I feel great confidence mainly from the fact that the people from FUNi actually know the show and don't think of it as a mere money fountain.

HE SPEAKS THEM IN ENGLISH!And since these travisties came from Mato I'm assuming they're not only going to be present in the dub, but they're also what will be shown in the subtitles as well.
Obviously, this cannot be allowed to happen.
FINALLY! Someone who understands!
Except….maybe swtich Gedatsu and Gan Fall's comments. Gedatz is WAAAY stranger and messed up than Gan Fall's dub name.

I have a question, if cigars must have the smoke edited out of them, how will Smoker's cigars be changed? Since his ability is to become smoke, after all, it would make sense for him to have smoke floating around himself.
On a side note, I'm pretty impressed that they've been able to keep the name 'Smoker', considering what the word means. Go Funi translators! :D
Though I've honestly never been a fan of any of Funimation's dubs, as a crazed fanatic of One Piece, any positive changes from the previous dub are bonus points for me. <3 Perhaps someday my friends at school will stop talking about how "Trace can beat Chaser" and all that nonsense.
-
Naruto is less violent than OP, for what it's worth. Violence isn't just people leaking blood - it can extend even to verbal bashes as well.
Agreed.
The thing with Naruto is the violence is really fantastical and over the top, people being hit with giant weapons, monster battles, fireballs, etc.
While in theory, all the fighting styles in OP(early on) could be done in real life. You could kick the crap out somebody, cut them with a katana, etc. Can you smash your clone into somebody's head? No. Can you put a bunch of blades inbetween your fingers and run at someone screaming BARA BARA HARPOON! Ofcourse. Not to mention..people get shot in One Piece…ALOT! Even if they don't die, there are tons of scenes of characters firing guns at each other and minor characters getting shot right through the chest with flintlocks. It's probably best Alubastar is done already, considering, even the FUni tv version would've probably had to be HEAVILY edited for CN.

Smoker probably could still have smoke floating around him, we just can't see that it comes directly from his cigars.
Smoker could refer to his powers. Even if it usually means "someone who smokes", they can get around that.

I disagree. No matter how edited the FUNi version of anything would be, we can probably assume it would be less edited than had 4kids done it. I see no advantage to having Alabasta already done by 4kids.
-

Alubastar? I hope that's not how you are expecting it to be spelled
Guess what dude, it already WAS heavily edited for CN by 4kids. It's as bad as it could possibly be. At least we would have had the orignal BGM and better acting with FUNi. -
Just out of curiosity… how did 4Kids deal with Kohza's various gunshot wounds? Not to mention Vivi's heartwrenching scream afterwards.
-

All they did was black out the screen when the gunshots hit him (but you can still hear 'em), but he was still shot.
Vivi's scream… well, it was about as good as she can ever get. Which isn't very good. ^_^;
-
He was shot by flaming arrows and crap.
Well, not crap. Just flaming arrows.
-
@Gerchak:
He was shot by flaming arrows and crap.
Well, not crap. Just flaming arrows.
Oh, yeah. The first time (when he opposes the fake-Cobra) he's shot by arrows. But the part where he flies the white flag, he's still shot by guns (but as I said, they black out the bullets hitting him, but you still hear the bullets).
-
I just hope the blood is not another color like 4 kids did(in Late alabasta episodes?)
Well, they could always just use tomatoes if blood is a problem.
-
raj is truly a visionary among men.
Why stop at tomatoes? They could use strawberry jelly.
Crocodile: How is it that you can hit me?
Luffy: I. . .fell into a vat of strawberry jelly. MMM I LOVES MAH JELLY!
-
Mato mentioned that blood and guns are both okay, just as long as it's not spurting blood.
-
Did I? I don't know, that's not my area of expertise so I don't think I would've said anything like that
-
I dunno, maybe it wasn't you, but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned.
-
I think you're thinking of Justin Cook's Interview
Speaking of which, Mato, could you pass along my undying love for all that is Justin Cook?
-
Mato, i just want to say that if you can't use God, I think the next best thing would be Kami. I know most Americans don't know what it means, but when you consider the context of the storyline and how Toonami viewers can make a connection to a certain "Dragonball" character if they figured it out, I think it would work. At the very least it doesn't have the risk of sounding cheesy like Master or perhaps Sky Lord, but then again my second choice would be Lord if they can't use God.
-
Eh…Kami would sound cheesy IMO. I've never been a fan of just leaving Japanese words in the dialogue when it's not necessary. Personally, I think Lord would be absolutely perfect, possibly even better than God.
-
@Gerchak:

Thanks.
And just in case some are baffled by tomato.
Although I guess they're only employed where rocks once were.
-
Mato mentioned that blood and guns are both okay, just as long as it's not spurting blood.
at least I know of one scene that will be edited.. but since its alabasta Arc.. no need to worry, I guess
got a question: will the thunder attacks still be in the Dub? or will that be considered too violent for CN?(example:when sanji and ussop get electrocuted)
-
It couldn't be too violent. Ms. New Year's Eve gets shocked by Nami's Thunder Tempest in the 4kids dub. They don't show the bolt hitting her (can't remember if that's in the original), but they show her getting electrocuted.
-
@mumbo230:

It would be ok if the TV version used Lord, but that sure isn't better than God. Especially if God is how Oda intended it. Plus all the awesome dialog having to do with it would be messed up. "What makes you Lord?!" just doesn't have the same impact.
Also are names like Miss Merry Christmas going to still have to be what 4Kids had them for the DVD? Because any name thats said in English having something completely different on the subs for it will look bad (like Point/Boost). Its the main thing I'm worried about when it comes to the subs. I mean any casual viewer whos never even seen KFs version watching the subs would notice it.
At least with Zoro/Zolo its possible to pretend their saying Zolo if you don't notice any of the times its printed out, don't get the original obvious reference to Zoro, and have never seen either the original anime or manga. >_>
-
If they don't use God, they'll use Lord.
As far as the "What makes you God?" comment, it'll probably get altered to something else.
-

Along with all the talk of praying to god and Zoro saying he doesn't believe in him, as well as everything else related to it.
-
They'll figure it out.
At least the Uncut DVD's will be fine.
-
And there's still a chance God will make it on Cartoon Network. After all, they're aiming for TV-PG.

I;ve heard the word goddess in a cartoon aired on that network..so yeah theres a chance it could happen
-

Goddess doesn't really carry the same weight as God in the heavily Christian culture of America, but you've got a good point.
-
Mato mentioned that blood and guns are both okay, just as long as it's not spurting blood.
I hope they make an exception for Zoro vs Mihawk.
You can't do it any other way, but to have the blood come spurting out.
-
But they aren't airing Zoro vs. Mihawk. They're starting at Jaya.
-
speaking of jaya,I cant wait to see the episode where the strawhats have to search for the southbird in the new Dub XD
-
Speaking of Zoro vs. Mihawk, I can't wait to see that dubbed. I'm actually curious as to how they'd handle that on Cartoon Network. It could work; they could just show some glowing-red liquid cascade past a black background. It's been done before.
-
I actually thought that Mark Diraison sounded pretty spot-on in that episode in the 4Kids dub to begin with…
-
Both series are violent in their own aspects.
Naruto = bloody
One Piece = ass kicky
I see more blood in One Piece, actually. The most disturbing things in Naruto that I recall was Sasuke's past and Itachi torturing Kakashi. They weren't all that bloody, just psychologically disturbing.
-
Last night's episode of the Naruto dub was a good example of that psychological disturbment.
The only thing I don't like is G. Zess, but I'm not going to fuss about it. Just as long as the dub doesn't have childish puns and super soakers, I won't complain.
-

I recall Kakashi killing Haku and Zabuza killing those mafia guys being extremely bloody. I thought I was watching AS once cuz I was suprised CN left it unedited for TV. I think Naruto has OP beat in the blood department, so OP should be fine as far as that goes.
-
I'm only a casual "Naruto", so I mostly just watch it on Cartoon Network whenever I can. Yes, "Naruto" does seem to have more disturbing moments, but in relation to what I've seen (I haven't seen/read all of "Naruto" like I have for "One Piece" so this may be biased), "One Piece" seems to have more sad moments. But the backstory of Sakura and that blonde girl whose name I can't remember at the moment's relationship was a pretty good tear-jerker. I really liked that episode.
So, do any of you guys think, at least as each new episode comes out each week, that this version FUNimation is doing will get noticeably better ratings in comparison to the 4Kids episodes?
-
I never got to finish reading the article due to the internet crashing, but did it mention if Alcohol was going to be censored or not?

Honestly, I think the rating will be reletively the same (maybe slightly higher). I mainly think that due to the influence of the 4kids dub. It'll take a sec to wash the bad taste out, unless of course CN goes on a "Naruto style" marketing scheme for the new One Piece dub.
Although, I think around the end of Skypiea, we might see a pretty nice surge in ratings. But I think most of the Funi dub's success will come from the DVDs tho instead of the TV.
-

If you're referring to the Sanji v. Mr. 2 fight, K-F actually added in the blood to that scene to make it look more realistic, since they originally were just vomiting SPIT. Vomiting blood just seems much more realistic.
But they aren't airing Zoro vs. Mihawk. They're starting at Jaya.
You never know, when they go back to re dub that, they may create a TV edited version to eventually replace the old 4kids dub like they did with the old DBZ episodes.

not that scene…. the one where luffy is holding his side and there is blood gushing from a wound and he falls to the ground for a second( dont remember what episode it was)

Hey, I got a question, since I'm not really that familiar with the dubbing process. How long does it typically take, assuming all goes well?
Also, assuming all goes well when would one guess that Funi starts dubbing the episodes before Jaya? Maybe at the end of Skypiea or Enies Lobby? I mean, they'd have to take a break from dubbing newer episodes wouldn't they?
-

Is that true about K-F? I don't remember hearing about that.
-
Yea, they did it cause it was cool. Or close to the original, I dunno.
They also edited the map where it said "ALABASTA KING DOM"
I think to make kingdom one word again.
-
Is that true about K-F? I don't remember hearing about that.
Apparently, it was a long time ago. I don't think they'll be doing anything like that again…
