! I was really hoping that Dany would use her Mereen vacation to reflect on her actions. That clearly is not happening any time soon though. I did like her dragon scene though. It was the kind of scene I would expect the Dothraki to rally around rather than, the unburnt lady. I'm probably in the minority on here but I've never found Danys acting to be distractingly bad.
! I prefer the book Randyl Tarly who is slightly proud his son managed to get a girl pregnant to Sam just getting chewed out at dinner. I don't know why they think Gilly+Sam is so interesting that they need to steal heartsbane and ride to the Ctiadel together. The most exciting part about Sam in Oldtown is the people he meets. The most exciting part about Sam anywhere is everyone else really. I don't know how many more scenes we need of Sam and Gilly cutely expressing how much they care about each other like teenagers.
! I don't believe Margery has gone religious. I hope she's just doing this all for Loras and using the Sparrow and Tommen.
! I don't like that Benjen is back. They could have made a new character for that. It's less surprising to me and more silly for him to be the one to rescue Bran.
! So Arya will beat the Waif proving her training is complete and she'll leave the Faceless Ones to return to the story properly. How long will all of this take, probably way too long.

I'm still not sold on Big Mom being a bad person. Somehow I feel like it will be all a misunderstanding.

I can see something like "Eating people? Oh, it's just humanoid candy. Heads in a box? It's a head shaped cake. Bombing islands? With chocolate. Stealing ingredients? It's from villains. Singing about making food out dead bodies? It's just a song. We just like to look creepy, what's the problem with… omg don't tell me everyone thought it was true!?"

She killed people just for ingredients to make a cake.

She's a pirate to the core. She can also want a utopia for the people under her. Those aren't conflicting ideas. I think if you're on her side life can be good but if you're not she won't hesitate to kill you and your entire country if she wants something.

We know the past is immobile because Bran's present is based on it. He didn't change anything. So even if his actions make some "change" to the past whatever that "change" is, is already a part of Bran's present and future.

    • RE: Star Trek Franchise

The problem is Star Trek isn't Guardians of the Galaxy mixed with Fast and Furious. There's more to it than that and they haven't explored it. It's not supposed to be a utopia where everything is solved via diplomacy but rather about the conflicts that could arise between multiple space farring species competing over space and resources or the problems you could encounter while exploring uncharted space. The new movies don't really go after either of these things and Star Trek is a hugely successful series that has spawned multiple accompanying series and other media so it's not like it's impossible for those types of stories to be told in different ways.

I think the problem is if you're going to spend 150 million dollars on a film you want a huge return on that investment so they try to make the films appeal to as many people as possible so you end up with Guardians+F&F instead of something that resembles Star Trek. I don't think they could get away with making a movie like Star Trek I or IV these days and I don't think they want to even try.

They could try to turn the Dominion War into a film series or do something similar with their current cast instead of making stand alone adventures. I think that would be a good compromise.

Or maybe we have a really solid grasp on the concept. It's not a paradox because it doesn't effect the timeline that Brans is living in. He hasn't changed his future. A paradox would occur if a future event requires a past event in order to exist but in creating the past event you change the future to the point where you could never have known you were supposed to go back and change it in the first place. That is the paradox. Knowledge or action that requires information or objects that no longer exist because you've changed the future that they would have come from. The non existence of information or objects is the paradox.

That's not what happened though. There is no loop. There's not even a U-turn or something. Brans and Hodor's timeline are completely intact. There simply exist no future where Hodor was never Hodor'd.

I think the number of possible outcomes where Hodor ends up there at that moment doing that thing because he was Hodor'd is greatly outnumbered by the possible outcomes in which anything else happens to him because he was Hodor'd.

I don't think that's perspective either but yeah. We disagree.

      @Foolio:

! I disagree. A hell of a lot that happened revolved around that, and a hell of a lot would be different without current Hodor. Even if Bran still SOMEHOW ended up more or less where he is, a lot of events would have been different. Also that would still imply that there was some theoretical "first" time history played out, with unharmed Hodor, and that at some point Bran fucked up history and then it started cyclically repeating itself. The whole altering the past thing completely necessitates the concept of multiple timelines and all that crap. Now I'm just waiting for Bran to go back to the past and stop HIMSELF from doing things.

! Different doesn't mean a paradox though. It's only a paradox if Hodor only ended up holding the door because Bran hodor'd him. Realistically Hodor could have died several times on the journey and even could have been killed by the wights before he even made it to the door. He could have been killed by Theon or tripped over a bucket or something. Nothing that Bran did was inherently responsible for how things ended up it effected it yes but without a clear cause> <effect loop="" i="" don't="" see="" it="" as="" a="" paradox.="" more="" like="" spicing="" up="" the="" past.="" <br="">If I time travel back to 1643 and punch a guy in the face that doesn't mean I've created a time paradox even if I later encounter that person's descendant and we fall in love or something. A causal loop falls well within the definition of a time paradox. This is practically the definition of a causal loop. If you're arguing otherwise you're delusional; if you're making a semantic argument then you're wasting my time.

! I don't think it's a paradox because it doesn't really change anything. It just gives us the reason Hodor only says Hodor but we can't say for certain that the the events of the episode only took place because he was Hodor'd. Say he wasn't Hodor'd at all ever. We don't know where he might have ended up but it's possible he could have ended up in the same situation. He doesn't end up in that situation only because he got Hodor'd. He could very well have not been Hodor'd, ended up there, and still held the door. Also it's not as if Bran knew this event was coming so he didn't travel back with the purpose of creating a protector for that one moment. Same goes for Hodor. He had no idea his Hodoring was linked to the event that took place. So there's no clear cause>

No. That's just a theory that hasn't really been thought out very well for the reasons already given.

The Khaleesi only has power through the Khal. Once Drogo dies the Khalassar abandons Dany. They don't even take her back to their city where she is supposed to go. They basically leave her, with the weak, for dead.

Khalassars are ruled by Khals and they are protected by their Blood Riders. Kind of like their King's Guard but just like you wouldn't expect a member of the King's Guard to take over the kingdom after the king dies, no one expects the Blood Riders to. Instead the next in line are the Ko and they weren't present when Dany decided to burn the house down. Someone of that rank was the one who took over when Khal Drogo died. Presumably Vaes Dothrak would be full of them. Each capable and expected to rise to the rank of Khal after their former Khal had died. Each capable of challenging Dany's claim of leadership. It's not even clear that Dany caused the fire, it's just known that she's a widow with unusual hair who survived the fire completely unburnt. Amazing yes. But not a clear show of strength that you would expect the Dothraki to respect.

I also wouldn't expect them to respect her killing her enemies with magic. I think they would see that as a cheap trick. Essos is full of magic users but Dothraki culture has none. We have heard several times about their dislike of witches. They value raw physical strength. Not even clever strategy and tactics. That's why I said her riding a dragon and commanding it to kill her enemies would be more acceptable because they respect riding and riding a beast as ferocious and powerful as a dragon would be a clear sign of power.

Superstitious does not equal respect. It's as likely to incite fear or anger. That the response they give is respect is what is being argued as not making much sense and I still agree with that argument. There is way too much wrong with how she earned this respect to make it as clear cut as the show seems to be making it. If there is some major push back in the coming episode that would make all of this easier to swallow. If not, I don't think it makes much sense.

From what we know about the Dothraki. Misogynistic, superstitious, fearful of witches I agree that Dany's plan shouldn't work. Based on their own rules, the death of the Khals and all their blood riders would just immediately create a power vacuum that any strong Dothraki could fill in the same way that a new Khalassar was created almost immediately following Drogo's death. Sure she survived the fire but what's to stop anyone from just walking up to her and stabbing her in the face. Even Drogo had to prove his strength within his own Khalassar in order to keep respect. Dany wouldn't be able to do that but based on Dothraki culture a physical challenge to her rule should be expected. Mirri Maz was known to be a witch as well but that didn't put enough fear into the Dothraki to save her from rape or enslavement.

There's a lot of reasons why it shouldn't work. It would have been better if Drogon had torched them. Even better if she was mounted on Drogon while he did it. I feel like the Dothraki would more easily fall in line for a dragon rider/tamer.

I wonder how far from the book they're going if at all. I'm still expecting Dany to visit Asshai because of Quaithe's warning. She was right about everything else.

I think it's been a great season overall. Hall of Egress, Bad Jubies, Crossover were exceptional. Episodes like The Thin Yellow Line and Summer Showers were just fun. A few weak ones but this weeks was great too. More backstory on the world is always nice.

! It's nice to see the elemental guys brought up again. It's also interesting that bubblegum couldn't seem to use her power but Slime and Flame princess clearly could. That's going to come up again I'm sure. The fart noise though is just as funny as when they did it the first time. It's even better now that it's coming out of PB.
! Not sure if Patience is going to be an end of season kind of problem, a recurring problem, or something like Maja where she'll pop up a season from now in a big way. She might have a way to undo the work of her previous incarnation and tweak the crown's magic. It seems to be a recurring theme that the Ice Elemental is always a bit.. off.

The only thing I saw wrong with what Baelish did is that it makes it explicitly clear to Royce that he is manipulating the heir to the Vale which is what Royce and the others had a problem with in the first place. I don't see why Royce wouldn't just go back to the other lords who were allied against Peytr to begin with and conspire against him. Especially if Peytr wants to start a war campaign. He's going to gather together the armies of all the people who don't like him after he's proven he's as untrustworthy as they all thought he was.

! That was really unclear. Like if the High Sparrow did tell Tommen that, he did it certainly knowing it would reach his mother and the rest of court. So that means he wants a confrontation. Maybe he does, that seems really manipulative though. But also an open confrontation using just Tyrell men against the church would make the Tyrells look bad which we know Cersei would love to see and if it works it also gets rid of the High Sparrow.

! If it was bloodmagic there was no sacrifice on her part. Also she doesn't really know how to do blood magic. But magic would be the only way she survives not just the fire but the collapsing structure and the smoke. So I guess she can do blood magic now but that really has no precedent. GRRM said the Dragon baby fire was supposed to be a one time thing. But this is show and things are different, ok. Still needs an explanation.
! As for the how the fire spread the floor is dirt but if those torches were filled with oil or rendered fat, very full, that could easily explain it spreading the way it did.
! Dany is one of my favorite characters. I usually support and defend her decision making. But she literally just went through the problem of what happens when you tear down a power structure and don't put anything to replace it. It's not like she's going to stay with Dothraki forever. She doesn't even plan on stay on the continent. Unless she takes all of them with her to Westeros then she just killed all their leaders so she could use them for short term power gain. Like I said, I'm sure there is more to this plan than just kill the leaders the Dothraki have historically and culturally followed for thousands of years but it better be good. Otherwise she's just repeating the same mistakes she made.
! I get that she was in a predicament but if the writers are already deviating from what GRRM had planned then they could have had her get out of that situation the same way she got out of the arena. I mean where did Drogon go at the end of least season. Or maybe she could have sneaked out of the city. They could have done several things. They choose to do it this way though.

I don't think any of the main houses treat their smallfolk poorly. By waging war with each other they treat everyone else's smallfolk like garbage though. I have a hard time picturing Tywin not understanding the concept of keeping the little people happy but at the same time he has no problem sending Clegane to rape and pillage the Riverlands.

I like that Highgarden is free of internal struggles. It makes them stronger than the Lannisters even if they were equal in resources and I think that lack of internal conflict speaks well about the Tyrells as a family. I wouldn't want to spend time in Highgarden but I enjoy all the characters who are from Highgarden when they're playing the game.

The house with the least interesting characters is Tully or Aryn for me. They're weak, boring, and not really playing the game. Just getting used by people who are.

This brought back the feelings I had when I started watching the show but before I read the books.

! All the Jon Snow stuff is new and I'm kind of glad he left the Night Watch. He was one of my least favorite characters. Just really dull to watch and read. I feel that way about most of the Starks except Araya, Sansa is getting better. A change of environment and the possibility of putting him back into the story with the rest of the main characters is exciting. I also thought all the scenes were done well.
! Really disappointed they didn't do the full speech for the Tower of Joy, it's one of my favorite parts in the book. The fight was really well done. I agree Hightower went down too easily and there was supposed to be three kingsguard and they ruined Dawn. I'm not sure if they didn't think they could choreograph a cool fight using a greatword or they just didn't care. Still it was really cool to watch a guy use two swords to battle four people.
! Excited to see Sam's home and family. Really happy to see Olenna is still around. That Varys scene was awesome. Tyrions scene was funny. That scene with the High Sparrow was creepy, it reminded me of my short stay at a jesus camp. Religion can be creepily contagious to young minds but I'm not sure how old Tommen is supposed to be.
      ! And Rickon's back!

! Why I'm not sure unless we're going to watch Ramsay kill Osha and torture then kill Rickon. Which would be a shame. I don't think that's going to happen though, he's here for a reason. But it really was weird for Katstark to just hand him over to Ramsay like that. Not just weird but stupid. Every breath Rickon takes is a challenge to Ramsay's claim and something he would want no one to know so every moment that Rickon is alive won't make any sense. Especially after we see what he did to his father and Fat Walda just because she had a boy.
! Overall though like I said i haven't had this feel about an episode of GoT in awhile and it feels good. I'm probably going to rewatch the entire thing at least once.

It is when banks are BIGGER than they were before the crash that tanked the worlds economy and they're funding the next president. It is when the world is debating a trade agreement that Obama supports which means, before the public backlash, the party supported and will most likely try to pass in some way.

You're weighing supreme court seats vs trump. Big decision obviously. Bad for everyone, myself included if he gives those seats to conservatives. But that is blinding you to the threat of the Democratic party.

The person they back is the person who is most likely to win. They're not going to back people who won't play ball with the party. The problem is systemic.

Hahaha im loving all these different opinions, minus the mudslinging. But from what I've gathered, we all have one common goal: Keep Trump out of office. If I have to choose between making a stand and keeping Trump out of power its a relatively easy choice to make.

Then nothing will ever change. I expect most people will reach the conclusion you do. Fear of Trump in office is a powerful motivator. I don't think it's the right decision though despite what the hivemind thinks and I'll express that every chance they parrot that it's only smart and mature and wise way of thinking. People who have to insult you in order to make a point don't really have a point, if they did, and that point was strong enough then it would be sufficient enough to end the discussion. You can throw insults into your argument but when the argument is you are dumb, you are stupid, you are a child. That's just hot air.

The greater good involves breaking up the banks, reducing domestic spying, and trade agreements that don't continue to exploit the working people of the world.

Democrats should treat these issues as seriously as Republican's treat abortion and gay marriage.

As long as you're willing to vote for whoever they come up with simply so that the Reps don't get it they have no reason to pursue the greater good.

Hmmmm? What do you mean? Could you elaborate preferably without calling me idiotic too lol??

Don't be pressured by their insults. The best reason they have for voting for Hilary is because they don't want Trump which makes sense but doesn't solve the problem that one party is backing Hilary and voting for her offers them no incentive to change.

If you're a registered and consistent democratic voter, going to the polls and voting for all the local issues but not voting for Hilary sends a very strong message to the party. The closer this election is the more incentive the Democrats have to change. It won't be close though because Trump isn't going to win no matter how much they call you stupid or naive or an idiot. They're just fear-mongering.

Well I got to admit, if you guys mission here was to make me feel like an idiot for writing in Bernie, mission accomplished. Aside from the name calling my eyes have been opened a bit. Its nice to come here sometimes and get a reality check regarding my vote. I've currently been swayed by pro-bernie fanatics who despise Hillary and pile on negative info, truth or not. I'll probably vote for Hillary because deep down I know I have no other choice.

Yeah it was pretty good for how much it juggled. It felt a lot like the first Avengers in how effortlessly it brought all those characters together. I liked it better than Ultron but I didn't dislike Ultron.

Like wolfwood said, I think they'll have a pretty good idea with how to bring infinity wars together into a great film. Needs some work but you can tell they're working on it.

      @desa:

Trump sure is a weird case. I can't really blame the republicans. Trump probably checked every possible box in the checklist on what not to do to win an election, so they all tought he would sabotage himself and decided to ride the path of destruction he was leaving, certain that at one point the voters would seek a better alternative and choose them. It's not so much a much a lack of foresight than Trump being immune to politics logic and the hard choice of abandonning your campain.

That's not really true though because they all tried to steal bits and pieces of Trump and tone it down or rework it for their own campaign once they realized the kind of base they had been hyping up for decades. Trump is the symptom of the problem and the problem is the base. He's like the base incarnate. He said all the things out loud that republicans have just been implying or hinting at over the years so it makes sense that they would flock to him because he's the kind of candidate the Republican party claims to have always wanted.

It's not going to play out well in the general but I still don't think Trump had any intention of winning the whole thing. Losing to Hilary Rodham Clinton is expected for anyone the Republicans put forward. I think Trump winning the nomination only comes off as weird if you think that the party who has nothing but short term thinking actually had a long term political plan and that their base wasn't basically just racist horrible garbage people.

So it was based on your opinion of what should happen rather than the facts of what was clearly happening. I know that already.

Bernie not dropping out isn't going to change things. If you think Clinton hasn't been preparing for Trump you're wrong. If you think it will be a drain on resources, you're also wrong because she's got practically unlimited funding. If you think it will give Democratic voters time to reconcile the lose of the candidate they wanted you're also wrong because for the people who would, they're already prepared to do that and for the people who wouldn't, they're not changing their mind anyway.

Remember when you guys were stating like a fact that Trump would never get this far. Ever. Such political foresight. wow.

And I'm not saying Bernie can still win but he won Indiana today. People are clearly still very excited to get their chance to vote for him. The more people that do the better chance there is of his message influencing politics. He does no harm to anyone staying in the race.
