Yeah, David Tennant is a great doctor, my personal favorite. I hope you enjoy what you've yet to see!!!!!! In my opinion, though, the most exciting things happen before series 5.
Doctor Who

@Mr.:
I really liked the clockwork droids (forgot their specific names)
They're generally reffered to as the Clockwork Robots. Girl In The Fireplace is a great episode… apart from when the Doctor pulls that "drunk" bollocks.
The guy that wrote that episode (and the WWII episode with the Gas Mask Zombies in season one) is the guy who is in charge of the show now. Proper good stuff.
His stories in seasons 3 and 4 are absolute treats as well.
-
I got into the show a couple years back. Recently I've been watching the classic series (mostly first and second doctor). The first doctor story that stood out for me the most was "The Aztecs". I thought the Dalek episode felt a couple parts too long :S. LOVED the second doctor (in case you couldn't tell from my sig). Thought "The Mind Robber" and "The War Games" were both absolutely fantastic.
I've seen bits and piece of the other classic doctors. Mostly a couple episodes of each here and there.
Now as for the new show. The 9th/10th (because it REALLY is the same story and era)
I thought was great. It's what got me into the show in the first place. I do heavily prefer Matt Smith though. Tennant's era had a nack for getting a little sappy for my tastes. I do think however that DT has pretty big acting chops and some of those moments could have looked much sillier under lesser actors. I think I started enjoying it less after going back to the classic series and seeing what a perfect follow up series 5 was for that. It really brought it back to basics but still took the character is new directions (and looks like it will do that even MORE in series 6). The first few series in a way feel estranged from the earlier show and had a more noticeable difference in style. Although, this is doctor who after all. Part of what makes it great is that it does change a bit with different doctors. -

Your description of Tennant's era is near enough spot on though I feel its a lot of bad writing that lets it down fairly often.
@GumGumBattleAxe:River's character annoys me in one particular way- the actress that plays her just isn't that attractive to me- certainly not as much as Karen Gillan
Ah man, as hot as Karen Gillan is Alex Kingston would definitely still get it.

Ya know who I would really love to see again? Claire Blume's character from the End of Time, the woman estimated to be the doctors mother. Is there any hope that she'll come back?
-
Yeah I would like to see old Bloom-y touched upon again, but it'd cause a riot. RTD intended her to be Doctor's Mother, but left it open so 'it can be whoever you want it to be.' - Half the fandom takes RTD's opinion of mother as Gospel; half the fandom say 'it's who I want it to be canonically' and that's not even mentioning the idiot stragglers who say cracray shit making threads like 'I No Hoo The White Lady Is: She's Amy Pond in the Future"
That'd cause a war, Battleaxe.

Hmmm…....well it would make sense for her to be the mother based on her dialogue and the fact that the doctor does recognize her when he's pointing the gun (ruling out amy pond, I think). I'll assume its his mother until its explained differently, in an episode (which unfortunately due to the time lords' forced return to the time war I doubt she'll be seen again). Now, about Paul McGann's line in the movie about him being half-human on his mother's side (I'm watching the end of time with audio commentary right now and tennant bought this up), I just chalked that up to his post-regeneration trauma and saying whatever popped into his head, be it true or not.
-
The suggestions are it could be Romana (not too fond of this one) or Susan (I think this one is quite brilliant, even though I don't believe in it definitively; I wouldn't mind if this was canon)
I'm in the Mother Camp.
-

yeah, me too. But hey- one day someone might bring back that character and it might be someone else, so no warmongering from me on this one.
-
If it's a canonicity issue this is the stance I take:
It is until it isn't.
RTD intended it to be the Doctor's mother but it was never said on screen. If some one else in the future decides to retcon that into something completely different in the future then fine. Thats fine too. It is until it isn't. It's pretty much the same stance I take with spin-off media. TV is gospel. What happens there cant be debated but if a book, a comic or an audio should take place within those confines and theres nothing to say that they couldn't or wouldn't happen then theres no reason NOT for them to fit.
IE Theres a couple of Fifth Doctor and Turlough audios and books but almost NO place for them to fit so its fairly unlikely that they actually happened
-
Hahaha in the audio commentary for the End of Time pt. 2, Tennant keeps talking about Bloom's character and her performance and John Simm keeps following him up with a "because she's ya MUM" or "isn't that because she's YA MUM" and Tennant keeps having to reply "Well we don't know for sure!"
Well, the Master definitely thinks Claire Bloom's his mom. Can we really be brave enough to disagree? lol
By the way, because my girlfriend suckered me into waiting to watch the latest Christmas special until she and I could see it for the first time together, I just recently saw it. I thought it was absolutely fantastic, blowing just about every other Christmas special out of the water in terms of acting (from EVERYONE: Smith, Darvill, everyone in it did a fantastic job at their role) writing, and imagery. It was a thrill to watch and I do believe I'll watch it again sometime!
So, does anyone know for sure how long Rory and Amy are going to last in this upcoming series, if not the full series itself?
-
No one knows much for sure about series 6 at all apart from whats been said in DWM and in the trailer.

Word is that Mr and Mrs Pond are due to be finished the end of this series. Whether or not that's the end of the first half or the second we don't know.
Kinda hope myself that they stay on a lil longer.

Somewhat related. Tennant is apparently going to marry Georgia Moffet.
So….I'm fairly certain there's an incest joke to be had here.

whooooooooooooaaaaaa what?!?
Well, I had wondered if she shared the last name as the head writer, but is there an extra t in there? moffett as opposed to moffat? I dunno…
Congrats, Dave. You ain't gettin' any younger. 'Bout time you settled down.

No.. it gets wierder than that. It's Moffet as in Peter Moffet, Peter Davison's real name.
She's Peter Davison, The Fifth Doctor's real life daughter,

I'm not into Shipping; I find it can be incredibly creepy at times, but since they got together I've wanted this too happen. Girl is hot and like 13 years younger IIRC; and then you've obviously got all the Who connections that would just make Who more awesome "Oh and Tennant's father in law was Davison" and that lucky kid; Dad as Doctor and Grandad as Doctor; and Mum as the Doctor's Daughter. No pressure !
-
that's pretty cool…the kid's gonna HATE doctor who, though, watch out...
hahaha flux, nice silvers rayleigh quote there

Hey is there a story between pt. 6 of the seeds of doom and pt. 1 of the masque of mandragora?

Isn't it bad enough we already had Tom and Colin Baker?
Even though they had no relation.

And I sure can tell!
My friend was kind enough to copy all of Series 5 and burn it onto a disc for me, so I've seen the first 4 episodes (just got done with the first half of Time of the Angels), and I really like Matt Smith. He's a fantastic actor, and fits the role of The Doctor really, really well.
Also, I thought the episode "The 11th Hour" was just superb! The whole scene with him talking to the Atraxi at the end was goosebump inducing.
-
I think that Atraxi scene (and the bit leading up to it.) was my fave scene of everything last year. Although the whole episode itself is just great. Plenty of jokes like Rory having to dress up as the Raggedy Doctor (even more amusing when you consider Rory dressing up even more recently.)
My only problem with that ep is Prisoner 0 just didn't (and still does't) click with me.
I really need to get around to watching the eps again (with commentary too.) since I got them on Blu-Ray and only watched the first ep.
-
This is going to sound very lame and completely uneducated of me, but my favorite thing about the Eleventh Hour was the fact that Matt Smith was wearing (more or less) Tennant's costume for most of the episode.
-
Probably more directed at Sympathy but anyone got any good Big Finish releases since Legend of the Cybermen to share? Kinda hankering to hear some (Although STILL not done Solitaire.)

The Eleventh Hour is easily my favourite episode of season 5, one of the strongest regeneration stories and hell - one of the best new-Who stories there has been so far!

The series does get much much better on rewatch. Even The Beast Below didnt seem so bad (comparatively) the second time around. Victory of the Daleks also seemed much better paced.

Only some of the CC's and EDA Season 4. Which has been amazing. AMAZING.
I've heard the recent Seventh Doctor arc has been really good but I havent been following his audios at all. Wanted to hear the Fifth Doctor reunion arc aswell but never got around to it.
Did follow Demon Quest though. That was really good throughout. Pretty damn brutal in places, particularly with some of the murders in part two. The last part was a bit… uhhh bizarre but it ended leading, hopefully, into the next series.
Got Quinnis to listen to which should be interesting. Theres very little pre-An Unearthly Child Who so I'm looking forward to it. Heard good things.
And seriously man. Your doing yourself a huge disservice every day that you dont listen to Solitaire. There isnt a better Companion Chronicle at all.
-
I need to get the EDA 4 series. Finale looks to have Lucie and Daleks back judging from the covers so~ last one I got was Death in Blackpool so XD
And I think I'm one of the few people who didn't hate Victory of the Daleks the first time around. It was barmy, spitfires vs spaceships in Doctor Who? Why not.
I think the bad rap that ep gets is due to the new Dalek design (which I didn't like till I picked up the figures, they look pretty damn awesome now.)
-

I actually liked that episode, but probably because it was my first Dalek episode. I can see why people didn't like it much since the Daleks didn't really do much except make a pure form of themselves and expose Britain for a few minutes, but… that was it.
I wanna see one fall down the stairs xD just the thought of one of The Doctor's greatest enemies getting owned by falling down stairs cracks me up every time.

It's certainly better than season 3 (though the Eight Legs finale was brilliant). Pretty much all of the stories this year have been Death in Blackpool calibre though. Bar maybe one or two.
Still love the new Dalek design. It's just…. right.

how do you figure? They look a little bit more simplistic, and have a unique color for each one. That's not only atypical of dalek thought, but its plain un-dalek-like to me for them to have different colors like they do now.
-

Simplistic is good. They always were.
They always did have different colour schemes for different ranks (usually had black head tops) as well as Davros' Imperial Dalek Army in white. Atleast in this case its plainly right in front of you which Dalek does what. A simplistic design with a colour that tells you everything about the type of character it is.
Have you played City of the Daleks? The colour scheme works perfectly in it
-
The colour scheme reminds me of the Eighth Doctor comics and the old movies. Both of which is good.
I like how all of them now have ranks too. I hope we see that played out a bit more.
I need to download more of the games, only got the Cyberman one which was brilliant. Back then I was hoping that the rumoured DW game on the Wii was gonna be a port of them.

Never played but I heard it was abysmal.
The Adventure Games arent bad for free endeavors. Pay money and its a rip off.
As far as it goes:
City of the Daleks -
Pretty much a great Doctor Who story. Expands the Dalek back story and shows what the updated Skaro looks like. Amazing attention to detail. Matt Smith is brilliant and a scientist coloured Emperor just feel right.Blood of the Cybermen -
Pretty much the video game equivalent of a Big Finish story. Great bits of sci-fi. Great use of the Cybermen. Again, amazing attention to detail and fantastic respect for the classics, bringing back the Cybermats. As far as we know these are from Mondas/Telos aswell. The chest plate is just far FAR better than the Cybus one. No idea why they didnt go for it instead.TARDIS -
Possibly the most disappointing of the lot. Pretty short and only two or three rooms in the entire game. Still got some great ideas though. Not enough "in the TARDIS" stories.Shadows of the Vashta Nerada -
Pretty long to make up for TARDIS and it's not too bad. Not the best and the Vashta are hardly put to any use. Groaned hard when I found out they became skeleton-suit-zombies again. They dont seem to do too much with the story but it does come off fairly well overall. At an hour or so each - fully voice acted, they are definitely worth a go.
-
I agree, most of the fandom hate them and are fuming and headesking and nerdraging and the like; but I like the new Dalek design.

Not stairs but theres a great bit of model work done for the Dalek's "Final End" in the last episode of The Evil of the Daleks thats pretty cool. Love how clumsy some of it is.

*sigh here we go.
Theres good writing, theres bad writing and then theres Doomsday.
Theres better fanfictions written by 8 year old girls than that one.
AN DEN. DA SAIBERMAN FIGHT DA DALIKZ.
-
oh come on im sure that was on everyone's mind at some point…and it wasn't so simple or childish either. It could have been worse; Davies could have made them even in strength. Besides, has that ever happened before? It's a big deal to have two major adversaries fight each other rather than the doctor for a change. Coupling that with the dramatic loss of Rose and you've got a decent episode. It's not one of my personal favorites but I don't think its a bad story.
Are you a writer? Because the way you hound on writing all the time leads me to believe you definitely are.

Not a writer nope. Just someone with standards who understands what makes good sci-fi. I'm not as full on nerdy as some people get with it. I hound on RTD's writing all the time because so much of it is so bad. I did make a fairly detailed post a page or two back explaining why. It's not just RTD though. Not everyone is infallable. Not even the Moff. See The Beast Below for a half baked story.
Army of Ghosts sets up some good points and it starts off as a really good and interesting story but Doomsday is absolutely abysmal writing. You seem to like the concept of "two major adversaries fighting each other rather than the Doctor for a change" - which can be cool and has been done well… but poor writing and the forced inclusion of the Daleks hold it back from being anything other than just - meh. It is a big deal, as you say (even though it ISNT the Cybermen) but it's just handled so badly that it ends up being a total mess and a letdown to a mostly solid season.
It's definitely not the worst new-Who story but it's most certainly in the bottom 5 for me.
Also the "dramatic loss of Rose" as you put it was an utter joke. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
-
why don't you put your list of the bottom five and we'll see how many are my favorites?
ah, so you know what makes good scifi. Enlighten me. Point me to that post by the way. About RTD.

Remember, this is only for knew Who. 1 being the worst >
1. Love & Monsters
2. Voyage of the Damned
3. Doomsday
4. Last of the Time Lords
5. The Waters of MarsAll of them are totally below average and suffer from mostly poor writing and/or bad acting from the supporting cast. Last of the Time Lords is a bit controversial but it's possibly the biggest let down that the series has ever known. Utopia is utterly fantastic - an amazing example of what new-Who should be. The Sound of Drums is average but let down by Simm's Master - but the story still isnt bad…. until the payoff - which... makes no sense. At all.
Also that post about some aspects which RTD just outright did wrong was here
…choosing those as the outright worst of new-Who was definitely difficult.
These ones also deserve dishonourable mentions for being utter stinkers:- Aliens of London/World War III
- Tooth & Claw
- The Lazarus Experiment
- Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks
- The Doctor's Daughter
- The Unicorn & The Wasp
- The Beast Below
On a similar note, which stories would anyone else consider the most underrated of the lot?
I'd go for
- Boom Town
- The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
- 42
- Planet of the Dead
- Victory of the Daleks
-
okay, i like every single one of the ones you call the worst (great :D), i don't really enjoy any of the ones you nominated for dishonorable mention, and i do enjoy the ones you find underrated. how bout a list of your favorite new ones?
By the way, I read your post on Russell's writing, and I can't help but feel your voyage of the damned example is a bit of an isolated incident…as far as I've felt, you care about characters like that because the main characters care about them, and that hasn't really bothered me much. The biggest reason I LOVE Russell T. Davies' writing is that he brings elements and plot devices from other episodes and reuses them all the time; something extremely rare in the two scifi shows I grew up with and loved, Star Trek and Star Trek the Next generation.
-

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but I really really cant stand the ones I've listed and I think I've good reason for saying so.
of new who my favourite ones would have to be
(in no particular order)- The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
- Blink
- Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
- The Eleventh Hour
- The Time of the Angels
…I've honestly tried for that list to not be completely full of Moffat stories but they just come off so well. Exactly what makes Doctor Who so great. Some of them arent without their own set of problems but they don't detract from just how good the stories are.
Other honourable mentions would be
- Dalek
- Father's Day
- The Parting of the Ways (but not Bad Wolf)
- The Girl in the Fireplace
- The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
- The Stolen Earth (but not Turn Left or Journey's End)
- The Pandorica Opens (but not The Big Bang.... yet)
If I've mentioned only one half of a story its because I felt that one of the halves was particularly great but the other was lacking and didnt deliver.
By the way, I read your post on Russell's writing, and I can't help but feel your voyage of the damned example is a bit of an isolated incident…as far as I've felt, you care about characters like that because the main characters care about them, and that hasn't really bothered me much. We were talking about Voyage at the time so that was just an example. Saying that we should care because the main character cares is incredibly shallow. You should feel a lot more invested in whats going on than that.
Other stories that show it really well are:
- The Waters of Mars (possibly more than any other)
- Love & Monsters (to an extent)
- The Last of the Time Lords (if you follow the story from classic-Who, the emotional bits and back story make almost no sense)
- The Fires of Pompei (forced emotion all over the place)
There are many other reasons that his era wont be as fondly remembered as it could have been but for me, this is one of the worst reasons. He just simply forgets to tell us why we should care about the supporting characters. Simply saying that HE CARES SO WE SHOULD is just simply not good enough.
…and christ, you "Love" RTD because he reuses old plot devices? Pretty much every writer for Doctor Who has done that.
