The one thing the edited Fuinimation dub did better was translating relevant on-screen text. Wish that was still the standard.
Also, lollipop was a better edit than removing the cigarette entirely. If that edited dub had continued, Funimation would have had to remove a lot of animations of Sanji holding the cigarette up to his mouth.

Not sure about old issues of the magazine though. Actually that brings up a good point. English WSJ digital had the cleanest versions of some colorspreads and front page illustrations. Were those ever archived?
You were correct, it was surround sound speakers. These digital episodes have 5.1 English audio, first time that's available in HD!

The dub added at least one bit of Marvel-style meta humour to Marineford that took me out of it (a random Marine reacting to Mehawk saying something like 'woah, we have gotta stop calling that a sword' in a scene that was played completely straight in Japanese)
I think this is okay as long as it's done with anime-only filler. If we have to deal with egregious "woah he punched the other guy! so strong!" reaction shots, I'd rather they at least be funny.
Do the episodes have Funimation's usual visual edits like translated scene transition text?
Funimation had always pronounced samurai like that. It's always jarring when characters drop their entire personality to put on a proper Japanese accent when saying certain words and names.
I'm guessing we're gonna get more strict adherence to the official names list. So Elbaph, Ponegliff, etc. might make a reappearance.
Did DBS have any noticeable change in quality or creative freedom when Toei became more involved?
It probably wouldn't be that hard to just start chopping up dub audio until it syncs with the One Pace episodes.
They put out a few episodes with dual audio but abandoned that idea because the dub actually has quite a few timing differences especially with off-screen dialogue.
Dub-only is actually far easier to edit, but too many people prefer the sub, not to mention the dub is 400 episodes behind.
I really hope they don't abandon physical media. We'd lose out on extras, commentaries, behind the scenes, 5.1 audio… We were so close to Blu-Rays too.
Looks like they censored Bingo selling his family into slavery, and instead he only "abandoned" them. They even added an extra scene where he simply tells his wife to get lost. This makes Bingo seem more innocent and Komurasaki more cruel, when it was very morally gray in the manga.
Confusingly, one of the other simps talks about turning his family into money immediately after the flashback, so whatever.

Weekday airings are the whole reason DBZ took off in the US. Toei should be offering TV rights for dirt cheap in exchange for a weekday slot, it would be an extremely worthwhile investment for One Piece's popularity. You can't treat it as a cash cow in a country where no one's watching.
You're the third person I've seen say the outlines are generated with a filter? Are they not drawn deliberately thick using a pressure sensitive stylus (or possibly a fountain pen)? Look at Robin's nose, where one line is thicker than the other, or compare the lines on Franky's chin to his hair (in some frames).

Not really. It's much easier to cut out one long filler scene than the usual "second here, 5 seconds there" padding. And the meat of the Reverie scenes isn't that badly paced.
Yes, in 3D2Y and Episode of Sabo they reused a lot of voicework from Marineford.
Realistically, the best case scenario is that they add completely non-intrusive filler episodes and scenes that we can fast-forward through, instead of padding out canon material with repetitive reaction shots. Also don't waste good animation on filler scenes.
If Funimation was smart they would start a Wano simuldub IMMEDIATELY. I know they probably didn't have advanced warning that this was happening, but the artstyle change is going to generate massive hype akin to launching a brand new series. It's the best jumping on point they'll ever have IMO.
It's also a convenient way for them to insert the more marketable and ratings generating Strawhat crew into these episodes.
There's quite a bit of unreleased music throughout Whole Cake. Did you run into any trouble because of that? Scenes that you wished you could shorten and may return to later when you have the BGM?
While they're doing specials, I really hope they dub Episode of Luffy because that's the definitive version of Chapter 1.
When it comes to reusing audio, keep in mind that Funimation will sometime "massage" the voice recordings if a take is just slightly off from the required timing. If the Episode of East Blue lip flaps are similar enough, they can squash and stretch the original lines to make them work.

Speaking of which, they translated Miss Universe's amazing "Gold-dig-dig-dig" laugh as "My gold-digging self laughs". What a strange decision that clearly contradicts the voice track.
It used to say Second Gear / Third Gear, and the Funimation dub still uses that . The subs have no consistency.
They just left the setup for a joke hanging 'till next week, no payoff for Luffy being sad about his bounty.

I believe it was extended in the middle during Pudding's flashbacks. They looped the quiet glockenspiel part quite a few times more than is natural in service of adding more filler scenes.
Track 34 "Farewell" is especially nice and it features a reprise of one of the anime songs at 0:46 (Can't remember the name)
Isaac's theme is an exact copy of the Germa 66 theme.
Interesting that they're just now deciding to go with accents from the country the arc is based on, since they didn't do that for Water 7, Montblanc Noland wasn't French, etc. Although they've done western accents in the few cutaways to West Blue. I wonder if there's enough Japanese-American talent in LA to voice the Wano characters.

We'll probably never get any more dubbed specials unless they can justify tying it into a movie. Sucks because Episode of Luffy/Sabo are much better alternatives to their anime counterparts.
It doesn't seem like they're using the extra time to polish the dub any further. For example, Brook's New World song was kind of off-pitch. If they were really checking their work, they would have either brought Ian back for a second take, or applied some slight autotune.
Apparently VLC is messing with the famerate when converting from mkv to mp4, and now it's completely desynced. I'm choosing "keep original audio/video track" like always. Weird.
