Cripplingly sick. I was sick last month and it's hit me again. I can't really form cohesive thoughts or function, so I'm just sitting around and half-assedly playing Etrian Odyssey 3.

RE: Wendy's Fast Food!
White Castle isn't really like In-N-Out or Five Guys or anything, if you're expecting a kind of "super burger" place, Arei.
It's really, really cheap burgers and arguably just kind of bad like McDonalds. But people went there for its execution of the tiny burgers and it got its cult following from there, though I'm sure the people who like it actually do like them. But I'd think even today the real "reason" to go to White Castle is to get a bunch of burgers for an inexpensive price. It's actually kind of the inverse of In-N-Out actually.
In better news, speaking of Five Guys, Tucson has a Five Guys now. My remaining months here will be spent in peace. In-N-Out and Five Guys in the same area. Fuck yes.

RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
I was more stating that you missed the point, which doesn't have much to do with whether you're dumb or not. My apologies for using the phrase "over your head", since I was under the impression it meant something different than "a person out of their element, or league". But anyways:
The problem for me is that there isn't any point to trying to refute your statements. You say you wanted a big, explosive finale compared to what Johan had done before. The problem is, right from the beginning Monster was a story that already had its blueprints completely laid out. From beginning to end, Urasawa knew where it was going to go. A lot of what Johann did either established his character and behaviours, or were schemes that tied into his larger goal of what one could call an existence erasing suicide. Right from the beginning it was all leading up to that "dinky little backwater town" and where it would've gone otherwise I honestly have no idea.
Monster was about the characters really. All the chases and thrills that accompanied it were great, but it wasn't just about that. The finale brought Johann from his elevated status of this monster, of this placed-on-a-pedestal evil genius, and turned him human (right down to who shot him in the end: a nobody). The location of the village was integral to Johan's past, his history, and how he became who he was. It wasn't random and it certainly was not pointless.
I did feel it was exciting. It was tense, it was thrilling, mostly because of how personal everything was now. Before, Johann's schemes were remarkably less so, due to how throughout the series we'd seen a lot of what Johann was doing, but we were never sure completely on the whys. I'll admit it was a load of fun, in a way, just to watch Johan being the conniving bastard that he was. It was a thrilling chase, but where it all ended up was wonderful to me.
Everything in Monster happened for a reason and it was all quite consistent. So I'm sorry you were disappointed that it wasn't a more in your face finale, but if you were disappointed in it period, yet you had enjoyed the series beforehand, the only conclusion I can come to is that you were barely paying any attention at all and thought it was some pulp dickery.

RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
I'm not saying you're dumb, or that Monster is dense and complex (it's definitely rich in characterization and its themes are well-handled, however). But for some reason or another, you seemed to be expecting something that was much different than "Monster". The themes present in the final few chapters were completely in tune with the rest of the series. It… made perfect sense. It was the perfect finale for it.
I'm not really sure what else to say. You called the location a "dinky backwater town" and said it was pointless, you obviously weren't too invested in the series and apparently thought it was something it wasn't.

RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
I own the tankobons.
The Master Keaton anime has been subbed, though, so you can watch that as an alternative to the manga, if you really want to check it out. From what I remember it was given the same kind of care as Monster's adaptation was.

RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
what's your name….???
I'M LEE HARVEY OSWALD

RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
Keep reading Billy Bat. Eventually you'll see.
Before it, it's just sort of the exact same thing Urasawa has done before, all mushed together into a derivative form. Then it just turns fucking stupid. And then it turns into a full blown parody of himself.
-
RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
I don't think you "got" Monster?
I adore the ending. It's perfect for the series. It's the opposite of an anti-climax.
-
RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
I wouldn't say he has a reputation for it.
Master Keaton and Monster are perfectly fine. Monster itself is basically flawless from a directorial standpoint.
But after Monster, he got himself into a definite rut. 20th Century Boys second half doesn't really compare, aside from some choice scenes, and Pluto was a mess before it even happened
! For example, Gesicht always had to die in the storyline. In Pluto, nobody ever at any point steps up after his death to 'take over'. This was always something that had to happen, but Urasawa went with it anyways and, due to some bad writing I guess, never actually found a protagonist to see the rest of the series through. Atom certainly didn't "do" it. Not to mention it very quickly loses any kind of heart, or soul. It was just … without humanity, which is the biggest fucking irony of all.
What breaks the idea that he may spend the rest of his career with strong beginnings and weak middles onward would be Billy Bat.
Because Billy Bat is like some godawful parody from the getgo.
I like to imagine Urasawa can only get better from Billy Bat, but the sole way he can recover from this is to either take a break from manga, or to try a different genre. Because seriously, he… can't do another "mystery/thriller". He just can't.

RE: Late Night Talk Shows
I desperately wanted his first guest to be Thomas Pynchon.
But I don't think people realized how awesome that'd be, since he doesn't much in the way of votes.
If he could get him to come, that is.
He'd be the best.

RE: Post how your day was… (NEW)
I'm interviewing at a symphonic orchestra today.
If I'm hired I get paid money. To play an instrument. Talk about a dream job, this is like getting paid to eat candy or something.

RE: The Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Thread
He just felt like he had a lot of tools.
Got fucking glowyhands, command grabs, lariat. At first trying to figure out how it all played into each other was kind of hard and it almost felt like he just did a lot at once. I was too dumb to remember to look up guides on how any of the characters worked, so I just had to figure out through trial and error what exactly Zangief's "gameplan" felt like, or what he was capable of.
Eventually I stopped being mentally retarded and the puzzle pieces all started falling into place, how his moves didn't feel so "separated", all sort of tying into a grander scheme of tactics. I've also gotten used to how SSFIV is sort of a constant "I am here, my opponent is there, they can do this, what can I do if they do that, or what should I do first?"
Holy gets through Fighting Game 101
Plus the first fighting game I played where I started feeling like I "got" fighting games was Blazblue. Whole different ballpark getting into SSFIV from there. The mechanics are so much tighter and refined, whereas Blazblue is a lot looser, more chaotic.
I kind of felt like I was re-learning how to play fighting games all over again. But it's coming into place. I'm doing it. Man I'm making this shit happen.

Yes I had fun with your http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters/zangief-oic.gif
I want to start playing http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters3/sakura-spinkick1.gif She seems real fun to play and her combo's and ultras are some what easy to pull off.
Yeah, that was definitely my favorite fight of ours.
I guess because it was so evenly matched, it felt like I was actually doing something right.

RE: Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney [3DS]
This time, the puzzles are filled with contradictions!
Doesn't that mean
the puzzles are unsolvable
Though I guess it's just kind of a hamfisted way to point out Phoenix Wright's entire career is to just point out flimsy contradictions and Layton will, for some reason, require this skill of him.

RE: The Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Thread
Toshiya helped me practice Zangief today. I had a lot of fun, he doesn't seem as overwhelming as he did before.

RE: Post Your Pics, Part Trois
Gigglepuffy, your hair. I want it. It's gorgeous.
It's all cut off now, dawg. My hair had been dyed, permed, dyed, permed, straightened, and generally destroyed so much I just shaved my head recently to give it a fresh start. My hair is pretty short right now and I just plan on regrowing it out from scratch. It's giving me something to do.

RE: The Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Thread
Abel is one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, in terms of fighting style, design, and … just character.
But I've never had the balls to try taking him on.
I stick with Hakan actually because of his simplicity. I love grapplers, he's just purely a grappler. Maybe when I get better and more used to him I'll try out Zangief, but Gief has so many tools in his arsenal it's intimidating.

Sort of blankly been going through my entire day. I haven't really put any thought or care into anything I've done.

RE: Disney animation thread
The funniest thing about Tevin Campbell was him stating that he had no other ambitions in life, because he played a pop star in a Disney film and thus was completely at peace, ready to die.

RE: The Arlong Park Official General Discussion Thread
Not used to attention.
You guys would be right in that I'm from New Pork City. Usually I don't feel comfortable talking about a private place since it comes off as kind of douchey when you're elsewhere, but since you brought it up I don't mind confirming.
…...Oh wait, I'm the okama, aren't I?
That would be me.

RE: The Arlong Park Official General Discussion Thread
This, but first I have to ask: Who is this mysterious Gigglepuffy person in the first place?
I'm just a 100% new member. I'm friends with several users and staff members here, so I'm not exactly an outsider coming in (to explain why I seem to know people)…
But really, at heart, I'm simply a young maiden, wandering in through a new threshold, recognizing some familiar faces, but mostly encountering and interacting with new people, something I have not done in years. Finding enjoyment in this new home, I wander the forums, delightfully engaging in things I haven't talked about or seen in quite a while and finding this new environment refreshing.
P.S. you're all my bitches now and I just want you to understand this.

RE: The Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Thread
I'm not fighting Aldrich's Abel. Ever. I'm scared enough of SSFIV matches as is.

RE: Masterworks of the Highest Order
This isn't about masterworks of the highest order anymore, so I'm sorry if you're expecting more cool things like the thing in my opening post. I feel bad about using that name now that I'm actually posting stuff I put the slightest thought into.
Since I guess I'm not actually just walking into AP, goofing off, and then leaving, I may as well try using this thread. I am a musician who is well-versed in human anatomy and figured they'd give the drawing side of art a shot. I also sculpt pretty well. I'll toss some things into this thread like some half-assed sampler platter.
SOMETHING NOT VERY MUSICAL THAT USES SOUND AS ITS MEDIUM
AOefzDD2x3s
This was the first kind of soundscape thing I ever made. I made this for a pal of mine named scrotumnose. If you actually listen to it, it's more dynamic than you'd think. I made it while imagining a horror videogame in my head. This would be the soundtrack to the title screen.
!
! This is a very unfinished picture of Dust Man from Mega Man 4 that I will never finish.
!
! This is a character I doodle sometimes. It's probably hard to tell, but I don't usually draw very traditionally– or well. I like psychedelic things and bright colors, with an emphasis on simplicity, but the Dust Man picture was my attempt at just drawing something straight up. Usually I just draw simple things, ala the above girl. I want to make a comic when I have the time. I'm a much, much better writer than I am a visual artist.
! I'm surrounded by a lot of friends who are great visual artists (like taboo, the aforementions scrotumnose, captain osaka, etc) and I don't compare at all, so that kind of makes me want to improve (a lot). This is a hand I started sculpting. As stated above, I'm a much better sculptor than a drawer. Then I threw it against a wall.
As you can tell, I have a habit of not finishing things. The point of posting this was to have some foundation to the topic though, so when I walk in every now and then to post something new, I can look back and go "boy I sure suck less now."
I should upload some music sometime though. The actual music-music side of things is psychedelic music, although I have a heavy leaning towards story-driven folk music.

RE: Untitled
The Ningen no Jouken trilogy is unquestionably the greatest film of all time to me. I've been dying to get its Criterion release once I have some funds to do so.
-
RE: Venture Brothers
Is anyone else as impressed as I am that Hank and Dean are such great characters as of this season? Never before have I welcomed any scenes with them like I do now. They've been getting better slowly and surely, but now they're on par with any other quality supporting cast member.
And in a show filled with such a great supporting cast, it's cool to see the titular characters "make" it there themselves.
-
RE: Disney animation thread
Fantasia 2000 was really lacking the depth of the original, from what I recall. It was more akin to music video than experience. The music felt undeveloped and the animation didn't really "go" places like the original. I don't remember if it actually had those orchestra elaboration live action segments either. If it did, they weren't nearly as interesting.
I'm trying to withold from watching Fantasia again until the blu-ray has come out. It's been so many years, another month shouldn't be too bad.

RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
@Sea:
Because it wasn't a serious conclusion.
Oh you.
You know, Alan Moore, he was married two times. His romantic life was kinda weird.
"I'd recommend to anybody working on their relationship that they should try embarking on a 16-year elaborate pornography together," joked Moore. "I think they'll find it works wonders."
:)
-
RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
That's a… strange conclusion and not actually accurate.
I'm not drawn towards the erotic out of titillation. Human sexuality is simply one of my favorite subjects, especially in art, especially in comics. Seeing it explored and dissected is always a great subject.
Edit: That's probably really goofy to say considering my current joke of a signature.
-
RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
I am drawn towards the erotic, so artistic explorations of it are always incredibly welcome by me. As I also find myself attracted to the bleaker, or the more dramatic, Yamamoto is a natural fit. Plus I just love characters and he really crafts some fine ones. I could marathon his short stories and some volumes all in one day and feel pretty good about it all.
Isn't this guy a guro author
Guro actually isn't the kind of word that people tend to think it is. All it really means is grotesque and in the context of authors like Kago, it's just a style of surrealism, or horror for a lack of better word. Not all guro is women being sliced through cheese graters while having sex.

RE: Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney [3DS]
Nevermind, I actually watched the trailer.
It really looks like it will be a combination of both games' playstyles after all, since the central plot revolves around a trial. Albeit, a witch trial, so maybe that'll switch things up a bit.
Hopefully, if any character has to "dominate" the other, it's Layton, because Gyakusai has the weaker narrative by far. I wonder if Layton's school homework style puzzles will remain intact, or if his puzzle solving skills will be applied investigation instead.
-
RE: Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney [3DS]
… SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!!
.. I don't see how it would work... Probably a DETECTIVE.. ehm archeologist/puzzle entusiast will handle the investigation, and a Lawyer will handle the defense.
It'll most likely operate as a Layton-style game with Gyakusai style interactions with people.
I highly doubt any actual "lawyering" can be involved.
-
RE: Why your Religion is False?
Have any other non-religious people ever been attracted to the idea of the clergy? I always kind of felt like I could live a pretty satisfied life as a priest, from the idea of the positive aspects they can endow upon a community. But I am not religious in any way, so that sort of throws a kink into that.
In general I always enjoyed the idea of being a spiritual person. But I am kind of pretty flatly atheistic and it's a stance I just naturally align with.
Now tell me if there is a creator, how would you imagine him to be?
A cosmic force. Not a "willing" creator, if you understand what I'm getting at.
-
RE: Manga you WOULD'NT recommend
@TiT:
this just reminds me of a horrible mindrape one-shot i came across months ago. "Abstraction" this one. its just 16 pages. but trying to figure out what the hell is going on guarantees brain damage. it will actually hurt you. physically.
Shintaro Kago's whole career is this. It's good.
My favorite work of his is Funeral.
