I've got to check to see how it turned out. I sort of forgot until I translated it that Bo-bobo literally grew the amusement park out of chopsticks.
I've always wondered why the Viz dub always had Denbo-chan switch VA's every time she appeared.
Was it intentional?

I have no idea ( stupid characters super donkey punch)

My only guess is they couldn't get back the original Denbo for the final episode so they used another VA. There was a huge gap between appearances…then again, they used it as a joke in the dub so at least that's par for the course of self-awareness.
I forgot to say this thanks Tokoro Ataru for taking time out of your day to translate bobobo manga chapters.
Update: The people putting my translations on the scans are in the midst of A-Block (last I read they were up to Don Patch vs. 6)…but I finished translating the Gunkan arc this afternoon and its all on MH. I can't wait for the scanslator's to catch up considering how amazing that arc was in manga form!
what volume would that be?
what volume would that be?
Current Scans: middle of vol. 3
Current Translations: near end of vol. 5 (still got the first four chapters of Hatenko's introduction left this volume…outside Don Patch annihilating Puruppu, I'm not anticipating this and just want to get through this part to get to Dengaku Man and Z-Block)
I hope them scanlation people can hurry up, seeing you guys scanlate bobobo is freaking sweet.
EDIT: how long until the 4 heavenly kings arc starts?

There really isn't a "Four Heavenly Kings" arc at all. Gunkan begins early on in vol. 4 and lasts through most of 5. Puruppu…well he's a joke and just takes up two chapters at the end of 5. OVER lasts from the last chapter of vol. 7 (practically the moment Rice is defeated) through half of vol. 9, and then it flows right into Halekulani through most of vol. 10.

That's amazing! I'm glad to see that somebody is actually translating this series, and that it's being done accurately! Thanks for all of your hard work, Ataru!

Welcome. No one really comments on the scripts but mostly cause they probably don't have anything to follow along with.
BTW: I'm pretty much done the Purupuu fight..I just couldn't finish the chapter today cause I had to get out for a dental appointment. Its amazing how much of a threat Sawai built him up to be to turn him and his companions into fodder.
is translating it hard or easy?
I believe Bobobo is heavily pun/Japanese related, so it's probably hard as it's more than just translating, it's trying to figure out HOW to translate it.
The first key regarding translating Bo-bobo is that…its chapters are shorter than most Jump series. The typical "non-special" Bo-bobo chapter is about 15-16 pages, less than many Jump series. As for translating, well there is some Japanese I do know but I have to look up quite a bit both on my own Japanese dictionary and kanji dictionary from college and from some sources online.
Once you have that, its all about trying to find context. Many of the puns are merely word morphing, taking one reading of a word and then switching it off with another one with the same or a similar reading. You literally have to note them in order to get the audience to understand why you depicted the joke in that way. Other bits require a bit more work, particularly those regarding parodies and comments from Japanese society and, ultimately, other manga. For example: in one of the chapters I did today, Don Patch depicted the "Skylab Hurricane"...which actually is a move from "Captain Tsubasa", but I had to look up to find out who did it. (and the only reason I knew it came from Tsubasa because I slipped a sight at it when I was researching another Tsubasa joke last week) In another weird one involving pop culture, I found this random usage of "Lipomitan L", which sort of drove me to do quite a bit of searching via Google using Japanese until I discovered that it was a weird reference to "Lipovitan D" (a Japanese energy drink that was eventually adapted by Thai doctors into what we know of as "Red Bull"). And then there are the historical ones: I had this one bit where Bo-bobo was running around in samurai armor and randomly says "Tenka Fubu", which turns out to be an expression made famous by Oda Nobunaga. You have to have a lot of nerve and patience if you want to get all the gags and ideas correctly.
BTW: in the midst of Robo Block (won't get to finish it until Thursday since I have to do stuff tomorrow)...and I'm getting really, really sick of Hatenko. I now remember why I hate him so much.
Wow sounds like some tough shit.
I would not have the patience for that.
I guess I'm so patient because it really isn't that hard if you think about it. The only really hard part is sometimes having to use a character sheet on Wikipedia just so you can look things up on a dictionary. (I have JWPCE at home but I've been doing this elsewhere so its all about mining out the characters and the kanji) As for the references…Google is your friend. ;p
ah I see, I have a japanese to english dictionairy that's locked away in a storage shed in california, I live in utah

Two tips:
1. A Japanese/English dictionary, particularly a generic one at a book store (like I have) won't have every word you need. You will need other sources…either a better dictionary or the usage of an online one like WWWJDIC or even the Google translator. (or a downloadable one like JWPCE) Another tip: try to have a basic knowledge of all hiragana and katakana before using them so you can have an easier time getting them in. With JWPCE, all you need to do is type in the kana and they'll appear, but there are ways to do it without them too.
2. Either get a kanji dictionary or learn to get used to another kanji searching page (either JWPCE or WWWJDIC). Kanji are everywhere and sometimes have multiple readings and meanings per context.
Progress report: began the Z-Block arc yesterday...seeing Dengaku Man (even the deformed version Sawai used at first) was a breath of fresh air after all that Hatenko crap.

oh allright thanks for the tips, I really wished that the scanlation group using your scripts would release more often than just a chapter a week. I can't wait to see the next chapter "turtle rap"

That rap drove me nuts with all the weird stuff going on. I just hope the scanslation works out better.
Edit: 26 is out! Jig out and Wig out! http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33122
That was an odd chapter but awesome, I wonder what happend to Heppakamaru (sp?) gasser inside the haunted house.
WOW, that really was an odd chapter…the part where they're up to in SJ magazine, what chapter is it over there (is it in the 100s)? How many chapters are there to this series?
I believe the series ended in 07 with bobobo shintensu
Shintensu was a followup to the first series.
I know that, I was just stating when the series as a whole ended.
Bobobo-bo has 303 chapters total
@Jedi:
WOW, that really was an odd chapter…the part where they're up to in SJ magazine,
The chapter that was last done in American Jump was 122. (the Stair battle and Super Giga's entrance) Two more chapters of Cyber City left.
As for the Turtle Rap…a lot of the confusing stuff probably is my fault. I really tried my hardest to get it right but there was a lot of weird nonsense. (like the part where Don Patch kept going "Mekameka" over and over...I looked it up and just didn't know what he was doing so I left it as is) As for Heppokomaru in the Haunted House...that's what the next chapter is.
Super Giga is strange looking.
Super Giga is strange looking.
I think the point of him was just to make something ugly and bizarre…and it worked.
never thought of it like that.
never thought of it like that.
Every powerup (not counting TFs like Torpedo Girl or Sambaman) seem to be appropriate for the user. For Giga, it was just to activate the fullness of his art (thus why he looks so abstract), just like Halekulani's was pretty much a gem-encrusted armor and Hanpen's was…eating cheese curls.
Hanpen has a more powerfull form? that character is bad ass and one of the more interesting character desighns that sawai's has come up with.

Its not really alternate: basically he eats cheese curls and gains orange diamonds on his face. He uses this form just before Tenbobo (basically the only really notable thing he did with it was knock Tennosuke into the oden field) appears and just uses it once.
oh….that sounds major lame.
Just thinking: I'm in the midst of translating the final battle of Z-Block against Dengaku Man…meaning I only have two more arcs before I reach the part Viz started on (which are Hajike Block and OVER...I still have a bit to do with them but that's all that's left for Hallelujah Land). At this point, I have three options on what to do:
1. Just keep going and translate everything, including Hallelujah Land and Cyber City (even with the possibility of scanslator's using them to create online stuff)
2. Skip ahead to Former Maruhage, which Viz will be getting to soon and try to get past them.
3. Skip ahead to the Maruhage Touranment/Reverse Maruhage to start approaching the non-animated part of the series.
My hunches say #1 but I want to see what others have to say on the matter.
I'm going with Number 1
I must admit that I´d like Number 3, but Number 1 is the best choice
Personally, I'd go with #3.
Thanks to the input for those who stated so far. The good news is I do have time before I get to that point but I just really wish I knew what would be best for the Bo-bobo fans and whatever community there is out there.
BTW: I'm on the final Dengaku Man chapter currently…doing research on various sticker promotions just because of some otaku character (with a lion face) is not fun, let me tell you that.
I'd say no.1 cause I want to read it from begining to end. I heard that viz left some stuff out.
I'd say no.1 cause I want to read it from begining to end. I heard that viz left some stuff out.
Essentially Viz started from Hallelujah Land…I started way back where the scanslations stopped (the transition between C-Block and A-Block) to finish filling in the gap before going forwards. However, at this moment here's where I stand:
-I just started the first chapter of vol. 7, which is the final chapter of Z-Block
-Up next is Hajike Block, which for all intensive purposes is 9 chapters. (5 of which is the Rice battle)
-Then comes OVER, which is 17 chapters, including what is pretty much the longest fight in the entire series against one character! (there is one fight that is slightly longer...but its against a group of characters)
So as it stands I have 27 chapters between where I am now and the start of Hallelujah Land, which a person can just get at a store. I want to do Hallelujah Land and Cyber City, but I don't really want Viz down my back for making scripts available that would lead to one less volume bought of their own versions.
@Tokoro:

Yea like jumping all the way to Volume 9 might've not have already done that.
@Sandai:
Yea like jumping all the way to Volume 9 might've not have already done that.
That was Viz's doing, as well as Sawai's stupidity for saying "that's where my good works begin". As I see it, many stuff he did prior to Hallelujah Land (including A-Block, Gunkan, OVER and even some of Z-Block and Hajike Block) are just as if not more classic than what he did from Hallelujah Land on. I may just translate it for completeness but I think I may just put a comment saying "support Bo-bobo by buying the volumes at the store" starting at that point.
@Tokoro:
That was Viz's doing.
That's why I mentioned it.
@Sandai:
That's why I mentioned it.
But here's what I don't get: other parts of the world get Bo-bobo volumes from 1 on…and Viz starts from Hallelujah Land, let alone forgets there are two chapters of Cyber City before where they're starting the next volume! Its like they're intentionally trying to prevent this from being bigger than their cashcows. (the ninja, the Shinigami, the "other" Shinigami with the psycho geniuses)
