We all know that Gol D Roger is the first King of the Pirates but not too much information is known about him. Last night after seeing the new POC movie I decided to look into some information about Jolly Rogers, the flags that each pirate crew would fly.

So I brought up trusty Wikkipedia

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jolly_Roger

Upon beginning to read this I found some interesting ideas or theories. Consider the obvious: Roger's name is Roger. According to this article and I quote:

This would support the theory that the name "Jolly Roger" derives from the English word "roger", whence "rogue", meaning a wandering vagabond. "Old Roger" was a term for the devil.

Interesting thought considering that its the Devil's Fruit that causes powers in OP. Perhaps Roger was the first person to obtain the fruit and in addition perhaps he is the reason why the Sea hates DF users?

Later on: There are many other theories purporting to explain the derivation of the term "Jolly Roger". One theory is that it comes from the French term "joli rouge", ("beautiful red") which the English corrupted into "Jolly Roger". While it is true that there were a series of "red flags" that were feared as much, or more, than "black flags", this seems unlikely for three reasons: firstly, the earliest known name for the black flag is "Old Roger", "Jolly" appearing later; secondly, the red flag was not adopted from the French and it is not likely that the black flag was either; thirdly, there is no evidence that the name "Joli Rouge" was ever used for either the "Bloody Red", the Red Ensign, or any other flag.

Note that another theory references Red; the color of Rogers typical coat. Is it possible maybe that he is the one who cursed the fruits? We tend to think of him as a great person who started the great age of piracy but perhaps he was a devil or perhaps the devil himself? Tempting people to go to see (perhaps to die) in search of a treasure? Its just a thought but I found it interesting.

Neato. Farfetched, but neato. I like the thought process (which is saying nothing, but still). Of course, I've related Gol D. Roger to Jolly Roger for a while.

        Jol E. Roger
        Gol D. Roger

        OR

        OLD Roger
        GOL D. Roger

Heh. Neat, huh? Just more evidence, but I don't believe everything. Certainly, Oda wouldn't make Roger into THE devil. Too religious for One Piece. However, making Roger one of the ones to spread the Devil's Fruits across the seas or something? Entirely possible. for the same reasons I doubt Roger is the devil I also doubt that he cursed the fruits. One Piece says no-no to magic. It uses other things instead!

but seriously, I think you have some grounds comparing the two, but your actual theory is highly unlikely.

Roger's name probably comes from Woodes Rogers, the man who ended the Pirate Era. Oda could be being extremely satirical by creating a series where a character name Roger began the pirate era rather than ended it.

Just like Gol D. Roger, Woodes Rogers was the richest man in the new world. But unlike the Pirate King, he was actually the Royal Governor of the Bahamas, and a former Privateer. Years before he became governor, he had sailed around the world on the Duke, which had rescued Alexander Selkirk (The real-life Robinson Caruso) from his Three-year entrapment on a deserted island. In One Piece, Gaimon is a reference to Selkirk.

Rogers ended the pirate era by granting all but the most dangerous pirates of the Carribean amnesty, including Blackbeard. He sent a fleet after Blackbeard, who was run aground off the coast of South Carolina and shot 7 times and beheaded before he finally died.

In personality, Roger comes from Olivier Levasseur, one of the most famous pirates ever. Known as "The Buzzard", he an archetypical Eyepatch and was extremely skilled with a sword.

Upon his death, he threw an amulet into the crowd, shouting "Find my treasure, he who can understand this!" The amulet contained a cryptogram with 12 lines that gave the location of his greatest treasure, almost 100,000,000 Euros in Spanish Gold. To this day, no one has been able to decipher it fully.

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

Im totally agree with the legend of pirate olivier Levasseur "La Buse"
Im born in Calais, France, and thats a story really knowed overthere and the first time ive read one piece i found the ancient language on ancients tablets or ponéglyphs was similar to the text of La buse
There is still 2 on the 4th treasures places not found yet and one of the 2 is from the portuguese boat La Vierge du Cap and thats a 4,5 billions euros treasure (The main object is a 10kg christian cross of diamonds only)
There is still scientists and treasure hunters that are looking for it nowadays. They used bulldozers in 2002 in a place after the lasts investigations but that was another miss
So you still have your chance to grab 5 billions dollars. thats your banker that ll be happy^^
But dont forget some english, americans and frenchs have spend 30 years looking for it and even commit suicide.
