Knowing how much Oda hates people finding out his big plans in advance, I think he sacrificed accuracy here to be sure no one would guess what ラフテル should stand for. Only a person with zero idea of how "laugh" and "tale" are pronounced could have guessed it.

If it wasn't for Enel, the moon would be 100% it. It's downgraded to merely "likely" because something as random as Enel beating Luffy to his dream would be anti-climactic as fuck, but still it's the one that makes the most sense considering the characters, the scope of the story, and the reactions they both got.
@Skipped dialogue from Luffy and Roger: I think it's pretty clear that there is something going on here that Oda wants to hide. You just don't use that technique, let alone deliberately repeat it with identical reactions and all, if you're just going for a cool panel with the leit-motif of the manga.
Another thing here is this:
I'd wager that in the time between Roger's death and meeting Luffy, Shanks has heard people say "I will be PK!" hundreds of times. Hell, maybe even from Big Mom and/or Kaido themselves. So for him to think there was something special about Luffy saying something identical to Roger must mean that there was more to it than that catchphrase.

They need not to be that ancient. Out of 800 years since the formtion of WG, we mostly got the stories of past 40 years. Noland and Brook's pirate crew being the exception.If the elders are CDs, then they could be ex-ministers/royal commanders of the past.If they are commoners,they could be fleet admirals/Royal guards of bygone eras, now forgotten.Though I fully agree with Greg that they were perhaps quite badass in their times.
But at that point, if you're gonna make them immortal, why not from 800 years ago? Like what does the story gain from these wise council-type people who are clued in to the secret of the world and apparently are the direct retainers of its 'god', not being part of the main past event that frames the current world? I also think the absurdly strict hierarchy the OP world presents, where if you're not a CD you're literally subhuman in their eyes, makes it awkward to introduce the elders as commoners that rose through the ranks up to the point of becoming the leaders of the world.
Still stand by the notion that the Elders are immortals from the void century, probably generals or whatever that fought to bring down the ancient kingdom. I have a hard time picturing a way for the story to explain their scars, the guy with the sword, and their overall attitude (not to mention the fact that they looked exactly the same way during the Ohara flashback), if they have been born into the highest political sphere from the get-go or even are simply CDs from the highest-ranking families. Oda has made a point of constantly emphasizing how the CDs isolation from the world and position has made them spoiled, entitled pieces of shit, which is completely anathema to how the Elders are portrayed.
Also I think it's weird to think the "gray morality" that some people think they displayed is somehow eroded by the existence of one leader they take orders from. It's as if Imu himself necessarily has to be an Orochi-tier villain, he couldn't possibly have any agency or complicated thoughts about the world, right?
Well… yeah. That's exactly the kind of thing Croc would want to keep secret and it would ruin his image, and its exactly the thing inside Iva's wheelhouse. And its exactly the sort of surprise reveal Oda would relish keeping in his pocket for 20 years that would surprise and twist everything.
Go back and look at the episode 0 image of Croc (seen from the back suspiciously) and the picture from childhood, they're both feminine tomboy looking. Now, the shot fromt he back may just be to hide the scar or lack therof, same as Shanks, but...
Several of those are really loaded with backstory details.
Yeah, I know the theory, and I wouldn't put it past Oda, but… would it feel good for that to be it? Imagine the scenario: Croc suddenly turning on them, about to kill Inazuma or 2 or even drain Luffy's water, or anything, and Iva going "did you know HE WAS A GIRL?!?!?" as if that's something that would unironically stop him in his tracks. The whole context where this exchange happened wasn't really gag-like either. I'm not even opposed to the whole genderbend thing, but if that was all there was to it then it would be pretty meh.
I mean, leaving that aspect aside; would it feel good in the context of Croc's character that he would be so serious about that stuff to the point that Iva could claim to "take him out" by just disclosing the info or whatever? What, they're gonna laugh at him? Big deal. So even disregarding the meta reasons that make me think it'd be bad, there should be something more to it
You don't have to have an indepth super long flashback to show a character's backstory. Oda's done lots of quick smash cut flashbacks of less than a chapter and they've been fine.
We probably know the broad strokes of Croc's backstory anyway. She was a tough girl inspired by Roger's death. Wanted to be pirate king herself, saw Whitebeard as the next credible one, challenged him, and lost. (That may be when the scar came in.) Just couldn't do it under her own power. went to Ivonokov to become a strong man… but that still wasn't enough for the new world... so began plotting how to get to the top through trickery and ancient weapons rather than just sheerly by her own power.
Little details like growing up on the street, the exact order of events, and so on, we don't know, but the broad strokes are maybe there.
Imagine if the "weakness" Iva mentioned that was supposedly allowing them to keep Croc in check was something as idiotic and even problematic as "he used to be a girl lol!" though
I don't know why it would be like that but if the Tama=Hiyori thing was true the way it'd happen imo is that she (and the other retainer who would have to be the Tengu) got sent to a different time for some reason as of yet unexplained and the Tengu is hiding her identity. That would also explain why Kiku doesn't recognize her, since 20 years ago she was a toddler but now she's 8. I dunno what that kind of thing would add to the story though, like why Hiyori and her identity being hidden or not would be important for the plot, or why Toki would send them to that specific place in time.
Even going from conflicted world leaders who carefully play a game of chess with ever changing pieces to middle men/custodians who either carry out the will of or try to minimize the damage caused by said ruler feels like a pretty hefty change in direction for their characters.
I've been thinking about this and did we ever see them act in a way that evokes this whole 4D chess idea? Most of their presence is reduced to spouting exposition + cryptic futuretalk; their direct interactions with the larger world are condoning straight genocide (however much people think some shadowy half-frown excuses it) and being all giddy about Spandam's plan to steal an Ancient Weapon (doesn't this go completely against the idea that they want to maintain stasis in the world?). I guess they also got chewed on by Sakazuki and had no comeback to his sick bantz.
The Gorosei have always been more interesting because of the fantasies we generate around them than because of anything in the actual manga, if you ask me. They have been a pending account since forever, and their character as an institution hinges more on whatever the ancient backstory will turn out to be than whatever they do now. Our judgment of their vision and plan for the world is completely contingent on what the erased history ends up entailing.
I have to disagree. I don't think this changes that about them at all.
In fact it only solidifies in my mind the concept that they are essentially the WG versions of Garp in that they want to be as close to a position of power (as realistically possible for them) to be able to assist or potentially influence it in their own way.
How does this square with Gandhi's angry rant about big purges and calling the Nefertaris "traitors" in a way that sounds almost bitter?
I also get oracle vibes from this Imu individual. The cryptic way in which they ask for guidance seems more like "please tell us what you see" rather than "give us an order". Imu was also looking at the weird hat while holding the posters which adds to the whole esoteric angle.
There's something uneasy about the character. The ridiculous amounts of "…..." speech bubbles they've already been given in such short span makes me think there might be something wrong/atypical about them as a person. They might not even be a boss in the classical sense, even though the Gorosei bow to Imu's authority.
didn't pedro monologue some stuff about the SHs being the chosen ones that would bring the world to its "dawn" or whatever to Tamago, while not a single member of the SHs was there? hard to reconcile that with being a traitor.

@pudding theory: if the situation is something like Loki proposed to Pudding but she wanted none of it, depending on exactly how it played out she might not need to alter all memories. Maybe just altering BM's before she gets the chance to make the news public would be enough. Others on Totland just have to believe Lola was the one proposed to, not necessarily have their memories altered. It creates a way for the giants to dismiss Chiffon's fakeout attempt too: Loki was interested in Pudding, so BM offering Lola/Chiffon nonchalantly would seem like they are being made fun of, thus the supposed anger at BM.

It all depends on how Oda wants to handle the hunt for the 4th poneglyph+whatever happens after they have all 4. Not saying this section is gonna drag for years but I could see shorter (chapter-wise) trips around a larger amount of islands in order to get everything into place, and then they'll make the push for Raftel. I think we kinda have to see what the last island is, and why a place that seems to openly teach about poneglyphs and ancient history has gone untouched for so long
Did he ever say that we're going to see Fishman Karate Dojo? I only remember this one SBS where he was asked about where it's possible to learn Fishman Karate and Oda said that in Fishman Island, but didn't say anything about dojo or that we'd see it.

Okay, listen to this: There are people living in Raftel.
Why? because why wouldn't they? Unless the island is similar to the one Luffy trained in, there's no reason for some small group of the "Ancient Civilization" not to have remained in this unreachable island, and have descendants. If One Piece is really the Rio Poneglyhp (which seems at least plausible), Roger should know no one could ever do something with it unless they have a way to know what it says. That way could be people living in Raftel, who know the language naturally, who Roger met when he reached the island.
It's far fetched and actually not backed up by solid evidence, but I just feel like someone is in there.
I feel like when the true history is finally revealed, this thread will have much more life… I expect WWII-like exploits, and a token "Japan pride" subtle reference in it. It's a manga after all.

Of course not. But Oda excels at making things believable. There are a plethora of ways he could think of to make Luffy win, or tie with Big Mom, that aren't based on DBZ-like fights. But actually we don't even know how this whole mess is going to develop yet. Better wait for some chapters to see what he has in mind.

I actually like the nano-theory of Devil Fruits, but there is a huge problem with it - if Devil Fruits are caused by technology (which can be replicated), why is there only ever one of each fruit? Wouldn't it make sense if the government knows how to make them for them to replicate the really awesome fruits (such as Kuma's) and give them to all their top officers? What if all the Navy Captains and above had fruits as good as Kuma or even just as good as Kizaru? Pirates would be in deep shit.

I think since we are in the NW (well, at least when this saga ends) the pace of the story will be different than in first half of Grand Line. For what we know, it's really difficult to reach Raftel, as Roger says to WB in the latter's Flashback ("Do you want to know how to get to Raftel?") so I guess the pirates in the NW are not "GO STRAIGHT FORWARD", but they hang around the ocean, around the islands (we have 1 example of this in the "favorite" island of Kaidou, the guy says he goes there from time to time) because they don't know where the last island is, or they can't reach it.
So my guess is, we will know the majority of the NW faster than we knew the first half, and some part (I suppose a little part) of the series will be the SHs trying to get to Raftel, the "secret island" which seems impossible to reach. (I'm thinking the path to the island may be related to the Phoneglyps, because Roger was the only pirate that could read them and only them -for what we know- went to Raftel. SHs have Robin=advantage)

Also I don't think Oda would draw that panel for nothing, you know how he is with "little details" impacting later in the story (also Law's face there isn't like he just thinks "oh, "D." must be something important because Roger and BB have it and Strawhat too.", it's more like "What's coming is gonna be really big".)
I think the story of Fisher Tiger might possibly (and here's another Skypeia reference) be blown out of proportion and exaggerated into the tale all the Fish-Men and Mermaids/Mermen have come to know. Like the story of Noland The Liar back in Jaya. But I don't think we'll be treated to a full flashback like that story got to tie all the loose ends. We'll probably hear the truth from Jimbe or from Den since the poneglyphs are involved maybe the answers are engraved on that.

I think Law knows more than Oda lets us see. That's hinted when he says "D. you will be causing a storm again" or smth like that (don't want to search for the chap), and for his reason to help Luffy.. we will know it sooner or later.

I find it very plausible that he doesn't have interest in being a "normal" pirate at all (meaning he doesn't want to be the pirate king or that things) so he accepted being a Shichibukai for the WG to stop bothering him.
