Oh no, there goes Tokyo. It's a Godzilla thread!

Just got back from seeing Godzilla Minus One, which is my first time ever seeing a proper Japanese Godzilla movie in theaters. And yeah, it's pretty friggin' great. Maybe the best Godzilla movie to date.
The human element of the movie is just fantastic. And it pretty much has to as it makes up the vast majority of the movie. Godzilla himself is used pretty sparingly, but when he is, he's genuinely impressive and terrifying.
Regarding the ending...
-
I saw the movie yesterday spontaneously and didn't know anything about it beforehand, the setting or how Godzilla would look. And i didn't expect it to be THIS good.
I'm not used to actually be interested in the human drama in Godzilla movies so i had no expectations, but they connected the monster part so well with the with the story and themes! And when Godzilla appeared... oh boy, was it fun to watch. He's just a monster. The scene of him demolishing the warship might be one of my favourite scenes of any Godzilla movie ever, it was soo well shot.I was shocked to learn they only had a 15 million dollar budget, which may explain the smaller scale. But it's really impressive, the movie definitely does not like it at all.
My girlfriend saw it with me and it was her first ever exposure to any kaiju movie and she really enjoyed it too. Although i don't know what i would show her next... Shin Godzilla maybe.
Also, fun fact ... We had to watch the german dub, since the japanese version was shown only at 11 pm, and the main character had Luffy's german VA. -
Saw the movie myself, after seeing both very positive reactions in general. Went in knowing nothing about it outside the very first teaser presented whenever that was. Fantastic movie all around. The story of the main character and the themes presented with the human characters were really well done, with the final act hitting so hard in so many different ways. The biggest shock to me was just how brutal everything Godzilla itself was. First appearance was already impactful, but that second appearance was on a whole different scale. The end of that section left me in shock, that's how well it was done for me.
Going into major spoiler thoughts

I like the idea that people are hung up on them running on the end of the trailer instead of slow walking.

Having seen both versions, I actually liked Minus Color better and I already loved Minus One to begin with.
Oh, I guess I never reviewed it when it came out. So, here goes:
-
The fact that they made you actually care about the human characters in minus one is great
Something four monsterverse movies couldn’t accomplish
-
Which is weird since unless I’m mistaken even the Japanese Godzilla films have seldom ever been able to make people care about the human characters unless that’s the perception among non Japanese Godzilla fans.

Clip of the Godzilla Minus One VFX team reacting to their Oscar nom.
-
Aside from winning the Best Visual Effects at the Oscars, Godzilla Minus One also won Picture of the Year at the Japan Academy Film Prize (i.e. Japanese Academy Awards). So yeah, I'd say it cleaned up pretty nicely.

Is Scar King from something or is he a totally new character
-
Anyone seeing the new movie anytime soon?
-
I'm going this evening. It's a fun popcorn film; more of a Kong film with special guest Godzilla, which isn't a bad thing since Kong actually has fairly nice character moments. Scar is a pretty neat villain, the film doesn't take itself too seriously, and Godzilla gets a comfy cat bed for his trouble.

This post is deleted!

I saw it just recently too
Basically I loved all the monster fights, but everything else with the humans was boring and not very interesting
I found myself just saying “Just let them fight”
-
Looks like the film had a huge opening weekend at around $194 million so we can safely assume there will be more Monsterverse films. The budget was apparently $135 million so the box office is already at nearly 150% of that.
-
I’m shocked the budget was that low high but still somewhat low.
-
A lot of the savings probably came from not running the film through fifty layers of darkness filters like Godzilla and Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
-
Lol .
