Does anyone else feel like Bartolomeo's warning panel is Oda's subtle retcon to show that scary people don't always look like their silhouettes?

No it wasn't . If anything the arc should have been extended more and provided some breathing time in between the large events and what not .

I agree. I think the layout of the Dressrosa contributed to the feeling of the story staying in one place for too long. Every major feature of the island was always in sight, unlike Alabasta/Skypeia/Water 7 + Ennies Lobby. I would have enjoyed more distinct locations, with "breathing room" between each. Then, seeing the distances covered in the final fight would have had more impact.
