No, no—it was Usopp who beat the ship out of Luffy.

RE: 1073: "No Escape! Onigashima, a Picture of Hell"
Oof. This episode suffered. Six minutes of recap, including the giant Luffy cut being shown twice within those six minutes. Two minutes or so of fresh G5, and the rest of the episode weaker content that was dragged out a bit. Next week is a recap. Whew. Bit if a roller coaster lately. Expected and reasonable with a weekly show, but still a bummer.
Also, I just realized it’s too late in the arc to do another theme song with Wano images. If they debut one at the end of the arc, it’ll be mostly Egghead. But honestly I’m kind of hoping they just wait a bit and give us the new theme song when Egghesd starts—have it be all Egghead imagery.

RE: 1096: "Forbidden History! A Theory About a Kingdom"
Man, One Pace is super necessary for this episode. I loved originally how Shaka reveals that the scholars saved their lives’ work by throwing the books into the lake, which causes Robin to cry. But this shitty episode stuck a flashback scene right in between the reveal and Robin crying, which made it look like she was crying for the flashback scene, not the poignancy of the passionate scholars dying to protect their work.

Already through the Whole Cake episodes. Man, that was fast.
My One Piece rewatch with my fiance just reached post-Marineford. We're at the flashback to Luffy, Ace, and Sabo's childhoods. We're watching on FUNimation's site (well, the TV app), and once the opening changed to "We Fight Together", the video quality seemed to take a nose dive. It's very noticeable when the English text is placed on the screen. The newer episodes seem fine, so I guess it was just something with these particular episodes?
I did this with my then-girlfriend like ten years ago and we still watch the dub together weekly to this day, now married. Have fun! She(?)’s a keeper if she watches all of it with you, lol.
Man, watching episode1015 makes me so excited to hear Kaido in English. The Wano arc is going to be very cool dubbed. I just hope they can slow down the production a little by then to boost back up the quality. I’ve been a little disappointed by the direction lately for the dub, particularly the sound engineering.

Japan Travel for One Piece Fans
Hey! I’ve been doing some research since I’m heading to Japan for a trip soon. Here are things for future travelers looking to do One Piece related events in Japan! These are events and places that aren’t limited events (which usually occur in the summer months).
- Mugiwara Stores. Several of these throughout the country. They’re basically Disney stores, except for One Piece.
- Jump Stores. These have merch from all the Shonen jump properties.
- Kumamoto Statues. In Kumamoto, there are big gold statues of each of the straw hats spread around the city.
- Toei Animation Museum.
- For Figures: Tokyo's Nakano Broadway & Akihabara, particularly Akiba Culture Zone & Radio Kaikan.
There used to be a real life Thousand Sunny, but I think it’s not operational anymore. Same for the One Piece Tower theme park in Tokyo. Do you guys have any other places to add to this list for myself and future travelers?

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
Lord of the coast definitely looks a little animated, but not too bad. I still really like it. Luffy’s fighting needs to be fast, and the arm needs to be elastic, have a really quick and satisfying snap when it moves. Left life-like, more rubber band.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah, I just finished it too. Really distracting that Jimbei sounds weird, and I continually don’t like how none of the character voices have any base. But that last episode was exciting. Awesome that we’re at the halfway point, and it was cool to meet Morgans and Katakuri in the dub.

RE: 1042: ''The Predator's Trap - Black Maria's Temptation''
Crazy how Franky got a six minute fight, but Robin and Brook are getting like two or three episodes for theirs. That Franky fight happened way too fast. A non-manga viewer probably wondered if that was even the end of it.

@Blake-Bakes-Cakes I remember when I caught up to the anime it was at about episode 240. The dub ever covering anything beyond Skypiea seemed like a pipe dream for the longest time, especially after it was originally taken off Toonami and when the DVD releases just stopped after season 3 with no word from Funimation.
I'm glad we've made it this far.
Don’t remind me of these days. Waiting for Water 7 dub was a nightmare. Two years, I think. Then another two or three years after FI.

RE: 1049: "Luffy Soars! Revenge On the Beast"
Man, that last sequence was incredible. Also nice to see they updated the 3D models & motion. Momo’s flight was real smooth.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah, ADR Director and probably most of the actors being retooled for Mob is very upsetting for me, too. It's my favorite still-running anime (besides OP), and I always say it's one of my top five non-OP anime. I think the recast that'll really kill me is Reigen, though. That actor was so perfect for the role; I can't imagine the show without him. Mob's actor was always great, too, but to me it feels easier to emulate Mob's monotone acting than Reigen.

RE: 1051: "The Legend Returns! Luffy's Fist Roars Through the Heavens"

RE: 1062: ''The Conqueror's Three-Sword Style! Zoro vs. King''
In Japan, last episode I’m watching before leaving the country. And boy, that was one of the best overall animated episodes we’ve ever seen, even more insanely animated minute-by-minute than the Sanji episode. The final attack is up there with the Akihito Ota bit from last week, too. Early episode storyboard is very up close, middle storyboard feels very reminiscent of the Zoro v Killer fight, and the ending is so insane that those folk who don’t want OP to be as flashy as DBZ are going to rear their ugly heads once again. The background animations are on fire this episode. It’s a visual feast, and flashing back to MiHawk era to show Zoro’s changes at the end is especially a nice touch. There are also really really fast, messy frames of King/Zoro as a child when they launch an attack toward the end, similar to the Yamato one that we’ve all seen a million times. And pay attention even after the final attack; Zoro jumping back onto Onigashima has some gorgeous background animation too.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I agree generally that some folks here flame anyone who lodges valid or arguable criticisms; I definitely feel like I’ve gotten some of that over the past two years, though not much before that. That’s a valid thought you feel, I think. But your antagonistic tone and stubborn reluctance to admit gains and success makes debating with you exhausting for everyone. It’s relentless pessimism, and I worry that that will carry into your own life and make you a very unhappy person. Being “against the grain” isn’t good in and of itself, and that’s a childish binary to hold.
I also agree that someone who spent years flaming and attacking people shouldn’t get immediate respect and forgiveness when they come back slightly toned down. Dude, the sins of your past aren’t easy to overlook for people who were subjected to it, and your outlook and rhetorical strategy hasn’t changed despite your tone being slightly better. We’re not circle-jerking positivity here. Something positive has happened, so we’re excited about it. I’m sorry you’re not pleased by nearly ten million dollars at the box office for a previously failing property. It’s objectively a great improvement. Your expectations are set way, way too high, and your language “OP shits the bed again” and using all caps to insult the franchises’ modest success and gain is exhausting for everyone here.
I’m not at the point of blocking you yet. But I’m tired of this discussion now. Take the rest up with a therapist, mate.

RE: 1066: ''The Main Attraction Begins! Powerful Shockwave and Magnetic Attacks''
Really don’t love the decision to put off-model fan art in the show. Not to mention what a different drawing style those shots were. I’m really surprised Toei let him get away with that.
Overall a strong episode. Not as strong as Sanji or Zoro, though.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Dude, people are frustrated with you because of your lack of balance. You’re stoutly negative, often when the situation doesn’t call for it. You’re not even expressing valid criticisms, just saying negative shit and moaning.
The film did better than I expected, two days in. I’m shocked it’s on par with MHA, which has merchandise in Walmart and is way more popular in the states (or so I thought). Everyone reading: don’t be distracted by Moose’s grouching. The film is doing very well for an OP film in the states. OP is definitely on the upswing here. :) Huge thanks to all the marketing and the dub speed-up, no doubt.

The real crime here is that this dub wasn’t union, so the dub actors probably got paid next to nothing for a multi-million dollar film.

@zeltrax225 said in 1073: "No Escape! Onigashima, a Picture of Hell":
@kevo_koma Just want to say I know where you are coming from because this was 100% my impression of how things worked (its old school drawings, if they can do it 20 years ago, they should be like 20 times faster now!) until I decided to try being an artist myself.
It takes a long time to get things right especially if you want fluidity that gear 5 has shown in 1071+1072. A minor uh, complain, people brought up regarding 1072 was that there were too much happening in every frames per second so if you actually do slow it down, you can see that most of the frames in 1072 was of much, much higher quality than older cartoons.Older cartoons also had an audience that won't go on a tantrum about things such as lighting, composition, camera angles, ALL of which are stuff that requires a fair amount of time. Add that in to the fact that you have different animators, schedules to work with, budgets, and you get how doing it weekly is simply not manageable at all. One animator can probably at best do 10-20 seconds of high-quality, fluid animation in like a month or so if they strain themselves.
Personally, I think one piece needing to be seasonal instead of weekly is a very valid opinion to have. I'm guilty of not watching Wano because I genuinely hated the whiplash I'll get from moving from a great episode to plummet right down into one with a snail's pace.
I actually went to a local cinema showing of remastered old Fleischer cartoons. They’re wonderfully fluid, but the background was that it took them months to do like a ten minute B&W cartoon with fairly simple, straight on medium shots & standard angles/POVs. They also had real life sets that another department was working on simultaneously, so that took out the background animation effort. So yes, the actual character actions were insanely fluid and beautiful, but everything else was simple and toned down to make up for it—and it still took months. (You’ll also notice those models so often are on loops.)
My legitimate complaint about this show is that they should’ve updated the Kaido CGI model when they made Momo’s. Momo’s model looks way more on-model and accurate. Kaido’s model is way too thin, and the face is too plainly CGI and angular. It takes me out of the show every time that model comes on screen. I understand that they have to use the CGI sometimes, but they should’ve updated it using the new Momo model. They did a better job with Momo’s.

More good news:
Official numbers have the opening weekend landing above 9mil. That's great for the series, though frustrating considering the lack of union and payout to the cast.

It's really remarkable how close the english rhythm sounds to the japanese here. It's a very good translation/adaptation. I've listened to both songs so many times and they sound so similar, to a degree that the Funimation ones never did.

If they keep at this rate, they’ll be releasing our current subbed episodes (1040s) in January 2024. Will be caught up around mid-year 2024.

Are we still feeling Wano will start in January?
Seems right to me. They haven't slowed down yet. No reason to believe they would, except that casting a new slew of characters takes some time. And yet they did that for WCI's plethora of characters without needing a break, so they can probably do it for Wano, too. I'm excited to make my little fan edit of Reverie next month.

Forgot to say: woot woot! Congrats to us all finishing WCI and Reverie! This is super exciting. There’s a random dubbed PV on the final reverie episode for Wano, plus a preview on the final episode. Nice to see what’s soon to come!
Karasu’s voice is very hard to hear. Way too quiet imo. The other new captain voices sound spot-on to me. Not sure if there were other new voices I forgot to look for as I skimmed the set, but those were all fine.

Man, so many new characters coming these next two sets: Otama, Otsuru, Denjiro, Ashura, Okiku, Kitetsu, Speed, Shinobu, Urashima, Holdem, and everyone’s favorite….Bat-man!
Plus tons of Hawkins and Kaido.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Agreed, and yet here we are at around six weeks since the last set; hopefully it shadow drops tomorrow.
EDIT: Nope. Damn. Getting more likely it’ll be a two month wait. Bummer. Guess maybe they just sped up one release and now we’re eating the extra break. Or maybe more likely the TX freeze slowed them down? Ah well. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to keep up the speed.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Well, that’s what they’re doing here in the US. They’re finishing the series, then we’re all hoping they move on the old films. That seems likely enough. My question next is whether or not they’ll ever bother with the old tv specials. Some of them are quite fun. Would love to see all the old content dubbed.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah, “again” makes it sound like there was a long break. But yeah, the flashback is around sixteen episodes, which translates to probably a month or so of production time, plus the two week delay due to the Texas freeze. So yeah, he probably went without recording for like a month and a half, maybe two. Makes sense.
In one way or another, I’m willing to bet that Texas freeze was responsible for the delay in the last set. Hopefully we’re back on a monthly schedule now. Time will tell.
Also, that would put them around 45 episodes ahead of us. That tracks, too.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Double wow. No idea how far Clint is ahead of the booth, but awesome that he’s basically caught up!
And dang, I was rationing so hard I bought the set and haven’t watched an episode on it yet. So that was a waste of money, lmao. Two week turnaround is quick! I’ve been crossing my fingers that we’ll get another set next Tuesday.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
The first set only has the first three or so episodes of the flashback on it. The second set ends right at the end of the flashback, assuming their usual 12 episodes.
But the first set also has the first Ishitani episode. :D …which is why I’m so hyped for it and definitely bummed it didn’t drop today. I’ll be in Japan when it drops, likely next Tuesday. O.O

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Here’s hoping a simuldub is in the works. I don’t want to go back to the six-week schedule. We’re at five so far for this set.
What I can’t wait for, too, is for them to start work on the movies, which I expect will be soon, since they’re wrapping up the last handful of episodes available.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Not a popular take, but I think Colleen’s Luffy is my favorite when compared with the Japanese voice actors. Tanaka’s Luffy sounds too high for me, though she has a better laugh. Besides that, I don’t think I have any strong individual preferences, outside of an overall preference for the dub.
Fingers crossed for a new set in a few hours. I don’t think I’ll be able to ration this set; too hyped.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Production demands & flooding the market, probably. They only put out a slim number of titles per month, and they don't want OP to take up a spot each month. Also, there's probably a fear that folks won't want to drop $40/month on a set, so they space them out a little for fan's pocketbooks. Especially since fans will be less likely to catch up if they fall behind.
I think there's probably a lot of psychology / market research that goes into these decisions. I'm just thankful they found a way to release the episodes faster. Though, yes, I'd much prefer bluray quality...
