For the record, i dun like either voice for Adult Goku but Kid Goku's Japanese seiyuu is perfect. He sounds both cute and naive which made him alot more likable. They tried to make him sound like a pint sized, idiot and thug in english I guess to match the more "macho" take on db in the west.
Oh yeah, will we be hearing Devil Fruit or Cursed Fruit?

I believe Mato said "deviled fruit".
Like "deviled egg".

Do you ever make sence? :wassat:
Firecrouch, it's gonna be Devil Fruit. That's what's on the list.
Yay! That's fine with me! :)

thanks for the the clarification, it's just that Toei Animation just sent out a press release today on ANN talking about how FUNimation will be making an uncut version of the show based more around the Japanese version, and in the "One Piece" synopsis they use Cursed Fruit instead of Devil Fruit. It kind of threw me off-guard, but then again these are the same people that spelled Sanji as Sandji.
all I just hope it wont be Sandji in the new dub
I wouldn't worry about "Sandji", that was a name used on the Toei Animation English site, and it was probably just a typo. Even if it stayed it doesn't make that much difference in pronunciation.
Heso!
I looked on the English Toei site. Sanji is now spelled right for his character bio. However it is still wrong in a few other parts. Oh well!
Oh, yeah… Talking about that... "Heso"... Mato, what did you translate "heso" into? If you don't recall, it's the greeting the Skypeians usually say.
It's still heso
Awesome. Do you guys explain that it means bellybutton, though?
It's still heso
I'm not sure if you are allowed to say, but…
1. What episode is your team currently working on/how big of a chunk of Sky Piea has completed?
2. Are you impressed with the results?
3. How are things looking for doing earlier episodes? (any new info?)
Awesome. Do you guys explain that it means bellybutton, though?
Sort of. Sadly, it's not common practice to add fansub-like notes to professional subtitle tracks, but from Usopp's line it should still be pretty clear to viewers that heso = belly button. I didn't do that ep but it's handled how I probably would've done it.

First, I should say that I lurk all over the interweb and I keep seeing you misquote me about stuff  Please try to be more careful in the future
Anyway:
1. Can't say, like I said before. Plus because of the "companies don't always make logical sense" law of the universe, it's not uncommon to do eps out of order. I don't want to say too much for fear of being misquoted/misunderstood, but we translators have done quite a lot so far.
2. ? Are you talking about the dub now? Because when I hear the dub will be when you guys hear the dub If you mean the subs, we don't get to preview our subs either, which is one thing I really miss from when I'm fansubbing stuff in my spare time.
3. No info's been given to me. I get the feeling I'll find out when everyone else does, like how it was with the initial announcement a few weeks ago.
Who else subs the episodes with you mato? Steve?

Yeah, that's Lobster for ya. He misquotes… well, everything. ^_^;

Ya damned right he does!
Mato, I know you may not have much control over what the content of the DVDs are, but I still have a suggestion you could give to the high peoples. Hows about you include a brief documentary about One Piece's history in America, including the 4Kids issue.

That's a good idea.

I'm always always worried about speaking for other people/saying stuff about the inner workings of the company that I shouldn't say, so I'm gonna have to pass on this question, sorry

I can try to suggest it, but could you go into more specifics of what it might cover? I get the feeling a documentary like that might be better after FUNi has a LOT of the series under its belt, but I'd be interested to know what ideas you might have in mind.
Hey Mato, I don't know if anyone asked you this already and sorry if they did but are you personally working on any other series currently? Or just the big OP?
Hey Mato, I don't know if anyone asked you this already and sorry if they did but are you personally working on any other series currently? Or just the big OP?
OP is the big focus right now, never focused on a single show like this before, so I can tell you FUNi is really serious about this I think other writers and stuff at that panel even expressed the same sentiments. I personally am working on other stuff but it's usually only after I've finished a batch of OP or if I feel up to working even more on weekends. I'm glad we got OP this year and not last year, last year I must've worked on 10+ things
BTW, I think someone mentioned it here or maybe another board, but when a translator has multiple shows (it's almost uncommon NOT to have multiple shows) he/she doesn't do switch between shows scene-by-scene, it's usually more like volume by volume. Switching between shows after each scene would be pure crazy
Hahaha, I hear ya' man. Neat. I figured as much but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I was thinking about something going into detail about how One Piece got where it is today strting off with it's conception. Maybe including interviews with the dub voice actors. I've found a little timelne on teh interwebs.

…. FUNi isn't working on the game at all yet.
I believe I mentioned that in the other thread.
I believe Namco Bandai does the US anime games

They still gotta get translations and the voice cast from FUNi. I believe it was said FUNi isn't working on any games.
I believe I have read "I believe" a lot in the last 4 posts.
Anyway, ah I see Mato. Well whatever it's cool. Has it been answered on how long it usually takes to translate an episode Mato? If not, then well
"How long does it take you to translate an episode?"
I'm gonna guess it depends how much is in the episode and how much is familiar.
I believe I have read "I believe" a lot in the last 4 posts.
…Believe it. >_>
...
Sorry, I just had to. ^_^; Anyways, man... I'm still wondering whether or not they go with a female actor for luffy, or try to go with a male one...

Of OP or just stuff in general? It can vary greatly depending on the type of episode and show, simple fights are easier than non-stop talking about vague/complicated stuff.
We translators do many things besides just the translating. We gotta do the timing, the first draft translation, the polishing, adding in stuff for the writers like who says what, adding in notes, checking the timing, spell/grammar-checking, and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. So it's not just translation. On a good day, I can do an ep of OP in a day, maybe less if I'm lucky. It's not good to rush TOO fast though, of course But it's a pretty intensive job and when you're done for the day, you really do feel exhausted even though you sat in front of a keyboard all day
EDIT: Oh yeah I should mention that to try to get OP done faster I don't do them episode by episode, I do them in batches, so it's hard to say exactly how long a single ep takes. My above answer was sort of an estimated guess.
I do graphic design… I know how it can be to get exhausted even if it is just sitting in front of the computer all day. Just keep up things at your own pace. I'm sure that is what we all want, just never rush. Keep it up man!
Hey Mato, quick question for you.
When you go back to sub the earlier eps (whenever that happens) Are you gonna translate Arlong and his crew as being Fish-men or Mermen? The only reason I ask is because I believe there is a difference in the OP universe, and that it comes up in the later eps.
They've said that they're trying to keep as close to the Viz manga release as possible, and their version (correctly) uses "fishman," so I'd assume the DVDs would use that.

Yeah, I know of the difference, but I'm not sure how that's going to be handled yet. I'll make sure it gets sorted out though. I just hope the list doesn't have something crazy. Do you know what 4Kids' translation called them early on?
The question is…. do we want to know? I don't know... I probably should be grateful for that.
Do you know what 4Kids' translation called them early on?
4Kids called them "mermen."
They also had an annoying tendency to have the mermen call the humans "P-U-mans," but that's another story ><
Well Mike Micfarland is coming to ACEN. He's working with the show right? Do you guys want me to try to ask him any questions that haven't been answered here/at Anime boston?
Of course ask questions if you think of anything. Depending when it is, more may be known now. Also if you keep asking why Toei thinks using Viz's translations is accurate… it will make an impact as opposed to one person asking.

He's the voice director, but I don't think we can expect too much info. about the dub until Anime Expo, which is coming at the end of May.
I wish you were right about that date (Yashouzoid), but I believe you are in the wrong ( Anime-Expo.org )
An accurate date would be somewhere around the end of June.
Heso!
I wish that it was at the end of May. I wish that they would give us a little extra official words before AX. Anyway I am watching some of Jaya now. I am looking forward to getting to see what Funimation does with everything.
Well, to avoid any confusion, I'm putting acoutdown to Anime Expo in my signature. If you're unsure, look at my signature.
Well Toei Animation, Inc. made a nice big update to their website if anyone wants to check it out: http://www.toei-anim.com
It looks like for their "One Piece" section everything is still based on the 4Kids version since, well, that's all that's aired so far.

They list Luffy, Zolo, and Nami as "Major Villain Characters" in the first section of their episode guide. Special.
I'm still waiting for FUNimation to put up their site.
Hmm… does anyone know if FUNi stated if they are keeping that stupid "Shonen Jump's" thing in the logo?
