They've said that they're trying to keep as close to the Viz manga release as possible, and their version (correctly) uses "fishman," so I'd assume the DVDs would use that.
Problem is a lot of the time the Viz manga is wrong.

^When is the Viz manga wrong? Except for slight move name changes, it's pretty damn accurate.
Well Mike Micfarland is coming to ACEN. He's working with the show right? Do you guys want me to try to ask him any questions that haven't been answered here/at Anime boston?
I was just gonna offer to do the same. Acen is about a week and a half from today. I doubt they'll have any new info but I'll ask if there's a question that hasn't been answered yet.
Just ask a rep if the dumb little "Shonen Jump's" thing is going to be in the logo.
It proboally will. Their Black Cat dvd's have 'em. Although not their Dragonball stuff.
I think it's something they now have to do with the new Shonen Jump stuff. Viz has done it with Naruto and Bleach.
It's also on the Bobobo and Beet DVDs too, and Illumitoon releasing those.
I wouldn't be surprised if that Shonen Jump label stays.
They list Luffy, Zolo, and Nami as "Major Villain Characters" in the first section of their episode guide. Special.
You mustn't forget Shanks.
I guess they are keeping Smoker's name "Chaser".
It's already confirmed they're using Ace and Smoker and NOT Trace and Chaser, that's like saying "Well uhh, Funi CAN'T be doign Skypeia because the characters aren't on the page yet."
I think Toei's still "confused" because of all the name changes going on. Once the episodes come out I'm sure the site will be updated.
Yeah, Toei is looking pretty oblivious on the American side of things.

And yet they're making lists for FUNi to followโฆ

Toei seems to be a little confused, about alot of things.
In the original interview from when news of the Funi dub broke, it was mentioned that Toei wants a degree of consistency with the video games and manga.
According to stuff from the dreaded list that Mato was told us about, the video game they seem to be in keeping with is Pirate's Carnival. And yet despite the 4Kids name changes (alterations rather) we're getting Ace and Smoker changed. So we're already seeing consistency issues with that.
Maybe someone should tell Toei that Viz (at least judging by their mostly faithful translation so far) probably won't be using these 4Kids name changes when they reach Jaya/Skypiea. Aside from Zolo Coco Village and Nefeltari, they haven't gone with the 4Kids names.
Afterall, once the new dub gets started, the ONLY other One Piece product to be consistent with will be the manga (at least until Bandai gets more games out, but at that point they'll just use whatever names Funi is using) So if they use the 4Kids Pirate's Carnival names now, they'll end up NOT being consistent when Viz reaches that point.
So instead of keeping things consistent, we'll just end up with more consistency issues.

I think so to. I mean, the English Toei site was erected at the point where the impression could've easily been that 4kids still had the license. But the latest word is that they want to be consistent with the manga.
But either way, I don't think we have to worry about names from the past 143 episodes.
I know they aren't to Ms. Doublefinger or anything yet. But did the Viz manga have it as Miss AllSunday & Miss Goldenweek? Or did they use the 4kids Miss Sunday and Miss April Fools Day?
No they are the originals.
Viz used Ms. AllSunday, and Ms.GoldenWeek.
Edit- Dang too slow. Oh well. At least this most likely means they will keep Ms.Merrychristmas and Ms.Doublefinger.
Phew, that's a relief. Let's hope Toei let's FUNi go with those when they re-dub.
But you know? Watch Viz use the correct names for Jaya and stuff by the time they get there. Yet the dub will have used the 4kids names.
Yeah, all those things got major fixes.
Though I gotta stop looking at old stuff in the list, it's gonna give me ulcers I hope we can change even more when we go back.
Well, it'll probably be a few years before FUNi goes back to the beginning. So maybe Toei and their big bad list will have lifted up some by then.
But I think that really depends on how well the FUNi dub works out. Which I'm holding high hopes for.
Mato also mentioned that she was listed as "Ms. MerryChristmas" in his giant list of death, so I'm assuming Baroque Works is back to normal.

That's what I'm saying, if Toei knew that their list will cause consistency issues down the line they might be more willing to remove their restrictions.
It might be that Viz doesn't have a say either, they might have another company telling them what to do too. I'm almost certain that's the case. What a crazy mess
Then that company is really dumb because the inconsistency in some things is mind-fricking-blowing. How many names will Den-Den-Mushi fricking have Viz?

in the 4kids thread, it states that the Zoro/Zolo thing "unfortunately" has to stay because of "legal" reasons, which is why they had to change "Detective Conan" to "Case Closed", which really opens up a whole new thread of questions: Who owns the copyright to the name "Zoro" as spelled? Or is it just Toei's big bad list? Or Sueshia's frickin' stupidity to copyright "Zolo" instead of "Zoro"?A little bit of both. He mentioned that Paramount owns the license to "Zorro" from the live action movie and what-not, and they also owned anything with the name "Conan" apparantly, hence Case Closed. At the same time, Toei has "Zolo" on the list of death due to marketing reasons.

But the problem I'm seeing is that Viz chose to use "Zoro" for the first 50 or so chapters of their One Piece manga, until 4kids decided to come along and screw fans over by calling him "Zolo", then, when Sueshia saw that, they copyrighted that name, forcing Viz to use the name. Sucks, really. Some one should invent a time machine to go back and THROW AL KAHN IN THE DUNGEON BEFORE HE GETS A CHANCE TO MAKE 4KIDS!!!
But there is no consistency issues with the manga, since Viz discontinued the books with "Zoro" in them and replaced them so all new prints say "Zolo".
Heso!
The Zoro/Zolo issue is really silly. Anyway no matter what I am sure that with the new VAs the Zolo will sound fine. I wish that it was Zoro too but I am sure that Funimation will do thier best to make it work better like I am sure that they will handle Sanji's lollipop issue better which is just as silly. At least on the DVDs where it really counts Sanji will get to smoke.
It would be great if we could have a time machine to go back and make sure that 4Kid never got One Piece. However I believe that Funimation will give it their best to turn One Piece into a phoenix and from the ashes will be something that is true to the story and characters.

They COULD pull a Viz and pronounce it like it would be said in Japanese, with the kind of faux stutter, and SAY it's Zolo, but pretty much leaving it up to the fans to decide how it's pronounced. That would make me feel a LOT better about the new dub.

Like on Inuyasha right? They say Kilala but spell it Kirara.

Reminds me a lot of the volg/vorg situation in hajime no ippo's dub. It sounds like they are saying vorg, but they spell it volg.
I think I mentioned it a while back, but they also do it with "Kirara" in Inuyasha. They don't say "Kee RAH RAH" but they curl their tounges in a way that makes it sound like "Kee LAH LAH".
EDIT: Doh! someone beat me to it!
Mato, I'm curious but who are your translation nakama you mentioned?
I know originally that Simmons was the only translator, then you got hired once Funi's workload was too much for just one person. How many other translators work with you guys?
Yeah, it was just us two for many years, but like last year after FUNi was acquired by Navarre we suddenly had twice as many shows so they hired some other people. I'm not sure of how many total/who exactly they all are. Some have worked for other companies in the past though.
But if you were asking for specific names, I don't think I can give that info out either
Ah ok. Maybe I'll check ANN's database for a list of translators later if they have them.
P.S.- Off topic but, you're very lucky to make a living doing something you love. Ideally I hope I can settle into something I really like, but if not I'll still be satisfied. Another question- how long did it take you to master the Japanese language enough to where you can read/speak casually like native speakers? Is it necessary to live in Japan for a while for complete mastery and if so, how much time is needed?
Oh yeah, forgot about ANN. People don't often add FUNi's translators (or at least usually not in my case) but that'd be a good way to check stuff. I never thought of that.
Hmm, well I don't think one can really ever "master" a language, I mean I'm still looking up new English words all the time Studying in school is good, but that'll only help you so much, plus unfortunately (like almost all college classes) other people will only do the very bare minimum to pass, so mostly you have to learn all the extra stuff on your own. By that I mean that most people in my graduating class probably only knew 100-300 kanji well, and that's what a first or second grader in Japan would know.
Anyway, after maybe 3 years of intense college courses I could start to enjoy games and the like but not really "get" stuff. But then after a year in Japan of super intense study everything came much more natural.
All summed up, I'd say a few early courses in school and then actually living in Japan is the quickest way. I bet it could be done in a year or two or three if one tried hard enough!
EDIT: Also, being able to do what I like for work is very awesome and rewarding. So I hope you can make it happen too. I'd personally hate to be stuck at a sucky job the rest of my life, it'd feel like prison to me :(
if this has been answered already or no answer yet.i apologize
Since Funi will be dubbing Skypia will the item Dials stay as dials or another term like shell(Jet shell,Breath shell,Record shell)
Also I believe the snakes name was Nola(someone check the Skypian Mangaa vol for Confirm, please).will the name also stay the same evwen thought some characters have name changes?
They're still dials. The list doesn't have the snake's name (:cheerful:) so it won't be changed.
I have some more questions: How many episodes have you (ruffly) subbed or what episode are you currently subbing? Also are any of those names changes I've asked about (e.g. Elbaph over Elbaf) been changed or kept?
Thank you in advance if you answer these questions, Mato. Your Avatar is awesome by the way
I can't say how far along we are, plus it's not always in sequential order anyway. (If someone could add this to the FAQ that'd help a lot, I get this one asked the most of all probably)
It looks like Elbaph is what's listed. Though it's gonna be a long time until that comes up anyway probably
Elbaph, eh? Weird, but it still sounds exactly the same, so whatevs.
I'll go ahead and add that question to the list.
Elbaph is still the Phat Phable, Toei really is out of touch with the fansโฆ

Sounds more like they're out of touch with English in general. Really, are they just posting random name translations on a wall and throwing a dart while blindfolded or something?
Was the name 'Elbaph' ever romanized by the original author though?
Elbaph is what's used in the Viz manga.
Well there you go. They said they were trying to be faithful to the Viz Manga, so no more bitching about Elbaf allowed :P
Mato, what's your favorite anime? I feel like asking a question that doesn't relate to One Piece.
Unless the answer is One Piece XD
@Gerchak:

Not like it's a big deal anyway. It's still pronounced the same way, so it's about as insignificant as "Wyper", really.

I don't think it's a big deal either, but Elbaf is fable backwards, so you kind of lose that play-on-words when you spell it differently, even it's the same word.

Yeah, not a huge deal, but it's still a misspelling that doesn't have to happen.
