It's definitely interesting, I like the fact that it isn't trying to play straight, so to speak. Just acknowledge that there will be some elements of mysticism or magic or whatever, keep it fairly subdued, and move on. Gives the villain's 'inhumanness' or whatever some interesting potential depth too.
The Elusive Samurai
-
-
The villains in this really are super-sadists:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009447And may I note that while he is wearing armor, he's not that well-covered.
-
Hedonism is bad, folks:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009448And this chapter addresses two things I always found so simple yet so profound. 1. Armor covers you, but it slows you down (as any RPGer knows), and 2. If a guy is using a weapon you can't get around, take down the weapon.
-
Good chapter, decent action, not much more to say I guess.
-
This is no fight between honorable samurai. Use low blows when you want:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009449I'm a little confused on how the kid was fighting other than dashing around a lot.
-

Hojo landed only one hit, when he evaded that one slash and used that Elusive Sword technique. After that Hojo let his enemy just bleed out, evading his attacks and not giving him a break to stop the bleeding
-
Dammit, that fucking bandit is still alive?
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009605Great fourth wall joke at the end, though.
-
This was a funny chapter. They usually are when Yorishige is involved:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009606Also, ascension? If this dude is trying for buddha-hood I don't think he's going the right way about it.
-
"I shall master the ways of war and perversion"
-
Yeah, that guy's not Buddhist even if he thinks he is:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009607I'm also noticing a subtle "Buddhism vs. Shintoism" thread here, at least in which Ashikaga and his cronies have all these Buddhist symbols, and Yorishige and Takayuki appear to be Shinto.
-
I didn't really get the Buddha part? Why exactly did the brother want to burn the drawing?
-
I understood it as Takauji drew the Buddha and the monster but for some reason only focuses on the former. His brother is aware that he's becoming kinda weird, hence Tadayoshi's anxious reaction when Takauji told him he drew another one. And Tadayoshi also tries to cover it up so as not to weird out their followers
-
So that's what's happening! Thank you very much for the explanation. Didn't get this at all.^^'
-
I didn't get what happened at the end with the priest. Was that a doll he was talking to the whole time?
-
Last chapter, the other kids thought MC was a pervert because he was gathering the ropes, doll, aphrodisiac, etc. So as retribution, the priest was set up as to appear that he's the pervert, in order to clean MC's reputation.
-
So appears another nasty enemy who you just want to punch in the face:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009702But also more funnies.
-
So I'd like to give an advance vote for Gentle face guard dude for the obligatory character poll (whenever it comes out).
-
Bland-faced guy gets the best lines:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009703I also feel like this is a chapter that addresses the old samurai bushido philosophies. "Better to die honorably on the field of battle", or "better to take your life than be captured in shame". Stuff that sounds cool in old legends, but in real life is pretty awful.
-
Bland faced guy is hilarious. XD
And I really like how this chapter is making me smile at the suicidal tendencies of the characters only to make me go "wait, that's messed up"
-
Once again Bland-faced Guy gets the best line:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009704And Tokiyuki solidly took down the Way of the Samurai in one go.
-
New chapter is out!
That scene with phallic-head dude made laugh out loud
-
It's not just the Bland-Faced Guy, the whole clan has great faces
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009705 -
I know that that they are nit complex written characters with a lot of depth to them but damn do I enjoy seeing bland faced guy and the rest.
-
Maybe if we're lucky they'll join the gang at Suwa as background characters so we can keep seeing them.
-
A lesson in how mounted warfare works:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009859 -
It is very handy when the commander of your enemy troops is an idiot:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009860And once again, Bland-Faced Guy is the best part.
-
And once again, Bland-Faced Guy is the best part.
At this point I'm not even sure that the mangaka keeps including the bland faced guy as planned or because he's popular. I never expected to see him this often but damn am I always happy to see him. This guy better end up high if there's ever a character poll.^^
-
Hey, a set of villains who don't piss me off:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009862But no Bland-faced Guy. T_T
-
A never-ending stream of creepy adults:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010049 -
A battle of wits can be just as fun as a battle of swords:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010050 -
I believe the premise is boring, but matsui is doing wonders with the art, presentation, characters and everything except the creepy priest.
-
The creepy priest is the biggest weakness in the manga. Him being so prominent at the start probably hurt the manga's popularity, which is probably why he barely appears anymore. On the subject being boring, Matsui turned midterm exams into boss fights in Ass Class, he can easily make historical non fiction interesting.
-
What a waste of a perfectly good drum:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010051 -
I can only respond one way to this chapter, and that's EEEEEEEK!!!!!
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010052 -
I can only respond one way to this chapter, and that's EEEEEEEK!!!!!
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010052That's a pretty accurate way of putting things. That were some really creepy images. I've been enjoying this series more and more. If there's anything I don't like it's that we don't see plain face guy anymore. :(
-
Who knew a man's virginity could be so powerful?
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010528 -
Isn't that same rules for becoming a wizard? Or was ot age 40?
-
Yeah, it's probably a reference to that (30 years for a wizard).
-
Yeah, bland face guy cameo. Instant 10/10 chapter!
-
I mean, they do say that boxers and MMA fighters should abstain from sex and other physical entertainment before their fights . . .
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010529But whatever, Bland-Faced guy!
-
But whatever, Bland-Faced guy!
At this I'm not even joking anymore when I say he's the best character in this series. It's alwaya a treat to see him and his antics XD
-
Now would be a really good time to run away:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010530No Bland-Faced Guy. T_T
-
Yorishige is Tuxedo Mask!
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1010531. . . and eats shawarma?
-
That shawarma bit got me completely by surprise
-
"This is the threat of a noble with no battle experience!"
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1011948And oh no, not this dickhead again.
-
Ant-Guy is so annoying.
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1011949But strategy is strategy.
-
Been a while, but here's the latest chapter:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1012747Tokiyuki's uncle is probably the funniest character after Bland-Faced Guy. And if you think his "quirk" is weird, back in ye olde Japan "face reading" was considered a talent that could tell you things about a person. Only in this case the face has actual letters on it.
-
Yay, Kyoto!
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1012811I lived in Kyoto, so seeing Kiyomizudera and the like brings a smile on my face. Even if poor Kiyomizudera is getting crackpot worshipers.
-
It went from cute and funny to "ewwww . . ."
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1012785
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1012814An interesting look into the nobility during the shogunate.
-
I love this weird crypto-horror shit, something dark and supernatural seething at the liminal spaces of a story, peeking through the timbers of its structure. It almost reminds me of what I wanted that first season of True Detective to turn into, just a slow but irreversible descent into Lovecraftian horror. It didn't happen there, but it could here.
I can wait forever, author, take your time.
Maybe I should reread Neuro.
