You can get stem cells from non embryo sources, such as the remains of a newborn that are left inside of a mother, those left-over cells have the same stem cell possibilities as embryos.
From what I hear, there are three distinctly different types of stem cells.
The first two are adult stem cells, and those taken from the umbilical cord. The third type are embryonic.
Based on what I heard, there is no ban on stem cell research. The issue is government funding of embryonic based stem cell research.
There have been plenty of sucessful advances in placental and adult stem cells, but nothing fruitful from embryonic. So privatley funded pharmacutical companies don't touch it. But they do study the other two types of stem sells.
Basically what I'm saying is that the people were voting on whether the government should fund an area of medical research that privately funded companies believe to be fruitless.
