-on, and well be revealing more on the Terran building upgrades in the future.
! What type of scripting language is being used? Aspiring map/mod makers would like to know.
! StarCraft IIs editor features a proprietary scripting language that is based largely on C with some special parameters specific to the game. Of course, for most users, they will have access to the more user friendly Trigger Editor which will allow beginner and intermediate map designers to make advanced maps without having to learn the particular details of the scripting language. Well release further information about the world editor as we move forward.
! Players have pointed out that the nuke laser dot graphic showing their destination is quite a bit larger and more noticeable than the original games. Is this a finished graphic and are we intending to make incoming nukes easier to spot now?
! In the announcement gameplay video the incoming nuke marker was shown as if launched by the player. To other players it will still be shown as a smaller dot very similar to the classic StarCraft nuke.
! The mothership time distortion doesn't seem to stop all incoming projectiles or fire, what exactly does it protect against?
The Mothership time-slowing ability is intended to deal with all types of incoming attacks, although only incoming missiles were shown prominently in the announcement gameplay video.
! Re: Game Balance
The announcement gameplay video used more than a few tricks to show off each unit. The Mothership for instance was set to be indestructible for a good portion of the time it was on screen, as well as having additional energy so that we could display all of its special abilities in a shorter amount of time than would normally be possible. In addition to the multiple changes made just for the video, the gameplay in the video is not indicative at this time of what the final balance will be. The announcement gameplay video was showing off the game and units in the coolest way possible, and not necessarily in a way that would resemble an actual match.
! Re: Game Speed
! As some of you may have seen in the developer panel held at the Worldwide Invitational after the announcement of StarCraft II, it was revealed that the gameplay in the announcement video was shown at Normal speed so that we could really showcase it and let everyone see the detail and work put into the game. There will still be the faster game speed settings many players are used to from the original game.
Second batch:
! 1) Will players be able to select multiple buildings simultaneously?
! We are directing much attention to polishing and improving the user interface. On that note, players will definitely be able to select and build from multiple buildings at the same time. You cannot drag-select buildings, but you can shift-click on them and add them to a control-group for ease of unit production.
! 2) Will workers auto-gather resources if the rally point is set to a mineral node or a geyser?
! Of course.
! Currently, unit selection is unlimited, but this may change with further development and testing.
Third batch:
! 1)What is the role of heroes in StarCraft II? Will they be the same as in StarCraft?
! StarCraft II campaign heroes will fulfill roles similar to what appeared in the original StarCraft single player experience, but they will have even more unique abilities from standard units, and will be more innovatively integrated into the story campaign. Heroes will not be buildable in multiplayer.
! 2)What is the max unit count population for each faction?
! Unit population count for each faction will be very similar to the original StarCraft.
3)Will there be an in-game option to change hotkeys around?
Currently it is planned to have this feature, though much testing has yet to be done on it. We are looking into several innovative ways to make the UI customizable to players, to allow flexibility in their style of game play.
! 4)Is Karunes Battle.net Forum Avatar a Protoss High Templar?
Yes it is.
! 5)Will the Robotics Facility have a similar upgrade to the Warp Gate allowing it to warp units in?
! There are no plans for this at the moment. Currently Warping technology is limited to the Warp Gate. Of course, we are still testing and balancing this, and nothing is set in stone.
Fourth batch:
! 1)Are the yellow minerals shown in the trailers harvestable?
Yes, they will be a harvestable high yield resource, meaning each harvest rotation will result in greater mineral quantities than the standard blue minerals. This gives players more strategic choices when trying to evaIuate where they wish to expand. Expand to the high yield but risk easier discovery? Or expand to a safer area but earn fewer resources?
! 2)Will resource sharing be allowed between allies?
! Yes, it is our plan to have this in the game, though there is still much testing and balancing revolving around this ability.
! 3)Will allied chat be enabled by default for pre-set teams?
Yes.
! 4)Is the Zealot charge ability an upgrade as well?
! Yes, this ability is upgraded through the Protoss War Shrine.
! 5)What types of future community updates will there be?
Starcraft2.com will be updated with regular unit and building profiles. Furthermore, there are several projects in the works planned for the Blizzards RTS Community as a whole, which we will share at a later time.
http://www.battle.net/forums/board.aspx?ForumName=sc-general
Fifth batch:
! 1) Will you be increasing the max players beyond 8?
! We are exploring this possibility, though currently it is defaulted to 8 max players.
! 2) If you have multiple casters selected when you cast a spell, will they all cast it or only one? (ex. will 8 ghosts all use lockdown on a unit or only one?)
! Currently, unit abilities are set as smart casting, meaning when you have a group of casters selected, each time you wish to cast a spell, you will either have to click the icon or press the hot key and follow it with a click on the designated place on the map for it to cast. This will obviously prevent locking down a single unit with more than one ghost, though we are also still exploring possibilities to have different methods of casting for casters in which players would want to have multiple casts executed in a single command.
! 3) Will building placement still be grid based?
! Building placement will be grid based.
! 4) What races will be playable at BlizzCon?
! This will be revealed at BlizzCon! See ya there!
! 5) Why do marines have shields now?
! The shields seen on marines in screenshots and videos are an upgrade that can be purchased through research, increasing the marines' overall hit points.
I have been playing campaings of the original game. I'll try multiplayer once I got hot keys figured out again - the computer is pretty easy to beat, though. The game is still everything you could wish from a RTS, meaning it's top notch, and there absolutely nothing wrong with it. Expect it's pretty darn old school. The interface and unit AI are so ancient that it could make a lesser man to cry. SC II will be less hardcore and it will have all the modern comforts so that's one more reason to look up for it.
By the way: Protoss > Zerg & Terran.
Well, if anyone wants to play me in brood war, I'm in the U.S. East region named "Cr4zy". Look me up. Doesn't have to be a normal match, play some cannon D or something.
I'm replaying the campaigns too.
I'm on the last level of the original game….boy howdy....will I ever beat this monster level?
Shit, is everyone replaying? lmao, I bought Brood War and doing the Zerg campaign right now, hahah!
Iv'e never been very good at the game (I'm dead awful at multiplayer matches) but Iv'e gotten way better since last (5 years ago) I played.
But back than I couldn't imagine getting past the mid-Terran campaign.
Now I'm at the last friggin non-BW level.
But the most amazing thing is how awesome it is all these years later.
Its so much better than Warcraft2 its sad, and its even better than Warcraft3.
Shit, is everyone replaying? lmao, I bought Brood War and doing the Zerg campaign right now, hahah!
Since the announcement of SC II, Starcraft has appeared back into pretty much every top-10-most-selling-games-right-now lists there is. Or that's how it was a few weeks ago. I'm not sure how it's doing as of now, it was probably just a huge momentary peak in sales, but it's pretty good accomplishment none the less –- that's what you get when you keep supporting your game and not abandon it after couple patches like most companies do. :getlost:
I rebought the battlechest myself.
Isn't the Battlechest like 10 dollars at Gamestop/EB Games?
Yesh, I beat the original campaigns. Now, Brood War campaigns, here I come.
K, I officially suck at multiplayer :(
But then again, they nerf'd the Zerg so much over time… I might start learning the Protoss again.
Beat the original, that last level wasn't so bad.
As long as you have 12 fully upgraded BCs and 12 fully upgraded Carriers your good.
Its surviving to that point thats tough.
Oh man, I forgot how awesome the Brood War intro movie is. Still thier best cinematic.
I'm on ProtossX level 4 now, fuck you Kerrigan, your not fooling anyone.
Man, last time I played I didn't get (or even know about) the bonus level in the Zerg Brood War campaign.
! I really hope the hybrid units makes an appearance in SC2

You haven't played much multiplayer, have you.
In most of the campaing missions you can just sit in your base, tech up without a worry and finally attack with huge huge masses. It's pretty much an opposite of multiplayer.
And speaking of it, I made a multiplayer account. The name is "YoskaR" and I will probably play in the European realm. (But, hey, I could try U.S. East too!)
You didn't read my post carefully did you.
No, even if you survive to that point, you can get brutally raped. That's all I mean.
cr4zy what does him playing single player have to do with how much multiplayer he has played?
he was only talking about campaign battles.
No, even if you survive to that point, you can get brutally raped. That's all I mean.
With 12 battlecruisers and 12 Carriers fully upgraded the Overmind and all 5 zerg bases around him were raped, hard.
I lost only 4 carriers, and only to Scourge.
You'd have to really suck at unit management, have sent Raynor, Zeratul, or Tassadar into danger, or left your bases completely undefended from massive attacks to lose once at that point.
I hope you really don't think I'm so nieve to think that will work in multiplayer games and just misread.
Five Carriers were way more than enough for me. I just used Hallucination to each of them and then I flew to Overmind. I should had used Defensive Matrix too as I had a chance to, just for kicks, but oh well.
I honestly think the toughest levels in the original were…
Terran 10:Hammerfall (motherfucking tanks, motherfucking nukes)
Zerg 3:The New Dominion (we give you shit for unit options)
Zerg 8:Eye for an Eye (leave the southern beacon alone!!!)
Zerg 10:Full Circle (shit for gas)
Protoss 7:Homeland (unless you use the cheap secret route heh)
Protoss 9:Shadow Hunters (a true battle of attrition)
So far Brood War isn't so tough, of course Im only on ProtossX 5, its nice to see the UED.
I thought the last level on the Protoss Brood War campaign was hard. Carriers was kinda useless for me. Corsairs and reavers worked pretty nicely.
And sorry for misreading your earlier post zeph.
I honestly think the toughest levels in the original were…
The names of the missions has escaped me but the inside mission with Protoss which had Infested Terrans was kinda annoying. The Zerg mission with a beacon in the middle, the one which made you to wait there for "10 minutes" with a Drone. I guess It would have been easier if had just used Defilers –- Reavers were so annoying. And the Terran mission where you had to destroy this huge cannon. The one with nukes. I got Raynor killed so I had to start it all over again.
Perhaps Brood War feels easier because you are getting better?
Those are..
Protoss 6
Zerg 9
and Terran 10.
The drone in the beacon bit confused me, I got him there but as soon as he reached the beacon he vanishes, so I didn't bother holding that position at all, I just made a huge defense wall in the pass with about ten guardians hanging out at it to protect my base.
Than when the timer finished my drone popped back out and I flew him back home.
As for Brood war, I just reached ProtossX 6 and officially feel intimidated.
E3 was a bummer. No new info whatsoever. Expect just few new screenshots. But then again Blizzcon is just around a corner.
I'm in a bit hurry but here are few new units:
http://imajr.com/StofferGubbar_1_191337
http://imajr.com/StofferGubbar_2_191338
http://imajr.com/StofferGubbar_3_191339
People are flipping out because of the new Terran units. They can't get over with the fact that this is Starcraft 2, not Starcraft 3D.

ZOMG! THE TERRAN GHOST LOOKS LIKE A GHOSTBUSTER! FTW!!!!!
But I fail to understand why Marines would have shields, and not just have some reinforced armor.
The shield is attached to the Marine's shoulder so it's basicly reinforced armor. Actually I think it makes a lot of sense as in the past Marines had to combat a lot against their Zerg and Protoss counter parts, Zerglings and Zealots, which are fearsome close quarter units and so Terran had to adapt to it. What doesn't make that much of sense is why it would give more HP instead like, I don't know, defence bonus against Zerglings and suchs? But I guess the point of it is to give Marines a better chance to live during late game.
By the way, wanna play against me Gr4zy?
Edit: Batch 6:
! 1) Are Photon and Phase Cannons 2 different buildings?
! The Phase Cannon is the new version of the StarCraft Photon Cannon. There will not be a Photon Cannon in StarCraft II.
! 2) Will carriers (Tempest) produce more than one drone type?
! Not at this time.
! 3) Fans noticed in your art video that thye Colossus ground unit was under fire from missile turrets. Is this due to the Colossus's exceptionally high attack profile (tall stature) or a ground-to-ground attack feature/option for the turrets?
! Because of the Colossus's height, it will be susceptible to Anti Air defenses like the Terran Missile Turrets, as well as both ground and air attacks. It is possible for the Colossus to be hit by ground and air attacks at the same time.
! 4) Will there be critters units and can they attack?
! There will be critters, but they wont attack. If they did they would be creeps.
! 5) Will holding the Alt button show unit/building hit points overhead as they did in Warcraft 3?
! Yes, when holding the Alt button, all health bars of buildings and units on the screen will be displayed. This is an excellent way to quickly assess which units are healthy and which units are damaged.
Yet more units:
!
! So far we know Terran's has SVCs, Marines, Reapers, Medics, Ghosts, Cobras, Siege Tanks, Banshees, Viking Fighters and Thors. And there are no more Soul Hunters for Protoss as Blizzard kicked them out.
More I read about this game, the more I want to play it now. Who cares about Brawl, Halo and Metal Gear…
I finally beat Brood War too.
By the way, wanna play against me Gr4zy
Not too used to a 1v1 match, but sure. Anyone else wanna join in? FFA or 2v2 or 3v3, or w/e.
What time you are on? Like in Greenwich Mean Time?
I'm more a 1v1 player myself. 2v2 games are okey and all but FFA just gives me a headache. Anyway, I haven't really played this game online yet - just two quick test games with my bro - but don't be easy on me. I like challenge so I also like it the best when my opponents are trying their hardest against me even it means that I get totally owned.
Would you be okey with Lost Temple as the map? My prefered race would be Protoss.
You ever play fastest map? It just quickens the game because mineral and gas gathering is a lot faster. Yeah, my preferred base is also toss. I'll do Lost Temple as well, I don't mind. BTW, I do U.S. East in EST time.
Nah, I stay away from money maps. Anyway, I just PM you.
Halfway through UED campaign, I fucked Mengsk up the ass and I'm on Aiur now.
Oh Stukov, we shall soon part.
It sucks that we had lag problems, Gr4zy. It's weird. Perhaps we just live too far apart from each others. It wouldn't be the first time.
The Terran campaign in BW had two missions which were annoying. The last one and the one were you show who's the daddy to Mengsk –- I should had choosed to wipe out Nukes instead of Battle Cruisers.
Ha, I just beat two computers. At first I thought I couldn't do it. Now I shall try how well I fare against three computers.
I'm sorry, but is there a reason why you're calling me Gr4zy?
And yes it was a shame we couldn't really play together. Maybe they can fix something like this in the next Battle.net in SC2.
Whops! My bad, I clearly need to buy eyeglasses.
Stukov is dead…
Heres hoping Duran gets his in Starcraft 2.
You'd rather fight nukes though?
I fought Mengsk's BCs.
Ghosts are really annoying to me.

Beware
! Duran kills himself at the end of the Zerg campaign.
Your thinking of Duhgalle.
Duran, the black guy with the beret who is or isnt a zerg.
A super secret spoiler about Duran:
! He isn't a Zerg but serving "a far greater power".
We will definitely see him again.
Your thinking of Duhgalle.
Duran, the black guy with the beret who is or isnt a zerg.
Well that's a slap to the face.
I don't know why it took me so long to notice this but one of the Terran's buildings appears to be a (strip) bar: www.gamechosun.co.kr/site/data/img_dir/2007/07/20/2007072000001121.gif
So.. would we still have Archons and Dark Archons, or are they Twilight archons now? :\
OH, after a 1-11 losing streak (even the one win was joint effort), I finally had a decent online battle. If only my 2nd base camp survived…
There will be Twilight Archons only. It's sort a mix of the two. I suppose it will be like an Archon but with Feedback - that would make Twilight Archon a hard counter to all caster units. But, god, Battle.net forums are nuts. Now folks there are complaining how Twilight Archons don't look exactly like Archons in SC. I suppose they haven't noticed the word Twilight. I so hope that Blizzard doesn't bent over to all of these silly complains.
What do they want exactly?
Oh and also, last UED level = Piece of cake
"CHANGE ARCHON!: no/hardly visible legs, hovering, no shadow, Less to no armour, shooting using two hands, orbiting electrons."
In a nutshell, it shoudn't look any different from SC's Archon. But Twilight Archon is a new unit - it's basicly an evolution of Archon - so it should look different. Besides the original Archon actually has legs too, or those are two very long extensions of manhood. It just doesn't walk with them.
I don't care what the model is, as long as it dies with a EMP shockwave :P
Note to self: Don't build marines. GRRRRR
