You know, I used to not be terrifically impressed with the idea of someone who uses rope as a main weapon, but I've been watching a lot of Asian action/horror movies lately and there's a HK movie called "The Vampire Effect" that has some really neat rope-fu sequences that have totally opened me up to the possibilities of this weapon. It's pretty versatile if you get someone who knows that they're doing, and as Konis pointed out, this is Oda we're talking about here, let's give the guy a chance. How many people wondered how boring Sanji's fighting style would be if all he could do was kick, and yet he keeps coming up with ways to knock us out of our seats. I wouldn't count Paulie out just yet.

And for the record, I love Franky and would love it if he joined up. Honestly, I don't think he will, but it'd still be fun. ^^

There's a guy in Steel Ball Run who uses ropes too, and I think he was Tom by the name too. Anyway, I like the idea and I hope it won't get buried as quickly as dozens of other abilites and skills in One Piece.

I think it's okey not to like a character appearance, and employ it in a debate, it's not like I like every singe chaharcters appearances either (usually the opposite).

Another thing that bothers me about Paulie (but shouldnt really be a basis if he joines or not), he is very similar to Sanji in appearance and the polar opposite in his perspective of woman. But you know…XD

I have complete faith in Oda. Even though I think Franky can join and want him to, I don't care if he does. It's never been my story, so I'm fine with how it goes.

Hey, for all any of us know, the guy can rope lightning bolts and bring 'em down. But so far, he hasn't done anything impressive, so I think I have a right to be unimpressed. I'm not even gonna eat my words when he does something cool, because I do believe he has a ton of potential, but right now, I don't feel that's enough.

The rope attacks are the same as Kahlua(Hunter X Hunter,probably spelled it wrong) chain attacks.I never thought the chain attacks were very boring at all.Other uses for a rope.

-He could wrap them around his opponent and then pull it spinning them around,then he could punch in the opposite direction that would hurt pretty bad.

-He could take there weapon away from them if need be.

-He could wrap you up and then light them on fire so you get burned.

See there are other possible things then just the basic grab and throw.

While i can understand most of the pro-Pauley arguments, the point that Franky is too unusual seems like an incredibly bad point to me. This is ODA. In the same way that people expect Pauley to do some impressive stuff with his ropes, you're acknowledging the creativity and love for the unusual that Oda has always shown in his work. In fact, Franky's strangeness would leave so much more potential for strange attacks and talents. He seems liable to pull a power out of thin air (like, say, magnetic laser beams from his nose) for Oda to play with later. Pauley using ropes and carpentry, while they CAN be used for much more, really wouldn't give him as much creative range as Franky would. Besides, I have no doubt that Franky could generate ropes (or at least chains) from him if he needed to.

My main point here, though, is that I insist that Franky being so strange (but likable) makes him all the more likely to join the crew. My main support for this reason: Chopper.

Chopper is a shapeshifting, blue-nosed reindeer who's also a pirate doctor. It almost makes Franky seem kind of plain considering that he's a dancing cybrog scrap-dealer. Is he seriously so strange in perspective, i ask you?

goggleskei, his name is kurapica not kahlua :P and yes i love his chains! however chains and ropes r different… chains r metal, therefore 10000x stronger than rope. if u light them on fire u will burn ur rope = no weapon for poor old paulie :( as for ur other ideas thats pretty cool, either way i really wouldnt mind either of them joining the crew, but i just think franky would lighten up the crew even more with more stupiditiy!

I'm a Franky fan/supporter, but I don't think Paulie's use of rope attacks is a viable reason to use for dismissing him as a possible crew member. For instance, he could:

• depending on how lax Oda is with the word "rope", use steel ropes (wires) or apply steel to the ropes in the future. this applies to all other sorts of weird materials and stuff (i.e. vine with thorns like Calipha's whip, sticky glue, etc., etc.)
• attach objects to the ropes to create new attacks (i.e. add a wooden cylinder to the ends to make a really long nunchaku, flammable material to the end and light it on fire, boomerangs on the ends, dials, sharp objects, blunt objects, etc., etc.)
• using comic/manga logic, he could create shields/defences if the ropes used were made of a hard material and he spun them at a fast enough speed to form a shield
• pass electricity through the rope if it were made of conductive material

For me, the only things going against Franky and Paulie joining are some aspects of their looks:

• Franky has baby blue hair. Vivi had baby blue hair, so if Franky joins and she were to return, it would stop the distinct rainbow hair/top (bandanna for Usopp) colour scheme of each of the Strawhats (I know Luffy, Usopp, and Robin all have black hair, but Usopp wears a brownish yellow bandanna and Robin has greenish-purple highlights in her hair). Also, Franky's sea-water panties may be too risque and out of place (I've gotten use to them though and now think they won't be a problem [he wore shorts in the flashback too], but I can see this as a valid point).
• Paulie's look borrows some features from other characters (flame sleeves from Ace, cigarette from Smoker, hair colour is similar to Sanji's)

Strangely, Iceburg's light purple hair seems a nicer fit for the Strawhats IMHO!

Wouldn't it be funny if Franky and Paulie, both moved by the Straw Hats in rescuing Robin, wanted to join the crew? And then Luffy's like, "We only need one shipwright!" Then Franky and Paulie duke it out. Franky wins and joins, and Paulie sneaks aboard anyway….

Yeah, it probably won't happen, but it COULD!

I agree wholeheartadly. Over the month´s I´ve brought so many arguments in on why Franky will join but this one I´ve never mentioned because it is the most silly but in the end it turns out to be the ultimate one…Franky is a freaking CYBORG!!! Maybe the only one we will see in One Piece. Paulie is just a random dude with ropes compared to him. The cyborg however is unique in the entire world. If not all the other things that make it obvious that he will join the fact that he´s out so unique in this term should actually perfectly qualify to make him a Strawhat.

The problem with Pauly(or at least his character design) is that he has a weak silhouette when juxtaposed with the silhouettes the strawhats. He's sort of an inbetween of Sanji and Zoro and this is a big character design no-no. Franky doesn't have this problem his silhouette is strong and is very differentiated from the others meaning there is no chance of confusing him for anyone else in irregular situations.

luffy1piece that is true however all characters r meant to b differentiated from each other. i wouldnt say that franky's silhouette is more appropriate with luffy's crew but i think his personality fits in more with the crew. pauly is pauly and franky is franky. i dont think oda tried to make in-betweens of characters but more liketrying to make every character individual. lufy has not yet properly met franky or pauly, and so far luffy has bonded more with pauly because they were trapped together in the same room by kaku. all this talk makes u wonder even more whos going to be joining :D

Luffy will choose Franky. He likes something unique. Remember first time when he saw Chopper's transformation? When Luffy see Franky's Centeur, he will be very surprised and love it. Luffy already all or most of Paulie's moves but nothing surprised him. Plus, Franky can play music as well which is something Luffy really loves.

I think Luffy already forgave Franky for what Franky did. That's why Luffy told Franky family that now they are allies.

I think Franky will join, because Pauly is the student of Iceburg, and wouldn't HE want to rebuild Galley-La? Wouldn't HE want to continue Iceburg-San's legacy? I mean, he seems to have more feelings towards Iceburg than Franky to his family, Franky kinda just got mad, and Pauly for furious compared to that. He's already one of the Galley-La and I can see him being the boss of Galley-La and W7. Why? Because he's Iceburg's student! I don't want another one of those Chopper things comin up….... Also other people's comments, it seems there ARE more reasons for Franky. I really really really think Pauly will continue Iceburg's legacy in W7 because Volume 36, page 178 and 179! Also I confess I would like Franky to join but I'm not making that the base of my reasons. Pauly is living his dream thanks to Iceburg. Franky Family served under Franky and they're now showing bonds to Galley-La. He's old, but he's immature and that makes it even. :P I highly doubt that he will just make a ship for the SHs and just stay in W7, he has made CP9 his enemy, and they know his location. Who would want to stay there, even though its a hometown? Also I don't think he would want the same fate as Tom, so he would go with them. For Pauly, I see more reasons staying at W7 instead of going off with Pirates. Of course he has made CP9 HIS ENEMY TOO, but I think he'll stay like Iceburg did. I'll be kinda dissapointed if Pauly joined, I won't want to leave such a great character. I have never seen a free to take charcter that is as great as him in this arc. Imagine if they just get the bunny in disguise as a cat :D

Franky kickass.. how much damage can you do with ropes anyway? Luffy and Sanji can crush stones with ease, Zorro can cut trough steel. How hard would it be for them to rip a roap?

Well, if you look, when Paulie was pissed at Lucci for sending an attack at Iceburg, he put knives on his rope heroicly and with all his furiosity, and got defeated. Not much to Lucci, but at least he can do something else than grab something with ropes and throw them. :P

That's one of the cool possibilities about Paulie - he can potentially use whatever is in his surroundings to attack.

I don't know, I really liked the addition of Robin, because she's quiet, smart and mature - traits the Luffy crew needed more of. I'm not sure I feel that way about speedos and flamoyance (actually I'm sure I don't)…..but all we can do is trust in the ways of Oda.

Franky just doesnt fit into the crew in my opinion. He is too wierd. Not that that is a bad thing, but he isnt the type of person to join. His connections to water 7 and the franky's is too strong for him to leave. Plus he is…just too wierd! I mean come on! speedos? Who wants to see that every chapter?...besides all the people who want franky to join...regardless, i feel he is too random and sparatic and destructive...one might argue that luffy is too, but he is the captain. We already have comic relief in the form of Ussop/luffy combo. We dont need another freaken weirdo. Plus, I dont even think he is that strong. I think that individually luffy, soro, and sanji could beat him if they needed to. Plus, can you really see luffy and his crew cruising along the grand line in a freaken battleship? I cant. They belong in an good old wooden ship. Not a weapon of mass destruction.

Pauly, on the other hand, fits perfectly. He is in debt, constantly in trouble, but never acts as eccentric as our pal franky. As mentionedbefore by MANY others, he and Sanji have a wonderful contrast of character. I think that the crew needs a "noble" character. One to keep Sanji in check. And also, we dont know alot about him! That leaves all kinds of space for further character development. He has no ties to water 7, other than the Galley La of course, but I think that he would leave water 7 and the galley la if luffy proves himself a worthy captain...and we all know he will. I bet that we get to see some wicked pauly action in the near future.

But...as you all know, the mere fact that we all suspect pauly and franky as potential crew members can almost rule them out as potential crew members! Oda will find a way to surprise us all. I, for one, cannot wait for the end of this arc. It has been the best yet, and isnt slowing down.

But my main hang up with it is, that any real enemy worth his/her/its salt could break & or maneuver/escape from those ropes, not just useless jobbers like the Frankies, who are easy beats. ;)

Also, Pauly doesn't really seem to have much of a defense. I mean, he's offense is best over long distances with his skill with the ropes, but if an enemy with a lot of pace got in close, I think he'd struggle big time, Lucci's already shown that. Plus, what can he fall back on when all the rope's gone, shredded up and unusable? Sanji will fight until his legs break, Zoro until his swords shatter & I'd think Luffy until he passed out or died. So.. what of Pauly? Surely… those ropes don't go on forever?! :P

On a side note, I thought of a possible situation which could lead to Paulie joining, which has to deal with his connection to Water Seven…

Well, he can always take his Hitch Pipe knives in his hands… Though I think he could have some cool rope blocking attacks.. maybe something like Waanzes ramen kenpo.. :o.. but it is unfair to say that he can block after he got hit by Lucci.. Lucci was fast, he striked pauley before the rope even touched the ground.. And Luffy didnt even see him when Lucci Shiguned him in his neck..

You honestly think the ropes don't go forever? =D Has Chopper ever run out of rumbleballs? Is Usopp ever out of ammo? =)

… and if he ever did run out of rope.. which I don't think is even possible in Oda world... we'd be treated to a spider-man moment!

As for defense... well, that's just something he'd be able to develop over time. =) What fun is it if a character is totally awesome right out of the gate? The Straw Hats become more powerful as they progress... both Sanji and Zoro have improved drastically over time.

Oh, and Chopper and Usopp are seen working on those kinds of things. We'd have to see Pauly make ropes or something then.

Oh, and before anyone nitpicks, I´m quite aware that Wanze used noodles and not ropes, but as long as Oda doesn´t tell us that Paulie is using steel ropes I don´t see much difference between them and Wanze´s ramen other than that Paulie´s ropes probably aren´t that sticky. :lol:

Ya, it had good defense against non sharped objects. :P And if Pauley fights against a sword guy, then he just have to avoid his attacks, just like Sanji would do. And maybe he can block some attacks with his knives.

Exactly what I was aiming for. It was the ramen suit. And so far we haven´t seen that Paulie is able to pull the same thing. But I´m sure that you´ll say the same thing that you say always "Have a little faith in Oda. Paulie will shortly show us his true worth" or something like that. Well it´s been over fifty chapters already and I haven´t seen Paulie grow much while Franky seems to be growing more with each new chapter.

And Robin didn't grow much until she flat-out joined the crew.

There might not be enough room to have Franky AND Paulie experience the same growth, at least not without extending this arc even further; and let's face it, people are getting impatient as it is. So Oda chooses to showcase Franky's character growth, as this'll be his only chance to do so, seeing as how Franky won't be joining and Paulie will.
