The Storm before the calm is coming to an end.
Given my schedule I should be in bed instead of staying up watching my pirate cartoon but what can you do?
Won't say much at the moment other than that was really nice. Ito didn't really expand ''much'' on Kaido's flashback compared to what was in the manga (much like when he did the bit of Roger at Laugh Tale) but just giving the material room to breathe instead of cramming it into small, cluttered panels elevated what was there so much and made it feel like that much less of an afterthought. Not to mention the direction and animation did so much for it; I'm not surprised that Chansard got to draw a lot of Kaido's younger selves. Out of all the animators who handled the character during this long arc he really owned that design and all of its forms.
So ultimately it wasn't Shida who handled the finishing blow but Tu. No surprise there really, lol. Most of the big regular names popped up here and there throughout the episode - Shida, Tomita, Thurlow, Chansard, and Tu, etc. - but there were still a few surprises like Toshiyuki Sato (big-name freelancer who's all over the place) and a couple Studio Pierrot Naruto team regulars, probably thanks to Thurlow, - Masayuki Kouda, jay1jay1jay1, and Chengxi Huang. I suppose they could use the work now that the Naruto/Boruto anime has finally been put out to pasture!
Anime team did the best they could, but the finisher in the manga did not feel like a proper ending to a story arc that started 10 years ago, and neither did it feel that way in the anime.
Nevertheless, last 3 episodes were amazing and overall a better experience than the manga.
Honestly it's super weird seeing a short title like that; it feels like half of it is missing lol. I can't recall if this is the first time it's ever broken that format...

This is a good summary. The animation is amazing, and it does elevate the original material but it still doesn't change that this was one big punch that, thanks to haki doesn't even follow normal punch physics. Seeing a man fall to a punch that was standing still for minutes doesn't have the same impact as a normal punch. Also, this is my problem since the manga, but seeing a spiral dragon breaking through the seabed (or lake bed?) is weird.
That said, seeing Luffy floating the the air after his victory, with those lanterns rising into the sky was a beautiful sight. Really, despite that complaint there's a lot of nice little moment in this thing.
This is rare. I don't think Toei ever held themselves back that much when it comes to chapter titles.
Anyway, I don't have much to add that everyone has already said. The lanterns rising into the sky scene was beautiful and a work of art.
The anime has significantly elevated the enjoyment of these past few chapters and deserves a standing ovation for turning what was 2 chapters, where a lot of people were complaining, into a neatly paced, beautifully animated, and well-directed climax. I've always been a huge critic for the anime after time skip and that Fishman and Dressrosa were horrendous and actually made the source material worse.
I can't say the same for Onigashima and Wano, less maybe the pacing(but that's really, really hard to fault them at this point).
There's a lot of love put into adapting what was a few short panels and you can see that in the directing and the cinematography that has no deliberate reason to be that good. I'm also talking about 1075 which really puts the source material to shame. Controversial take, I know but the anime's stance on 1075 and their way of delivering it is far superior than how Oda handled it.
Overall, I just want to say it has been really fucking great to watch. Like "Oh right, I was born in the age where One Piece exist and I'm grateful" level of great.

I loved the episode (The only downside was the "Pushing wars final attack" I had thought we would leave behind) but this sends a dangerous precedent, While I know most of this was in the manga this episode shows Oda is leaving more and more vital things up to the anime. Such as Making the backstory of an arc villain that was hyped for the better part of a decade compelling to the audience. I still remember how dissapointed everyone was with this part in the manga.
I loved this episode, but again, this is the anime picking up the slack where Oda misfired.
Watching this episode has been like opening again a closed wound. Kaido's battle end has been the most disappointing one of the whole manga, imho. Not only it not landed a proper climax for a ten-years old (or four if we like to only count Wano), but it is a total narrative misfire. This has been argued plenty before, but there've been a lot of points where Oda decided to level up this battle and this basically lead to a too high summit to get down from without wrecking. Choosing to end the fight with an iper-mega-punch with a really short philosophy exchange, not even starting talking how we got the final blow split in two by Orochi's defeat, is such a letdown I can't really accept it. Even less than retconned Super Saiyan Luffy, which indeed I ended up loving thanks to its goofy sides.

Anyhow, I think this was Satoshi Ito's best episode in the whole series by far, no complaints whatsoever. It's such a fitting full-circle moment for the person who directed Kaido's introduction all the way back in 739 to also direct his eventual downfall. The way he handled the flashback was so freaking awesome; it was a mini movie on its own! Amazing direction and cinematic storyboard paired with some wonderful compositing. Vincent Chansard has been the animator who left his mark on Kaido the most, and him coming back to his beloved character as he goes through all stages of his life is a poetic farewell indeed.
Tu Yong-Ce has been the absolute MVP of this arc, and no one deserved to deliver that final blow of the raid more than him, which may very well be his best scene at that!
I also loved how Luffy started laughing by the end, mirroring Roger's iconic laugh and making Zoro and Sanji's remarks take the shape of reality, that we'll get a glimpse of Luffy as the king of the Pirates once the battle is over. I'll forever love this addition, brilliant move by Ito!
Honestly Luffy being surrounded by the sky boat lanterns after defeating Kaido was an image that I had figured Oda was planning ever since the things were introduced and I was quite surprised that he didn't go for it in the end. Satoshi Ito may not be as flashy as a director as say, Ishitani or Koyama, but he's been doing good work ever since he handled Senor Pink's backstory and this episode proves that the show is in good hands going forward (context: Ito has been the "head" series director for a number of months now; Nagamine is still one of them currently, but not the main one).
