I can't ever look at this game without thinking its genesis went along the lines of "OKAY THERE'S A CHEERLEADER AND SHE FIGHTS… ...A LAMP MONSTER! WHOOOOOOOO!"

Fun is officially dead I guess.

A Family Guy reference, really? Way to stink up the thread. But yes, that's… kinda how every game starts development. Did you think it went another way?
-
I think it's more telling that a Family Guy reference is the most quality way I can think of to describe it.
Have fun grasping at straws defending your shitty game I guess.
-
Don't bother responding to them dude. What really matters here now is what I think and those that possibly think the same way. For what it's worth, I think this game has a great idea and from what I've seen in the trailers, the adrenaline beat-em-up styled gameplay impresses me a whole lot. I mean, taking a western high school setting with the typical stereotypical archetypes and embracing them into something flat out ridiculous within a B-rate horror movie setting is just my cup of tea. Surely I'm not buying the game at full price since it's a new IP and I'm not all that familiar with the developer's other works, but I'm giving it a chance despite the reception.
I mean, fuck. I don't really give a shit. Naysayers got nothing to lose. Why waste breath on them?

Oh hey, I can tell the quality of a game before playing it! Lookit me!
Can you tell me how Bioshock Infinite is going to be as well while you're here? A masterpiece, right?

I think you're misinterpreting my apprehension and general apathy regarding this title. I've spent like a million years following Suda's career as a director and producer and whatever other stuff he was more heavily involved with (everything after Fire Pro Wrestling) and he has almost constantly let me down when I actually tried out the stuff. Like every single thing he worked on was "wow that seems awesome!" and then was a muddled disappointment (or just plain awful game coupled with neat ideas) after release until K7, which was the only time I was hyped for a game he worked on that came to fruition. It was endlessly rewarding for how truly experimental it was and how many great mistakes it made reaching for incredible heights. Reading Hand in Killer7 was amazing to me because I could further see how much was left on the drawing board and go "man this was kind of a tremendous failure but it was a beast doing it. salutes Killer7"
But I'm also pretty sure those days are behind him and in fact never even quite defined him. He's not one of the more interesting people working in the biz in the gameplay department. Even Shadows of the Damnd was probably only a great game because he had Shinji pulling the reins a bit and keeping him in line. It's basically preparatory apprehension, but after the way NMH turned out for me (I did honestly enjoy the games to a degree and am glad I beat them, but they were also flawed and heading in the direction of "I don't think I can care that much anymore about Suda") I just feel like it's pretty obvious what Lollipop Chainsaw is going to be.
Like other games, even before NMH, that Grasshopper touched, it'll just be a derivative hack and slasher with a style that may, or may not, be your thing. I can get looking out for interesting characters who work in the game biz and everything Suda has touched (whether or not he's in charge) has shown his hand is in it, but I think it's pretty fair to also realize
This man has had a pretty mediocre track record and you guys . Stylish aesthetics aside, its not going to be that difficult to foresee that if he's working in another hack and slash, it's best to go in expecting serious B-Movie tendencies (in the technical deficency department, which in video games I find harder to forgive, or find funny, since you're basically stuck playing a derivative product instead of just watching with your eyes). Because that's what he has done in the past with this genre.
Nawimean?
Not trying to bring you guys down but I think I'm well within my rights to post "pretty sure this is gonna be a forgettable game"
Like there's the experimental adventure games Suda has been with (i.e. Silver Case) which are one thing
But Lollipop Chainsaw is in the vein of Grasshopper's licensed anime games and NMH and it hasn't so far shown what its hack and slash gameplay even looks like. After NMH I wouldn't be surprised if it just wasn't that good? I also don't personally think the cheerleader/zombie thing looks very fun at all. If the game's combat system is actually interesting and it's a blast to play and its cast is actually charming and fun to watch get fucked up, then okay, I couldn't see it coming but that's cool.
For the record my predicted critical reviews of this are like 7.5 OUT OF 10 FUN GAME BUT SHORT AND DOESN'T CHANGE MUCH UP BUT 7.5 FOR THE AESTHETIC.
-
Game's got some cool character designs and style. No reason to knock it before metacritic has spoken and we can take its Frankensteined multicorpse of a score as a factual assessment of quality. Unless you're like me and find fault in a- wait, what point was I trying to make?
Hey, I have plenty of things to push me away from this forum. But you know what, I can easily put up with you.
BAZING!
I'm glad you're thinking of me. It's so sweet of you.
-
I am pretty sure I verbalized my doubts far better than simply "knocking it just cuz" and I also promptly stated I have no interest in dragging on anyone's fun if they find themselves hyped for the game.
Or is actually discussing something frowned upon in this establishment. I think by now people on Arlong Park should get used to the fact that if I'm poking fun at something I can probably explain in detail why I am doing it and it's not very fun to be written off as HATIN'. It's like some confirmation bias junk. Especially since I don't like stepping on people's fun and now you just make me feel bad!
-
Nah, your points are fair. I'm just throwing in the usual disclaimer on opinions of something before it's released, haha.
-

And I don't really give a give a damn.
I enjoyed many receptively bad games.
Almost as much as good games or great games even.Preach. Talk. Naysay. Whatever.
It's easy to type a few lines and play critic. -
Perfectly understood, Beast. I wish you had made that your post earlier, it came across as you just trollin'. I'm sad you don't enjoy most of his games like I do. I actually find many flaws in them myself, but the style and fun factor always blows me straight past them. I actually sustained physical harm playing NMH1&2. XD
-
My apologies then, since I did come in and only flippantly state a joke at its expense.
And I don't really give a give a damn.

It's easy to type a few lines and play critic. It doesn't remove anything positive you could get from this. If I've played previous hack and slash games with this man's involvement (ala Samurai Champloo Sidetracked, or NMH itself) and I can say that I am weary of it, I'm free to discuss it as it's an informed opinion. Maybe somebody hasn't and they flat out think it looks bad, or just don't care about Suda's style of "punks not dead tits nerd culture". It's okay. It doesn't trample on you unless they are actually personally being insulting. Just feels like you're taking any flack at Lollipop Chainsaw personally when you have no reason to, because it does not reflect upon your person at all.
It isn't really "playing critic", as if that itself implies that people only criticize to hurt. Which also isn't true. And personally I like plenty of games that do not have the best of public, or critical, perception. The important thing is that I realize why I like it and if I care enough about looking more in-depth into it, why I think it succeeds and has merit. Or maybe I just flat out like something because it appeals to me instinctively and I care less for any critical angles as to why I think it's good.
It's okay if people don't think something looks good just based on an aesthetic, or some ideas about its gameplay, or something.
But it's also okay if people look forward to something for the same reasons.
I think the two can co-exist in a thread and don't have to be mutually exclusive, or for other sides to take it personally. Like, if people aren't allowed to express their annoyance at something, or just be unimpressed with it, the thread is simply neutered. I can understand wanting something to be more about friends being excited for a game they think looks cool and I'm sorry if it was intrusive to it.
-
One has to wonder if the game is gonna draw controversy due to it taking place in a school and involving you mass killing what were once students. I could totally see Fox News going for it.
Oh, how I hope. Be awesome if a Suda51 game finally got mass exposure. Any press is good press.
-
@Holy: You have your reasons, and I fully understand now that you made yourself clear. I just don't care for comments or one-liners like "enjoy your bad game", "I told you so", or what goes it. What good does that do other than start a fight and attempt make everyone else look bad or worse? Like I said, it's an easy thing to do as there is nothing to lose. Why go through the effort speaking out against such statements?
I'm not trying to seclude anyone or anything.
Everyone is free to say what they want.
But if I'm making things seem that way, then I'll stop. -
I certainly expect to be able to play the game and afterwards be able to go 'That was fun.' instead of 'That was an unsatisfying experience'. That's certainly enough for me. At least, I expect the game to have good enough combat that I can still really enjoy the humor and wit in the game.
I also agree with Hiroy about 'one-liners'. If you're going to go in a thread where a lot of people are planning to like and buy a game, you need to at least explain your reasons for thinking so. Holy did a very good job at explaining her points afterwards.
-

Yep, hit it on the head. Tho I'm infamous for doing it myself over the years. ;_; I sorry.
-
I, uh… yeah I apologize too. I get out of hand when people push my buttons. Enjoy your cheerleaders and zombies, gang.
-
Oh nice, that's good to hear.
Never got the "we release that DLC in this country and in that we won't" policy -
A new Japanese trailer showing the anime costumes in action, revealing the Japanese vocal cast, showing all the Zombie Rock Lords and revealing the new Japanese release date which is actually 2 days behind the US, so we are getting it first. Interestingly it seems Juilet is voiced by a different Japanese actress depending on the console you get it for. No doubt the voice actresses are popular if they're doing that. A Japanese vocal option will not be present on the US and UK release, all Tara Strong all the time.
Lol, auto-tune.
-
Hmmmm….The Japanese version seems to make a whole load more sense than the American version for some reason....
So I'm assuming there'll not be an option to have Japanese voices and subtitles in the Western version?
-
^What? Sense? Uhh?
Not that exited over costumes for some reason.
Too much otaku culture for my tastes. -

How? It's an American based game, but developed by a Japanese studio. Several of Suda's games have ONLY had English voice acting, but they began adding Japanese dubs to hopefully make his games sell in Japan for a change. They'll totally whoring out to the otakus with Lollipop Chainsaw in a last ditch effort after adding a Japanese dub full of celebrities to Shadows of the Damned did nothing for sales.
And no, Europe and US releases have been confirmed to only have the English track.

All outfits (except the preorder outfits) will be available on disc.

Really? So I don't have to download anything to get all of them (except the pre-order ones)? Speaking of which- what would the pre-order outfits be?

GameStop: Ashley J. Williams
GameStop PUR Members: Jimmy Urine
Amazon: Rockabilly
Bestbuy: Goth Girl & Foxy Funk -
This game is so for me. Can't wait to go plunk my money down at Gamestop!
-
Not that dual audio matters to me or anything, since the game takes place in America. But still….Nobuhiko Okamoto as a necromancer super-villain.
-
I'm glad you're thinking of me. It's so sweet of you.

Bestbuy: Goth Girl & Foxy FunkMy my, that makes it difficult then. Gotta find a way to somehow get all of them.
-
There's no shortage of costumes in the game as is. I'm great with just getting Ash.
-
Meet your English vocal cast, ladies and gentlemen!
-
Hey, Tara, nice shirt!
-
I know what you're saying. Tara's shirt is pretty distracting.

Video showing off the Zombie Rock Lords: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-bosses-lollipop-chainsaw/728052
Also I thought Tara Strong voicing Juliet was known since the first trailer? Apparently not cause Twitter is a-buzz and Strong is glad she can finally "spill the lollipops" about doing the role… it was seriously that unknown?
-
I don't think it was unknown. It was mentioned in this thread earlier I think.
-
Michael Rooker as a Zombie Rock Lord is just tremendous.
-
I don't think it was unknown. It was mentioned in this thread earlier I think.
It was, and I thought it was general knowledge. But apparently the voice cast video was the first official announcement? Odd.
-
"What's a man without a penis? What's a penis without a man?" LOL
Michael Rosenbaum is THA MAN!
Definitely buying this game on Day One. -
I really hope it's a line in the game, but could just be improv.

First Trophy
-
Was gonna do it anyways. Not gonna view any of the others, don't wanna spoil.
-
Zed’s Dead, Baby, Zed’s Dead
Best trophy name ever!

The game will include licensed music in the soundtrack… and the tracklist is not being received well at all.
http://www.siliconera.com/2012/03/30/the-full-list-of-licensed-music-in-lollipop-chainsaw/
I've never heard Five Finger Death Punch (but have heard OF them) and the only song I know of Skillrex is Reptile's Theme (which I think is great) but it seems they're not of popular opinion… then again, Siliconera is kinda a weeaboo based audience.

Faux commercial anyone? http://kotaku.com/5899438/watch-lollipop-chainsaws-blood+splattered-cheerleader-cleans-up

A new Japanese video that shows off some more gameplay.
It kinda reminds me of Kingdom Hearts' battle system.
