RE: Do you show enough love?
ugh fuck sorry i thought i double posted so i deleted the post
here's the post

Gone to shit?
Holy and I both legitimately lost a parent at a young age. That's typically something that fucks a person up- your relationship with the surviving parent (and other immediate family members) can become weird and strained and your ability to trust and bond with people becomes really complicated when you know that they could die and there's nothing you can do about it. Regardless of whether you had an ideal or even just serviceable family life before, your entire place in a safe and caring world is immediately and irrevocably compromised. You don't see things the same way other people do and you never really will. Relationships with others, including loving them and how you express that love, is all a part of it.
I know I don't post here much anymore, but Holy and I are close friends and we've talked before about similarities in our experiences and outlooks. I know personally that I loved my dad very much and that now (and for quite some time) he's just been a rotting corpse in the ground. I have to deal with that every day and with the fact that that could happen to anyone else I love and that complicates loving people for me. Really, I've known since I was in middle school that it's either me or someone I cherish who is the next to be reduced to an unthinking pile of meat.
I thought Holy's post was hysterical and "dead parent high five" was my way of expressing solidarity. When bad stuff happens to you as a kid you can develop weird resentments and (especially as you grow older) face really difficult truths about what could have been, like what your parents (who are responsible for you and themselves at that age) could have or should have done.
I could have made a post saying "i love people a lot and try to let them know by my actions" or "i do love but i'm bad at expressing it sometimes" or something but I preferred a joke instead because I thought that was boring
my dead parent my dead rules i make all the shitty morbid jokes i want
edit:
True story when my dad died and was buried it was in a double plot so mom could be buried next to him when she died. One day when I was like 15 (i'm 21 now) we were at the graveyard where he's buried. I fucking hate going there most of the time- I usually wander away to look at old graves and stuff because I don't like looking at it or dealing with it. But we were both there that day and I walked over to mom's plot and literally started dancing on her grave. We both started laughing. That is how I express love

and haha idk i guess if you haven't had that kind of joking insult relationship it's hard to see from the outside

RE: Best fragrance to wear at your computer
I like the smell of coconut. I also like how watermelon smells but it seems like too much of a little kid scent to use :( I like vanilla but it's so… vanilla.
I need to experiment more with scents, especially in my shampoo. My problem, though, is that I have a very sensitive scalp (I have psoriasis- that may be part of the problem) and thick hair that gets frizzy easily
so I need a shampoo/conditioner combination that tames my hair but doesn't irritate my scalp. that can be hard to find.

RE: Family Guy: Isn't abuse funny?
doc hammer on family guy
One of the things that does stand out about the show is that it doesn’t seem that cultural references are thrown in with any sort of disingenuousness and that it happens in a very organic way.
Doc Hammer: That’s because we’re not working them in, we’re just throwing in these little… wubbies, these things that feel good to us. There are a lot of ways for jokes to pay off, and I hate to get mathy on this crap, but you can use these references the way you and your friends use these references. I made a mention of “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” by... who were they? Pocket Full of Kryptonite? Two Princes? Spin Doctors. I made a Spin Doctors reference. Someone asked me if I liked the Spin Doctors, that really doesn’t matter. It says a lot, it puts people in the place. If someone brings up that song, “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong”, you’re getting the power of their personal nostalgia, you’re getting a sense of their love for the song. To put out a reference that we all understand is really kind of a powerful thing to do. **Which is why I hate stuff like Family Guy, it will just toss this crap out at you in this pandering, make you feel good way. ‘I’m smart too, I know who Gary Coleman is,’ and that’s kind of the way Family Guy uses it. They just toss out this name so everybody can immediately feel the power of, one, knowing the reference, and two what that reference implies. But it’s not worked into the plot and it has no potential meaning, it’s just this ugly list; and if you didn’t get it the first time shows like Family Guy will actually show you how the reference is used in a flashback, that has no value, of the time Peter and Gary Coleman got in a fistfight.
It does try a little too hard to smack you in the face with it. Too much of a
wink and a nod.DH: And it works, the show is very successful. This is an effective comedy device, clearly. I find it to be slightly ugly.**
It’s a little heavy handed.DH: And heavy handed things work, they work beautifully.
haha man I cringe when family guy is on the TV. i just find it absolutely repulsive and such a huge waste of time for those who stop to watch it.

RE: Departure to the sea of New World
your art is fantastic, sea
and i think you can interpret "heroic" however you want to. it's your art and your expression.
-
RE: Fanarts by Strangeykins
@Sea:
You have rich designs.
Do you pursuit art as a career or just enjoying it as a hobby?ah, thank you very much! most of it is fanart though, so I can only take credit for my interpretation :)
I'm just enjoying it as a hobby, really. I want to be a film editor so unless I end up storyboarding too it won't come in handy much. I've always wanted to do some kind of amateur comic, though, but I've never really found the time or the energy for it haha

RE: What is your race and do you suffer the guilt of the pale face
Yes, I am white and i suffer goverment mindfuck*.
fuckign terrible
@Uncle:
I know this is going to sound out of nowhere but do you live in Louisiana? Because I swear to God that everything you described here sounds JUST like my Intro to Sociology class as well. Everything I've quoted is exactly the same.
There was even this truly awkward day where she was describing the differences in privledges amongst race and gender and started "apologizing" to black people and women and etcetera since they weren't going to make as much as their white counterparts.
If you aren't attending the same class as me then I'll be fucking shocked out my mind because of the amount of coincidences here.
Haha, nah. I go to a small school in Georgia and she taught in Mississippi before moving here.
Something cool (I guess?) though is how she rants about how fucking awfully racist Louisiana and Mississippi are compared to here. Like much more overtly racist and more separated in a lot of ways. Like at my college there are a lot of interracial couples and people of various races HANGIN OUT and it's weird to her because she didn't see that where she used to live.
She's sweet and well-meaning, but an example of her being way too timid is when we looked at a bunch of old offensive ads. One had a black man as a servant with this animalistic expression on his face serving a white guy a drink or something. All she had to say was "the way he was painted, he looks like some kind of ape or monkey, which reinforces a lot of oppressive ideas and attitudes" or something like that. It wouldn't have meant she thought black people looked like animals or some shit, and everyone in the class would have known that and known what she meant.
But instead she was kind of weird and halty and "He, well, it's so awful! He looks like a, well, y-, you know, I don't want to say it, like a…" and was confusing instead of straightforward. I got the feeling she thought the black kids in class would be shocked or offended or something which is idiotic in that it gives them no credit. She's just generally way better at talking about gender issues than race ones, which is a shame.
-
RE: What is your race and do you suffer the guilt of the pale face
However, it's often not about the severity of a word itself, but the severity of how someone uses it. If it's painfully obvious a person is disrespecting you because of your race… it's offensive... even if they only call me "white", or someone else "black". It's all about the user's attitude.
It's both.
both are hateful and both are bad, but, uh, I was never considered 3/5 a person
so it… it's not really the same on the inherent severity scale or whatever. how someone uses is matters, too, of course. but a black person using a slur against a white person doesn't have the same pain and weight. in some ways society still treats white people as "more than" and black people as "less than", and calling someone who isn't white a slur has that backing it up in severity.
@CCC:
The professor should have failed that motherfucker right there and then. But I've known idiots like that too… wish I hadn't, but I have...
"Everyone's a little bit racist" is bullshit, so I'm not trying to draw on that and I'm not talking about myself, but with that girl and a couple other people in the class you get that
saying what everyone else is thinkingkind of vibe, and they seem proud of it, but all they do is embarrass me and make me angry roflalso it's worth mentioning the class is probably half black and half white with a goofy, nervous, and flaky female white professor who is a good person but is too anxious about discussing race issues
btw as I see it white guilt is less about you yourself being an active hateful racist and more about what your ancestors did and what people like you in power continue to do that gives you advantages others don't have.
so no, i do not feel bad about slavery (i'm southern white, but i come from sicilian people, irish people, and poor white farmers who never owned slaves), but it does kind of suck that I with my "eloquent" speech patterns and irish first name and non-foreign last name am not going to be discriminated against in a lot of instances or have my race blamed for my fuckups or get that condescending "credit to your race" bullshit or not be able to see white people represented in classes or in the media or blah blah blah blah
it's not my fault but it's still fucked up
also I'm surprised gender hasn't come up
whitey or white girl or snow white don't really bother me but "cunt" sure as hell does
-
RE: What is your race and do you suffer the guilt of the pale face
why do white people care so much about what black people do amongst themselves? all it does is show how stupid and entitled and privileged you are when you seriously can't comprehend why a black person may not find it okay if you use a word that carries with it hundreds of years of violence, hate, and oppression
as far as black people using it, I think this is an interestuing video-
fEVmAbxC14g
I actually don't have sound here but I think this is the right video %)
but, fuck, you know what? it's none of my business, and it's not my issue. i'm white. I grew up in a majority black area and got picked on every so often for being white, but if you stop to fucking think about it, cracker, whitey, honkey, etc don't hold any real weight. you know why? because white people are fucking privileged and have been for ages and you have no idea how fucking lucky you are if the only thing you have to worry about is you not being allowed to use a hateful slur against a person of color.
I actually got pissed off in intro to sociology today when someone basically started that WHY ISN'T THERE A WHITE HISTORY MONTH?? garbage.
privilege is not the end-all be-all of life (white men are something like eleven times more likely to kill themselves than black women, which is something holy and i were talking about that I think she mentioned) but it's a big thing that a lot of people overlook
and fuck I have to go now but i'll talk more about this later
