RE: Has Oda lost his touch?
@Ao:
So Japanese fans lump Arlong in with the rest of the earlier stories which were pretty disapointing?! Blasphemy!
Disappointing? No… not at all. Just because we rank them at third does not mean we don't like it. Pre-Grandline was good, and the story got better as it proceeded from Gunkan-zima to Arlong Park, but I think many agrees that Alabasta and Skypiea topped that.
-
RE: Has Oda lost his touch?
All right! We have a chance to interact with our Japanese members and guests – I think it's always interesting to hear the Japanese P.O.V. of OP and of AP (and especially after the controversy raised in a recent thread, but we won't bring that here, since it's already resolved).
Hmm, interesting -- and a good possibility. Many of us AP folk didn't discover One Piece until we were in high school, or in college, or (in my case at least) about to move into the second half of our post-school careers. So I wonder if this has had an effect on our feelings towards the story too: that because we were generally older when we first began reading the story, we don't associate it so strongly with our childhoods, and with a time that most people are eager to move out of. This may be why our enthusiasm hasn't waned as much over the years.
It could also be because we've had less exposure to OP than Japanese fans have. We didn't grow up with it as the omnipresent background of our childhoods. This may mean we don't associate it with that time as strongly as you do.
Regardless, I like how your group has considered more than one possibility for your current dissatisfaction before reaching a conclusion -- it's a rare trait that we don't often see on these boards (but I didn't have to point that out, did I? The evidence is all over this thread).
But about your question:
My guess is that most fans think highly of the arc that they "fell into" the deepest -- and that they'll use that arc as a standard for measuring all others. So if Alabasta was the arc that kept you and your friends up all night pondering the possibilities and marveling over the careful plotting, then this would be the standard in which you compare all other arcs. Does that make any sense?
For me, it's Jaya. I enjoyed each of the arcs up until then, but Jaya is what "converted me" from a casual reader to an OP fan. I think this is because I have always been more interested in exploring Oda's world than in conquering it. So it seems natural to me I'd fall most deeply for a transitional arc in which the biggest fights are the fights not fought, and where there are opportunities to explore shipwrecks in the ocean, critters in the jungle, and islands in the sky.
I'll be honest, the last two arcs (Thriller Bark and Enies Lobby) haven't been my favorite, but (just like you) I've been enjoying them in spite of a slight feeling of disappointment. The story-lines were impressive, but I felt that in some parts, the tragedy was amped up so high that it felt like a parody of tragedy – and elicited the wrong response from me (For example, I think it was enough that Robin's mother died and that Ohara was destroyed -- that would have made many of us as unhappy as poor Robin was then --but did we also need a wicked stepmother, neighborhood bullies, nothing but table scraps to eat and chores to do? To me those things pushed Robin's past away from honest "tragedy" into slightly campy "fairy tale" ...).
However, one thing Oda's shown us many times is that there are peaks for every valley, and that if you're patient, he'll eventually create something that will win you back again. And that was the case with the events that happened shortly after.
I agree, the pace has felt somewhat "off" in Thriller Bark. Too fast in some parts, too slow in others. But on the whole, it's still an enjoyable and entertaining arc. So -- like you and your friends -- I'm not about to abandon this story yet, or any time in the future. I have faith in Oda's ability to walk the tight wire. He's been doing it well for ten years now.
One of my first posts on this board was about this very thing, but I can't seem to find it, so I'll have to repeat myself here: we read stories with certain expectations in mind -- certain plot and character developments that we want to see happen no matter what. If these expectations are not met, we become upset. Yet at the same time, we seek novelty -- so if there aren't enough unpredictable elements in a story as well, then we become bored and upset too.
Any story, when reduced to its barest frame, follows one of maybe six or seven possible plots – so it's not the plot that's different, it's the way the plot unfolds (the way the author deliberately decides what to reveal and when, and how much novelty to add along the way) So OP is essentially following the Shonen formula : arrive ... explore ... get into a jam ... kick booty ... move on -- and that's why we read it: anticipating the next island and the next fight, expecting at least one Mugiwara to win a battle, but hopefully all of them eventually. The novelty of OP is largely in the details: in the variety, richness and texture of each new land and each new situation. That's what distinguishes it from so many other manga which have the same essential plot.
Yes, but to be fair, it may take us a few more arcs to realize what was overlapping in the later arcs. For instance, we didn't know until Alabasta about many things hinted in East Blue. So we may not know the true significance of Water Seven until after the Fishman Arc, etc. We have to give the story more time before we can make a comparison like this.
But there are also times in real life when goals blind-side you with their suddenness. For instance, I contemplated purchasing a home -- a few days later, my landlord decided to sell the place immediately. I had exactly thirty days to either realize my dream, or else find myself and my belongings out on the curbside! Luckily, that story had a happy ending.
Wow…. thanks for that long respond. I think you nailed the point. Everyone has their "best" ark and they standarize and compare other ones with the favorite one. And for me..., it was the Arabasta...
btw..., epi 1 was the story that hooked me in to the OP.
And if you have any question about how most japanese ppl think, or even need any translation help, just PM me.
-
RE: Has Oda lost his touch?
so, my end belief is that OP is "better than average, good, but not great".
Even so, I believe, in Japan, it's the number one selling manga. When the shipment for new book arrives, it generally sells out within first few hours in big stores.
-
RE: Has Oda lost his touch?
Thanks for great response, guys. I just wanted to see comments from the fans in English speaking community.
Just to clear things up.@Laffitte:
No, he hasn't lost his touch, you just can't realize how to appreciate One Piece. And if you think he has? Quit reading it, simple.
No, I DO NOT hate Oda or ONE PIECE. I still appreciate the work he has been putting for past 10 years now, I still want to read the mysteries and adventure we have yet to see.@Ao:
Also I noticed, the Japanese tend to see Alabastar as their favorite OP arc of all time while the Americans seem to prefer Arlong..
A lot of Japanese ppl rate OP in following ways: Arabasta > Skypiea/Jaya > Arlong & pre-grandline > DBF. I intentionally left out the w7/EL as lot of ppl are still figuring where to fit it.
I think a lot of ppl here misunderstood me, so let me try to explain it again. In the all arks, story follows simple pattern: 1) The mugiwara pirates arrives to a new place, 2) discovers few new things, 3) identify the major enemy, and then 4) beat the crap out of the enemies.
But the unique thing about Arabasta Ark is the time span between event 3 and event 4. Notice, Luffy knew that he had to defeat Croko at the whiskey Peak at book 11. But these two did not meet until book 19 and it took another three books just to defeat Kroco. Why did Oda left a huge span?
Well…. he used this span to introduce the grand line, to relate themes from the past and future (overlaps between arks), and to build the tension between the crew and Kroko. A lot people thought Ussop's Goldfish story was weird and funny, but I do not think any of us actually expected that it was actually going to show up in the story. Two out of three things that Dragon said at Logue town, (will that passes on, events of the time) also comes up in this time span. Nami becomes sick, and Luffy had to recruit Chopa. Ginats and Blackbeard/Ace becomes extremely important after the Arabasta Ark. Do you see how the mini stories are overlapped between arks. I think the overlaps makes the story realistic and enjoyable and that has been missing in current arks except the two giants at the EL and the lapan (the giant whale)'s story at thriller bark. I think what I am trying to get is that there are far more overlaps in Arabasta Ark, than any other arks. This is why I said that the ark was complex.
Also, the "long" time span was more realistic. In real life, when anyone has a goal, he or she must face several challenges before reaching to the the final challenge. It takes time. But in recent ark, the time span is very short.
I just may be one of those guys that who think Arabasta is the peak of the story. But remember there are ppl who think, pre-grandline is the peak.

Has Oda lost his touch?
Note: Before you read this, I must inform that I read all episodes in Japanese, so I do not know the official English spellings, and I may make grammatical errors, as English is not my first language.
I been talking with my other Japanese friends and we all seem to agree to the fact that Arabasta Ark was the peak of ONE PIECE and Oda has not been as good as he has been since then. We feel that certain elements, such as complexity, dept, and entrainment of stories is lacking in the current stories. Though, Skypiea is comparable to the Arabasta Ark, but still not as good. Some claim that this is because we were middle schoolers during the Arabasta Ark, and now that we are college students, we don’t get as excited as we used to do with the current stories. Don't get this in wrong way, we all have been One Piece fans since episode one and we all still rate ONE PIECE as number one manga.
What does this all gibberish mean? Well, if we look at the Arabasta ark closely, we have the main story of BW and Croko trying to take over the Arabasta (for Pluton of course). The whole story starts when Luffy and co. meet the Giant Whale and Miss Wed (Princess Bibi) at the Futagotou. From this point to end of the Arabasta Ark, there are several “unrelated” but important topic/themes covered and at the same times the Mugiwara Pirates were able to travel to several different islands; thus the word complexity and dept. These include the whale, the two Giants at the Little Garden, the Goldfish (Ussop’s earlier story), Choopa’s story at the Drum Island, Black beard/Ace, and finally Pluton/Ponegraph.
We also believe entertainment (comedy) aspects used to be very balanced as they were added when necessary but not to the point were flow of the story was destroyed. Now it seems like Oda is rushing through the story a little and there are some “moments” of nice stories but the comedy became the main part of the story.

If anyone still had the raw file, can you upload it again? And yes, I need the RAW file, not the scanlation, as Japanese is my first language. Thanks in advance.

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
@EvilGamerX:
I think the next few eps are gonna be simple bullshit. Time to fill crap. All the new shit we are seeing in these flashback eps will be in one episode in a month or so. Along with things missed like Franky burning Pluton. They may just be doing this and saving budget for something else. It would have been nicer if they reanimated everything rather than having the bars on the side.
Because of the time change, there will be new audiece; therefore they are doing the flash backs. It probably will last 4 epi.

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
Well from the way he worded it, it sounds like it would be unlikely that the show will get cancelled alltogether, but.. since there is a chance, more info please?
Right now all the info I can provide is what I alreday wrote in the last post. At least, for now the show is still running and HOPEFULLY will not be cancelled anytime soon.
Look, this is a cultural thing. You kind of have to live in Japan to understand this. Ten to fifteen years ago, when I was still a kid, most of the popular anime used to be airred during the prime time (weeknights and weekends nights) and most were family oriented. Families, specially etxtended families (Dad, mom, kids, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and others), sat together and watched anime. When the kids grew up to teens, twenties, and thirties, they still watched anime by themselves or with their family if they had one.
But now families are becoming smaller (nucleuar family) and families are not spending as much time together as they used to do, and kids tends to watch anime shows alone. Because of this, when these kids grew up they now all have the impression that ANIME IS FOR KIDS. In this era, the popular shows that young people tends to watch are games/vareity/music shows. This caused many anime to be axed from the primetime slots by many network (not just fuji). That's why there aren't that many animes showes in primetime now then 10 or 30 years ago.
One last thing: The decisions in NARUTO did not effect the decision on ONE PIECE. NARUTO is produced by PIERO, INC. and airred by TV TOKYO. Fuji TV and TV Tokyo are rivals and the last thing they will do is mimicing each other.

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
I really wish someone could get to the bottom of the whole time/day change thing. :(
There is a rumor that Fuji TV Executives thinks that Variety Shows (shows with famous actors/actresses) are more popular and get more TV rating than Anime, and therefor ONE PIECE getting axed from the primetime. There is a also rumor that ONE PIECE could completly get cut from the network.
Anyhow, I have the regional time chart by TV station. This chart shows when the next episode of ONE PIECE (epi. 279) will be aired . Depending on where you live, next episode is not aired till Nov 5.

I do not know if anyone mentioned but Fuji TV appreanlty decided to cut ONE PIECE from the National Braodcast (in Japan). Depending on the area, the broadcast date/time is different and unfortunately in some area, there will be no broadcast at all!!
btw…, In Tokyo (Kantou Region)..., the broadcast time is SATURDAY 9:00 AM JST. I hope that people that feeds including Saiyaman and Maplesnow knows about this...

RE: FIFA World Cup 2006
I was always rooting for England (Japan is first though).
Btw, I think Portugues played very well today. Yea, the ref did kinda lost control of the game, but I give a lot of credit to the Portugues players. Thus far, this probably was one of the best games, well…., besdie Mexico vs. Argentina.

RE: FIFA World Cup 2006
The problem with the US was that media hyped it up so much that the team was over-confident. In stead of criticizing the team, media kept saying that we have the best USMNT going to the world cup and maybe they are even good enought to win the World Cup.
When I watching "the send off games" against Morocco, Venezuela, and Lativia, I was telling all my friends that everytime the oppents missed a sitter, "if that was Italy or Chezh, they would have scored…." and everyone laughed at me. I think US paid its price for that.
When Japan scored against Brazil I thought I was dreaming. In fact the dream ended in 12 minutes.

RE: FIFA World Cup 2006
I have been following Japanese Football since J.LEAGUE was formed in 1993 (I was only 6 back then). The game against Aussie was very shocking. We need to come out strong against Croats.
That game clearly showed that Zico is really STUPID. He was a greate player, but he is not a good manager. I can not still figure out why he did not sub in Inamoto, one of the best defesive midfieder Japan NT has. It was one of those games that Aussie did not really won, but Japan killed themselves in the end. Kawaguchi played really well, until that first goal. One mistake changes the football and that is the scariest/fantastic thing about this sports.
Anyway, if you want to passionately talk about Football go here: www.BigSoccer.com
It's a online board just like here, except you can talk about football all you want. -

So…., no one has the RAW version of 20th Century Boys? So far I read Vol. 1-3. I need the rest.

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
Guys…. you have to release that when TOEI made this Opening Theme, they had to work with all the episode that is published in Shonen Jump (epi 411 comes out today). If they were lucky then they may have samples of next 5 to 7 episodes. That's why all the spoliers at the end of the Opening Theme were events occured before manga epi 411. They do not have access beyond this point.
I am pretty sure that ODA has not revealed that if Franky or Pauli is going to join to anyone else. We have seen hints of Franky (or Pauli) joining, but that does not mean anything, until it actually happens.
-
RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
Okay…. I know that a lot people is excited that 264 came out today, after the two-week blank, but I have some bad news. Episode 265 which was originally planned to air on May 28, is now moved to June 4.

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
Huh? Maplesnow's episodes ARE about 100 MB though…The one that UNKNOWNFILE put up is a full 200 MB. Are you sure you don't have your files confused?
Edit Eh, sorry for double posting.
What I meant to say was, I would like to get the RAW version (since I understand Japanese), but there are no RAW version lower than 100MB. That's why I always get MAPLESNOW version. Quality is not bad for 100MB.

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
I prefer RAW versions, but it's hard to get a good quality episodes just within 100 MB, so I always get MAPLESNOW.

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
Great intro but why do J-Pop songs always have to have an obligatory inane English word or two? I'll never get used to it, even hearing the stuff all the time here.
Because it sounds cool to the Japanese audience. If you live in Japan, you should know that.

Also don't forget there is a simular thing called POSIEDON (from Greek Myth). It is very likely that PLUTON came from PLUTO.

RE: Zoro's new…stuff
@TatsuMaki:
Has anybody noticed the formula that Zoro's moves go through? First he started out with moves based on animals like Dragon Coil and Lion's Requim. Now all his attacks are named after demons. Kaku even mentioned his ki felt like that of a demon. My prediction is that farther along in the series, his moves will be named after japanese gods like Susan-o and Tsukiomi
Actually he uses more of Shinto/Buddist type name into the attack. Therefore, Damon = "monsters" of Buddist belief are often used in Zoro's attack.
-
RE: Zoro's new…stuff
No… all Zoro wanted to do was make attacks that sound like types of onigiri "Gyu-zume (Stuffed Beef)" and "Ebi (Shrimp) Mayonnaise Onigiri"

RE: OFFICIAL RAW Discussion
Yea… so that they can cut down the cost of the experienced animators and hire cheap animators.
That's why many OP fans boycut the anime. They think that Toei is just using Oda's masterpeice for money maker, withoug even putting the effort.
