So, how many people have seen this series? What is your favorite episode or favorite line?
I adore that series, I've followed it for years. Used to stay up late on schoolnights to catch it on PBS. Picking a favorite line is just… next to impossible because I'd be excluding so many. But one of them has to be, "So you want to ride on a magic carpet to see the King of the Potato People and plead with him for your freedom, and you're telling me you're completely sane? I think that warrants a couple of hours of WOO.... With. Out. Oxygen. Two hours without oxygen. That'll teach you to be breadbaskets." Of course the fact that the guy talking is wearing a red and white checked gingham dress with a blonde wig, army boots, and a penguin handpuppet named Mister Flibble only helps add to it. Ahhhhh classic.
Yes, I also remember staying up late. Was so tired for class the next day. Heh, the next time my college does alcohol awareness week, I want to volunteer to be one of the people who does dead for a day (not supposed to communicate with people)… and wear an H on my head for a joke. Don't think it will appreciated though... >_>
I rewatched Backwards today. Such a hillarious episode. Also how there was a lost episode between seasons 2 and 3, and a summary to explain things went by superfast at the beginning of Backwards.
I do wonder if the film would ever get made. Probably not. There hasn't been any confirmation of it being fully cancelled though.
Oh, which Holly do you prefer? The male or the female one?
I haven't heard anything about the film in ages. Sigh. I hope they do something to wrap things up, they left a hell of a cliffhanger at the end of the last series.
As for which Holly, hmmm…. they both had their good points, but I think I prefer Norman Lovett overall, he just had a great delivery.
I'd so wear an H on my forehead and see how many people got it. The only downside is I'd be tempted to chat with them about it.
I totally agree with preferring Norman. Queeg was a great episode.
If someone looked at me, I would just do the salute. Technically if I wore the H, I would be able to communicate… just not touch anything.

When it aired late night on PBS, I was too young to appreciate it, so I missed out big time.
I too am one of those people who stood up late at night to watch it on TV when young. They use to show it on Showcase and on PBS, and I've never stopped loving it. Quarantine, Meltdown and Backwards were among my favorite episodes. But the winner has to be Back to Reality.
I call my best friend "Ace" after Ace Rimmer because he's almost a shockingly mirror image of him in terms of personality XD
So many memories, the emo-hawk, the toaster, the Tounge-twisted song, curry and of course, smeg.
Huzzah for Red Dwarf! One of the best comedies ever to be made….ever. Got the whole 8 series on DVD, along with all the extras, ahhhhh always cheers me up, in fact me thinks I'll watch it again today.
Can't say my favourite episode like, probably Queeg, Back to Reality, Quarantine and the Pete two parter.
Edit: Yeah, decided to see if I can watch the whole lot of them one after another.
Love Red Dwarf. Taped every episode (seasons 1-8 plus the specials, thank you PBS :D)
To me pretty much every episode in season 2 (queeg, Thanks for the memories, etc.) was great. The one episode that had me in stiches and still does is Backwards (ep. 1 season 3) In which Rimmer and Kryten are sucked through a time hole to earth in the 1990s only everything is backwards (as in everyone walks backwards, talks backwards, even eat backwards). When Lister and Cat arrive, Rimmer and Kryten are performing as a variety act (basicly doing anything forwards is considered amazing in this world).
But the best part is when a bar fight breaks out (all of it backwards). Hilarious episode, also the conversation between Lister and Cat in the beginning is a riot. XD (wish I could remember it all)

Ok, rewatched it, and here's the conversation (also one of my favorite lines)
Lister: Hey Cat.
Cat: hmm?
Lister: Did you ever see the Fintstones?
Cat: Sure.
Lister:… Do you think Willma is sexy?
Cat: Willma Flitstone?
Lister: I don't know. Maybe we've beeen in deep space too long, but every time I see that body it drives me crazy. You think I'm going nuts?
Cat: I think in all probability... Willma Flitstone is the most disirable woman who ever lived.
Lister: That's good, I thought I was going strange.
Cat: She's incredible.
Lister: What do you think of Betty?
Cat: Betty Rubble? Well I would go with Betty... but I'd be thinking of Willma.
Lister: This is crazy! Why are talking about going to bed with Willma Flitstone?
Cat: pssh You're right we're nuts. This is an insane conversation.

I always liked the exchange where they're not sure they should go on red alert because it WOULD mean changing the bulb.
I liked the bit in Backwards just before the Bar-room Tidy, where the manager is shouting at him backwards, in the special features it has Backwards-Backwards, where they speak normal. The guy is stood there going 'You may think I'm speaking backwards but I'm really speaking forwards, and nobody is going to find out about it unless they have time to waste playing this tape backwards.'
It always makes me laugh.
Dear lord, that Flintstones bit still kills me. It pops into my head whenever I see any of those damn Fruity Pebbles commercials, too.
I laughed so hard when I saw that Rimmer Song thing I couldn't see for a while, I had to rewind and watch it again. That was awesome. There are so many golden moments from this show. I need to bust out my DVDs again, I haven't watched them in a while.

I finally get to buy the series tomorrow. Got a 20% off thing at Borders for a DVD. I called up and asked if they had the whole series set and if it would apply. They said yes and put it on the side for me. So basically the price goes from $250 to $200. Tomorrow I marathon!
I wonder when or how I first found out about Red Dwarf. It was probably my dad flipping channels and eventually found it. I don't remember that well. How about everyone else? How did you find out about the series?

actually, as far as I'm aware with the movie, its still being made. Just very slowly, I know it was dropped for a few years, then picked back up last year (or the year before)

Hah, one time a bunch of friends and I were too lazy to make real costumes for some Halloween thing or other so we cut a bunch of H's out of thin cardboard (from an empty kleenex box) and sprinkled glitter on them before sticking them onto our foreheads with tape. Best (not really; more like lamest) costumes ever. 
To answer the original topic question…I've seen it! I absolutely love this show and I decided to come check out this thread after wandering out of the desktop thread, because it seemed like a good idea.
I agree with bevin that it's almost impossible to pick out a favourite line, but my favourite episode is probably 5:4, 'Quarantine'. It was just so crazy, and seeing Rimmer in the red and white checked gingham dress with army boots and the Pippi Longstocking braids absolutely kills me every time. I love that bit where he just looks so wrathful and he's all "Mr. Flibble is very cross." Kills me dead.

I like both Holly's and it's surprising how good of a fit Hattie Hayridge was as the female version. But I've got to go with male Holly; he's the classic Holly and the one that I consider the definitive Holly, even though female Holly (Hilly?) had a lot of good moments as well.

Alas! I've only got the first six seasons on DVD, but I've got all eight on VHS as well as the Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs VHS tapes. I really should have a Dwarfathon myself, since it's been a while since I've watched the series.

The part that really does me in is the final line. Talk about a punchline to end all punchlines. The first time I saw it I never saw it coming, and it still makes me laugh just thinking about it.

I honestly don't remember, though I was very young at the time. I think that my dad was watching it late one night and I stayed up to watch it with him. Or it might have been something else entirely…in any case, it was a long time ago!

I found out about it through a friend of mine in high school. She'd seen it on TV and wound up taping a few episodes so I could watch it the next time I was over. The first episode I ever saw was Dimension Jump and was confused over the few episodes after that that Ace never came back, since I'd thought he was the main character. It wasn't until Quarantine that I was officially hooked, the whole Mister Flibble thing just had me in stitches and I knew any show that had something like that in there had to have other great stuff in there. I think that was back in '96 and I've been hooked ever since.

The R1 NTSC DVDs don't come with anything cool like that. We didn't even get all of the same special features that you got with your R2 PAL DVDs; instead of all of the features, our first couple of seasons came with trading cards. I will say one thing though, I do like the R1 covers better.

But my DVDs do have the special features. I think all of em. They are R1. Maybe it was changed for the box set released in September?
Hm, I actually don't see the "DrunK" mv on the Season 1 discs. Makes no sense. All the other mvs are on the other serasons.
Oh, don't get me wrong. The R1's do have special features; most of them, in fact. But they don't have all of them. I think that the only one we're missing is the "Drunk" featurette from season one, but I'd have to double check to make absolutely sure…unless you already checked, because you're probably right then. The reason why we didn't get that featurette was because of something that had to do with not being able to secure the licensing rights for the US release, so to make up for the difference the R1s for the first two seasons came with trading cards that the R2s didn't get. But maybe they discontinued those in the later printings?
They're pretty nice cards, but I'd still rather have the extra featurette. If anyone's interested, I could probably scan them later.

Yeah, that's the only thing about the R1 covers I don't like. But I dunno, I just prefer the R1 front cover sleeves to the R2/R4 ones. It's blasphemy, I know.

I own and have read the first two, 'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers' and 'Better Than Life', which to my knowledge are the only ones available in the US. I'm thinking about ordering 'Last Human' from Amazon UK, but I've heard conflicting reviews about it. Local-chan, if you've read it would you recommend it?

oh its very good, can't remember what happens without spoiling things, but all I'm gonna say is that you can either go towards Backwards or Last Human, both tie up the story and are different, I think Last Human is more different than the Backwards one tho.

It is very unfair of Grant Naylor to keep all you Red Dwarf fans hanging on for so many years in the hope that there will be a film. To be realistic about it which is always my chosen path, I do not think there will ever be one. I have spoken with many of you over the years and we all seem to agree that Red Dwarf should have had an ending of some kind whether it be a TV special or a final series. I cannot go into any personal details or the buggers will sue my ass off as they say in some parts of the world.
It is a shame but you do have enough episodes to watch, imagine if there had only been 2 series like Fawlty Towers, mind you they would have been the funniest.
So please don't ask me about the Red Dwarf movie any more. Pass it on.
Yeah, I had pretty much given up any hope of ever seeing a Red Dwarf movie. Every time the production got pushed back I became less and less enthused, and after a few years of that I gave it up as a lost cause. Of course I would still be interested in watching it if it ever came out, but as I didn't think it ever would see the light of day I stopped bothering to get excited over it.
What you posted there by Norman Lovett is more confirmation than I ever needed that the Red Dwarf film has been abandoned. It's sad because we didn't really get the "ending" that we were promised, but I got over it years ago.

I bet if I look hard enough, I could probably find a copy of the song somewhere. I mean, I've actually got a Red Dwarf techno dance remix that I picked up from somewhere. It's not as good as 'Doctorin' the Tardis' or any of DarkMateria's Star Trek stuff, though.

I've got the Whole set of DVDs, Smeg ups on VHS as well as Series 1, 2 and 3. All 4 books, including Rob Grant's incompetence and Colony, The Big Starbug model with mini characters inside. (including oddly enough, Norman's Holly but no Kochansky.) The Corgi series of figures (Red Dwarf, Lister, Skutter, Rimmer and Starbug.) the Starbug I have twice, and Red Dwarf: All the Scripts. As welll as the audio play for the four books and Tongue Tied.
I watched one of the special features on the Series VIII disc. They made more than one ending. As nice as a more closure one woulda been…. Rimmer kneeing Death in the groin and saying "Only the good die young" is just too awesome of a thing to loose.
lol yea, I must admit, for me Red Dwarf probably had the best ending ever, it was so unexpected and makes you want so much more lol.

They did release one….but I never saw it....I know SOMEWHERE I have a load of the music that I downloaded from the net at one point on a disc....no idea if it still works after all this time tho.
