So yeah I started it and honestly…. I'm absolutely loving it. It has a slow burn to it initially but I'm really into it now. (even if I'm only a few hours in. Just beat the Lord of the Forest in the first assignment) the music is great, the characters are already enjoyable (and the prospect of them being so much more interesting) and the cosplayer inside me is already getting excited at the character designs.

Glad you are enjoying the game. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts as you go through the game, if your time permits it. The game takes a little time before you get freedom to do stuff, but once that starts it's fun to run around and explore and do stuff at your own pace. First time playing you may not realize it, but the game even at the beginning does a great job at setting up the world, characters, and future story stuff (whether it be the Sky games or stuff that doesn't get more mention until the Steel games). As for characters, if you love Estelle already you'll only come to love her more as time goes on.

I think Cyber is playing Cold Steel?
My copy of Cold Steel II arrives tomorrow :-x delayed it for myself because I had so much shit to do but the weekend is mine muahahaha

If that is the case then my mistake. Either way Cyber will come to love the game even more as time goes on.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts on that game. It's been brutal having no one to talk to about that game.

Srsly can't wait, how long was your first playthrough? Pokemon Moon is going to arrive shortly after that. x_X

It was about 70 hours, and that was talking to the townspeople after each event and doing as many of the side quests that I could (apparently missed one to three quests because I was three points away from getting the highest rank). It probably went a bit faster because I broke the game, where I got Laura to do over 70k damage with her S-craft and Emma could do the same amount with a special art you can obtain.
-
Made it to Xeno and Leo lots of revisiting places normally that would annoy me but in trails it means catching up with all the NPCs which is always a fun time. Xeno and Leo fight for the bonus AP is pretty tough(normal). Not quite sure how to manage. Probably have to throw the fight 2 times to get them easy enough don't seem to have the dmg otherwise.
-
I didn't realize you could beat them. They slaughtered me so quickly that I could never recover, and when they beat you the story continues on so I assumed it was like fighting Loewe in Sky FC. That probably explains why I missed a few points. Question about how you felt in the chapter.
! What was your reaction to the reunion? I got a little teary eyed with Machias and Elliot, but I liked the Fie reunion more, mainly because she's by far one of the best characters when it came to class 7. Also, a lot of the characters that are introduced in this game are great, with Xeno and Leo being pretty great along with some others.

You can't beat them the fight just stops. The AP condition though is downing one of them to 30% which is about 60000 dmg you have to deal and all that in 40 rounds. Wasn't really doable for me, did sack the fight 2 times which lowers the requirement to about ~45k(plus them doing less dmg too so your buff rotations don't get fucked up with having to rezz someone) which was manageable.
! Liked the reunion. Weirdly though meeting NPCs(Celdic) again resonated stronger. I think just because some of them you really haven't seen a long time. Class 7 in general even now just didn't feel like I was away from any of them that long. Even from the ones I still have to meet. So in a way because you're so close to them being apart feels less of a big deal.
-
Didn't realize there was a way to make the fight easier. Ah well, I never have gotten the highest rank in my first play through in any of these games, so it doesn't bother me too much.
! It just doesn't have as much of an impact because as a player we weren't away from them that long. One Piece the reunion was strong because there were two whole arcs without the crew together. In this game it's what, 2-4 hours before you meet up again with some of the class? Add in the fact that only a few of them stood out as characters it doesn't work as well. Thinking about it now the NPCs in this game feel much better done compared to the others, so it actually made me want to go speak to them all the time and find out what was happening with them. Now I have to play the first game again to get some background of the stories that happen in this game.
-
Made it to Bleublanc/Black Rabbit.
! A wild Sharon appears. Weirdly one of my favs, probably because the mystery around her is so fun. Also that Joshua/Renne namedrop making me want to know the conclusion to that storyline so badly(from what I've heard 3rd gives us Renne backstory but the Azure saga finishes that story line for now).
! Also regretting playing on normal. Takes so much effort and I'm in lazy mode where I don't really want to spend time optimizing anything. So far I haven't made any new Quartz nor spend time improving equipment beyond what I find and it's been challenging to get by sometimes.
! Loved being in the Nordlands again. Shitty area design wise given how empty it is but I like the Nomad tribe having some of my favorite NPCs(That Thoma/Sharl shipping). They're just so chill and friendly. People you would love to spend your vacation with.
! Also took Claire with me cause she seemed way better combat wise. -
Ah yes, Bleublanc makes his fabulous entrance into the game. A man you just have to love especially considering who his rival is.
! I still actually like the Nord area even if it is overall empty. If the whole game had areas like that it would suck, but in this case I like one area that is big and wide. Agree that the people are awesome and would be a kind of place I would like to experience living in for a while. And yes, Sharon is just a whole lot of fun, and who affiliation makes it even more interesting.
! What kind of difficulty are you having in normal? Except for a few exceptions I generally had a pretty easy time for the most part, even before breaking the game. I only made a few of my own quartz and used the ones that I collected through the game. Also, what are your current thoughts on the knight battles? -

I only made a few of my own quartz and used the ones that I collected through the game. Also, what are your current thoughts on the knight battles?! My biggest hurdle on normal currently is lacking dmg, especially for hitting bonus AP requirements. Boss fights can take tons of time as well. But that's pretty much on me cause I've just been too lazy to engage in the systems. Also feel underleveled judging by attempting challenge chest about 4-5 level below what they say.
! I really hope I get to learn more about Sharon down the line I want to know what the deal is on why she's surprisingly loyal to the Reinfordts skirting the lines with her Ouroboros duties.
Another thing that is looming in my mind is how awful the NG+ reward structure is in Cold Steel II coupled with not being able to fast skip through scenes, :-x 0 improvements. Only relevant because I resolved myself to plat this as well and it's annoying me to no end that the all bonding events perk costs 5 points. It's such a dumb design. Oh well but that's for the future right now it's time to enjoy the moment.
! The moment I look forward to the most right now is that opening scene where the whole of Thors rallies around Rean. Always fun to lead a Resistance group of somewhat colorful personalities(side thought: also kind of part of the appeal of Fire Emblem).Edit: also yeah I actually like the area as well but more for the atmosphere and ambiance. Playing through it is a bit of a drag. Thankfully though fast travelling options where pretty kind to keep tedium tolerable.
-
Aaaaand I finished the Jusis Reunion.
! Duvalie and McBurn(that name xD) quite the comedic entrance.
Legram is always a nice place to be in. Probably my favorite part of Cold Steel I especially Lohengram Castle.
! Srsly annoyed by the bonding even restrictions, like urgh. There are just soooooo many characters I want to learn more about but the game won't let me.
I really hope the system gets reworked in CSIII or just trashed given that it's not a good implementation.
Give me back proper in story mandatory character moments like in Sky.
! Also given everything I learned this chapter + all the ties and stuff I feel like Ouroboros Grandmaster might have strong ties to Dreichsel if not being Dreichsel himself.Update:
! Just did the whole Airship Escape segment. That was a highpoint for me. Loved getting a bit of time with all the antagonist. One of my favorite things about Trails is how legends/famed fighters are integrated into it.
In the first game it was Cassius and several Liberl Military as well as some namedrops of famed Erebonian lines(Zander).
Cold Steel II just drops tons of them and it just fucking cool exchanging blows with lots of them several time and every time you actually get to gain the upper hand it feels super earned after getting smacked down so many times.
! They also serve as story mile stones of growth and growing is just one of my favorite aspects of RPGs, be it stats, character development, etc. It's just fun going on a journey and evolving.
! Also on my list of wanting to meet is Yun Kafai. Dude has such an interesting cultural influence in the trails world. -
Jeez you are making quick progress of the game.
! Duvalie is probably my favorites introduced in this game, and her banter with McBurn is pretty great. The airship stuff was pretty great and finally unlocks another aspect of the battle system with Rean. That and just seeing all these powerful players in one spot is something to behold, and not to mention the reunion of Bleublanc and Olivert! There is a lot of great things about this game, but as you mentioned the bonding restrictions and the way they are done make for many less interesting characters, so I put it below FC because of that. However, the flow of the story feels much better than SC so that's why I put it above that game.
! Now you are getting to the parts I'm really interested to know your reactions about. Before it was just reuniting with the class and getting snippits of what is going on, but this is where the real meat of the story begins. -
well I got engrossed with it and that was pretty much my whole weekend, RIP. I hope I can get a few more hours next weekend but right now it seems like I have catch up on tons of pixel art which is probably a good 40 hours I need to reserve(but srsly I'll probably just sacrifice some sleep shit is just too good that's happening now) so progress going to slow down considerably I assume. Unless I decide to be a "bad student":ninja:.
And yes can definitely see how it's a turning point now. Super hype. It's funny how Cold Steel II manages to have a slow start(with reuniting with everyone) in typical trails fashion and all after that suuuuuuuuper hype ending of CS I. Not that it's bad I actually like how the series has no problem letting things slowly build up, but it seems to be very entrenched into the series DNA. Even the CS I opener which was in media rez was more of a band aid approach to it's slow build up rather than a true shift.
-
I'm part way through chapter 3 (just did the buildnig for the umpteenth time) and loving it. Although I am having a lot of issues getting into it every time I sit down to play. Perhaps its the slow pace of the game but feels like I'm plodding through it. Might just be me
-
Squeezed in a few hours
! Only thing I have to say the reveal of the hooded man. I totally lost my shit laughing. I was expecting a few different people but not Thomas.
! Also the Couragious makes me miss Suikoden and makes me want a proper amazing One Piece RPG telling a story far away from the main cast. It's such a simple thing gathering members some that bring game system benefits, but it always feels great.
Fire Emblem kind of has that too. -
I hate the bonding system so much actually. It's terrible absolutely terrible, it introduces so many issues for relatively small payback that weren't there in the sky series to begin with :-x. makes the Platinum painful too. Urgh…..
and somehow Cold Steel II is still my favorite game so far after Persona5 and the Witness this year(ranking before Dark Soul III that franchise fatigue x_X). -
getting all the bonding trophies is actually incredibly easy if you just reset after getting the trophies
-
getting all the bonding trophies is actually incredibly easy if you just reset after getting the trophies
Yes but it seems tedious as hell. Guide I'm frequenting says it's about 15 min per 2 characters on your first run and that's with skipping with circle through the whole section until the trophy appears. That seems worse than in the first game and that was already tedious.
- I'm just annoyed at the Bonding restrictions(Srsly game let me learn more about all my cool party members there's no benefit to walling that off… :-/). It's a bit dumb to limit them and then sell the restriction lifter for 5 NG points which most won't take that want to go for the platinum(cause second run is the Nightmare run so inheriting levels, etc is better). And if you're in your third run you've already seen all the events by then making it an obsolete option.
-
It's sad that with how great the story is, the characters are weaker due to the bonding events. Most of them are usually pretty mundane with a few character events having substance. The only two that I always went to when they were available were Jusis and Fie, while the other ones I chose depended on how interesting the event sounded. Even then the best characters in this game barely live up to Trails in the Sky, but don't get close to the likes of Estelle, Olivier, or Kloe.

Understandable given that this game seems to be about progressing Fie's and Jusis' story, and maybe Emma? So far I only feel teased >_<.
CSI dealt with Alisa, Elliot, Machias.Gaius kind of lacks conflict yet so his character feels often like he's just there, but I just read a pretty cool theory from someone that played through the entire series.
Rean so far is a bit of a good hearted teen angst wet noodle, although I can see the potential where the C(let's refer to it with C to not spoil) thing might go.
Laura has a bit of a similar problem in that, that her personal quest lacks a strong conflict + being pretty damn reasonable as a person.
So she is more like a catalyst for other characters.Millium, I have no comments xD mostly because I'm very lukewarm on her character wise. Mostly interesting to me because of her ties to the Black Workshop which if I remember is an Ourouboros thing and her ties to the Ironbloods.
As for my choice of Bonding events, I choose those that unlock character notes  DPO, depressing platinum obsession

Millium may not have the depth of Fie and Jusis, but I just find her entertaining and love her because of that. As for Jusis and Fie, they were my favorites in the first game as well and I did the same thing, so they have been consistently great across the board. As for the characters in CSI that had more time Alisa fell flat for the most part, and while I liked Eliot and Machias they just didn't stand out too much.
Overall the characters are still overall solid, but when I think about characters from the Sky games they just don't work quite as well. As for platinum obsession, sucks to hear about that. That's why especially for long games trophies and achievements suck because of how specific you have to do things. I never have Platinum trails games or persona games, because as much as I love them I feel trying to do that would ruin the experience for me somewhat.

Don't take it too seriously it's one of the things I like to jab about. While yes there is some psychological compulsion in this, it's not like I absolutely hate it either, since I think of them as a badge of honor for all the games I truly loved(well aside from games where the plat is kind of a freeby can't control that) and especially for JRPGs they tend to make you experience everything a game has to offer.
But it does make you think about trophy design how that can definitely have influence on gaming experiences and how design and those things can relate to/influence another.
–-------------------------------------------
Just freed Alisa's mom. I was kind of meh about her and Alisa but somehow I'm enjoying their relationship.
Also Angelica, what a goddamn boss. Although I called it the first time I saw her again.! in the church disguised. Love her dad too, that family is hilarious. I liked that they resolved their family issues with a mech battle. On a different note on the whole Civil War thing, it really feels like we're not experiencing the direness of it. It's been relatively rainbows for a war in east erebonia. Guess the cruel shit is more in the west.
Also I really get the feeling hard that falcom is trying to push Alisa as the canon romance. -

As for the spoilered part.
! Angie is just a fun character all around, and having her fight in a nun outfit, especially when she did her Dragon Kick move was just fantastic. The mech battle between her and her father was good. If there was one thing that at that point in the game that got to me is how easy the mech battles are. There was only one battle that pushed me and I may have lost once, but it was an optional battle. The story mech battles are all pretty easy, but they are epic non the less.
Something I've been meaning to ask, any characters you keep in your party at all times? Especially once I made my broken party I kept Fie, Laura, and Emma with me at all times.
-
Actually almost the same Laura, Emma, Alisa. I switch Fie with Rean into the support slot sometimes if I need something tanked because 100% evasion.
As for Alisa I like her because she can keep the CP going. So spamming as craft for easy battles is relatively easy.
Emma is just amazing for non scraft dmg. Also Rean runs as a Canceller in my team pretty hilarious given that he can make enemies that are no immune to delay have almost 0 turns.
-
Fie was my canceller and delay person. Buffing her speed and ability to do that, she could usually attack three to four times before any enemy, which at that point she would have delayed them. Add in her various craft abilities I could easily delay/cancel all enemy attacks.
Emma indeed can do amazing damage with her crafts. Later you can get special crafts from beating those big enemies that are in certain areas (crytalists or whatever those creatures were called). Have her use that craft with a certain orbment you can do massive damage to one enemy. As for other characters I had Jusis because he could buff a number of stats with one craft, and I want to say Alisa was the other one as well.
-
I like Jusis as well as a support tank with his Platinum Shield and Noble Command.
The Suikoden vibes are fucking strong in chapter 2. I just dig it a lot especially the little gameplay additions you unlock it gives each recruitment that much more impact. Also so much shipping going on with the side characters. Doing the shrines currently it's the rpg trope section. So my reaction is kind of been there done that, but whatever the carrot of the reward for Valimar does motivate.! On a different note gotta hand it to Olivier that guy's such a goof in sky but cold steel really shows/continues his genius.
I think class 7 and even the reformation of Thors to some extent is him instilling bracer values into a new generation that is much more ingrained into Erebonia. Given that the guild itself was being rendered largely powerless by the chancellors politics it's kind of a smart in the sense that Thors is immune to some extent to that stuff. They can't be viewed as outsiders like the Bracers and the school is so entrenched and prestigous within the Empire that it really does carry a certain influence. -
Took the day to beat this. Sleep deprived and happy but I have to gather my thoughts :wassat:.
I have mixed feelings on the ending. Not that I thinks it's bad but more like "FAAAAAAAAAAAAALCOOOOOOOOM why you love to tease us soooo much"????!
SEN3 right now pls.A few immediate reactions:
! The good:
- Combat gameplay, I think on this point I rate CS higher than the Sky games. I just love the higher flexibility and leveling Master Quartz feels really satisfying + their extra effects are fun. It's just awesome to figure out configurations that just straight up break the game like 100% avoidance tanks, super Canceller, Laura S Craft Ragnarok, Emma… no words.
! - I really liked the last dungeon, not because it was greatly designed more like I just liked to have the chance to farm for broken quartz. I got 2 additional dominions during my time in it. I mention this because one of the things I appreciate in Trails is their chests feel overall really rewarding. Getting Quartz that are op feels good. So many other games you open a chest and get some trash consumable. Trails gives you power and it feels exciting.
! - The villains/antagonists. Cold Steel II introduced some of the most insane and instantly memorable villains in the series. Goddamn McBurn you really get a sense on what a friggin monster that dude is. Something the Sky games didn't quite to as well. I mean I've caught myself thinking, wait Leonhardt was that friggin op???? Duvalie is just hilarious, she remind me of the maid that's the head of the Laura fan club. Those two should actually meet for a fandom duel. Crow, I think there are people that might feel otherwise but I kind liked what was going on there. Crow was so nonchalant for an antagonist and retained his go with the flow but still couldn't budge from his position because of old debts it was kind cool to have a villain that in a way was cheering for you.
! - Guest characters, I just thought it was really cool to get to play with so many. Only thing that was kind of lost because of that is that it muddied the waters on power levels. I feel like the game treated Sara still like one of its legends, same for some of the other ones, but really wasn't the case gameplay wise.
! - Bigger than life characters. This goes for the Cold Steel saga in general. They're overusing the I haven't given my full effort trope a bit. But still I just love it, the feeling that you're not the hottest shit on the block. It's surprising how few games give you that feeling. That Arseid vs McBurn moment just fucking amazing. Or Neidthart and Vanders!
! The kind of bad:
! - There is a civil war going on and I really did not feel that at all. Dunno east erebonia felt like the safe for teens version of what a civil war probably would be. The stakes didn't always feel like they were there.
! - Rean, I was kind of hoping that CSII would kind of do something with his character but in the end it felt like another setup game. What a friggin tease, just when he got interesting, too. I was kind of loving the conflict that was beginning to build right at the end where he has to reevaluate his own position from a political stand point vs the power he has vs his family connections. + I was hoping for his super mode to be more of a story point.
! - All the game system related problems I already mentioned. My least favorite thing about Cold Steel is that it partly feels like a less self assured game chasing trends it didn't need to. Most of these trends feel like a detriment rather than a + to me personally. -
We can talk more about the whole game another time, but I can agree with most of your points in the spoiler. A few things I will argue though.
! I didn't like the final dungeon. After everything that happened it just felt random and unnecessary. I understand the idea behind adding it and the whole symbolism thing but at that point I just wanted the game to end and having to go through a large uninspired dungeon just grated me a bit. Good thing is the faster battle system makes it less of a pain, especially since breaking the game made pretty much all the encounters a nonproblem.
! As for the Civil War aspect, they are pretty light on the bad things going on when it is happening. That said it's not a huge downside and for me one of my favorite parts is actually something I feel they did right. The whole part with the merchant town being in mostly ruins was really well done. It wasn't graphic but having seen many times before how peaceful the town was and then a sudden change I actually got really emotional towards that scene. At that point I really wanted to get to Jusis's father and give those townspeople justice. Yes, there was only one notable death but overall it was very effective for what was only involving NPCs.
! Also, for antagonists I have to give props to Vita. Unlike Weissman she was interesting all around and seemed like she was nice but also had a bit of that evil side as well. Like you said, these characters shined much better than most of the antagonists from Sky SC. Sounds like Loewe was pretty strong but my impression was he wasn't close to Mcburn's level. Everyone was memorable in this game while in the other one it was only Renne, Loewe, and Bleublanc that really stood out. I think this game had the advantage of having a bigger world having been explored already and opening everything for what seems to be the big climax for everything going on.
! One last thing is I really agree with the Olivier stuff. We knew from Sky that he was smarter then he was acting, and seeing his actions blossom into what they did was great. Between Sky and Steel he really stands out as a great character and everytime I got to see him I got excited. -

Between Sky and Steel he really stands out as a great character and everytime I got to see him I got excited.! Yeah like I said it's more a gameplay thing. The dungeon itself was definitely uninspiring and the story value was rather low as well it was just one last JRPG trope. Did not fit pacing wise. It would have worked way better as an optional dungeon somewhere before the infernal palace.
But I appreciate that I can make my whole party op through that dungeon. It encourages me to switch party members conistently as well, cause with all the top quartz aside from the imba duo laura and emma all the other ones are kind of competitive fulfilling weird niches. If it weren't for it I'd probably just settle into a main party cause switching quart around is a bit cumbersome.
! One of my niche setups was Gaius with high speed and thor quartz. With his CP charge for life which gets restored a 100% by Thor he has impressive sustained dpr(damage per round).
! I actually forgot about Vita somehow I had the feeling I forgot someone while doing the write up as well. Yeah Vita was great. She actually made me have doubts if Ourouboros agenda is inherintly evil or if the evil we experienced were more related to the approaches of each Anguises, meaning Weissman just being more of an asshole than necessary, in the end the dude even seemed to stray away from the plan if I remember right by becoming the avatar of the liberl septerion.
Because Vita seemed to be very goal driven and ready to make sacrifices but she did seem to try to make and effort to not spread harm if not necessary. And then we have Duvalie swooning over the 7th Anguis and the game seems to make a point that those two seem to be of somewhat noble character.
! As for Leon, yeah my impression as well, but from what I've read from the Trails geeks that played through all the games, the universe regards him as insanely top tier strong. Like Leon, McBurn, Victor, Yun Kafei, Cassius and likely the grandmaster seem to be in the same echelon of power. Definitely a disconnect for me here. I'll chalk it up to the graphical garnishes that are possible in full 3d that made many of the Cold Steel powerhouses seem way mightier than the ones in Sky.
! Another thing because I've ranted so much about many of the new systems. I think the one think I really like is the character profile section in the student handbook. Not necessarily the update note thing. But now that I finished the 2 games it kind of helps a bit keeping track of many of the side character story lines, and in Cold Steel a good chunk of those are storylines revolving around other students.
Hope the section in the future extends to include notes for all the characters that have storylines. It's also nice to check in for a quick reminder on some stuff. Also did you do the sidequest with the wandering priest where you're chasing him from church to church?
It's a key quest that people have used as an example of what might be in store for Gaius. It's super interesting would love to share it and see what you think about that one but I don't want to spoil it. Also things related are apparently some content that is only accessible in a NG+ run. -
I did that quest but never really got any indication that it actually related to Gaius. The only thing that made me think Gaius might be more relevant is because of that one commander person that had very little presence in the game. I would be interested to hear more about what people got from that quest.
! Yeah, I think the graphical system of the PsP only allowed to show so much in the Sky games, so when we get something on the PS3 things can look much bigger and give a better idea of scale in the sense of power. It also seems to go by the trope of overtime the scale of destruction a single person is capable of increases. It also just comes down to how little of the world we knew at the time, where we only knew those Oroboros members and Cassius, so there wasn't as much to compare. That said I'm interested to see the 7th Anguis, which I believe she is in the other two games that hasn't had an English release so here's hoping those get announced in the near future.
! What were your thoughts on the palace and boss at the palace? For me it really brought everything together well and showed that while Class 7 has come a long way they are still far away from taking on the stronger powers of the world. The final boss using the two knights was really well done, and while easy like all the other fights before it was just so epic to see the two teaming up. I was already getting sad at the end because I knew Crow was going to bite the dust, and while I knew he was going to reappear I was a bit surprised in how Osborne made his reappearance. Then cut and a cool section with those two characters from Ao and Zero which was fun and really makes me want to play those two games even more.
! Also, how would you rate this among the other ones you played? I still stand by being my second favorite because it does a lot of things better than CS I and Sky SC, but I still feel Sky FC was extremely well done and despite not having the epic battles that some of the others did the narrative and set up was almost flawless. -

Oh I loved the whole infernal palace. In a way it was very similar down to the structure to the septerrion ending of SC(floor + side boss relating to a party member). I'm not a mech person but I enjoyed how goddamn anime that Ordine and Valimar teamup was at the end.
It was great. And yes I think I already mentioned it that while the "not my full power" device was a bit overused I liked the feeling that class 7 wasn't the hottest shit. CS III(which seems to be intended to close out the Erebonia arc) though needs to bring it full circle. The game seemingly has a time skip between CSII and itself so I don't want them to fall back on that story device again.
! Also yes they kind of made it very obvious that Osborne is going to live, Claire mentioned pretty early in the game that his corpse vanished.
There are theories going around that Rean main motive right at the end to serve out Osbornes plans in Crossbell is to get behind the secret of his resurrection so he can maybe use that for Crow. As for the confirmation that Osborne was indeed resurrected and didn't avoid death, people cite that Kevin killing Weissmann with a fragment of the salt pillar specifically so it becomes impossible to resurrect him.I'm not quite sure yet on where to rank it. I liked it a lot, but in the end the feeling I went away with is that this was kind of another setup game. In the sense that it didn't really drive certain character arcs forward enough, but that could be unfair given that CSIII could change my feelings a lot on CS II.
Also the more time passes and games I play the more I learn to appreciate the excellence that was the Sky saga. I will say that I think CS II probably ranks super high among the JRPGs I played in the last 5 years, like top 4-5(ahead of things like Bravely Default for me).On Gaius
! So the theory revolves around the fact that Gaius didn't really have a strong story line yet and the basis is the information you get when you close out the wandering Priest quest while having Sara and Gaius in your party.
Sara will comment on the wandering Priest most likely being a person nicknamed the "roaring Lion". Which is one of the Gralsritter and a Dominion.
(Just in case reminder: Dominions are a special rank within the church "blessed" with the power of a stigma.)
Gaius will comment that the wandering priest used to teach him a lot during his childhood of the world beyond the Nordlands and was a major drive behind his enrollment in Thors.
! The theory basically revolves around Gaius having the aptitude to develop a stigma which people predict will be a story line in CSIII.
This is based on the fact that the "roaring lion" took interest in Gaius because he could sense a stigma within him(-> the same way Kevin notices the artificial one in Joshua, it seems to be a power of the Dominions).- Gaius being one of the characters that routinely comments on places where the higher planes are active without being a witch/magically blessed, basically hinting that he is special in a way.
! On why people think this is a story, it relates to the stigma only building when it's host experiences tragedy. People are predicting that the war with Calvard will lead to Calvard making their move through the Nordlands during which Gaius will most likely experience some kind of loss triggering his stigma with his arc revolving around dealing with that + the church politics that will most likely want to recruit him as a dominion. Even if it's a 100% wrong I thought it was a pretty entertaining theory.
On the story bit we get only in NG+ in CSII.! All I know is that it relates to being able to gather Black Records in a NG+ run. It ends with a major reveal around the church. That's all I was told.
-
I'll have to remember to play that side quest again with those as party members. I just need to replay all the games again because just how rich the lore is. Not usually big on those things but this series is exceptional and I want to learn all the details. That's why it kills me that the other games are taking so long to come out.
-
Oh no now I feel bad for spoiling. Also yeah fingers crossed for Zero and Ao to come out after 3rd.
On a different note CSIII news might come on the 20th on which an investors call for Falcom will happen.
Probably not going to be anything too exciting but we might get some new key visuals.Have you seen the CSIII pictures of Rean and Alisa floating around the net?
In case you haven't:! This is from the Tokyo Xanadu game it appeared as an easter egg as a poster in that game.
The other one is this http://gematsu.com/2016/11/falcom-ad-may-show-legend-heroes-trails-cold-steel-iii-alisa-reinford -
Those spoilers are minor so no problems there. Never saw the Rean one so cool seeing that one. I know it's supposed to come out in Japan next year, so who knows how long for us. All I know is the hype for it is unbelievable for me.
-
I feel you . Damn I really need to replay the Sky games as well. I'm kind of tempted to get a code in the next steam sale for a giveaway and have a community Let's play (which will probably cap out at 3 people max xD) for that extra motivation.
But the sky games are fucking long. I wonder how much time I can save by trivializing the gameplay aspect of it.–-------
I just read the first page of this thread and it cracked me up5 posts in 2012 before the thread died off
the 2015 revival
@DarthAsthma:Boooyaaaaah f*** u Zestiria TitS:SC is coming next week on the 29th.
It's been three damn years!!!!I don't even know what I had against Zestiria.
Also oh boy how my opinions have changed.
@DarthAsthma:Expect a somewhat traditional RPG with a slow start also maybe don't expect anything mind blowing story wise.
Trails probably doesn't amaze/surprise RPG veterans a whole lot, but the game is generally just so solid all around.I've had a hard time recommending this with success since the game really doesn't have that one great selling point.
It really is that it's just good in the best way possible(well at least to me).And yeah first game actually ends with a somewhat painful cliffhanger, the wait was pretty painful because at that point I was pretty invested in the characters and world. I considered actually switching to the Japanese version during the wait but I really liked the English translation and didn't want to change mid story also it would have been a real slog at that point since I wasn't that great at reading back then.
Hope this is successful enough to give them reason to bring the "Ao no Kiseki" story over as well. Just from playing the first game it really seems like a really cool series.
I'll start on SC as soon as I'm done with DQ8 despite having bravely second and legend of legacy waiting. Just to give an idea about how much I liked the first one.

What's a community lets play like?
Would be great to have more people playing this game so we can have more discussions about the games. Just you and me talking about it can be fun but that means talk after we beat the game then this stays dead for who knows how long. Originally I might've agreed with the original opinion of solid all around with nothing amazing going for it, but 4 games played there is a lot going in terms of story, world building, and characters.

Basically my pitch would be everyone interested to start a Sky FC playthrough/replay run at the same time. Optimally I might do that during the next steamsale when Sky fc is going to be around 5 bucks. As incentive if money isn't tight I might throw in a Sky SC code in so people that stick with it/fall in love with the series have a chance getting the follow up for free :-x but don't quote me on that I have the average student budget.
As for that quote I mean in a sense I don't think I am/was wrong but on the other hand when I look at the past few years of JRPGs it's just crystal clear that Trails is one of the special series. Like things like Bravely Default/Second, Fire Emblem, SMT, etc I enjoyed, will probably enjoy when follow ups release. But they did not have the same sticking power like trails in the sky. Like you can really obsess about the trails games almost in a dark souls lore hunter way, it's just quite a bit less ambiguous most of the time(which works well for it the series, it's not a dig against DS because I love that style as well).
One of the things I want to check up on in a replay is the Carnelia books after CSII dropped that Toval connection. Like whaaaat? I didn't even remember those to make that connection to begin with.
And as you've said originally, that's kind of the thing when you only play FC you have to take everything at face value and many things don't seem like they have special meaning. Then you go 7 games down the line 10 years removed from FC and just see all these things that connect, all the seeds that have been in there from the very first title. It's just amazing in a way.
Also yes the more people get into it the better. It feels good when people tell you "you were right all along :-x" after me trying to get them into it for years.:ninja:

I'm realyl loving Cold Steel 1. Although it's taking forever I don't know if i'll finish it for christmas (just started on the 5th assignment) it's one of those games that is incredibly fun to pick up and play. Although it does seem to drag a little bit for the normal gamer I think.

It's a long ass game. I think you're about 70% through? Not sure. That said 5th assignment was Legram I think? That was my favorite in the first game.
As for dragging yeah I think that's just the structure and the somewhat fluffy nature/vibe that the first game has. It's really a game about introducing you to Erebonia and what that country is about, politically, culturally, etc. Given that it's a long ass game and serves mainly as a general introduction I think that's where that dragging feeling comes from.Curious what your reactions to the ending will be. :ninja:
–---------------------------
Been reading through the discussion on gaf on the game. People making fun of "Headpat Rean" is cracking me up. -
Yeah, 5th assignment was Legram.
As for the dragging, that's the reason why I usually will say Sky is a good starting point. It does the same of introducing the country and everything about it, but it's a much smaller game where you only have to put in about half the time compared to Cold Steel I so it isn't as daunting to go through. Either way though, once you play one game you get sucked in and it's a great adventure from there.
-
Wasn't ready to replay yet but was curious about one NG+ thing people hinted at me. Here's the video summarizing all of it
I have to say it's pretty fucking dumb that this is a NG+ thing but the last dungeon in CSII is mandatory. x_X
Kind of backwards considering story impact/value.! I applaud the red herring around Thomas. Him being the hooded man and it being played for a joke totally made me not even spend a second thought on him afterwards.
-
Oh My God that stuff was amazing and so much to take in. It makes me even more hyped for CSIII, and Sky TC. Yeah, can't believe they left something like that for NG+ with how much relevance that has to the overall plot of the games.
! I knew there was something about that Instructor when Makarov made a comment about him to not hold back in the capitol, though what he turned out to be was even more insane.
As much as I would like to dissect all this I have to leave for work so perhaps another time I can do a rundown of the stuff that really hit me, after I watch that about 5 more times.
-
Looking forward to it. Reading indepth lore nerd trails post right now is my jazz. So interesting what different people pick up and what connections they make. It just takes time to find those posts.
-
All right, going to just post my thoughts as they come going through the video again, so who knows how long this will be. (spoiler, I had a lot to say, though lacking information because not having access to three of the games probably creates either gaps of information that has been answered, or would make me ask even more questions).
! So first we have the origin story of two great titans battling it out that ended in mutual defeat (got some Xenoblade Chronicles vibe from that). With the game mentioning gnomes and the knowing the clan of witches exist, there is a whole part of history that we don't know about. The most interesting aspect of this part is how it mentioned the two shells of them being flung to the farthest reaches of the world, and that they left behind the great power. Something tells me that Ouroboro's plan is gathering all the great power together and resurrecting these beings.
! Now we get the history of the Testa Rossa and how what was once a Divine Knight became the calamity it was in the game. First thought is if the corruption spread from the Dragon to the Knight, then what happened to the corruption after Rean destroyed the Testa Rossa core? There was no indication that it transferred to Valimar or Rean, or if it did perhaps that will be something that is played in the third game. Would be interesting if Valimar slowly got corrupted and eventually turned on you.
! The other thing that stood out to me was the Dragon part. First of all there is the darkness the Dragon spread that turned people into the undead. This could be a reach but perhaps this is somehow connected to how Osborne was revived, and/or how Fie's old Jeager Corp hopes to revive their fallen leader. The bigger question is what role have the Dragons played in this world? This is the second Dragon we know of, with the first one being the Dragon from Trials in the Sky SC. Of course the dragon in that one seemed to have a pact with the Goddess and could not interfere with the worlds events. However the Dark Dragon was slowly taking over the continent and if not stopped could've destroyed the world, so was this dragon evil or was it corrupted at some point? At this point I would guess there is at least one Dragon associated with each country on the continent.
! Have to say, funny how the Emperor who died that started the great war was known to be debaucherous, and the one that really helped you in the game was Oliviert, aka the Debaucherous Prince. So at this time we hear about a knight that we haven't seen, which is the Palatine Knight. Perhaps this is the knight that was missing from one of the trial areas that was mentioned in the game. Also interesting how back in that day sheer numbers could compensate for the lack of a Divine Knight. For this game a knight made a great boon but it had to fight knights made by current technology, while back in the day they wouldn't have the ability to make their own massed produced knights. What could they have to actually fight back against them when they lacked much of what current technology would allow to narrow the gap against something like that. They would almost have to have people like McBurn, who have insane power by themselves that could rival the power of the Divine Knight.
! I do like the few Parallels of Dreichels and Oilviert. They both were Bastards who have no claim to the throne (don't know if Oliviert had a commoner for a mother). Then there is the idea of Dreichels wandering around away from Erebonia before coming back to throw his weight into the conflict. Oliviert went to Liberl and gained certain things from there so he could have power in the conflict. Then there is the second person who came to talk to Dreichels who was talking about series stuff. Not really a parallel but it made me think of Mueller and how he is always serious and friend to Oliviert. Nothing really to make a connection but just something random I thought of. I feel like the Kight Roland is supposed to be significant, but I'm drawing a blank on who he is and how important he was to the overall conflict.
! That's what it was, they had the golems on their side so that's how they made up for that. So while they lacked technology they somehow came across the ability to craft the golems, which I assume are made by Magic. If that is the case then perhaps there was a witch like Vita who was helping out a side in the War of the Lions. So the Lance Maidens name was Lianne Sandlot. Now I assume she shows up in Ao or Zero because it was hinted she was heading the stuff in Crossbell, so if her actual name was mentioned then it can confirm if the 7th Anguis is indeed the Lance Maiden or even just related to her somehow. After how Duvalie gushed about her all the time I really want to meet her. If she is the Lance Maiden, or even just related, it would be interesting to know why she joined Oroboros. My biggest guess would be she thinks the world Dreichels fought for went off the path, and thinks Oroboros's way is the only way to correct it.
! So after this conflict the Palatine Knight was destroyed and the Vermillion Knight became the Vermillion Apocalypse. Then the Ashen knight was awoken and was the one to seal the Vermillion Apocalypse. It even mentions how a "Kindly Witch" showed them to the Ashen knight, so we know that witches before have interfered in these conflicts for one reason or another. Also tightens my theory about a Witch giving the one side Golems. Now the question is were they different witches or did the same one help different sides for a purpose?
! And now we get to the meat and big reveal of Instructor Thomas. His facial expression and the snap of his finger before something strange happening really fit in with how the Professor Alba is Weissman reveal went. This really makes me question his objectives and how good of a person he is. The big thing is not just that he is part of the Gralsritter , but he is the right hand of the Dominion. The fact that someone that important has been living under the noses of all the students and faculty means whatever needs to be accomplished is huge. Then you have Rosine who is an apprentice knight, which I'm guessing is going to be the same for the girl that we see with Kevin on the cover of Sky TC.
! SO with this and knowing about Kevin there is a lot to the Church that we still don't know about, and that makes me excited about Sky TC. Since Kevin is the lead I see us learning a good bit more about the hidden part of the church. The Phantasma thing mentioned is also the big aspect of Sky TC, so there is a lot we should learn about in that game. The big thing though is just how powerful is the church and what is their true goal? Rosine talked about how they usually try to seal away hidden artifacts and stop some problems, but there has to be a lot more to it. If this game has taught me anything it's you can't look at any organization and say it's 100% good or bad, there is a lot of grey in everything (made more apparent by Rean saying they aren't enemies, but that doesn't make them allies). With the church having it's own small country along with the garbment that people wear this is definitely a parallel to the Roman Catholic Church, so it will be a big power in the upcoming conflicts. This is made even more apparent by Thomas talking about the crucial moment coming in the future after the silence has passed. Add in Oroboro's coming back and Osborne having so much power behind them, the Hype for CSIII is just building up more and more. In the end while I don't know what to expect from Thomas he doesn't have anything inherently evil in his actions, especially since he wants Rean to be more Weary of him and the world in general.
! So then Thomas mentions the Two Sept-Terrions that graced the hallowed land, but the Wiki says there are seven of them. My only guess is that he means the two gods which after they were defeated broke their powers into seven Sept-Terrions, one which was the floating city in Sky SC. Speaking of seven, there are seven divine knights, and at this time there are three unaccounted for, with the others being the Ashen, Azure, Palatine, and Vermillion Knight, which only the Ashen Knight seems to remain at this time. So where are the other three and does anybody else have control of them? I could see the church secretly keeping one and waiting for the time to strike. Another thing is Thomas mentioning the Roaring Lion, which I believe is the priest you tried to follow in that one side quest, who seems to be taking care of everything in the west. Very interested in learning about that character. Final thought, dear God this series is amazing and I need the other games now. Give me Sky TC, Zero, and Ao now Xseed (seriously though, good on you Xseed for bringing this so I can enjoy this amazing series). This is starting to become the GoT of JRPGs, as far as all the various plot points that start and end or just stay hanging for who knows how long. -
I just came absorbing a huge dota patch so I'm still a bit dizzy from that information overflow so I don't have the capacity yet to absorb and add to everything you mentioned, still was fun to read so thanks for taking the time. I only have a few notes to add right now.
Regarding the Septerrions small update, regarding Erebonia
! 1. We're two games into Cold Steel and we haven't even really touched that shit, and there are two of them in Erebonia not just one. Pretty insane.
But yes the divine knight definitely have something to do with it. All we know about Ourouboros is that their goal is practically related to awakening the Septerrion. Not necessarily gaining those powers given they seemed to be fine with the Aureole being destroyed.
! 2. The Septerrion relate to the elements. The Aureole was Space.
Septerrion element spoiler for Zero/Ao
! >! The one appearing in those games is supposedly Mirage
3. Erebonia supposedly at least houses the Septerrion of fire.
On the Dominion! it's actually an organization not a person within the Gralsritter. Their trademarks is that each member has awakened their Stigma which gives them special power(Like Thomas creating that "Partition" to wall them off). Personally I think it might not be unrelated in theory to the power of Rean's Spiritual Awakening and McBurn.
So Thomas is not the right hand of the dominion, but rather the right hand of Ein Selnert who is number 1 within that organization and is the person that has mastered her stigma the most so far, also one of the strongest people around it seems.
Ein Selnert seems to actually be mentioned in the Carnerlia books series of the sky games along the character Toby who seems to be inspired by Toval. I have not reread that stuff yet so that's all I know from people directing me to stuff. On Ourouboros plan phases
! The overall plan seems to be called the "Orpheus Final Project" according to Weissman.
Stage 1 was the Gospel plan sky
Stage 2 is the Phantasmal Blaze plan in cold steelHere are also power rankings made by Gu4n who I believe is one of the super trails fans on gaf and is really deep into all that stuff.

Thanks for the information, especially on the Dominion. I think soon I will continue my replay of Sky and start trying to absorb more information. There is so much I don't remember from those games that it would be good to replay again and absorb stuff. At this point If Sky TC came out at the same time as Persona 5 I would actually play TC before P5.
-
Oh also to add all the known Dominion members after all the games that we got so far
! 1. Ein Selnert
2. Thomas Lysander(The Partitioner)
3. Kevin Graham
4. Barkhorn(Roaring Lion)
Out of twelve Dominions.
