They were half dead meaning they could only live on in the bodies of the Dragon Slayers. They would only truly die once they left the bodies of the Dragon Slayers, which they ended up doing in order to defeat END and hurt Acnologia.
I think the bigger issue is that there's nothing preventing the Dragon Slayers from turning into dragons now. On the other hand, Mashima will probably use this to fuse all the slayers into a single dragon capable of defeating Acnologia because friendship.
Oh well. It was a decent arc. Much less Deus Ex Machina this time around.

I think that's what the "dragon anti-bodies" were supposed to be for - to make it so that it's impossible for them to become like Acnologia. Then again, I might need to re-read the chapters, or read a different translation, to refresh my memory and clear things up.
The whole "memory modification" thing from Sting and Rogue's dragons came out of nowhere and seemed kind of pointless, but other than that, we got an explanation for why the dragons vanished that actually used material that we had seen already to justify it, so that's a plus.
I don't know if the arc's done or if there will be a chapter or two of wrap-up, but so far, this was one of the better Fairy Tail arcs - a broader amount of characters got focus, the power-ups that were given made sense for the most part, and we seem to be building up to a conclusion seeing as Zeref, Acnologia, the death of Lucy's mother, and Lumen Histoire seem to be the only major plot points that haven't been addressed yet, and it seems like they'd all tie together (we don't have a specific date for the death of Lucy's mother, only that it was in the same year as the disappearance of the dragons, but we also don't know how it happened unless I'm forgetting something). We'll probably get a short comedic arc in between (that tends to happen with this series, and it generally helps to take a break between the heavy stuff - take Davy Back Fight, for example), but unless something else becomes the basis of an arc (restoring Aquarius's key, for example), we might be nearing the end (relatively speaking - could be two to three more years).

Yay, my prediction about the dragons came true. And yeah, Dragneel stated it as he died, they produced so many antibodies, that it is almost(?Mangapanda?) guaranteed for the Dragonslayers to stay human.
Speaking of which, if I were a Dragonslayer I'd immediatly gang up with the other DS for hunting down Acnologia. He killed their parents after all (Maybe Mashima revives them, you could fill another damn arc only with the notions and interactions of Dragons and their kids). And since in the last arcs it has become a habit of evil villains to pop up and dissappear again, we should finally reduce their number ^^

Yeah, I never got that.
Usually these kind of shonen manga based animes change the opening every season, which should be around 30-40 episodes. FT has like, 4 openings per season.
Very unnecessary, but I think it´s popular to some degree, so it might have something to do with publicity for the bands.
This could've been a good chapter, had the buildup been better and hadn't there been so many useless twists. One of the things I liked the most with Fairy Tail in the beginning was the dragons, and I really thought the series would be more about finding Igneel rather than random magic fights and an unexpected and rushed climax to the dragon mystery. It was to be expected, but this really is the final nail in the coffin for me. The worst part is that it makes Natsu's journey a complete waste of time. At least it's better than Bleach though…. And I wonder if we'll get another time skip, if it'll be a training arc or if it'll just continue on.
And regarding that part where Natsu and Gajeel couldn't get past that barrier... I remember reading a neat theory about that, maybe it was on these forums actually. Something about the Dragon Slayer's actually being born a few centuries before the current storyline. The dragons put them in a coma/magic for one reason or another, and they woke up centuries later. Thus they are all above 80 years old, and the reason there are no dragons is because they died out.
I've been thinking of re-reading the early arcs. I don't remember much of the story, and there was a reason I began reading it in the first place after all. I wonder if this series has a good "cut-off" point. Like how in Bleach you can close the story after they saved Rukia, and in Naruto you can ignore the entirety of shippuden.

Same here. Even the supposed reveals said by the dragons feel like nothing but sloppy excuses for their sudden disappearance and re-appearance.

So Natsu was supposed to be looking for his 'father' Igneel for this entire time (though he wasn't at all as far as we got to see), then finally he appears, literally out of Natsu's ass, along with the rest of the dragons, to save the day.
So I got a vain hope that hey, maybe the story accelerates and expands now! But! All the dragons promptly die for some vague contrived reason we hadn't been given a hint towards at all from what I reckon. And Igneel dies, heroically, in a scene that failed to stir even the slightest emotion in me since, even though I was told multiple times Natsu really cared for him, I wasn't ever actually shown that, not even in a hurried flashback from Natsu's younger days or something.
Would it have been so hard to have Igneel drive Acnologia off for the time being, rest of the dragons help out the mages rebuild for a little while as the threat of Zeref looms in the background, then after 50+ chapters of activity have the lot of them heroically offed? The way Mashima pulled it off felt like damn filler.
The guy looked very upset because how some of the people here are harsh toward FT, but tbh the series is sometimes entertaining in their own way.
Overall Tartaros has been hit and miss, and the best arc after the timeskip by far.
The dragons made it look entertaining imo.
I wonder how long will FT last, maybe as long as Nardo?
There is probably some young kid who this series is one of their favorites, and is probably as important to them, as DBZ was to me, or Naruto, or Bleach, or even One Piece. The fact that people like me dismiss this series reminds me how old i have gotten, and how i have grown out of a lot of this stuff.

Let's try to summarize that.
Igneel is alive. Then sacrifices himelf and is killed. Then dies.
Metalicana and Grandeeney are alive. And were on the brink of death. Then dies.
Skiadrum and Weisslogia were killed. Nope, they were actually alive. NOPE, they were kinda dead. Then they died.
I don't know how much of this can be chalked up to translation/wording (does he mean they were already dead or on the brink of death?, when Igneel died was it merely his body becoming energy or did he actually die twice) but yeah.
Quality writing. And how long did this take, three, four chapters?
I find it funny how Natsu does everything for his friends, but when his dad is ripped in half in front of him and dies, everyone leaves to listen to the speeches of the other dragons. Friendship right there.
