Yeah, rule of thumb for Danganronpa is to never search it on the internet until you're fully caught up. I'm going to certainly black out my media sources on it when V3 comes out, at least until I can play it.
Dangan Ronpa (Translated VN via SA) [Spoilers through DRV3]

Remember the good old days of Somethingawful? Did the guy ever finished it?
-
Today, the first trial of the second game took me almost 3 hours.
! I knew Teruteru was the murderer because I spoiled myself, so my inability to conceive that the one guy was insane and was going to kill people made me fail hard several times. I feel like a fucking moron.

Future side Episode 8
! I hate Ruruka with a passion. I think to me as of now she is literally the worst person of all. Forget Junko and Mukuro… Ruruka is the greatest asshole of all. SUCH a bitch. She needs to die in the worst fucking way possible.
! Ok, just needed to express that. -

! I hate Ruruka with a passion. I think to me as of now she is literally the worst person of all. Forget Junko and Mukuro… Ruruka is the greatest asshole of all. SUCH a bitch. She needs to die in the worst fucking way possible.
! Ok, just needed to express that.! As inexcusable as her last action was in this episode, you can't help but symphatize with her a bit.
! The girl has a big issue of lack of trust with anyone around her that dates back to her childhood. That incident with the bomb together with her difficult relationship full with misunderstandings with Seiko just made it worse.
! And the mastermind knows all that and is taking good advantage of Ruruka's security issues, by placing her with the most unfair forbidden action of all that have been revealed so far: to not let anyone leave the basement. Add to this the aforementioned lack of trust and we have a lethal coctel. Be it her boyfriend or anyone else, Ruruka's fears are justified. Not so much the way she deals with that big problem, but what else could she do, when the thought of dying the moment someone steps out of the place is overwhelming her? And she didn't even want to kill Izayoi in first place, it was an unfortunate accident derived of Ruruka being increasingly paranoid, as her life is at stake.
! I put myself in her shoes and wonder if I would do the same in her place. If I also had that lack of trust in the people that can determine my fate. Face it, the members of the Future Foundation are a house divided.
! Oh, and now I know her forbidden action, Ruruka has gained points to become one of the final survivors in the game. The flag is just too blatant. -

! Oh, and now I know her forbidden action, Ruruka has gained points to become one of the final survivors in the game. The flag is just too blatant.! Are you aware of what this episode implicated?
! The part where she feeds Sakakura a drug candy casts a strong suspicion on all interactions she had so far with Yoi and Kimura.
Why was Yoi so entranced with Ruruka and her candy? Cause he was addicted to it like a drug addict. Not out of loyalty, friendship or love, but because she got him addicted.
Why was Ruruka so obsessed with the fact that Kimura refused to eat her candy, despite how she repeatedly stated that sweets would kill her if she ever ate any? Because she feels the need to exert her control to anyone close to her, not because she wants the attention but because she's apparently a control freak.
! Now i'm aware that none of this was directly confirmed but that scene where she drugs Sakakura has completely no point otherwise, he snapped out of it right away but it clearly demonstrates she's willing to use this tool at her disposal fairly nonchalantly.
I should also add that if Yoi ever truly cared about Ruruka her forbidden action would not be a problem, nor did she ever attempt to explain her side to anyone. All she ever did was attempt to deceive, kill and screw over anyone else to save her measly life that no one cares for and rightly so.
! She's a bitch and someone needs to put her down but the sad fact is that she'll likely survive to the end because as much as i love DR it always tries to make the less interesting characters survive. -
! Regardless, she'll probably get redemption somehow at the end.
! Honestly, the killer, whoever is, knows well which are the the fortes and cons of each member, and is making sure to use that knowledge in his favor to pit the members of the Future Foundation against each other. And Ruruka is a perfect example of that gambit.
! Which reminds me, Kyoko is a detective. Her forbidden action must be related to that. "Not being allowed to say the name of the one behind the killing game" would be a good one. -

That's one hell of an accomplishment. And you know, she could have just revealed her forbidden action to Izayoi and if their relationship was genuine he would have stayed without putting up a fight. The fact we lost Kimura while she still lives is so sad.
-
Oh yeah, about Sakakura…
! If that flashback is anything to go by, this guy is going to redeem himself big in the end, perhaps by performing something heroic where he endagers his life.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
! She's a bitch and someone needs to put her down but the sad fact is that she'll likely survive to the end because as much as i love DR it always tries to make the less interesting characters survive.
! Not trying to play devil advocate or anything here, but IMO her way of doing things doesn't make her not interesting in the least, all the opposite actually. I also find her relationship with Kimura one of the most refreshingly realistic I've ever learned about.
! I'm also kinda disappointed in the fan reaction. Her issues have been on frank display for a while now, and it seems like people would rather take the easier, shallower interpretation. Not that she can be easily forgiven, but still… -
! This episode has a lot of indications of how much of an asshole she is to even take her side.
! Just consider how seemingly Yoi was the one person in the world she had, and after that it was Seiko. And without any fucks to give, without any remorse or care whatsoever she uses the death of one to hide the death of the other all to save her own ass. Like, seriously, she saw the bodies of her lover and her best friend and her reaction was to use them to protect herself.
! Not only that but she was also a target for Chuzo and Kizakura helped neutralized him, and instead of realizing that she can feel safe with this group her first concern is to fuck them over by trying to kill more people and control a new boy toy.
! No matter how you try to spin it, any sympathetic feelings she may have had in episode 5 mean completely nothing now, and the implication that she had Yoi with her through use of drugging and deceit is fucking unforgivable. No other character has been as much of a narcissistic bitch. -

She had me vocally cheering for Sakakura as the dude tried to open the door knowing it would kill her.
! On top of using Seiko, and murdering Yoi to save herself (which as Dom pointed out, she could have just talked to him), and trying to kill everyone, and killing Kizakura, it's even suggested that her relationship with Yoi was entirely a result of her brainwashing him. At least Munakata and Sakakura have people they cared for (not that it excuses their killyness). Sweets Bitch just wants to use and kill everyone for the sake of her own advancement. -
! I don't think her relationship with Izayoi was fake or anything of that. I think it was genuine, but at some point things went south and I guess it was then when she came up with the idea of making drugged candies.
! Boy, this is gonna be hilarious if she survives the game. No redeeming qualities on sight to even start theorizing.
! Granted, this is Danganronpa, so… you never know what's going to happen next.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

! And how amusing is going to be if the culprit turns out to be that person.
-
! unless the official translation said something else, I don't think that she had izayoi as a drugged up slave all their friendships.
! First, she as a kid could cook well, but the implication is that sayako was the one who provided the mind control drugs, or addiction control serum to boost sugar's adictivness. So they were true friends at least until the expulsion. last date where she could get it.
! Second, withdrawal. Even just sugar withdrawhal is painful, there is no way that izayoi in the middle of a drug/sugar withdrawhal would be so chill.
Sakakura could shake it off easily for a variety of reasons, shock, dosage, mental fortitude, etc.
! Third, even junko had loved ones, she killed them, but she loved them in her own twisted way. I dont want to deffend her callousnes, shes terrible, but i dont want to think that she was that evil before despair attacked. -

! Fourth, her messed up relationship with Kimura is full with misunderstandings, and Nagito's ax crazyness was the final nail in the coffin. If someone deserves all the blame is him.
! Fifth, her forbidden action is the most unfair only after "witnessing violence", and also a sign the traitor, whoever is, knows everything about every member. Ruruka's NG basically translates to "everyboy is my enemy". By setting her up like this, the traitor ensures no one gets out of the basement, and at the same time pits the members of the Future Foundation against each other. And after the expulsion Ruruka started to become extremly distrustful of her surroundings and anyone she would meet or know.
! Again, we are not defending her methods, what she did is unforgivable, but we have to also remember that she wasn't like this all her life.
! Hence why I said she still can redeem herself somehow. Time will tell, because the flag is so blatant now I doubt she's going to die. -
! I'd rather she died, I don't want her being the hope of the world, wasting sugar while people most likely are starving.
! Sayako said it clearly from the first day "If i eat sugar I will die", if that's not blunt and clear, I don't know what it is. -
! wouldn't be the first time an unlikeable character survived to the end
! just look at Togami or Kazuichi -
! Togami was a selfish asshole, I'll give you that, he barely got any human development, but why Soda, who didn't hurt, acuse or manipulate anyone for his own amusement would be in the same category as him? In the grand scale of things he's better than over half of the first game survivors, where everyone except Naegi actualy tried to kill sakura, naegi or everyone else.
! This being pre despair of course. -
! Souda is really really boring and doesn't really do anything to make you like him over the entire course of the game. By the end, he's just there for really flaccid comic relief based around being a creep over Sonia
! honestly I woulda preferred if Saionji survived over him, but she had to go and get Ishimaru'd right as her development was starting -
About Soda
! Yeah I didn't like him at all either. Just like I didn't like Hagakure. Reason being we already have the simple minded ones in the group
They felt unnecessary. We had Asahina in game one and Akane in two. Both were kind of normal if we are talking about intelligence and had fun light hearted personality that drives comedic scenes.
! So seriously Hagakure and Souta was unnecessary. There were so many other characters that deserve their slot. But I guess that might be the whole point. They have no purpose there or much character development and it's just luck they are still alive.
Really driving the point on how important luck is there.
! And please, Byakuya drove a lot of the plot and actually became a kickass help in the end. Except for episode 2. That was a dick move.
DR 1 had the decency to have two intelligent characters remain besides MC whereas DR 2 I almost feel sad for Hajime that he had to debate with characters from DR1 of his own intelligent level and ignore the rest of DR2 because goddammit do they suck.
! Edit: Luck -
Just because this is a work of fiction doesn't have to mean that each character eventually is going develop. Sometimes they are going to be stuck and barely undergoing change. That may make them a bit less appealing, but it also adds a sense of realism.
-
Of course a person that has been put through countless life or death situations and witness several dead bodies not changing at all is realistic.
What was I thinking -
Of course a person that has been put through countless life or death situations and witness several dead bodies not changing at all is realistic.
What was I thinking! You assume those experiences are always going to change them for better. Tell me, how much Togami changed after the campus? Barring the fact he isn't as much as a jerkass as he was back then, his personality pretty much remains the same.
-
! Neither end cast really has any characters I particularly care about. Hina and Akane are okay people, but pretty boring as far as characters go. Akane edges out Hina, but they're both basically the same character, so why did they both live.
! Byakuya's a douche all in all and got some good development in 2 before it turned out that that wasn't him.
! Toko's kind of hard to redeem, since she's a selfish shit and part serial killer. She had some fun moments in UDG, admittedly, but that game overall made her come off as a worse person.
! Yasuhiro's main crime is that he's boring and pretty much serves no role anywhere. Even the writing in the first game comments on how he wasn't meant to really have any development, though this may be because he was the first victim in the fakeout demo.
! Kyoko's Kyoko. I'm not as enamored with her as others are, but she's inoffensive.
! Naegi and Hajime are main characters and don't get to do much, though at least Hajime is interesting as a person, but they're both boring.
! Soda is a creepy little shit who I actually think had some decent material in his backstory, but none of it comes to light in his interactions, so you mostly just want him to die.
! Fuyuhiko is decent I guess. Probably the best of the remaining dudes in 2, but I really didn't like him at first, and would rather that development went to some other character.
! Sonia is pretty boring to me, and I suspected her of dying pretty much in every case. Her one redeeming quality is her relationship with Gundham, but without Gundham, I couldn't care less for her.
! As far characters that I would have liked to see survive: even though Sakura and Gundham are my favorite characters, I think their sacrifices are meaningful to their characters and I don't think I'd take that away from them. From the first game, Ishimaru definitely had his character development infamously cut short, and I really liked him, so seeing him die so anticlimactically made me a little mad (even if I saw it coming). Celeste might be another pick, since her murder case seemed beneath her, and her character seemed a bit incomplete.
! As for DR2, Ibuki is my big pick because she really didn't get to do much at all, and she was such a fun and lovable character. As much as I'm not a Mikan fan, she really got short-changed, too, with the worst murder motive and worst execution. I'd like to have seen more Peko, but unfortunately changing her death would change a lot of things. Really, I would have liked to see her character reworked so that she wasn't a huge tool. -
And this is where the problem lies. Characters some people think they are boring may be really appealing and likeable to others.
It never rains to everybody's taste.
-
! You assume those experiences are always going to change them for better. Tell me, how much Togami changed after the campus? Barring the fact he isn't as much as a jerkass as he was back then, his personality pretty much remains the same.
You kind of miss the point. I'm not saying it's for the better and even then your definition of better is going to be different from mine.
Your point was that they barely had any change which I disagree.
I think developing as a better person and developing into a worse person are both considered character development! All the survivors besides Hajime might be an idiot but none of them killed.
You cant really point at them and say hey you guys didn't get enough character development without realizing that them not killing anyone or going batshit crazy despite the circumstances IS a form of development.
You can say that they have no character development in a Slice of Life Genre but it falls flat in a situation like DR when temptations and I don't know, potentially dying the next second is all around the corner.
Luck in surviving is an uncontrollable factor but not killing others or being a manipulator says something about a character.
This is especially so in Byakuya case. He is smart. There are things he could pull off and continued his dickery after his second trial.
Yes, believe it or not. He could have fucked around more but he didn't.
He could have went full Komaeda but didn't. He stopped messing around and sabotaging situations for his own selfish reason towards the end.
! Now I'm not saying Souta deserve some points because he's a good natured idiot but he's in no way the same guy you see in the first trial.
He started doubting people, being really aggressive in his questioning. This can be picked up in the last few trials.
I don't really remember but even Hagakure had some shining moments.Development isn't really going from a hur durr evil guy to hurr durr evil guy that saves everyone in a few moments.
It doesn't work like that. -

I got really sad with:

DR2 became so hard for me to move on after that.! I mean, how can I get comfortable after discovering the character that I loved the most was evil all along?

Cute, isn't she? Being the only remnant who recovered her memories prior to the tragedy, she's probably not going to wake up from the coma in Future. -
! I maxxed up Tsumiki points :( she was the one I wanted to be good all along but I knew she's bound to be evil
-
Despair arc, episode 8:
! And the first to fall into despair was… Mikan!! No wonder she was the only one who got hit with the Remember disease, Junko brainwashed her easy. And she does it in a disturbingly arousing manner that I can't help but feel deeply unnerved by that.
! Poor Mitarai, he's on the verge of wanting to commit suicide. His talent is about to unwittingly break all hell loose in Hope's Peak.
! And Chisa is about to have a fateful encounter with Junko, despair intensifies.
! And to add more fuel to the fire, Chiaki has realized Izuru is Hajime! -
I've nearly finished Dangan Ronpa 2, with the exception of the epilogue. Personally, I thought it was a little better than original. I may or may not come in later to post my thought regarding the first two games.
On another topic: is the Dangan Ronpa 3 anime a prequel/sequel combo for the first two games or something? That's what I understand, at least. And also, is the narrative quality up to par with games?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
! I maxxed up Tsumiki points :( she was the one I wanted to be good all along but I knew she's bound to be evil
! She wasn't inherently evil. Just like she did with the other remnants of despairs, Junko used her ability to bring Mikan into despair. When Mikan's memories returned to her (because of the Despair Disease), she, like the rest of remnants of despair, was really, really, really, fucked in the head, and murdered Hiyoko and Ibuki.

Danganronpa 3 splits in two parts:
Side: Despair, a prologe prior to DR which narrates the events that eventually lead to the first game.
And Side: Future, a sequel to DR2 and the grand finale. This is the plot that ends the story.
Narrative wise it has nothing to envy the first two games IMO. The script was written by the original company, afterall. The reason it has been made into anime format and not game is because the producers stated the story and the narrative wouldn't be conveyed properly by using the same format of the first two installments.

I was gonna give the anime a go regardless, but given that you think highly of it, that makes me want to play it more.
-
Speaking frankly, I don't think, NOT BY A LONG SHOT, that many of the things I watched so far, and that had me at the edge of my seat, while experiencing a swirl of emotions rangin from thrill, to nervousness, to even being outright disturbed/scared, I don't think the experience would even be remotely close if this had been made into VN format.
Kodaka was spot on when they said that many of the developments taking place would be very difficult to convey if they were to use the same format.
-
So far the anime's been a mixed bag in my mind. Worth watching for closure, but they're not nearly as good as the games. The games give a lot of room to let characters develop and breathe while the anime is a lot more plot and situations than characters. Also there's some bad twists. Without much time to develop the characters, the plot points feel kind of cheap. On the other hand, they are entertaining, have some good music, and fill in some information gaps and are bringing this whole plot to an end (the next DR games are a separate continuity).
If you're going to watch, I suggest you do so in airing order (Future Ep 1 => Despair Ep 1 => Future Ep 2, etc…), since the series seem to have been built with that in mind. Also, though it's not entirely important, it might be worthwhile to play or watch the important bits of a playthrough of Ultra Despair Girls, since it is relevant. Likewise for reading the VN Danganronpa/Zero or finding some summaries.

As a most recent example of what I've just said above,
! Mikan's convertion to despair. The scene depicts Mikan almost about to rape Ryota while she's moaning, with breasts sticking out, rubbing them over Ryota's chest, then rubbing his crotch with her knee (she even says some lewd words such as "dick". Yes, she says exactly that!). When Junko pushes her away by kicking her face with her shoe, Tsumiki is overjoyed, looking up, blabbering things, bleeding from her nose, tongue out and drooling. Think this is not disturbing enough for you? Junko then drops her glasses on her butt and kicks it, which only further arouses Mikan and has her make hella disturbing grins.
! The entire thing is nightmarefuel incarnate.Go ahead, try to convey all that shit into VN and make it be as impactful.

How many episodes will it last? Its at 15 right now; how much more does it have to go?
-
12 per arc, 24 episodes in total. We are at episode 8 of each arc, so this means another 8 episodes to go between both.

That will work. Any place other than Crunchy Roll I can watch it.
-
Either Gogoanime or download it in Nyaatorrent. Someone might have better suggestions than mine, so keep asking.

The…
! first mutual school killing,
that alone would bump the rating up to M+.
-
Why does sometimes blood is red instead of pink?
-
The Future arc seems to have used red in all of its scenes as a style choice, probably to go along with the color palettes better and the tone. Despair arc, on the other hand, has stuck with pink, I'm guessing since that series emulates the games more. Unless there's some exceptions I'm forgetting, that's pretty much how it's been.

For some odd reason around these parts sexual related content is generally more frowned upon than violent content.
-
Despair 8
! That was pretty disturbing and it really makes you fear the power of Junko for making Mikan insane so rapidly. It was also a really good episode to set up the main events by having Chisa about to confront Junko, Nagito return in a phenomenal manner, and Chiaki placed in a situation we've been waiting for a while now.
! Probably the most exciting moment for me though was Nagito making the call of having Peko neutralize Mukuro. That little bit was very well done and kinda makes me feel sad about the reality of Peko inevitably being turned to despair as well.
! All things considered though, I was kinda hoping that the switch to despair would be more psychological than just a brainwashing video, though the video makes sense in that it would work on a large-scale and make sense in setting up the world-wide despair. Still, wanted to see things like Junko exploiting Mikan's past, or Hiyoko's nasty side, or Gundham's interest in darkness, Teruteru's lust and mother situation, etc. … that said, out of everything the one winning from this is Nagito who is clearly already insane from the get-go and winds up having a more interesting switch to despair. Though I wonder why he doesn't recognize Izuru later on when in captivity when here it seemed like he admired himRegarding the conversation about the anime's quality:
! Some episodes definitely lack in terms of story-telling, namely the set-up episodes for the Future side which were pretty laggy for me at first and hard to care about given how the characters were pretty much strangers. For me it started improving in quality at around episode 5 where we got a lot of exposition on Seiko and there was more direction to the set up than just a couple jerks being too intense about killing Naegi. Heck, I think episode 5 is a good example of how to make up for the lack of exploration and character depth in the games, and aside from Seiko I would say Kizakura was the only other one so far to receive such good treatment background-wise.
Then there's stuff like the despair girls episode which frankly felt filler-ish to me and spent too much time pretty much just to say "nope, it's not Monaka, btw this is what happens to her." Kinda wish that Gekkogahara had actually gotten to be a character instead of the whole Monaka subplot that didn't seem to go anywhere. Mostly because I was intrigued about her potential as an ultimate therapist.
! The despair side I've been enjoying a ton more, though the main disappointment in that one is that there's way too little focus on the 77th class, which is what pretty much everyone wanted to see in the first place. But then again, the only thing I can think about trimming is perhaps all the details from the Nagito/Seiko/Ruruka episode, and perhaps that entire second half of the second episode as it wasn't necessary to have such a long episode just to show that yes, Chiaki got to be class president.
! In the end though, it's hard to complain given that my favorite from DR2 was Chiaki so having so much of her has just been awesome, and same goes for the ultimate impostor turning out to be so awesome… everyone else though kinda just got tossed aside though, which is a shame. -
! There are still 8 chapters left, maybe falling to dispair wasn't psychologically charged, but getting out definitely will.
! It seems like mitarai helped junko and bolted out of there.
! I'm scared for nanamine -
I have a hunch.
! Barrin Tsumiki and Nagito, I think is not going to be Junko who completely makes the rest of Class-77 fall into despair. Is gonna be Chisa the one that gives them the final push. Who else but the class moral support, the one person who managed to make this group of untamed and talented students get along with each other, would have more influence over them? Whether the way that may happen is intentional by Yukizome or not is left in the air.

How does the future side of DR3 incorporate the DR2 characters? Are they still waiting at Jabberwock Island or what?
