I see many posts similar to this. People need to stop thinking of the crew as Pokemon. I don't think Luffy goes "I am missing an <x>" before he asks someone to Join.</x>

It would simply be odd for such important and cool story elements to exist but never be integrated into the main team of protagonists.

Wiper had a flashback. He was younger than 15 in it, and it was very short. It featured one panel of the elder Shandian telling Wiper to listen closely to the tale he was about to tell (which was of course Norland & Calgara).
He had crew material in that he was badass and a rebel leader. Then again so were Kouza, and Paulie somewhat.
The 3 days thing was viable before Kuma showed up and put the crew to their places.

True enough but it's not like he had much time for meaningful development what with his day being filled with fighting for his life. At the end there was a slither of promise when he was impressed by Luffy's determination despite his goal being different but that was never expanded on. As I said, he had some of the qualities not all of them.

Disagree. Wiper was two-dimensional at worst and that puts him leagues above characters who are solely used for gags and to further the plot. Perona, Camie, Margaret, Conis, all of them fall flat to him in terms of character structure and genuine conflict. An emotional and angry man with a deep mistrust of outsiders and a genuine love for his people, gradually being reformed by the heroic actions of said outsiders into a fuzzy bear fits into the general mythos of One Piece most excellently.
But yeah, lack of dream, motive, character development and flashback showed Oda was never going to use him.

Aimed at 10-year-olds? Bullshit. Obviously accommodating younger kids is a priority, but like any good pixar film, there is shit here for anyone regardless of age, and 10-year-olds aren't the sole focus. There have been interviews in which Oda has confirmed as much.
I mean come on, there are themes and subtleties here a 10-year-old couldn't hope to understand.
In regards to Oda being unpredictable, I think it's more him just breaking his own mold. He really highly structures certain aspects to the point where we build a mental house of cards with the elements that collapses if he removes even one piece.

That's called 14. And even if it is on a 14 year old reading level, people should still be able to handle it.
I realize that. I just feel there is a big difference between a 10-tear old and a 14 year old in stuff like this, not to mention that you can write a story so there are nuances aimed at a different, more mature, demographic. And a truly unpredictable story is probably a bad one anyways. Oda is good because he can take you by surprise, but when you look back things make sense, and could be predicted by people who looked hard enough or thought about it. An extremely unpredictable series would be pulling stupid dues exs everywhere and probably be extremely horrible

A lot of people predicted that. I'm included among them.
I say that we can predict what may happen, but not how. I for one was against the timeskip because I thought Luffy would never had the wisdom to stay on one place and train for years, instead of rushing towards his friends.
I couldn't predict that Shakky knew Hancock & co. and would predict that Hancock would fall in love with Luffy, nor that Rayleigh would suddenly cross the Calm Belt by swimming. Those were the catalysts that allowed the timeskip to happen. I doubt anyone who predicted the timeskip expected what happened in Chapter 591.
IMO, those who predicted the timeskip were paying attention on the story structure more than the main character's personality, and in the end they were right and I was wrong. The story was indeed moving towards Luffy needing to stop and become stronger before continuing his adventure. I couldn't foresee it because there was no way (in my mind) that Luffy would take that decision, and there was no one around him (which were Law, Hancock and Jimbei) that would suggest it to him or convince him to do it.
So, I say we can predict WHAT's going to happen in the story. We know that Luffy will win some fight or that someone may join or won't, but when we try to think too hard on HOW it will happen, we often fail.
Also, everyone fails on predictions as much as they get them right…

Yeah, Hancock was useless. She didn't help Luffy infiltrate Impel Down, nor did she save his ass from Smoker. And if I'm remembering it well, she wasn't able to reach him and keep him safe after the war as well.
She's too timid to reveal her feeling for him, but that doesn't forbid her from doing other stuff (plus, having someone other than Luffy to interact would be good to tone down her lovestruck antics…)
