in my personal experience viz seems to want to stay consistent with whatever terms the anime on TV uses if it's currently running alongside the manga
(such as Naruto first using "art of the doppelganger" then "art of the shadow doppelganger" and now it's finally simply "art of the shadow clone" and is usually written as "kagebunshin no jutsu" below it).

Is "time of an episode" really an applicable reason to complain considering this is the manga forum? I was pretty much assuming we were all talking about the dragonball manga here. In the manga, they almost never do that "oh hey goku and freeza are fighting here's bulma and a frog that you don't care about" thing. The reason they did that was so that they could sprinkle filler within each episode instead of going completely canon and then doing a couple filler arcs (they only had one filler arc ever).

Saying Dragonball is only about "beating the bad guy" is like saying that One Piece is only about "beating the bad guy". Both of their respective stories are told in arcs which end with the main character fighting the strongest enemy of that respective arc.

Of course the main goal of Dragonball past the RR army arc was to save the world. How is this any better than the goal of One Piece, to become the "pirate king"? Luffy hasn't saved the world yet but he probably will, it's just that the enemies in One Piece have yet to reach a magnitude of a Freeza, Cell, or Buu. But they probably will soon enough.

And when you knock Dragonball for being too much fighting, almost all shonen manga are 50% or more fighting. You call One Piece "a great mix of adventure and fighting" but most of the time while they're adventuring they're fighting something or someone.

Take Enies Lobby. That was one, huge fight arc. Most of One Piece IS the fighting. For instance, only a few chapters into this new arc and the crew is about to fight their first enemy (cerberus).

Actually, I think the problem wasn't that Toriyama was more interested in the fights but that that was the easiest thing to do. The fans liked the fights and they were easy, so he put in a lot of fights. After the Freeza saga Toriyama obviously started getting a ltitle tired of Dragonball. You can tell because the Freeza saga honestly has just as much adventure as the previous Dragonball arcs did, on Namek, with a fair share of fights but they didn't really culminate untill the Ginyu Force arrived.

You can also tell that Toriyama started getting tired when arcs stopped focusing around the Dragonballs. All arcs prior to Cell focused on Dragonballs. The Freeza arc was obviously supposed to be the last one, considering the Namek dragonballs were, at that point, "super dragonballs", the true dragonballs and the last ones they would need to collect on their adventures.

People have a lot of really stupid preconceptions about Dragonball. Everyone should do themselves a favor and just read the manga without any pre-conceived notions about how much it sucks or how stupid it is or how it's just "fight fight fight" and it's the exact same fight every time.

I mean, Oda, Kishimoto, Kubo, they all cite Dragonball as inspiration. I mean, it must be good if nearly ALL of the new-gen mangaka are completely madly in love with it.

Also, Toriyama didn't let the fans write the Buu saga. Not at all. Fans don't really have THAT much say in the matter, it really comes down to Toriyama's editor and the people at shueisha. They're the ones who probably thought it was better that Goku came back, and thought it was better that Buu transform, etc. etc.

It happens to every mangaka. Hell, it's probably happened to Oda a few times as well. "Well, Oda-san, I don't think it would be in the best interests of this light-hearted manga to let someone such as pell die for good". You know, things like that, they happen to every manga author. That's why they have editors.

I hatehateHATE when people put down dragonball.

It sucks horribly. Dragonball is probably the no. 1 manga I've ever read (with one piece somewhere up there).

I can't believe people are saying things like, "Dragonball is way too predictable". Are you serious? The only reason you say that is because dragonball has been around for so long that everyone knows how it turns out. Nobody would've known that Goku was an alien, or that Piccolo would turn good and give his life to save Gohan. Or that the Red Ribbon Army would return in the Cell Saga to extract revenge on Goku. Hell, there is a lot of stuff. You also couldn't predict that Goten/Trunks would ever physically fuse in the Buu Saga, something that I can't think of happening in any shonen manga previously.

And I also can't believe people are saying "The characters in Dragonball never grow!"

Jeesh. They do just as much as the characters in One Piece. Piccolo turns from Homicidal maniac to a lovable monster who gives his life for a child. Gohan turns from a wimpy-child to a great warrior. Vegeta finally realizes that he isn't the best in the universe. Of course not EVERYONE grows, but there are a lot more characters in DBZ compared to One Piece.

Dragonball isn't bad. Not even a little bit. It's just as good as one piece.

I think the best Villain is Blackbeard.

And he hasn't even gotten his own arc yet!

I'm not getting bent out of shape at all. I'm just saying. Some people insert needless swearing into the Japanese language. Because some words don't have a direct translation into english, and can mean a lot of things sometimes people use the worst possible word in that situation.

For example, a lot of kid's show's/comics in japan use the word "kuso". a lot of people translate that as shit but I don't think that's necessary and most of the time crap is better (so is damn in some contexts).

Sure, we're all adults but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy a translation that honors Oda's original intentions! =D

And One Piece is targeted at kids…teens isn't the way to put it really. More like 9 to 13 age group (but then again so is "Avatar: the last Airbender" and that show is pretty amazing).

wow. this is really one of the better OP scanlation's i've had the pleasure of reading. but i do have one constructive criticism! franky says fuckers, and i really don't think that this is Oda's original intention with franky in that scene. i don't think profanity like that has a place in one piece quite honestly!

unless you know something i don't and oda really made franky sound THAT mad that he would say fuckers. it's just that, in japan One Piece is a manga targeted at children and i'd like it to be as close to the original as possible, even as far as the childish-ness goes, that's part of one piece's charm!

I have bleach 1-5 and they are definitely NOT a part of the Shonen Jump Advanced line…Unless they changed it in future releases, that is.

I think the main reason for them not including Bleach is because One Piece is much more popular in Japan and at first that was the only way to judge the popularity of certain series (One Piece, Naruto)
