Well…I'll be getting this game in about a week so I'll see if I agree with the reviews or not.
Final Fantasy XIII

FFXII is a poor example of a sandbox game. I don't know about you guys, but I prefer doing the sidequests over the story.
FFVI had excellent side quests. I mean, you got to visit brand new places that were actually interesting. It wasn't like…"Secret Cavern #3" or something. It was:
-Haunted Paintings Mansion
-Lava Cave
-Inside a Giant Worm
-Giant Tower of WTF Music am I listening to?
-A dream realm. And each of those, though unlock characters, are not required.
-
Not like the sentiment is had only in Japan.
I completely agree. Whenever I make a blatant racist or ignorant comment it's usually 30% mocking myself 20% intentional irony 40% butthurt and 10% intended humor.
Well…I'll be getting this game in about a week so I'll see if I agree with the reviews or not.
You're gonna play through the JP version!? That's hardcore. The best of luck to you!
-
Slightly off topic:

This isn't really so much related to XIII, but I thought it was a really good read nonetheless.
-
So…. I've heard theres no cities or towns whatsoever in this game... I'm fairly disappointed. :(
-
! There ARE cities and towns… they serve as dungeons during the early points though

…I always do. Most of my video games are Japanese. The only games I have trouble with are SRPGs because the kanji level is too high for me. I have around a 200-level (college-wise) education in Japanese so reading [most of] the text isn't too difficult for me.
So, a guy on GameFAQs has the game already. He said that he is still on the tutorial and is more than an hour into the game. Wow.
edit: here's a livestream:
Battle looks cool.
-
Good for you. I don't play any games that run the risk of discussing existentialism in Japanese. Well it's out and whatnot but I'll wait for the English version.
-
God, I'm having a super hard time getting excited for this
-
wow, didn't know that stream was live. It's cool watching long bits of gameplay.
Hmm… although what I watched was Spunky girl and Sahz trying to lure an unkillable monster away from a treasure.
And the BGM was good.... until the singing started...
I dunno...
-
:S
I'm not sure how to feel about the game now. When FFXII came out, the only major complaint was the battle system (which I loved before I even played it). With this game, though…here's someone's post from GameFAQs.
Straight-line dungeons (Who am I kidding? Straight line everything… or to be put differently, the entire game is a dungeon!), 1 town in 15 hours (That you visit for a good 5 mins.), endless fighting, no sidequests that are not fighting, limited growth system for the majority of the game, enemies with insane HP pools offer no more difficulty than others, just repetition (buff up, spam attacks, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat... enemy is now at half health and your break guage just reset.), optima shift animation repetition is fine for the first 30,000 times it happens, then you get more than 5 hours in and wish it'd stop, watching half the game be played and seeing no good villain emerge.
Eh…I'll see how it goes. As long as it is fun until the halfway point, I won't care as much (because then I won't quit halfway through).
-
You know what I was thinking while watching the livestream? "Is Mistwalker really going to make Lost Oddysey 2 or not?" Yeah… I hope the game is way more fun to play than to watch. :/
-
Pretty much one big dungeon? That's different. Might actually be for the better, you usually end up wasting a lot of time in towns just screwing around. That was super easy with FFXII cause you could talk to everybody… and there was a lot of everybodies.

But that's one of the hallmarks of RPGs, to go around town and talk to people about inane stuff. It allows them to further flesh out the world, and without a lot of stuff like that the game probably feels very empty.
-
I love towns. That's one of the things that made games like Xenogears or Star Ocean 2: the second story sooo great. (Personal Actions FTW).
It lets you see the characters in a different perspective, not in danger. Downtime and shopping… and if done right, getting to know one another. Sure, lots of character development can be had in a dungeon or on the battlefield, but it's a bit different.
Seeing townspeople, acting in daily, boring life... brings you down to a simpler reality. It reminds me... "Oh yeah... these characters in my party are having an AMAZING adventure"
Upgrading from merchants. Selling shit. Exploring.
And towns are really great when something out of the ordinary happens. A monster attacks and the party stands up. Someone disappears and must be saved. They meet A NEW PARTY MEMBER! A great twist when you least suspect it:
"ah, this town sure is peacefu...HOLY SHIT!! A GIANT WATER SERPANT!!!"
I love towns
-
What are the point of towns in FF13's situation anyway? spoilers afoot maybe, but just in case
To rest at an inn? HP refills after battle.
To shop? Can be done at save points.
To talk with NPCs and immerse yourself in the game world?! NPCs DO appear in the dungeonified towns, so you should still get a sense of the world
Take a breather from the story?
! Your party are wanted by the entire world and have markings that CLEARLY label them as threats. I doubt there'll be much downtime, much less mingling with a society that hates you. -
I wouldn't say the game HAS to have towns… I just like em'
If a game is good, then it's good. (good point about them being wanted. But there is ALWAYS someplace to have a breather)
And after a long dungeon crawl and boss battle (or two)... I like my downtime.
-
So I'll be getting this game Monday…
Wish there was a demo on PSN first. Does anyone know how long the story is supposed to be (hour-wise)? I hoping 50 hours but I'm guessing around 80.
-
1 million copies sold in Japan on its 1st day,
Nice.
-
According to official numbers, that's 25% of the PlayStation 3 userbase in Japan. Apply the same thing to the PS2 (which sold 21 mill in Japan), and that'd be 5 million+.
-
Anyone else think Versus 13 might end up being better than vanilla 13? Because the more I see of both, the more I start to think that Versus 13 should've just been 13, and regular 13 could've been thrown to the wayside.
-
yah know, I might be starting to agree with you. It seems the jpop in this one is bursting at the seams
-

Yeah, between J-Pop and ominous Latin chanting, I'd say the latter will always be better. Can't wait for V13.
-
Well, after watching the live stream. I am totally NOT impressed. It didn't show much, so the jury is still out on this one
… but even the coolness of Sahz didn't win me over. Vanille is just not my cup of tea. The BGM was good, until the singing started.
The song was bad.. but i just dislike BGM singing in most any RPG. Why? cause it'll eventually repeat... over and over...The battle system seems cool... but I need to see more.
From my perspective... the story in this one will do the heavy lifting.. cause the dungeoning just seemed bland
-
That was one thing I really liked about XII, the soundtrack was really pretty and fit it's setting perfectly. And no Jpop.

:S
Maybe I should avoid any and everything FFXIII related until I actually get the game.
Some complaints seem valid…but it's not like you can trust them on the actual scores since this happened:
-
Nothing to base the quality of the game off of, really. Dragon Quest IX also got this treatment from the vocal minority when it came out.
-
Yeah, between J-Pop and ominous Latin chanting, I'd say the latter will always be better. Can't wait for V13.
Plus, y'know, Yoko fucking Shimomura is doing V13's soundtrack. Fuck J-Pop, the female Uematsu's in the house.
-
If it's even half as good as Kingdom Hearts soundtrack I'm burnin' that shit to CD.
-
I'm starting to have second thoughts about purchasing this game. I probably won't have enough money by the time it comes out, since BC2 is also coming out around the same time, and this: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27133358&tag=topics;title

is it me or is this FF game not very good i mean like what the hell happen to shops why are shops in freaken save points seriously now that is stupid and retarded.
what happen to immerisian and buying shops from actual stores in the games like every other RPG/
also party leader dies its game over really why do Persona 3 it should be all party members dies then game over not just party leader i find it retarded.
was Square Enix really was smoking when making this game really.
FFXIII while it maybe successful i fear i will not be a part of its future.
-

I'm having a hard time understanding what the hell you're saying, but there was a valid storyline reason as to why this happened in P3 and P4, and there's probably something as well in FFXIII. It also adds a sense of priority, that one must look after the leader at all costs in order to stay alive, which can potentially make it more interesting in battle.
-
Is it as soon as your main character runs out of HP that the game over occurs? That would be frustrating, but it would be interesting to have it like the original Tactics where you have a very limited amount of time to revive them.
-
Party-leader dies it's Game Over? This game is getting worse every time! Guess they intend you to beef up all characters in case a story element takes your usual leader away.
-

Not really a major issue.
-
it was a major issue with me which is one of the reasons why i felt really sad and depressed when i brought Soul Calibur IV.
they had shops but didn't felt like shops with a employee there it felt like buying out of a menu.
i am not liking the shops in this game because its bringing me like what RE5 did and Soul Calibur IV did lifeless shops.
not stores where people greeted you and such and you buy stuffs.
-
Why are you comparing fighting games to RPGs?
-
your right your right i mean i cannot compare fighting games to RPGS your right sorry about that.
is it me or i am not like lighting as much as other people are in the playthroughs i am watching it seems like Lighting is very bitchy and like doesn't care about anything.
i know she does care for her sister and about her fate but i just don't like that she seems too bitchy.
i like Snow, Vanille, Sezh and hope all four of these characters to me feel much more human then lighting does.
and i don't know if lighting is a godmod? like ichigo is in bleach shrugs.
-
It may be pointless, but I pick "Greetings, stranga'!" over nothing.
-
Party-leader dies it's Game Over? This game is getting worse every time! Guess they intend you to beef up all characters in case a story element takes your usual leader away.
Yeah…except you can't level up or gain experience from fighting thus rendering that point moot. In other words, it is an artificial increase in difficulty.
-
… Why did they call this a Final Fantasy again?
-
… Why did they call this a Final Fantasy again?
Why wouldn't they? Seems Final Fantasy enough to me. I mean, Final Fantasy thrives on constantly changing aspects of its established formula.
And you do gain points that lead to the leveling up of the skill system and your equipment, so there's still a point to encounters.
-
^
Except they cap off in accordance to the story and the skills are the same.Regardless, I get this game in 9 hours.
-
One thing I like. Even though exploring map and battling monsters are separate game modes, transition between the two modes seems very fast. You enter and exit battles without much wait at all.

^Fucking this!
I HATE that in some FF games. Don't get me wrong, I'll most likely like the rest of the series in comparison, but I hated random encounters taking about 20 seconds to load up, and then 20 seconds to close.
I think this was one of the MANY reasons I liked Eternal Sonata.
-
The party leader dying = game over doesn't bother me.
Any time a FF introduces some new gimmick that seems like blasphemy, the flow of the game has been designed around that gimmick. That is to say, the game as it exists would probably be downright EASY if it were any other way.
However…
When they mesh these 'new' ideas together and continue to completely drop the old ones entirely, that's when they start to hit the soft spot.
-
^Fucking this!
Yeah, I pretty much made a somersault when I saw how it would be in this game.
I'm gonna bring up Lost Odyssey again but since it's the last JRPG I have played it's the closest reference point I have and it's very Final Fantasy like. I mean I liked that game and all and while when you look at a YouTube video of that game…
YCBCfHY6zhY
…it might not seem that bad at all but, man, after a while having to wait everytime at least that 15 seconds for a battle to start it began to slowly really get on my nerves. Perhaps I'm making it sound more bad then it really was, for the sake of argument, but still I would prefer games not doing that.

This post is deleted!
-
Party leader dying= Game Over. Nothing new. tri-Ace offered that to me a long time ago, and no probs there.
-
Ha.
The Megaten series has been doing that off and on since 1987.
y'alls a bunch of babies
