If I remember right, the "Usoppu" error in the We Go opening was originally just on an ep or two when the arc just started, but it's there every week on the Toonami broadcast over 6 eps deep now. Guess they only make one master cut of each opening for their shows rather than recutting it each time, which makes sense, but every time I see the error I wince a little. Still, its so nice to have the show back on the air. Seeing the dub airing and being greeted by that shiny solid gold Funi logo every week feels good. I was grinning from ear to ear that first night it returned.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Since it was the raw version, did it have "Fanfare" playing during the credits or was it the replacement music from the movie's soundtrack that Funi swapped it with for the DVD/ BD release?
-
RE: Would you have supported an Uncut One Piece dub… with the 4kids cast?
Only if it meant getting a version of We Are from them like this with the same energy but with a more faithful translation of the lyrics.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Maybe my imagination is lacking right now but its hard for me to picture Kaido in english with any other voice than the one Daman Mills provided for Bullet, which looking back almost has me wishing that they saved him for Kaido. Then again there's nothing stopping them from taking Kaido in another direction like they did for Whitebeard, which, I wouldn't mind too much, but I know sub watchers would complain into oblivion that the voice doesn't match the sub even if the acting and emotion is great.
-
RE: 990: "Thunder Bagua! Enter Kaido's Son"
I for one like the recent aspect ratio changes for flashbacks and wish more of the directors adopted it. The way I see it, the black borders on the top and bottom of the screen is a clever adaptation of how the panel gutters go black during a flashback in the manga.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
One little thing Funi tends to do in their dubs that I always find cool is the booming echo effect they tend to add when characters shout out their attack names, and not just in their One Piece dub, but MHA and DBS too. Adds a bit more power compared to the sub versions, but I guess one could also argue that the sub actor's screams are so powerful by themselves that echo effects and other enhancements aren't needed as much or at all, getting away with the raw audio instead.

RE: How popular was Kids One Piece in the USA?
I feel like 4kids didn't actually ruin One Piece's chances of succeeding in the US, it was just delayed by well over a decade (seeing how the series' popularity in the US has exploded in the last decade due to the initial spark of both Naruto and Bleach ending leaving a void viewers needed to fill, followed by the perfect storm years after that consisting of Wano's anime adaptation, Netflix starting to stream the show, the pandemic giving people time to start it and catch up, and positive word of mouth from big name youtubers like Totally Not Mark etc.) What 4kids did kill however was the idea that a dub of One Piece will ever be widely successful here. People never got the opportunity to grow up with the Funi cast from a young age so they don't have the nostalgia goggles (or nostalgia ear buds in this case,) to tolerate the Funi cast even though much of the same actors also do Dragon Ball Z/ Kai/ Super which those same people can tolerate just fine or even place above the sub cast for that series.
Basically because of 4kids we'll never be able to be in a crowded theater full of 100% happy fans ready to watch any future One Piece movie dubs like with the last 3 Dragon Ball ones. Instead we always have to deal with people straight up getting up and walking out of the theater the moment they hear that its dubbed, which I can confirm happened with Gold and Stampede when I went to see them.

RE: 978: "The Worst Generation Strikes! Battle On the Stormy Sea"
Loved the episode, though glad to see I wasn't the only one who didn't like the sound mixing. It worked last episode and most of this one leading up the big moment by making you feel like you were "on set" in the storm with the characters, but once the big ship destruction started and Over the Top started to play, they should've toned the rain sounds down and turned the instrumental up to really get you into the moment more.
Other than that, I just loved that Over the Top is being used like this at all. Once the raid got started, one of my wishlist things was for either Over the Top, or We Go to play once the 3 Supernova crews showed up, and it actually happened so I'm satisfied.

whole fanbase erupts

RE: One Piece Movie 2022 ?!
I wanna see them do the next movie at the wider and grander feeling 21:9 aspect ratio, since no One Piece movie has done that yet and 16:9 in general has felt "standard" and lost its novelty factor somewhat ever since HD widescreen became the norm for regular TV shows.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Imo they should've gotten the guy who's the current voice for Dr. Eggman to voice Roger; he sounds more like Chikao Ohtsuka than Roger's current seiyuu does.
-
RE: 968: ''The Pirate King is Born - Arrival! The 'Final Island'''
Maybe I need to reread the manga, but I'm sure Laugh Tale/ the treasure was purposely kept featureless and what Roger's crew was looking at was completely left blank/white to keep things up to interpretation and keep speculation going until Luffy makes it there, but in the anime its apparent after repeated rewatchings that Roger's crew is standing in the midst of what looks like a very large object in the distance, even though said object is obscured so you can't immediately make out what it is. Its gonna be a crazy next couple of years watching the fanbase speculate on how accurate Toei is here; Whether Oda gave the animation crew the vaguest of hints for their adaptation, or if they were told to make something up for the scene themselves.

I really didn't think too deeply about it when sharing, like if there was money involved, etc. I just saw the vid, got excited for a sec and shared. Didn't intend to cause a whole thing from it and should've thought about it before posting.

The video uploader did credit the singers in the description, but yeah the title of the video is misleading though.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Anybody see this yet? Someone took one of the english Wake Up fandubs, and edited in the Funimation Luffy and Blackbeard audio. Really gave me a warm fuzzy feeling like "in an alternate perfect universe this is what would greet us if the Dressrosa dub premiered on Toonami."
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
When Funi makes it to the Hard Knock Days opening, I hope they get to use the English version that the actual band made. Dubs of the openings are obviously out, but using this version with the band's/ Toei's permission should be a nice loophole.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I really hope they keep We Are and the other English dubbed intros/ endings in the Netflix version. Doesn't seem like they are since the preview trailer used the Japanese version of We Are even though the voice clips were the Funi dub, but part of me really wants others to experience the dub like I did when I started is all, and the english dub of We Are in particular hits different in its own unique way imo. Yeah Vic is a crummy person but still, on its own in a vacuum, its a good version of the song.

RE: One Piece Opening 22: "Over The Top" by Hiroshi Kitadani (7th July)
Its been forever since I've done this but I wanted to do a fan translation for old time's sake as I really like the song and finally got around to it. I attempted to make my lyrics a bit different from both the Japanese version and Dave Does Music's already spectacular rendition, so its not quite as to-the-point translation wise and I took some liberties here and there, very first-drafty really.
One Dream. One Wish.
'Round the bend, we'll see the end - Over The Top!
–----
We all set out onto a sea, of unknowns
Through raging waters, stormy nights, and rough days
But you won't ever make it worrying, so you've gotta get up, lets hurry
Rise and shine we've gotta sail faster- sink or swim, together we'll reach there first!
–-----
Do your foes look like they could get the last laugh? It could be that your heart's forgotten its path?
Thats when its time to recall your mission- Start taking steps to reclaim the vision- They call it dumb; I call it ambition
Laugh off adversity, whatever it may be!
–--
You've all got me, I've got you, and now tomorrow's in view
So- keep sailing 'till the sun brings us a brand new day
With new horizons, darkness looms higher, yes- but every step will light our way!Now as we blast right on through, just take a second- won't you, to remember all the trials we've won to show-
We'll blow our foes away, with the strength of a hurricane! Now- we do believe you're in our way!One Dream! One Wish!
_The end is in our sights, and its a knock out!Over the Top!_

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Found a vid someone edited awhile back by placing audio from the old English dub of the Arlong Park arc into the Episode of Nami special:
Scenes had to be awkwardly edited around the audio, but in Funimation's case they would have all the separate audio files handy. Technically it can be done, though imo it wouldn't be as great or as fun as letting the dub cast try and top their past performances just like the Japanese cast got to do.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I never minded Luffy's voice in the Funi dub since it's what I heard first (well, second if I count 4kids Luffy,) plus I love Colleen's battle screams, but if another company ever got the series, I'm almost curious to see if they'd try to recast Luffy with someone who sounds closer to Japanese Luffy, or do something entirely different like Funi did with Edward Elric/ Adult Goku and get a guy to voice Luffy instead. Just rambling, but Luffys voice always did seem to be a hot button issue on every dub video on Youtube for one thing, which kinda sucked considering he's the protag of the whole show.
Still, this is all hypothetical/ rumor and I hope it isn't actually cancelled. The above ramblings were just sort of a what-if "might as well speculate what comes next if things come to that" type of thing.
One thing's for sure, dubbed openings would probably be a thing of the past; well, more than they already have been, as other companies probably wouldn't go that extra mile even if Toei said it was ok to do so again.

RE: One Piece Opening 20: "Hope" by Namie Amuro (1st October 2017)
I knew it, after hearing the full version up there, I knew it'd sound better and wouldn't drone on as much if they gave the main hook part of the melody room to breathe by going over it twice in one go instead of just once like how they cut it for the opening, and that's actually what was done there in the full song. The way they did the 2:30 opening cut was just mediocre and a bad first impression of the song imo. It started out ok, but they should've kept the main hooks after the first one how they were, maybe cutting the slow instrumental part near the end a bit to make that happen. But yeah, the way the 2:30 cut was arranged, it made the song sound more repetitive than it actually is imo.
-
RE: 641: ''An Unknown World - The Tontatta Kingdom''
Pretty good episode. Felt pretty average to me but due to these two animation guys being new I was impressed by how they more or less eased themselves in like they've been working on the show for a good while. Hopefully they improve over time.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Great news to hear it officially, can't wait to watch it in glorious crisp HD. Wondering how they'll handle Z's name though. Maybe just "Z" or "Zed" but stretched out enough to fit the 2 mouth-flaps.

RE: Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th
So uh, any word on when a full version's coming?
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah, as long as it's this year then I don't really have any complaints. Though this is coming from someone who still has alot of catching up to do in terms of obtaining the sets and such.
-
RE: New Peanuts Movie is coming soon!!
I really like the look of it. The flat-ish look combined with a lack of motion blur really emulates the look of frame-by-frame 2D animation pretty well. I tend to geek out about little things like that so it was a fun teaser to watch. Can't wait for the full film.

RE: Water 7 Arc- Toonami Talkback
Wow, now that you mention it, yeah, it has been 7 years. Time sure flies, and also, Funimation's now dubbed more episodes than 4kids ever did, and they've been doing it longer too. In my mind the only thing that really kept people from realizing this was that big gap of time in which One Piece wasn't being aired on TV. Due to that, alot of people, even now, probably don't know that Funimation's got it now or something…even though 4kids as a company isn't really a thing anymore.

RE: Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th
That was great! I was wondering if anyone was gonna step forward with a singable version of the song and that definitely didn't disappoint. Only thing I would've changed was have "running" said before "shining" as in the original but that's just a minor nitpick. Did you ever do Hands Up?
Oh yeah, I did do Hands Up, I'll try and track down the text file and send you the lyrics, though I think I did post it in the Hands Up thread. Was pretty "first-drafty" though, as there were a number of parts I meant to change that I never got around to after the first writing.
-
RE: Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th
Haven't done this in awhile, but I went ahead and made a singable english version of the song. I did change some words here and there, mainly the main bit, as it sorta felt like a disjointed string of words in my opinion, though if need be you could always "read" that part as the usual "We are the one, Go ahead!" in your head anyway. The only part I didn't touch were the talking parts. But yeah here goes:
We're always shining and running, forever! There's never been a storm we can't weather!
As long as you're here with me- as long as I'm here with you,
We will find the light we crave so highly-
Wake up! Wake Up! Wake up! Make my heart beat! We've gotta run ahead!Freedom will guide us onward 'till the very end!
(We are best friends)
We know that if we realize, the path's before our eyes- then we will make it to our destination!
Each and everyday we'll always do our best! (Go east, go west)
'Cause everyday that passes by, we know well in our minds, that one day we will pass the test!We can't just settle down and, hope the dawn will come around (I can't wait)
So why not stretch those arms, and grab the sun?! Now everyone! Just give it a pull and now here we go!That's right we're shining and running, forever!
Together we will dream and we will see!
We're gonna raise on up, The world is going down, and we will find our great treasure! We're ever shining and running, forever!
There's never been a storm we can't weather!
As long as you stand by me- I'll always stand right by you,
And we'll find the light we crave so highly-
Wake up! Wake Up! Wake up! Make my heart beat! We'll always run ahead!“I’ll engulf you in the shadows, Strawhat!”
“You won’t beat me! I’m the guy who’ll find One Piece and become the King of Pirates!!”
Along the way we've survived, this crazy rollercoaster ride (I can't stay)
Each passing day we find is more intense! It never ends! The key to have fun is to raise your hands!Just keep on shining and running, forever!
Go on and raise your voice, your head and know,
That when you're feeling low, that you can cling to me, and we can have an adventure! We're always shining and running, forever!
Our hearts will face the storms, which we'll weather!
As long as you support me, I'll always stand up for you
Now to all the world, we always vow to-
Never! Never! Never! Never stop it! We'll always run ahead! -
RE: Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th
Oh wow, before I was like "eh, I like it." But hearing it in HD I can appreciate the energy of the song alot more, as well as the great animation.
-
RE: Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th
Seeing as this is the first time this sorta thing's been done before in an opening, (characters talking outside of a narration sequence) I'm wondering if Funimation (if they can even get this opening at all,) will be able to have atleast that Black Beard/ Luffy part dubbed once they get to that point. It'll be weird kinda like how they had the narration for the Straw-Hat We Are opening dubbed but the song itself wasn't, though, but it's better than nothing I guess.
-
RE: 629: ''A Violent Shock! Big, Earth-Shaking News''
It was a pretty good opening, like the past ones I'll need to get used to it, but I definitely appreciate the fast-paced nature of it. Openings like Wake Up and We Go really make you forget that you're watching an opening that's 2:30 minutes long because they go by so fast.
-
RE: 629: ''A Violent Shock! Big, Earth-Shaking News''
grabs a seat Alright, this is gonna be good.

RE: General Anime Discussion Thread
That interview is abbreviated but Tanaka revealed a funny story about how she told Oda how she wished the crew would visit an 'artistic island' and an artist would join the crew and Oda just dead-panned, "There won't be an artist joining." lol
Also isn't Usopp technically already the artist of the crew? I mean, he did draw the jolly roger on the sails and stuff.
-
RE: Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th
Wow, this is really a surprise, seeing as no new opening ever came out in January. Gonna be looking forward to this. Hopefully it's a song that's packed with energy.

RE: Funimation Strong World Thread
Just got the BD/DVD combo in the mail today. It's a really enjoyable and different experience watching it dubbed, not to mention on an actual DVD release. Enjoyed every minute of it.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Makes me wonder what it'd be like if Luffy himself got a slightly deeper voice/guy's voice after the time skip or something in the dub. Though it probably won't happen as he looks exactly the same, (and I can't imagine anyone other than Colleen for Luffy in english at this point,) but sometimes I do wonder if Funimation would do to him what they did to adult-Goku and Edward Elric where they gave them male VA's when they had female ones in the original versions.
-
RE: One Piece Film 2014
Well, whatever it's for, they're sure looking pretty snazzy.
-
RE: Caesar Retrieval Arc? next one piece filler
Pretty excited actually. Yeah, it's filler, but the animation looks good, and eh, a little filler here and there sorta makes it feel like classic anime One Piece, as the first half of the series had more than it's fair share of filler. I'm not gonna hold my breath for something on the level of G8, but this looks like it could be better than the Film Z tie-in filler atleast.
-
RE: A Study of One Piece Animation
From that preview, especially the Luffy shot, I caught myself thinking "this doesn't look like One Piece" but in like, a good way. New blood on the animation crew? Or maybe folks that haven't had their chance to shine getting to do stuff? Whatever it is I think I'll like the overall look of the episode. I like stuff being on model for the most part but for a series this long I don't mind stuff being shaken up every now and then appearance-wise.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah, the reused plot points do kinda suck, but in a way, I think it only makes Strong World an even greater stand-alone movie that really gets a point across, something like, "this is the kind of stuff you'll see in this series." A type of movie that could help in getting new fans. In one film it has so much from other arcs crammed in and done so seamlessly that it's like any new fans watching are sort of getting a fun little "demo" of what the series has to offer.
-
RE: General Anime Discussion Thread
Alright guys so like, I know we don't like this opening much, (It's not my favorite either,) but I just found this pretty great fandub of it, and I don't think there's any even out for this one:
Pretty different feel to it when it's in english, imo.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
What they chose was ok, but if anything I was sorta hoping for something in-house or maybe a full version of the trailer music they made, but eh, what can you do? Atleast it's not muted silence.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Honestly, it'll be awkward lip-flap wise, but for whatever reason I can't imagine anything else but an extra stretched out "Accccceeee!" Or maybe a couple "Ace- no!" / "No- Acccceee!" phrases thrown in. Either way, whatever they go with, it'll be annoying, not to mention taxing on Colleen's vocal cords, hope she'll be alright.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah, pretty sure they really liked dubbing them as well, so it's probably a situation that's out of their hands that they can't do anything about. Really sucks too, as a Vic Mignogna version of "We Go" would be the best thing ever. He probably would've sung it with the same energy that he put into his version of Dragon Soul; would've been perfect.
-
RE: 616: ''The Shocking Conclusion! Smoker vs. Vergo!"
Now this was a great episode. Liked it so much that I watched it twice in the same sitting, haven't done that since the ep where Luffy fought against Ceasar before being interrupted by Monet.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I feel pretty bad for Colleen once they get up to Impel Down-Marineford, all that screaming she'll have to do. Heard it was pretty bad for Mayumi too during those arcs, and Colleen has a habit of somehow screaming even louder and more intense than Mayumi at times, so she may be even more worn out during those same scenes.
-
RE: Funimation Strong World Thread
I just wanna know if we got Fanfare playing during the credits or not.
