We all know that Gol D Roger is the first King of the Pirates but not too much information is known about him. Last night after seeing the new POC movie I decided to look into some information about Jolly Rogers, the flags that each pirate crew would fly.
So I brought up trusty Wikkipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jolly_Roger
Upon beginning to read this I found some interesting ideas or theories. Consider the obvious: Roger's name is Roger. According to this article and I quote:
This would support the theory that the name "Jolly Roger" derives from the English word "roger", whence "rogue", meaning a wandering vagabond. "Old Roger" was a term for the devil.
Interesting thought considering that its the Devil's Fruit that causes powers in OP. Perhaps Roger was the first person to obtain the fruit and in addition perhaps he is the reason why the Sea hates DF users?
Later on: There are many other theories purporting to explain the derivation of the term "Jolly Roger". One theory is that it comes from the French term "joli rouge", ("beautiful red") which the English corrupted into "Jolly Roger". While it is true that there were a series of "red flags" that were feared as much, or more, than "black flags", this seems unlikely for three reasons: firstly, the earliest known name for the black flag is "Old Roger", "Jolly" appearing later; secondly, the red flag was not adopted from the French and it is not likely that the black flag was either; thirdly, there is no evidence that the name "Joli Rouge" was ever used for either the "Bloody Red", the Red Ensign, or any other flag.
Note that another theory references Red; the color of Rogers typical coat. Is it possible maybe that he is the one who cursed the fruits? We tend to think of him as a great person who started the great age of piracy but perhaps he was a devil or perhaps the devil himself? Tempting people to go to see (perhaps to die) in search of a treasure? Its just a thought but I found it interesting.
