Either way, if it somehow does turn up to be true, I'm not evolving Smugleaf. Its evolutions are as disappointing as Chikorita's.

RE: Pokemon's Fifth Generation
There's going to be a lot of egg on face going around regardless of how this evolution debate turns out. It certainly doesn't help that Serebii threw down the gauntlet and pretty much staked his reputation on them being real.
Joe has a real bad habit of doing that. He did that last time and made a big apology on Twitter about posting fake info that he thought was real.
From the looks of it, it's not a "source" telling him it's real. He's going by what he says. Not once did he say he had a source saying it was real, but the fact that he believes it's a good chance that it's real based on previous info.
-
RE: Pokemon's Fifth Generation
Why are we all still calling them legit when there's still zero official sources stating so?
Trusting 2ch as the source is like believing 4chan. Especially when we've had a good number of times where "legit" evolutions have been popping up and being retracted.
-
RE: Pokemon's Fifth Generation
Where are you guys getting info on the evolutions' types? There still isn't even any confirmation that they're legit.
-
RE: Pokemon's Fifth Generation
And I'll be able to play through it…adding MORE games to my backlog. 8D

RE: Channel Awesome, AVGN, and other web review shows
is there another part to that digimon retrospective?
So far, she's only covered Adventure. She did say at the end of it that Zero Two was next, so it's gonna happen.

RE: Dragonball Discussion
Kind of offtopic
I could never understand the reasoning behind that. Chi Chi's a fighter or at least was a fighter for one arc, her dads a fighter, and her one true love is a fighter but for whatever reason her first born son can't take up fighting like his parents and grandparents. And then just as confusingly it's she basically allows Goten to take up fighting and is much less overprotecting of him.
She's like that with Gohan because she grew an overly protective motherly instinct. Hell, right after her match with Goku, she started acting like a stay-at-home wife before they were even married. It's a woman thing, more or less.
Also probably because Goku's an irresponsible parent, so to speak.
Well rewatched the Bardock special and the fat dude who is with Bardock looks like Nappa … is he a brother or some other relative of him?
Pumbukin looks nothing like Nappa. O_o; Just cause of the 'stache? If you wanna go that route, then lookit this:

RE: Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse
Finished the first season, playing the second.
Love how Sam & Max: Freelance Police is an ongoing gag, even Duke Nukem Forever.

RE: Channel Awesome, AVGN, and other web review shows
When I get my review series off the ground (starts saving up for equpiment… now) one thing I'll cover is the 4Kids dub (among various movies/shows/games). If you think it's "pointless to cover something outdated" just remember that the Nostalgia Critic specializes in material from the 80s and 90s.
Yeah, but his material is completely different from what you're talking about. o_o
It's pointless at this point because it's no longer relevant. If the arguments were being made back then, yeah, then it would have made sense. But at this point, it's basically like beating a dead horse with a stick. 4Kids hardly does anything new or close to the same level as their dub of One Piece and FUNimation's practically long rectified all of the issues with 4Kids' dub.
I guess for the sake of looking at it in a retrospective point of view might make sense, but in a review style of pointing out everything wrong with it? Eh…not really relevant anymore. It's also the reason why I never revived my original videos (aside from them being cheaply made compared to my recent stuff).

RE: Angry Video Game Nerd
Oh, and I loved his reaction to the Super BttF II Famicom game.
That would make it the second time he's flipped out over missing out on good games for a franchise he loved that got some awful games.
Would have said third if he hadn't reviewed the newer Ghostbusters game as himself. :p
-
RE: Channel Awesome, AVGN, and other web review shows
What are the examples in his Dragonball Evolution review?
A lot of his information is based off the original dubs of the franchise, which was more often than not wrong. He also somehow believed the "Mafuba" was a made up attack name…when that was the actual name of the attack, meanwhile mispronouncing the Kamehame-Ha. It's been a while since I saw the review, but I believe he also had the idea that the movie was supposed to be based off of DBZ, rather than DB.
-
RE: Channel Awesome, AVGN, and other web review shows
It's not that I don't like him, it's just the way he approaches things comes off arrogant and goes way too overboard, sometimes even missing the point. Quite a few times, his videos are completely wrong on several levels, like his Dragonball Evolution review.
-
RE: Pokemon's Fifth Generation
Yeah, this is also true. And if these somehow are real, I'm never evolving Tsutarja and Sceptile would remain the most badass Grass-starter final evolution.
-
RE: Angry Video Game Nerd
Looks like next month might be a revisit to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Mainly due to the fact that he never actually covered the game and only recorded the frustration of not being able to do anything and randomly dying. Also kinda sad that he didn't mention the Telltale announcement of BttF games. Though all in all, a great video and a nice jab at George Lucas going back to older work and tampering with them in the beginning of the video.
-
RE: Pokemon's Fifth Generation
I doubt those evolutions are actually legit. The final stage evolutions look far too radically different in art design compared to the rest of the forms. If you look at previous starters, they've never really changed too much from their base designs like the way these have.
Also, I could swear that Pokabu's "final evolution" has the body of Rhyperior.

RE: Channel Awesome, AVGN, and other web review shows
Everyone I know who's seen NC's Rocky 4 review has said the same thing: "why didn't he do Rocky 5?!"
Too easy to do. Just say "Rocky 5" and you've got the punchline.
@No:
Interesting , though I fear Big Al's old 06 video series on the same thing is gonna be superior to this .
Meh. His review borrowed way too much from my older 4Kids One Piece videos and just drove it off the road. Hell, I'm embarrassed by my old work but his videos went waaaay too far from how I did it. :\

RE: Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse
Speaking of Sam & Max, replaying through the first season. At the last episode and will be hitting up Season 2. Man I loved that online game episode. So many inside jokes.

RE: The PlayStation Thread
It's close enough. Heck, PS1 games run on emulation within the system. That proves all that needs proven
The Dreamcast was capable of playing PlayStation games. Not exactly a taxing system to work with like the PS2.

RE: The PlayStation Thread
PCs can emulate PS2 games. No reason a PS3, which kinda fades the line between game console and computer, can't.
The PS3 isn't a PC. That's reason enough at this point.
-
RE: The PlayStation Thread
Well there was that leaked Sega document that mentioned PS2 emulation for the PS3.

@robbybedfart:
Personally, I'm just waiting for Suikoden 2, I can't figure what the holdup is on that one.
They know we want it, but they will never give it to us. They're practically dangling it over our heads and going "Nyah nyah, you can't have this."
-
RE: The PlayStation Thread
Speaking of fixing issues: They're finally fixing the issue with their controller's D-Pad…except you have to buy a new controller. And it'll cost you more than a new game.
When the hell did controllers get so fucking expensive?
-
RE: The PlayStation Thread
Yeah, a lot of the best looking download-only games wind up being XBLA-exclusives. Also they offer Xbox 1 games, PSN doesn't offer PS2 games, only PS1. That DOES make me envious. But following Sony's track record on PSOne classics, we'd get all the crappy PS2 shovelware and occasionally a great game to perform a combo breaker.
… man, for a life-long Sony fanboy I sure crack their nuts a lot. Guess that makes me one of the sane fanboys?
OMGz bes cunsul EVAR dun evr say NE th1ng bad bout it!!!11one
VERY few Xbox games are available to play on the 360, even worse when some have issues with BC support. Even though PSN doesn't offer PS2 titles, Sony is at least releasing fully updated HD releases of PS2 titles, such as what we saw with God of War 1 and 2, as well as the Sly Cooper series, with more planned to be released.
I never got rid of my original Xbox because the BC was a hassle on the 360, especially when a good chunk of the games on the Xbox aren't playable on the 360. I pointed out that Sony removing BC on the PS3 was a dick move, but at least we're seeing an effort in making the games available again in some manner, rather than just a half-ass release with all of the glitches from BC left in-tact.

RE: The PlayStation Thread
The thing is, PSN+ feels more like it's worth the cost. Free full games, PSN games, PSOne Classics, DLC and discounts? Yes please. Microsoft would NEVER do that. They've only given really mediocre stuff for free and have even charged on content that's free everywhere else (namely Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2's DLC).
With Gold, they would go on about how I could watch Netflix, use Facebook and Twitter on my 360 as well as group chat; all of that can be done for FREE on the PC. Steam offers group voice chat for free. Facebook and Twitter? All on PC and mobile devices. Netflix streaming? I can do that on my PC for no additional means. The PS3 and Wii can also do it, albeit by disc though the PS3 will be changing that once MS' contract with Netflix ends.
Some people said "Oh, but you get ESPN and TV services like Hulu soon." I say, "so what?" I never used any of the shit mentioned above, save for Netflix. Why would I want to with the others? I don't care for sports, so ESPN means jack shit to me. Hulu wants money for recently aired TV shows? TV's not exactly been very great to watch lately, so that's another one out the door for me. Also means nothing when the shows I do watch have official streams from either their official sites or broadcasting networks' sites and for FREE.
So what was I paying for Live for? Discounts that I barely took advantage of because of MS' retarded points setup always leaving me with an odd total leftover that can't be used for anything. And there was hardly anything available as a discount that I wanted. Last thing I bought was Afterburner HD, and that was due to Sega cutting the price. Online play? I stopped playing most 360 games online, mainly due to the fact that the 360's community is littered with kids that don't know when to shut the hell up and idiots my age that only know how to respond with every racial slur and swear word they know.
Why pay for that when that's free on PSN? Not to mention, Steam's community is far better. And Steam's free, while offering the most amazing discounts on games and DLC, as well as free DLC for Valve games.
-
RE: The PlayStation Thread
PSN+ has convinced me to not renew my Xbox Live Gold account and work towards getting a PS3, instead. After MS decided to raise the price for Gold and me finding little incentive to return to the god awful community, I'd rather pay for services that will make me feel like I'm getting my money's worth.

@Syan:
Wow. That was ignorant, racist AND offensive. You obviously don't know jack shit. Do you think France and Germany are the same place, too?
As someone who's Cuban, I can honestly say I wasn't offended by that comment and found it funny.
It's like an old joke; regardless of what Hispanic heritage you are, you are something else depending on where you live. South Florida? Cuban. California? Mexican. New York? Puerto Rican.

RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
Yes. I just said a few posts ago that I fixed mine and that it runs just as well as it did when I first got it. :P
The whole disc reading issue is just a simple tweak that requires nothing more than a pair of needle-nose pliers (and a screwdriver to unscrew the screws to open up the case).
As for Shenmue, well, the series cost more than it brought in. It didn't even make close to enough of what was spent on making the two titles. The first title hardly sold a million copies, and when it did it was only worldwide.
-
RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
Haha, double post!
And so it begins! Sonic Adventure is making its appearance on Xbox Live Arcade on September 15 for 800 MS Points ($10). Should hit PlayStation Network around the same time. No word on if it's a port of the Dreamcast version with GameCube visuals or what. No idea on the DLC, either. Also no word on when Crazy Taxi will stop by or any other Dreamcast titles that were voted on by Sega's community.

RE: Metroid: Other M
Buuhan, you'd be surprised how much ass kissing G4 does with most overhyped games just to see more money thrown their way. They more often than not hate anything that's seen as "weird Japanese culture," including anime-based games.
This is the best example of how G4 works:

RE: Dragonball Discussion
@Syan:
I dunno. Vegeta behaved pretty well for the whole year or so it took Goku to return to Earth. Apparently he was just crashing at Bulma's house and training. I think he'd gotten over wanting to rule the universe and was just fine with trying to become the strongest in the universe.
Yeah, after finding out Goku was still alive. :P
no evidence if you have a clear lack of reading comprehension skills sure I believe someone listed all the hints not something I'm really going to rewrite because I really don't care that much call me lazy or say it's not true w/e,
and as i said it was written in a book the official guide to manga which we debated on but I found to be a decent book, it gives quick summaries of series with dragon ballz going like this
"Official" by who's standards? Toriyama himself has never actually been quoted on wanting to end it at the Freeza saga. As I said, it's mainly something that's been thrown around by everyone and was just accepted as fact.
-
RE: Metroid: Other M
G4 stopped being reliable when they absorbed TechTV and killed off everything from both sides. It's obvious as hell that Morgan "Man Jaw" Webb and Olivia Munn are just there for the whole "sex appeal" thing and don't know shit about video games.
Especially with Morgan's whole verbal bashing of the Mario series and it being "too kiddy."
I miss when G4 had GOOD shows, like Icons.
-
RE: Dragonball Discussion
As much as I used to say it back in the old days, there's really no evidence that Toriyama wanted to end it at the Freeza saga. That's another one of those rumors spread around and accepted by the online community.
We would have been left with the fact that Vegeta's very much alive, would have been the strongest on Earth and would have been a hassle to deal with for Gohan, Kuririn and Piccolo.
-
RE: Dragonball Discussion
My only notable gripe so far was Vegeta getting the ability to control his ki and sense the ki of others literally out of nowhere
DBZ Abridged made a joke about that. Kwi asks just how Vegeta managed to do that, to which he responds with "I 'unno."
-
RE: Metroid: Other M
Everyone else has given the game around 8.5.
G4 and Game Informer are the only two idiots that gave the game less favorable scores. Just kinda goes to show they're the cancer of gaming journalism.
-
RE: Metroid: Other M
As expected from Team Ninja.
Just to clarify, this isn't the same team from previous games. Team Ninja is now just a name; a shell of what it used to be. This is due to the fact that the key members of the group have all left. Similar to Sonic Team.
Also, seems Game Informer gave the game a 6.25. Guess Nintendo didn't pay them off for a good review like all other publishers. Honestly, there have been broken games with worse stories that have gotten much higher reviews by GI. It really makes me believe their good reviews are bought off.
-
RE: Dragonball Discussion
did anyone know that at his first appearance mr. popo was at a power level of 1030…... well goku had a power level of 910 at the end of DB..... idk how they made this error
http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Power_levels
look at the pic
Officially speaking, the very first battle power reading came from Farmer with Shotgun. The very last was Trunks' reading of 5. Anything before Farmer and after Trunks is not really completely decided on by Toriyama. Even the Daizenshuu books released in Japan have a bit of inaccuracies that were made up for the books.
Even then, battle power readings mean diddly squat. They're estimated numbers based off of the amount of Ki one is giving off. It doesn't give off a proper reading of one's potential at all, as shown by how Goku and Trunks both hid their Ki against Ginyu and Freeza respectively, as well as Kuririn and Gohan against Gurd.
-
RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
Yeah, that's the exact problem I had. It wouldn't attempt to read anything. It's a very easy fix, and this is coming from someone who was terrified of breaking his system.
-
RE: Videogame traditions that need to die/Good ideas that need to be used more.
Erm, there have been instrument rhythm games before RB and GH.
-
RE: Videogame traditions that need to die/Good ideas that need to be used more.
@Mr.:
I agree with the Rockband/Guitar Hero thing but he's talking about the other ones like Parappa the Rapper and Elite Beat Agents. I'm sick and tired of seeing 5 different incarnations of Guitar Hero each year, especially when it could all be DLC anyway. I'd enjoy them in an arcade and when it's played on occasion with friends but it's really annoying to see people freak out over you not having the latest Guitar Hero because it's not up to date…
You're not the only ones getting sick of GH/RB. Seems like the oversaturation of instrument-based rhythm games affected the sales of the various releases from last year, as they sold rather poorly.
-
RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
If you still have your first Dreamcast, fixing the disc drive is easy. Mine stopped reading discs a few days ago and I managed to fix it real easily a couple of nights ago. Works as good as it did before.
Also a humorous take on Skies of Arcadia (including its random battles): http://jollyjack.deviantart.com/art/How-to-play-Skies-of-Arcadia-70712863

RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
An interesting thing to note: http://kotaku.com/5621234/the-dreamcast-will-not-die
A developer/publisher featured their newest Dreamcast title at Gamescom and plan on continuing releasing more games into the next year.
-
RE: Videogame traditions that need to die/Good ideas that need to be used more.
They need to make more music games like Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents. I had enough of tap tap guitar hero games! Make more rhythm games!
Try out the Samba de Amigo titles on the Dreamcast. Avoid the Wii version. Its control scheme is absolutely awful. Also try out Space Channel 5, which is on the Dreamcast and PS2.
Oh and the obvious recommendation of Parappa the Rapper.
-
RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
I think I would have loved Toy Commander more if the Dreamcast had a second analog stick, because god damn that game really could've used one.
Oh right, I forgot to mention my own experience. Guess I'm the only one who lost a LOT of sleep during his high school years playing Phantasy Star Online? :P If it wasn't Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, the Sonic Adventure games or Shenmue in my Dreamcast, Phantasy Star Online was the one I had glued in there. Loooots of times were spent getting yelled at for tying up the phone line. 8D

RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
Hm, I was always under the impression that the Dreamcast's big failing was sticking to GCD-rom format for their games rather than moving on to DVD-rom, which scared away developers that assumed DVD-rom was the future. It was also undermined by being outsold by Final Fantasy VIII on the day of its launch.
I effin' loved Soul Calibur and Skies of Arcadia, though. The best fighting game of its time and a console-defining RPG. Not a bad duo to convince Lazzie to buy a system. One example of a port that DID add former DLC to its Dreamcast ports was Skies of Arcadia: Legends. It took the items and rewards from Dreamcast DLC quests and made them rewards in new sidequests. A fair way to handle it, all things considered.
In regards to the GD-ROM, it was actually the fact that it had less room on it than a DVD. Sega was trying to outdo the N64 and PlayStation by showing that the GD-ROM could hold far more than their formats could, but they didn't anticipate Sony using DVDs.
They first thought about going that route, but DVD was an expensive media back and the licensing fees were far too much for Sega to invest in to go with the format. Not only that, but they wanted to keep the Dreamcast cheap; a big difference compared to the unreasonably expensive Saturn. They did, however, plan to upgrade the Dreamcast late into its life with a DVD player that would connect to the Dreamcast. According to the info card shown in front of a DVD player shell for the Dreamcast, they were intending on using DVDs not just for movies but for games as well.
Unfortunately, it never came around. Another problem with GD-ROM was how easy it eventually became to burn games onto a CD.
In regards to FFVIII, it's worth noting that the top 5 selling games of September in 1999 were Final Fantasy VIII, Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, NFL2K and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing (in that order). While it did sell hella numbers, it is worth noting that quite a lot of FF fans got suckered into buying it because Sony or Squaresoft ended up showing nothing but FMVs in all of the game's ads as a counter to the Dreamcast. If they actually showed what the game actually looked like, sales wouldn't be as high. Most people were expecting it to be leagues above what Final Fantasy VII offered. Though it's not bad that the Dreamcast commanded the next four top selling games in that month. House of the Dead 2 and Hydro Thunder also made it into the top 20.
And in regards the DLC for Skies, yeah, they needed a way to incorporate the weapons and island into the game due to the GameCube not having any means of connecting to the internet (save for Phantasy Star Online). So it worked out best that way. I completely forgot how they handled the VMU stuff, such as Pinta's Quest. Honestly haven't played much of the Cube version, even though I've owned it for years. o_O

RE: Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
@robbybedfart:
The dreamcast's major failing is that it followed the Saturn, which followed the Sega CD/32-X.
The customer base didn't have faith in Sega anymore to keep the system going for more than 2 years or to get any exclusive killer titles.
I know I didn't.
Yeah, the Dreamcast happened to be the victim of Sega's past coming back to haunt it. Top it off with how poorly the rest of the world handled the Dreamcast's launch and the announcement of the PS2, it was easy to see why the Dreamcast didn't go on much further.
In Australia, the console suffered a delayed launch. This sounds normal, except that not a single game, memory card or extra controllers were available at launch; everything but the system got held up in customs! Europe had to wait roughly a month after North America got the system and suffered from a drought of games near the end of its life. Even its own official magazine spent two monthly issues discussing nothing but import titles from NA and Japan due to there not having been anything on the horizon until Shenmue II and Rez popped around. Meanwhile, Japan flat out did not accept the Dreamcast. It launched with a poor line-up, save for Sonic Adventure. However, their version of SA was extremely buggy as it was rushed to meet the deadline. It wasn't until we got our version where they re-released the game as "Sonic Adventure International," which fixed a lot of bugs. It did not help that DVDs were becoming popular there and they soon discovered the PS2 could play them. To make matters worse, they could not meet demand at launch due to an error with production of a chip by NEC.
So North America was left with having to fix Japan's issues, and had to charge in aggressively. They had to spend a ton of money in advertising on TV and magazines, roping in developers (such as with Visual Concepts), setting up a much better launch line-up and provide enough consoles to meet demand. From then on, they had to ensure people were enjoying what they had with contests, special offers and so on.
Sega was bleeding money from every hole to keep the Dreamcast afloat. Sega's then-CEO Isao Okawa put money into the company from his own pocket to try keeping it from falling too deep and even went to Microsoft about forming some kind of deal to make the Xbox backwards compatible with the Dreamcast. Never went through. Two months after they announced the Dreamcast was finished, Mr. Okawa passed away. Not long after that, Sammy merged with Sega and practically tarnished it after it was making a name for itself as a third party developer.

Dreamcast's 11th Anniversary
It's that time of year again where that little white box that represented all of Sega's hopes and dreams (as well of its fans') is nearing the anniversary of its North American release. And once again, I celebrate it in style by bringing as much as I can to the table in honor of the little sucker's memory.
Last year, I made a tribute video and recorded footage of the Dreamcast games that contained DLC, years before it became a standard. Most of that DLC ended up being lost and not even used in their current day ports (Sonic Adventure and Samba de Amigo being the notable ones). This year, I'll be doing the same thing by touching up on the games I left out in the last tribute and the DLC videos, but I'll also be adding a bit more than just that.
So I figured, why not start a conversation about it here?
It seems like whether you owned one or not, most people remember the Dreamcast with a sort of fondness, as well as sadness and are generally puzzled by why exactly it even went away. Unlike most other failed consoles, the Dreamcast seems to be the only one that didn't have anything genuinely wrong with it.
What are everyone's thoughts about the Dreamcast? Any fond memories or anything like that? Favorite games? Regrets about it?
Also, here's a look at the tribute vid I mentioned before:

RE: Dragonball Discussion
Regarding "Korin," is it fact that that was FUNi's intention, or are we just going by assumption?
Same people that took Tenshinhan and turned it into "Tien" and "Tien Shin Han." As well as changing the pronunciation of "Saiyan" to "Say-an" and spelling Freeza as "Frieza." Sometimes logic was never really applied.
