RE: Dumb Predictions
The Blackbeard crew will reach the end of the Grand Line before the Strawhats.
They'll travel around the island not seeing anything, but then during low tide, One Piece will appear from behind the crashing waves. It turns out that One Piece is the deteriorating remains of the Statue of Liberty. Monkey D. Luffy will be sitting on top of its head, eating a banana.
Blackbeard will scream, as he pounds the sand, "You maniacs, you blew it up. Damn you, damn you all to hell!"
Tune in next time for One Piece: Soylent Green.

RE: Dumb Predictions
When Usopp finally arrives back to his hometown, Kaya will automatically be attracted to Chopper's cuteness (it turns out she's a furry) and his excellent medical skills.
Usopp will be deeply hurt, but act like if it's all cool. He'll then jump off a cliff in attempted suicide, but survive as usual. Perona will be there to wake him up, and she'll admit that she's been lusting after his long nose for several years and has been searching for him. Thereafter, Usopp never lies again.

RE: Dumb Predictions
The D.s are actually all be part of an original clan, which was not part of the original kingdoms or later left the original 20. One piece is the birth right of D clan that grants the clan leader rights to the new world.
edit: this sounds very similar to Wolfpox's theory now that I've read it.

RE: Opening #8 Coming in October! (Plus Filler News)
Just listened to the full version (I thought i listened to the full one before?).
They should've started the opening with the saxophone. It sounds like they expected that to make the cut: "Hey all kids in front of the TV." The last 3rd of the song hits all the sweet spots. Instead they left in a bunch of the forgettable beginning and cut out some of the good stuff at the end.
-
RE: Opening #8 Coming in October! (Plus Filler News)
I don't it as a whole. The first part of the song is boring and repetitive like Crazy Rainbow.
It'd be a lot better if they cut out the first minute. The last minute suddenly becomes way different and much better, both in animation and sound.

RE: Opening #8 Coming in October! (Plus Filler News)
What's this going around that Brand New World is a hip hop song? I don't know where people are getting that from, but it's melodic singing on a electronic dance beat, and doesn't even keep up rhymed stanzas. The singers are modern pop.
Anyhow, I found the Brand New World intro to be the best one in adapting the style and feel of one piece. It's the only one I listened to every episode; all the other openings I listened to a couple of times then always fast forwarded for the rest of the episodes.
If people didn't notice, opening 6 had both manga/anime scenes AND recreated artwork. It seems people were too worried about spoilers, rather then enjoying the presentation. Grow some thicker skin. If anything, I found the opening more pleasing than the presentation during the anime itself, which was spread way to thin (too much filler fluff and rehash of story line, for children to understand).

I was making flash movies through self teaching in the middle of highschool (including flash script). You're telling me you can't pull an all nighter and make a movie to at least get a C?

RE: Putin is pissed.
I don't think most of you understand what an antiballistics shield entails when it comes to balance of power. Is Putin shooting his mouth off? Yes, but he has a reason.
Though a shield might sound defensive and harmless, the actual game theory behind it is much more complicated. Launch scenarios drastically change with shields in place.
In nuclear game theory, a missile shield is equivalent to offensive weaponry, and building a shield is a signal to restarting a new arms race. Most of us don't remember anything about the Cold War, but the shit is hardly "irrelevant". Asia is currently on the brink of restarting a miniature coldwar already.
If lobbing nukes seems too abstract, then you can also think smaller: ask yourself why heavy (personal and vehicle) armor is illegal or restricted in many parts of the world, including the US.

RE: Three Arrested in Japan for File-Sharing Shōnen Manga
That's why it's illegal to burn DVDs, extract episodes or dissect Jump comics - you're seperating the content from the authorized medium, effectively no different from "reverse engineering" software or taking apart patented machinery (which is illegal too).
Even if what you scan is for your own use, it's still illegal because the manga publisher didn't grant you permission to read the content through the dummy medium.

RE: Gasoline prices rise throughout the world again…will there ever be a stop?
Water powered cars don't exist. Water isn't the beginning energy source in any turbine engine, except arguably at dams (the water stores no energy itself, but has potential energy from gravity, which was originally powered by the sun). If it's steam driven, then energy to create steam needs to come from fuel burning (coal, gas, etc.) or from electricity. Steam engines were highly utilized previously, but they were heat driven by coals or wood.
If you're hoping to run off of electricity, then the current limit is batteries. You need to store both a large amount of electricity and have it able to release that energy quickly. Fuel cells were suppose to become the preferred method to transport and generate electricity efficiently.
Essentially, the only way to produce a consistent and high volume of relatively "clean" energy is through nuclear reaction.

RE: "Laughing" Rats?
@Roz:
I'm on a Folding at Home team, does that count? (Sure it does!)
I knew someone would bring up hyenas. I don't know what the stimulus causing the "laugh" is, though. I'd kind of like to know, because the mouse/rat "laugh" seems to be more like a human laugh than what a hyena probably does. I could be wrong because I don't know crap about hyenas, though.
Hyenas use their barking for long distance communication. As far as I know, their laughter would probably sound more like a dog's laughter, which is barely audible.

I always cringe at the general comments lambasting research due to either its simplicity (simple does not mean studies shouldn't be done, because anecdotes are not science until they are actually researched) or its perceived utility. Like if average joe really knows more about an abstract field than MDs and PhDs, without even reading the actual data and reports.
Maybe instead of brushing off animals as insignificant, people should realize that humans share an incredible amount of genetic similarity (rats are used in research for this very reason) and even psychological similarity. This type of research can benefit humans, especially in the areas of psychology and neurology, e.g. depression. But even then, information should be expanded upon despite no direct association to perceived benefit. Researchers research what they find interesting, unique, or important. My apologies if you really are a cancer researcher, but I highly doubt it.

RE: Luffy & Zoro (Potential Spoilers)
Guys, please read my explanation of strengths in my last post. Whitebeard might be the strongest man in the world physically, but the word used to describe him means more than just physical strength. If you want a more clear explanation and more examples, please refer to my thread on the topic:
http://www.apforums.net/showthread.php?t=11958 -
RE: Luffy & Zoro (Potential Spoilers)
Whitebeard is the most 強い (strongest, toughest) man in the world. That is NOT what it says in the data book. Luffy and Zoro are both 6 in 力, which translated by itself and upon a person, refers to physical power and strength. Whitebeard's strength is different from what the databook is referring to. You keep making shit up.
At first I took your translation as fact, but when I looked it up myself, it turns out you guys were lying about the translation. It is not canon that Luffy and Zoro are equal in fighting strength. It is not supported by the databook, so please do not use the data book to refer to fighting strength as a fact. It is mere speculation.
For an explaination fo the difference:
When studying Panda, Suzuki Sensei would always ask for “Tsuyoi”. In fact, he would often say “Chikara jyanai” or “Chikara dame” meaning:
That kind of strength (force) is not right. Force is useless.
“Chikara” is physical strength. It is “katai” meaning hard or brittle. It is easily broken. “Tsuyoi” is “Jyusui” or pure. It is brave, yielding and true strength. -
RE: Luffy & Zoro (Potential Spoilers)
First off, Sabz actually has a valid point with the chart. It's maximum number is 6. This means there's no room for improvement or that the chart was a fixed size.
If you ever read movie reviews, they list movies as 1 through 4 or 5 stars. 5 stars being the maximum does not mean all 5 star movies are equal.
Secondly, the 6 only meansphysical strength. OneInchPunch LIED along with Whitebeard and that other banned forum lackey about the chart saying they were equal in fighting ability. It turns out the chart said nothing about fighting ability. Anyone who uses the chart to state they are in equal in fighting ability are speculating or lying. No one bothered to translate it to its actual meaning during the previous thread, so I did.
Having physical strength does not make you equal in anything but physical strength. If the chart were to be taken literally, Zoro should be a better fighter than Luffy (Zoro > Luffy), which has yet to be seen in the manga (in fact the opposite is being shown). Sabz has been trying to tell you that the chart isn't literal. He's right.

RE: Global Warming, Evironmentalism and all that jazz.
Al gore was a man ahead of his time. He gets crap for the internet urban legend, but in reality he was a key sponsor to internet and communications. He was even awarded for his contributions by Vinton Cerf, founding father of the internet.
He sponsored key science bills during his time as a senator and throughout vice presidency. Much of that funding was canned when Bush took office.
Really, I think his environmentalism lost him votes. There was much more skepticism about global warming in the 1990s. Now in the 2000s we have governmental and international government organizations, consisting of thousands of researchers and proof readers, making it clear that global climate change is a real problem, with very high probability of being caused by humans. Even businesses like ExxonMobil now admit the existence of global climate change and the effect of CO2
I'm surprised old natural effects, like volcanoes and ice ages, are still being used as arguments against human contribution. Those were discredited awhile ago, and are taken into consideration when viewing overall global climate change by researchers. Catch up with the times, the new skeptic research trends are on things like cosmic rays.

RE: The next new Nakama?
I haven't kept track of the thread, but if it hasn't been said, then a fishwoman (mermaid) siren would be perfect.

This would give the hypnotist ability for fighting and musical ability for crew position. Plus it'd be a female and a fishwoman. She might be a little old, but I don't think that'd stop Sanji.

RE: Could Shadow Stealing Have a Physics Based Explanation
I think the whole arc is a slight tip of the hat to Hellsing. No, Hellsing didn't invent any of its lore, but I do think there's enough of a combination to be worth mentioning. Moria has the potential to be the most badass looking villain in one piece if he's similar to an Alucard Oda style.
We've seen the style and creatures of this arc before. I always found Alucards shadows (baskervilles/cerberus included) to be the most interesting scenes:
!
-
RE: Could Shadow Stealing Have a Physics Based Explanation
It's a misconception that the shadow is what you see. What you're seeing on a wall or ground is the projection of a shadow, not the shadow itself.
Even if a room is illuminated from all sides, if there's something in the middle of the room, a shadow will be formed. Opaque objects either absorb or reflect light. If light is absorbed, then the shadow will be projected upon all sides.
If light is reflected upon a mirrored object on all sides, then the shadow becomes undetectable (by measure light output in lumens), but still technically there. This is similar to a diffracted shadow, where no light is lost due to absorption, but projected from one direction to another.
A shadow is a LACK of something: it's a lack of light on a projected area due to the blocking or diffracting of the rays that would appear without the interference.
Regardless, a shadow is not something that can be captured, since it does not physically exist. A shadow is defined from light (tangible and perceptible). Lights are not defined from shadows.
-
RE: Could Shadow Stealing Have a Physics Based Explanation
It's impossible to steal a shadow in physics. Shadows are not tangible, they're an absence of something. This is like having a completely empty box, and saying you're gonna steal what's inside the box. Well whoopdeedoo, you've stolen nothing.
Any reflection, diffraction, or absorption of light causes a shadow or moves it to someplace else. Adding lights does not remove a shadow. You won't be able to see the shadow anymore if lights are added (a problem of perception precision), but it's still there.
Making something transparent would also make it possible to see lights through them. Simply reflecting lights off them to make them appear opaque wouldn't be possible if you wanted to remove shadows. If a transparent person walks up to a candle, you'd see the candle through them on top of their own image (like a ghost). Such light would need to be blocked, which would create a very perceptible shadow in your direction.
Also, there's the issue of a half-silvered mirror. If a "vampire" stands on the reflective side of the one-way mirror, and you stand on the absorbed side. You'd still see the vampire, so what would the vampire see? You can either have a physically reasonable answer, or a fantasy one.
As for Oda knowing physics, he doesn't. Trust me on this one. He has a hard time keeping Oda physics straight already.

RE: Luffy & Zoro (Potential Spoilers)
@$abZ:
Basically, my above post says to let this debate go… before it gets out of hand, which it has. Wait a little longer for better facts.
I think everyone here understands the difference between facts and speculation, unlike a certain group of poster(s).
At the moment, I personally believe Sanji is closer to Zoro than Zoro is to Luffy. I think Oda hints at this through the selection of opponents. It's been like that since Sanji and Zoro started a rivalry. Luffy is defeating opponents Zoro can't. At the moment Luffy is fighting more powerful fighters in almost every aspect.
Contrary to current belief, I think the crew will be closer in strengths at the end of One Piece. Mihawk, Shanks, and Whitebeard are in the same league of fighting power. When The SHs become as powerful as those pirates, they'll essentially be almost equal.
People often label Usopp, Nami, and Chopper as bottom rung, but they're improving exponentially. Think of the fighting Nami and Chopper did in the beginning. By the time One Piece is over, I'm convinced Usopp will be the best marksman, Nami the best tactician, and Chopper the most powerful Zoan in the Grandline. The fighting strength of the crew is actually becoming closer, not further away.
-
RE: Luffy & Zoro (Potential Spoilers)
Franky doesn't actually use bullets in his most powerful attacks. Most strawhats can easily survive bullets, anyways. I believe Franky is somewhere on par with Robin, below Sanji. Franky has a good fighting spirit, but he hasn't proven himself against a strong enough opponent yet.
Robin isn't as strong as people are lead to believe. Robin wouldn't be able to do submission moves on half the SHs. Her arms are only as strong as her real body. She's just not physically strong enough to hold down the top fighters, who could easily overpower her arms and possibly break them.
-
RE: How will Brooke fight?

RE: Luffy & Zoro (Potential Spoilers)
This is why i made a thread on power levels.
http://www.apforums.net/showthread.php?t=11958Chikara(力), physical strength:
Chikara is used in the red book to indicate strengths of the Straw Hat crew. It can be literally translated as "physical force". The kanji's original representation is an arm, and means only physical strength when the kanji is used alone in referrence to a person. It is used alongside other dubious attributes. This measurement has only been used in the databook.Luffy: 6
Zoro: 6
Sanji: 5
Chopper: 2
Usopp: 2
Nami: 1Douriki (道力):
Douriki is tested using teawase (a game/contest). Members of Cipher Pol 9 are the only people tested so far. The contest only tests physical strength, so it is similar to chikara. It does not take into account the extent of DF abilities. It is unknown whether this measurement will be used by Oda later in the manga.Lucci: 4000
Kaku: 2200
Jyabura: 2180
Blueno: 820
Kumadori: 810
Fukurou: 800
Kalifa: 630
Normal marine: 10
Spandam: 9Clarification on Chikara:
It's used mostly for physical strength (the ability to output force).
Japanese wikipedia literally translates it to force (f=ma in physics, much different from power). That's when it is used alone, but can have more meanings when used in combination with other kanji (it's also used in douriki道力).
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%8A%9B…
You can call a country "strong" or "powerful". When talking about a country, you could use chikara. In that sense it means power (political and militarily). When talking about a person, it relates more directly to physical force.

RE: The next new Nakama?
@Dixxy:
Well, yeah, but then how do you explain Franky's backstory? Although being abandoned must really, really suck, his big childhood event was when he was in his twenties - he was already an adult.
It was a joke, but seriously the flashback often comes after they join the crew.
Nami and Robin's flashback came after they joined. Being orphaned was traumatic enough for Usopp and Chopper. The rest of the crew were also abandoned or orphaned. We still haven't seen the event that lead to Franky getting orphaned, but his father was definitely a pirate, similar to Usopp.
Vivi had her father all throughout her life and Gaimon was never mentioned as being orphaned. Nothing was really traumatic for either of their flashbacks, except Gaimon getting stuck in his chest. Doesn't exactly have the cool factor of having your parents murdered by pirates or marines.
-
RE: The next new Nakama?
We'll know for sure when the person has a flashback with a traumatic and tragic childhood event. The fishman helmsman will probably have been touched by his uncle as a young tadpole. The magician deckhand will have killed his childhood friend in a watertank accident, prompting his arch nemisis to ask Tesla for a duplication machine.
Brooke currently lacks any childhood forming event. He died, but he was old enough by then.

RE: Only zoan can eat the rumble ball?
If a nonzoan user eats it, it'll prevent them from getting pregnant.
-
RE: The next new Nakama?
A magician makes absolutely no point in a pirate manga. He´d better fit in a barbarian manga.
If mystic or higher powers are to be included in a pirate story then it can only happen with a priest or a monk. Back in the colonial times, there wasn´t any ship that set sail without a priest aboard. Not only because of bringing the christian faith to the new world but also because people were superstitious and felt safer on their voyage by having a priest on board. That is also the very same reason why there where pirate priest. They were ment to protect the ship against curses.
If we will in fact see one join the crew is the other question, but its not something that is unthinkable on a pirate ship.
Magicians are illusionists, they don't do real magic. You're thinking of a mage.

RE: Downloading anime… in college
Location next to a campus doesn't matter. Those are totally separate ISPs. Colleges are their own ISP, and often have direct access to a backbone or have their own.
In order to use the network you'll have to abide by residential network rules, which varies from school to school. Every school will ban you from the network if you attempt to compromise the network or run illegal traffic.
They don't spy on what you download, but how you download it. Colleges are now using special routing hardware/software to throttle down any P2P downloading, since it clogs the network. You can download from P2P, but it'll run at reduced speeds. Small universities might not have the specialized hardware, but large ones do.

RE: How does Sanji's new move work?
Good fashion is always catching on like wild fire.
-
RE: The next new Nakama?
Technically Zoro and Robin don't have real positions, though Zoro does assume the role of first mate and Robin assumes the role of a historian. Neither position was assigned to them by Luffy. Luffy will pretty much take advice from anyone on board, but in matters of honor and battle, he'll side with Zoro. Also, Usopp didn't earn his position until after he was already let on board.

RE: Theories That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread
Forgive me if this theory is old but I just thought of it. Could Mihawk's sword be made of seastone?
I haven't heard it before, but it sounds plausible. If it's the best sword in the world, it'd also probably be the strongest sword. Since seastone is harder than any other material currently known in One Piece, it's a possibility. They're also both darkly colored.

RE: "It's my Opinion!": The biggest cop-out phrase of the millenium
An opinion can be right, wrong, or neither.
However, opinions without basis in facts should be more properly known as faith and beliefs. There's a large difference between an educated opinion, professional opinion, and just believing in something.
Mathematicians, scientists and philosophers are usually very careful about stating their educated opinions, rather than the "facts". There's rules about something being an empirical or theoretical fact. Facts are hard to come by, opinions are not.
Then there's people who believe that they speak only truth, like religious fundamentalists. Everyone's entitled to believe what they want, but it's pointless to lie about it being true when there's no direct evidence.
-
RE: The next new Nakama?
Who said anything about position in that post, impel? I listed positions on the first page. As of right now, Robin doesn't have an official position. Zoro's position is pretty lame, since everyone is a fighter.
I don't care what the position is, but I wanna see a hypnotist or magician fighter. So far most fights are too straightforward. It'd be nice to have someone who can a higher level of strategy while fighting.
-
RE: The next new Nakama?
If Brooke isn't a hypnotist or magician, then it'd be nice if they found a person who was.

RE: Power Level Clarification Guide
This whole notion of "dooreekeys" and "Cheekarrarrs" and Doowhackeys is completely wrong and is just a cover for people who think they can measure power. It's just a pompous ruse.
The true way is if the thing is OVER NINE THOUUUSAAANDDD!!!! or not.
It's what Oda has used and given. I'm just trying to make it as clear as possible what they are. Other than tsuyoi, I make no claims on what the ratings and numbers relate to in a fight. It's open to discussion for now.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "databook", but they might not mean dexterity in that sense, right?
BTW, don't you think that Chopper deserves a higher Dex stat? He is a doctor, so he has to perform precise surgery and needs to know where to make incisions and what not, so maybe he should be the one with the highest Dex, not Usopp.
The Grand Line data book (red) is an extra manga book describing the strawhats, which was written by Oda. Part of it in English is here: http://groups.msn.com/OnePieceMangav-2
I've seen one person translate the dexterity in the book as "weapon usage", but I think we'd have to ask a native Japanese speaker for clarification. For precision, I still think Usopp would have a higher score than Chopper. Even when Usopp is shaking scared, he makes accurate and precise shots.
-
RE: Power Level Clarification Guide
This is a discussion for systems relevant to fighting, not really for characters. It was made because people were confusing the different meanings of the listed systems.
"[…] my original point is that Usopp's max dexterity stat has more to do with an overall skill with his hands in general than JUST his sniping. Also, that the stat wheels in One Piece Red are not just about power levels."
Questioning what dexterity means is fine. I'm pretty convinced Usopp was listed as 6 due to his general dexterity, which is most readily apparent in his sniping (what he is best at). I pretty much agree with you, but I don't think his tool making grants him higher dexterity, it only shows he has a high dexterity.
That is:
Tool making does not grant you dexterity,
dexterity grants you tool making.Do you agree? I'll change the wording in the guide to reflect that.
If you don't like the thread, leave. There's no reason to post giant pointless pictures because you have no arguments.
-
RE: Power Level Clarification Guide
Franky was building battleships since he was a kid. His natural talent exceeds Usopp. Even trained people couldn't make a cybernetic body like Franky. You're talking about the best shipwright in the world. Usopp was never intended to be the engineer. Usopp is the markman and has been before he started making more complicated weapons.
Anyways, the dexterity chart lists sanji, zoro, and nami with 4 dexterity, and none of them can make tools. However, each of them can use weapons (swords, knives, staves, respectively). The numbers aren't coming from tool making.
If Oda meant tool making, he coulda just wrote it down. Dexterity has different encompassing meaning.
-
RE: Power Level Clarification Guide
Also, Usopp's dexterity is shown in numerous ways. He's an inventor of some repute, a short term repairman, a talented artist and a master sniper. So that's why I think that his max dexterity stat has more to do with his overall skill with his hands than just being good at a single thing, id est sniping.
Shipwright skill is much more than building large parts of ships (the shipwrights did all the mechanical parts of the Thousand sunny, including the steam engine, which is more likely better in craftsmanship than Usopp's crafts)
Also when Usopp was trying to rebuild Merry, he was doing a shoddy job (everything was crooked and such). He's good at engineering (building tools), but Franky is much better. Franky rebuilt his own cybernetic body after getting hit by a train, He has also built more technologically advanced, detailed, and devestating weapons than Usopp.
-
RE: Power Level Clarification Guide
I agree with Franklin D. Roosevelt – best user name ever, by the way! – about Usopp. I always believed that Usopp got a max dexterity stat because of how skilled he is with his hands, not because he's a sniper. I think that his inventing and repair work exemplify his dexterity better than his sniping does, as his sniping is more hand to eye coordination than pure dex. Also, I don't really feel that his intelligence plays a terribly huge role in his workshop-ing; of course Usopp has to be fairly smart to come up with and invent the things that he does, but some of his inventions were wrought by pure accident as well. Take the Clima Tact, for instance. It's an amazingly powerful weapon, but it was one that Usopp invented on accident. It took Nami's preternatural weather sense to truly understand how powerful a weapon it was, whereas to Usopp it was little more than a party trick and means of distraction.
Being dexterous in general will lead to better sniping and small manipulation for tool making, however, since this is talking more about power levels (fighting), then I'd say the more important association is his sniping. He does have good tool making (compared to the other SH), but it's not as good as you'd make it out to be, since we've seen engineers and shipwrights in one piece do a better job than Usopp (such as Franky). However, compared to the rest of the world, Usopp is probably one of the best snipers. We've only seen 2-3 snipers, so far, better than him.
Essentially when the new book comes out and Franky has a higher dexterity than Usopp, we'll know for sure if it's inclusive of tool making.
-
RE: Power Level Clarification Guide
@Franklin:
Usopp did not get a 6 for Dexterity because he was a sniper. He himself is a weak man, but he makes use of the tools he has and invents new types of stars to fight those that are exponentially stronger than him.
He's a marksman, which needs dexterity (in the more literal sense). Inventing tricky tools relates more to his intelligence. He's been using the slingshot before his other tools (dials, etc.). The red book was written before Alabasta, I believe.
Your probaly right. When I was examing the Red Book I asked my mom because Im not very fluent in Mandarin, (Japanese and Mandarin have many of the same characters) and she informed me it was power.
You can call a country "strong" or "powerful". When talking about a country, you could use chikara. In that sense it means power (political and militarily). When talking about a person, it relates more directly to physical force.
There's combinations that can mean what you're saying (活力 - katsuryoku). For the literal power you're thinking of, apparently it's:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%BB%95%E4%BA%8B%E7%8E%87Really, the semantics of power/strength isn't as important as Oda's intention. Within One Piece, douriki relates to physical strength. "Riki" in this case another pronunciation (in Japanese) for chikara (力), where douriki (道力) is literally translated to something like "method of strength".
-
RE: Power Level Clarification Guide
@Kma:
Also isnt the more direct translation of 力, Power? Power is a combination of speed and strength, more precisely in Physics terms, the amount work done in a second, which is much more useful then Strength in a fight.
It's used mostly for physical strength (the ability to output force).
Japanese wikipedia literally translates it to force (f=ma in physics, much different from power). That's when it is used alone, but can have more meanings when used in combination with other kanji (it's also used in douriki道力).
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%8A%9BFrom another page:
