RE: Timeskip Predictions
Well, you ppl need to define what you mean by timeskip. I mean, its one thing to consider skipping a month, so the story and the heroes can get a breather after the war and rejoin, its another thing entirely to jump into the ZOMG ADULT STRAWHATS ZOMG!!! boat. One is possible the other is… well, starts with "r" and finishes with "tarded" - figure it out. I for one really don't want to see an aged pot-bellied Franky or a sagging Robin (nooo! that image made me cry...)
:)

RE: Timeskip Predictions
What brenen said is pretty much what I was thinking. ElectricField, I agree that is would kinda suck to have Luffy PK right now (we've seen he's nowhere near the uber-gramps likes of Akainu etc.), but that doesn't really have to happen. We are talking about the logical continuation of the story right now. But we are only about halfway through the manga. Anything can happen in the future - a long stay in one island, a longer timeskip, whatever. Its up to Oda and he could make anything happen/work. Right now a shorter timeskip (few weeks at least-few months at most) is the most logical for me.
-
RE: Timeskip Predictions
I think there will be a timeskip. But I don't see any point in making it longer than a month. A month allows for the story to progress, for chaos in the New World to spread, for the Strawhats to regroup, for Luffy to learn the basics of Haki, for other Strawhats to have some adventure of their own, gives Oda excuse to play a little with their character design, also gives him a reasonable enough period for them to have powered up a little.
A Month fulfils all conditions.
What would be the purpose of a longer timeskip? What will it benefit either the story or the characters or… anything really? Not to mention that if you make it a year or longer the whole "War" motive would lose its sharpness. The world as a whole would have probably forgotten that war and moved on to other concerns. Wouldn't that kinda defeat the purpose of the last two story arks? Yes, strawhats are not on yonkou level right now and that would mean that they will get crushed in a calm and established New World where every yonkou has their territory but the aftermath of the war gives them an opportunity to enter a more chaotic New World where they will have the chance to level up before fighting some of the more serious forces.
A month allows Oda to make any changes he needs to make and is what makes sense with regards to basic story progression.

RE: Chapter 554 "Admiral Akainu" Discussion
logias were cool the first couple of times, but its kinda meh right now for me. would have been cooler to see something more inventive - blood, roses, even freakin ketchup… just not another uber logia that is identical to a bunch of other fruits we've already seen.
Whitebeard is mostly fucked however strong he is as he has too few people. Even if his division leaders are equal to the admirals they are too few and that is without the Shichibukai. If it hadn't been for Blackbeard's betrayal Whitebeard would have three more admiral level fighters - Ace, Blackbeard and the guy he killed. Loosing those three cuts Whitebeard's strength almost in half and there is no chance he can win. Only way he can survive is if he is helped by a Yonkou (unlikely as we were told that Shanks is fighting the other Yonkou) or Dragon (I like that one as Dragon should feature in such a momentous event, but is strikes me he advances his goals through politics rather than brute fights). Luffy's group is tough but not enough even if they all go for Whitebeard.

RE: Shichibukai strength
The seven sins thingie is funny even if it has nothing to do with the manga itself. A quick note on Mihawk's - either Sloth (sleeping all the time) or Wrath (chase Krieg half the world). Why on earth would he be Envy? He has no one to be envious of - he is the absolute and undisputed best in the world in his field of interest (swordsmanship).
Also, on bounties - shouldn't bounties actually work backwards with shichibukai? Logically, the lower their bounty when they were offered the position, the more impressive they were to the WG. For example, it took Croc just 80 mil worth of crime to be considered worthy of the position, whereas Moria comitted 350 mil worth of crime before he was appointed. It's not foolproof logic, but it's solid enough to at least disprove rakning the Shichi based on bountie.
I actually think their location is a good rough guide (the split between old and new world shichi). New world shichi and stronger should be Blackbeard, Mihawk, Kuma, Jinbei (maybe), Doflamingo (maybe).
-
RE: Shichibukai strength
I completely agree. Oh and Croc isn't a fighter he's a power user. A fighter is someone who uses his own strength he was born with a power user is someone who uses their powers to fight. Using special powers just means Croc is pretty much a wuss without his DF powers.
That's waaaay weak. If that is so then Luffy has to be the greatest wuss in the whole series as he can't take a crap without using his powers. Luffy's body IS his power, just as Ener's is lightning.
-
RE: Shichibukai strength
Ppl, stop with the absolutes. There is no proof of anything.
The Yonkou are considered the strongest and most ambitious pirates in the world. Their strength measurement, however, is related to the difference between them and the rest of the pirates in the world. It in no way means that they are equal between themselves. So you really cannot in any way rank them as equals based on them having the same title. Whether a pirate is just 2x stronger than the rest or 5x stronger than the rest he may still be given the title "yonkou" by those he is 2 or 5 times stronger. There is no way to measure just how much stronger that "yonkou" is. Their position as "yonkou" is in no way evidence that they are equal.
At the same time these are the pirates with the ambition to be absolute, to be Pirate Kings. Why has no one achieved that? An obvious answer is that no one posesses the absolute strength. That is - if any one of them tryed to take the position he would be challenged by the others and will ultimatelly lose. Based on that you can argue two things - that no Yonkou is stronger than the other three yonkou combined (that is certain) and/or that no yonkou is strong enough to win consecutive battles with the other two or three yonkou. With the first you limit the maximum possible theoretical difference in strength there could be between the yonkou (one is 3x the others) and with the second you set the more logical distincion between them (that a battle between two yonkou crews will probably destroy both of them regardless of who wins, benefiting a third)
Basically, all that crap means that even if one is stronger than the rest, he is not sufficiently stronger to matter and a direct confrontation will probably be a suicide for any of them.

RE: Akainu/Sakazuki Discussion
So, about 10 chapters are a loooooooooooooong time for you? We've had Apoo with his strange music related DF, Hawkins with his voodoo/straw/hair DF, Kidd with magnetic powers, Law's strange room DF, the living fortress Capone and age changing Bonney, all of them are paramecias.
Yeah, right. Because showing up for 5 chapters just to be destroyed by the logia Kizaru is really meaningful. In the past 400 chapters ALL main enemies have been either logia or zoan. Perhaps Moria could be considered an exception but his powers worked like a logia so it doesn't really matter. Who's the last IMPORTANT character who didn't have a devil fruit or was paramecia?
-
RE: Akainu/Sakazuki Discussion
I really dislike the idea of him being yet another logia. They are really getting annoying, as there are already too many of them. I want to see something different that breaks the mold at least a little bit - blood, ruby, flower, curry, mosquito, anything that is not logia. In the last several hundred chapters we've had only logias and zoans, which are the most straightforward and repetative fruits. Paramecia can be much more fun to read asbout and we haven't really had one for a looooooooooooong time.

RE: Chapter 520 "Gorgon's Eyes" Discussion
Big thumbs up to Croy for a few very good posts in this thread. I fully agree, but in one regard - I don't think its connected to the nobles, but rather to either Doflamingo or Jinbei. I'm leaning towards Jinbei (60% to 40%) for a variety of reasons, but you can't really tell who it's gonna be between the two. There are a lot of possible "villains" and even "heroes" and we'll have to wait and see who Oda chooses for what role (Jinbei could easily turn out to be a hero protecting the discriminated fish people or a racist, whose example was followed by Arlong).
-
RE: Shichibukai strength
Just a quick note with regards to Mihawk's strength - it's universally agreed that the shichibukai are more or less equal in overall power. However that does not mean that they are equal in individual power. So far all shichibukai we've seen have had very strong crews (Baroque Works, Zombies, Kuja pirates) with two notable exceptions - Mihawk and Kuma who are completely alone. Going from the asumption that all shichibukai have equal overall power, that directly means that the individual strength of either Mihawk or Kuma is a match for the power of the other shichibukais with their whole crews. Whereas you could rise some questions with regards to Kuma, who may have other things to make him useful besides simple power (teleportation is a very handy thing and then there are the kumabots), Mihawk to our knowledge is simply a fighter, he doesn't serve any other purpose but to fight.
Therefore, I think logic proves without any doubt that Mihawk is by far the strongest shichibukai (possible exceptions are Kuma who is also alone and Jinbei who we know nothing about) as long as we hold true that there is no big discrepancy in the overall power of the shichibukai.EDIT bah, forgot Doflamingo. He makes no difference, however, since we know little to nothing practical about him as well…

RE: Shichibukai strength
ever since the demise of HxH OP's been my fav shonen and I've always wanted to see an OP based vs thread or even "budokai" like the nexgear forums had with great success for HxH. The reason, however, that this can never happen and that vs thread are forbidden here is that it could never work. HxH was governed by universal rules that governed every power and fighter so that all of them had a level playing ground and their powers were detaily explained and based on logic. That allowed detailed and civilized discussion based on facts and logic that could be easily prooved. This can nevr happen in OP because the powers in OP are not logical, but magic. There is very little known on how they work, why they work, how they interact… all things that are necessary in order for them to be compared. Since these things are missing power in OP cannot really be compared making any such attempts simple trolling regardless of what position you defend.
-
RE: Shichibukai strength
A quick note with regards to what is said in the manga and what is not. While it's a good idea to always go with the manga you can also take it to the extreme. Say with the whole Mihawk thing - he was said to be the strongest swordsman in the world, so by definition anyone else that uses a sword is either weaker or at best equal. At the same time it is not directly stated that he can use Haki or something similar so some people are saying that he cannot and is therefore weak. That is flawed for a simple fact - whether he can or cannot use Haki, he is still the strongest. If he can't use haki then he can use something else or is too godly to need to use anything at all. Either way it doesn't matter as he is stated to be the strongest and that is that. As a simple further example - the manga also doesn't say that Nami isn't a man or that Luffy and Zoro aren't lovers or that Oda isn't actually a panda. Does the lack of verbatim denial make any of those any more plausible? Use logic ppl.

the whole Vivi fracas is rather unsightly (read retarded) coming after an interesting chapter with a lot of nice stuff to talk about….

RE: Location Speculation
Zoro - having a samurai ark seems appropriate and probable so I also go with Wano. Bounty hunter/Outlaw island would also be cool.
Sanji - gay men's island. landing in the bedroom of the Okama Queen's palace of pleasure.
Usop - Gulliver inspired island of little ppl
Franky - scrap metal island where he meets a mad scientist(TM)
Nami - Testosteron land. Island of only straight men.
Robin - carnival island
Chopper - zoo land(er)
Brook - Victorian islandI'm kinda "meh" with regards to all outside the monster trio but some of these sound cool to me :)

RE: Chapter 514 "Only Mushrooms are Sprouting from his Body" Discussion
hmmm, kinda dissapointing. after that build up anything involving the SHs was bound to be a little dissapointing so i was hoping we would stay with the marines or go to whitebeard. still, its a decent enough chapter, I just think that it was too soon for comedy after the drama of the previous chapters. it WAS funny though, do I see Luffy and Sweetpea doujinshis coming? :D

RE: Volume 52 Discussion Thread
Title: "Island of Carnage" or "Defeat"
Chapters: 503-513
Color: Dark violet, red and black
Cover: I'd like a huge Kuma with the strawhats running away from him. But I think we'll certainly have Kizaru on the cover as well as Oda seems to have put some emotion in his character's looks. -
RE: Do you think the goverment has/will consider Luffy for a role of Shichibukia?
Luffy alone hasn't beaten anyone. The SH pirates beat two shichibukai. Luffy alone is nowhere near strong enough to be a Mihawk or a Kuma. Not to mention that as a character he is pretty much useless to a structured organization like the marines that is about duty, ranks and orders.
-
RE: Shichibukai strength
yoruba, the act itself was trully contrary to Luffy's character but one act doesn't make a person. Their characters seem very similar so it's unreasonable to claim they are oposites just because of that one act.

RE: Crocodile and Moria Respect Thread
man…u gotta know when to stop and when you've lost. that's a few posts back if you want to know.
btw what's with that:
However, that doesn't say anything about the DF itself releasing itself from it's owner to take over Alabasta and absorb it's life and resources.
? (sounds kinda retarded, but maybe I just don't understand what you mean…?)

RE: If Luffy was a Marine What Rank Would He Be?
Luffy and Zoro - Rear Admirals (Supernovas seem to be roughly at the same level, I don't think they are greater than Drake)
Sanji - Captain
Rest - meh, doesn't really matter. -
RE: Crocodile and Moria Respect Thread
kinda redundant given that the big Shichibukai topic is next to it. But yeah, Croc was a bad mojo you really don't want to mess with. Much more so than Moria, who I don't really rate that much.

RE: Shichibukai strength
which is the part where Shanks specifically says that he didn't ;)

RE: Gol D. Roger = Gomu Gomu fruit user?
No, Roger is not undead. No, Roger is not made of rubber. Duh.
-
RE: Shichibukai strength
Antithesis? Not really. He is in fact the closest to Luffy we've seen so far. If we were looking for an anthithesis that would have to be Doflamingo and his new age stuff, which is the oposite of what Luffy believes in. I really think that the series villain will be the one to off Shanks and it could well be BB but its far from certain.
-
RE: Shichibukai strength
pointless really. there is no absolute power and fights in OP are much closer to HxH than to DB. The best doesn't always win, depends on the nature of the powers, the condition of the fighters, the circumstances…Interestingly though, this seems to break down at the top level of fighters in the OP universe, where DF really aren't absolute and personal power is much more so. Therefore on the highest level of OP the rankings must be much clearer than in the mid tier as DF have much less influence.
We've seen for a fact that DF can be nullified so they don't really matter that much on the top. Ergo the strongest fighters are those who don't depend on DF powers. Who have seen that is like that so far? Mihawk and BB for sure (BB's power is the stopping of opponent's power) and WB and Shanks probably. It follows that these are the strongest people we've seen so far. That also should answer where is Mihawk on the ladder of strength - on the top or very near. Much more so than the Morias or Kumas of the world. Doflamingo is a big question with his psichic/mind control/whateva power, we don't really know.
-
RE: Chapter 512 "No Contact From Zoro" Discussion
I've been thinking something - who is Zoro's goal? Who is the person that Zoro in a sence wants to be? Mihawk. And Mihawk is constantly shown to be completly alone wandering around in a tiny boat. He doesn't have a crew or friends that tag along to help him, he's alone against anyone who gets in his way. Maybe we are seeing an oportunity for Zoro to mirror that, to go the same way. It certainly seems the best way for him to level up, more or less behind the scenes. We continue to follow the SH crew, but from time to time we get a chapter or two of Zoro fighting this guy or that guy becoming an ever greater fighter and an ever greater name. This way he is both out of the crew and alone (a la Mihawk) and inside the manga through his fights (a la Ace vs BB or Shanks vs WB). Seems it would be an interesting development, but it would leave the crew quite weak and they are already weaker than the dangers they will be facing in the future.

RE: Zoro's breath techniques
Vanesssa, i think that you are streching Zorro's words a bit. The whole diamond thing was a joke, not some deep philosophical line. And I think that everyone is theorizing a bit too much without any evidence. Some of the things ppl propose seem logical and interesting, but fact is we have no evidence as Oda says nothing in the manga. Maybe he said sf in a sbs or an interview, but the manga is totally silent on "breath". It got two line mention in the last 400 chapters, i'd say that is dropping it from Oda.
-
RE: Chapter 511 "Sentoumaru and his Broadaxe" Discussion
elric, while there is indeed foreshadowing that he may be a final opponent (maybe even THE final opponent) that doesn't meen he would automatically own everyone else. We know that he can negate df powers and that he is very strong hand to hand fighter, but we don't really have enough specifics to be certain of his status. We've seen Garp do mush more impressive feats of strength than BB for example.
-
RE: Chapter 511 "Sentoumaru and his Broadaxe" Discussion
He is top level in each category essentially, while remaining susceptible to defeat by our Protagonists.
yep, exactly. After all, who is the first guy that pops up in your head when mentioning hand-to-hand?
"hint"Luffy"hint" -
RE: Chapter 511 "Sentoumaru and his Broadaxe" Discussion
I don't actually think BB is quite as uber as ppl think he is. Yeah, he can nullify any df power, but we've already seen that none of the top fighters depend solely on df power. Basically BB has to fight hand to hand with everyone and we've seen that on the highest level personal power is even more important than having a logia. Actually, i think we are about to see just how important fruit powers are - Kizaru vs Rayleigh could answer a lot of questions in this regard.
-
RE: Chapter 511 "Sentoumaru and his Broadaxe" Discussion
oh, well. lets all just make love not war. oh, wait…yuck! that saying doesn't really work between guys, now does it...:)
Anyway, we are all free to post our opinions, whether others agree with them or not. It's just that once the discussion moves away from facts and goes into flaming it doesn't really matter who started it, just that no one stoped it and then both parties are equaly at fault. Oh, well...fact is I also used some strong words and that wasn't right. Let's just read the manga and have fun, ne? :)
-
RE: Zoro's breath techniques
perhaps so, but the problem with that is that we haven't seen any development of the whole "breath" line. He's been getting faster, stronger, tougher, he's got new techniques, but the "breath" thing hasn't even been mentioned since Alabastra so I think that Oda perhaps dropped it.
-
RE: Zoro's breath techniques
yep, I think so too. I even expected that to happen vs Enel but it wasn't to be. I think the problem is that Oda made the whole breath thing too powerful and too absolute. I mean he should be able to cut through literally anything, it doesn't matter if its gum, steel, diamond or logia and every time do it the same way as the last time, which would make the fights repetative and predictive. So that is why Oda has largely dropped it ever since Alabastra. Even in the Enies Lobby fight he made up a gimmick to make it useless and instead gave Zoro a new technique that was never explained.
Theoretically, Zoro doesn't even need to differentiate between a person and their ability - should be able to cut lightning or light just as easily as he can cut steel or paper, that was the whole point of his big revelation and the flashback with his master during the fight. -
RE: Chapter 511 "Sentoumaru and his Broadaxe" Discussion
brennen, that's true, but I found his tone to be much more offensive and intentionally so than the other guy was. Might be just me though, who knows :)
-
RE: Chapter 511 "Sentoumaru and his Broadaxe" Discussion
wow, just how childish do you have to be to write a post like that? greg, i mean. OK, you have an idea and you shared it, so what if someone doesn't like or agree with it? Dude, you sound like a whiny childish prick, get on with life. You are not the only one who's been reading OP for a long time, you are not the only one who has guessed right before, you're just another fan like all of us. Get a grip on coz you are embarrasing yourself.
So as not to be completly off topic - the thory is possible but not plausible for me. It's just kinda lame I think, but then I also thought so about Kizaru's fruit and it ended up being what everyone expected it would be so you never know…
-
RE: Enel vs Kizaru
how exactly is a vs thread any different from 90% of the other threads in the forum? You give your opinion, you discuss stuff, you argue…the same as with any other topic. if the rules forbid it then a mod will lock it and that's that, but don't be posting bullshit about arguments and evidence, it's either hypocrisy or stupidity.
-
RE: Chapter 510 "Straw Hat Crew vs. Combat Weapon" Discussion
Can't believe that some ppl are claiming Zoro is growing hands…must be the most ridiculous thing i've heard. Especially since it's stated by Oda that he isn't and since there is neither a logic, nor a way for him to do it. And is he also growing swords? Sheeesh, some ppl really need to start thinking...
-
RE: Chapter 510 "Straw Hat Crew vs. Combat Weapon" Discussion
need translation…curious what's up with Zorro, seemed to have some health problem and Sanji looked to be thinking something about him. Also I hope Hawkins is not dead, seemed like interesting character and would love to see more of him later in the series.

RE: Kizaru's devil fruit?
hehe, why apologise for bringing something different to the discussion? Don't know if such depth of analisys is really necessary, but it certainly doesn't hurt and offers something extra. As I said - cudos for the time and effort :)
