I watched the dub, and it was pretty good among dubs. I hear some people weren't used to the robot's autotuned voice, but I thought it was natural in English. The sub is really good too.
-
Ok, caught up to Dandy (in dub, the only anime other than the Hellsing OVAs I've watched like that) and I'm beyond impressed. The music and animation are SO good, and the individual episodes can be pretty amazing. I swear to god I thought QT was female, and I'm honestly going to continue believing it since otherwise he's a 7 year old boy.
Off to find a commemorating Dandy avatar. -

Off to find a commemorating Dandy avatar.I like the AV!
In the JP version, it's more believable that QT is just a guy with a high-pitched voice.

Only Betelgeusians are allowed to be lesbian in this universe.

grabs chainsaw whilst screaming for his life

That whole bit reminded me of the printer scene in Office Space only with more firearms.

I know, right?! I totally said exactly this after watching that ep. When they were out in the field attacking the calendar it was very Office Spacey.
But I'm more talking about Meow's reaction when he realized his dream girl was a lesbo.
-
I also can't wait to see what secret Dandy holds for the Gogol empire. Knowing this series it'll most likely be something troll-ish and silly.
Edit: Also this -
!

Welp, I'm officially psyched to the max.

Been playing around with GIMP and edited together this image. Figured I could share it with other fans:

It's definitely been done before, but this might be the best resolution you can get.

! All hail the new Space God Dandy
-
I'm in the subs camp for Space Dandy. I like the english voice acting a lot actually, but a lot of the lines just get on my nerves ("ow, my feels" - episode 8). Plus, the subs have Akio Ohtsuka voicing a toaster.
6, 7, 9 (Masaaki Yuasa homage?), 10, 12 and 13 were my favorite episodes.
-
I'm also a fan of the subs. I think that the VAing is a lot better in the Japanese version. It can be annoying having to read subtitles, though.
I really loved the Space Race, Plants are People Too, Chameleon Alien, Never Remembering You, and Even Robots Fall In Love episodes.
-
9 (Masaaki Yuasa homage?)
A animator commonly involved in his productions was responsible for the episode. An actual episode helmed by Yuasa himself is coming up in the second cour.
-
Just finished all the episodes that aired. Some beautiful animation all around.
-
The 2nd season's promos are being aired now. It also appears they are introducing another character.

This looks to be even bigger and better than season 1

Yup, no cut on the animation budget as I feared.
This is going to be good.
-
Welcome back baby indeed
-
Waiting eagerly for Season 2~

This looks stunning, I can't wait for more Dandy!
-
Dang, this show just took the parallel universes concept to a whole new level. Great reintroduction episode.
-
I'm calling for a sequel series following the misadventures of Triangle Dandy. Watch as they journey to such fantastic and unbelievable and amazing lands as the Planet of the Squares.
-
This might've been the best episode yet. Emo Dandy murdered me at the end.
I think at least some of you might agree with my observation that, while the quality of the individual episodes varied, the quality average kept going up ever so slightly until the end of the first half. I hope I'm right and this trend continues into the 2nd season. This debut is certainly encouraging in that regard.
-
Personally, I thought the middle episodes were generally the best of S1 and then the quality dipped again as it got close to the end, though the last episode was pretty good.
Season 2 is off to a pretty stellar start though. That episode was really great. I have high hopes.
-
Laughed hysterically at the end, and the whole episode was great stuff. I didn't even get all the references and it was still superb.
-
Depressed Dandy was a nice touch but the rest of the episode was a bit… soft? Not crazy enough for a Space Dandy comeback.
-
The dubbers for this show must be having a complete blast! I found myself laughing more at the delivery of lines than the actual lines themselves.
-
Heh, when I saw the PV I thought the teal-haired guy was going to be like a rival. How wrong was I! Admittedly I expected a little more punch from the opening episode, but it was still quite entertaining. The voice actors' energies are infectious.
-
Good episode, not stellar, but I liked it. The final scene was pure win.
-
This episode definitely went for more creepy/solemn this time around. As much as I liked the ukulele man, I wished he was explored more. I did like that the episode showed Dandy's surfing abilities again in the episode.
Also just learned about Terror in Resonance. With Watanabe and Kanno reuniting again I'm definitely interested, and heard good things. Just hesitant since it's a genre I tend to avoid.
-
I don't know, I am still amazed how this series holds his quality so damn high every week (havn't seen E3S2 yet). At first I expected some boobs in space, but then this series pushed my expectations further and further. After many episodes I finally saw why I love Space Dandy so much. It reminds me of these really old but originally SciFi-novels/episodes from Stanislav Lem and Asimov I've read in my youth. Every new page was a Gedankenexperiment filled with humor, new words and ideas.
This anime follows this tradition so much. There are no borders in thoughts and storytelling! Together with the obligatory japanese quirkiness, the awesome visuals and the cool soundtrack, they created something, excuse my lack of words, extraordinary.
The only thing that slightly disturbs me is how the creators use music. There is almost zero background music in every episode. But when an awesome scene kicks in, awesome music ensues, so yeah…. -
Episode 3 was so bizarre even for Space Dandy.
The part where they sail up the water tornado was amazing. It reminded me to something out of an animation festival.
-
Awesome episode. Had me in stitches a lot.
I especially loved how cartoon-y it was, Meow chasing the fish was very reminiscent of Tom & Jerry.
[hide]We finally see evidence this episode of a secret power that saves Dandy's life. It even seems like he is aware of its existence, from the way he looks at it right before it teleports the rest of his head away from the baking planet. I'll bet that in all of the episodes that haven't ended with "The End", even if it looks like Dandy should have been blown up or something, this cosmic energy has saved his life somehow.[/hide]

@ Wintermute: I read a lot of Asimov as a kid, too. Did you ever read any Heinlein? This show can definitely go right down the same paths that those classic sci-fi authors have tread.
A lot of sci-fi stories can take themselves too seriously, but Dandy doesn't suffer from that problem! I love how the show seems to be able to take a lot of these crazy/creepy/weird ideas from sci-fi and turn them into comedy gold.

That was Shinya Ohira. Remember that skateboarding sequence from Animatrix? That was him.
-
What an episode, my mouth stayed open all the time. How did they get such ideas? Brainstorming and then the craziest plot wins?
@benjamminbrown I checked, but I only know Heinlein through the Starship Trooper movie. I have to change that for sure.
@damnit Sander where does your sig come from?
-
It's Gundam Build Fighters.
-

Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough For Love were pretty good Heinlein novels. I don't know if I've read any others by him.
-
Thanks for the info, you two
-
This episode was fabulous.
I was crackin' up the entire time!
-
The 4th was quite silly, and not in a fun way.
I dont even like musicals on the first place and this was a pretty bad one (was that the point? I dont really care)
At least the teaser for the next one is promising.
-
This episode was definitely a musical and a high school setting parody, and I'm surprised at how well it was pulled off and felt like a parody of American specific stories, though I don't read/watch high school manga/anime or know how big of a Market American movies like Dirty Dancing, High School Musical, or films like She' All That are in Japan.
As a person that likes that kind of stuff, I had a blast with the episode. The training montage was a funny joke (though I wanted at least one self-referential joke about how out of place it was). I'm also looking forward to flash mobs recreating that end dance, but I dunno if Space Dandy is big enough to make that happen. And the giant robot stopping the hulk-fusion at the end? So unexpected.
-
This episode was so so. But I couldn't stop laughing at the Final Test scene. A room full of highschool aliens and Dandy screams out loud "Watch out an UFO!", grabs the sheet of his neighbor and passes, lol.
-
I was in shock most of the episode. Truly did not expect it to go the way that it did.
The final song/dance number was pretty awesome. Ass is my ultimate candy! Healthy young butt cheeks!
-
This show truly doesn't give a fuck. It doesn't limit itself with the notions of genre or setting. It is whatever it feels like being at the moment.
And it's glorious.
This season has been a blast so far.
-
The training montage was a funny joke (though I wanted at least one self-referential joke about how out of place it was).
I do feel like the montage made fun of itself when it finally came to an end. That last pose they did on top of the huge rock was held just a little too long in complete silence. It felt so awkward, lol.
And the giant robot stopping the hulk-fusion at the end? So unexpected.
I loved that part, and it was great when he joined in the final dance.
-
Someone needs to compile a list of references in this episode.
There was Hulk, E.T, X-men (that robot was obviously Sentinel), Gunbuster's training montage and probably Rocky too, The Fly (lol), Twilight Zone and the list goes ooooooon.
