And I guess officially… Luffy didn't meet Ace till AFTER Shanks left. Makes me wonder all the more what Shank's interest in Ace was. Was he aware he was Roger's son? Had stories gotten back to him of Luffy having a brother? Did they just meet on the sea somewhere along the way before Ace joined WB?

If you look back at the chapter that shows Ace's flashbacks there's a panel that shows Ace visiting Shanks and introducing himself as Luffy's brother.
