      does a philosophical view still have as much relevancy this far into the future? I mean at what point will it be invalid?

      One of the greatest mathematician of the 20th century, Kurt Godel, was a Platonist. Werner Heisenberg supported this view too.
      Heraclitus's view that All things flow is still valid even today. And probably forever.
      Though Logic have developed much, Aristotle still remains the most influential logician ever.
      And many more examples.

      I would never say that I am better than someone in every aspect.
      And I think informing that I am being admired by first year philosophy students for philosophical ability is pretty fair. Originally I simply wanted to make the point that grades don't measure your real self-worth.
      If that comes off as asserting my absolute superiority, I apologize for being unclear.

      @BartArt:

      Whatever floats your boat dude. I'd just like to say that I think being humble is admirable and attractive in a person.

      To me, to be truly humble is about acknowledging one's actual ability while striving for the higher. The opposite of humility is self-complacency. The essence of humility is learning, and not watering down what one thinks of oneself or suppressing self-awareness.

      I see that even when we praise someone, we don't exactly want to see that person openly acknowledging our praises as true. And whereas we are pleased by praises, we are afraid of reciting the praises attributed to us. Is that a truthful and honest mentality, regardless of how odd or ordinary it is?

      Is it an act of humility to hide the fact that one is admired, which one knows to be true? If one avoids speaking out that fact, is one being true to oneself? What exactly is admirable about it? And who exactly does that kind of humility please?

      If one is truly humble, does one expect others to speak of themselves less than they actually are? Should one not instead focus on enhancing one's own ability, instead of being bothered by those who think highly of themselves? Does humility include being bothered by blunt self-acknowledgement in others?

      If I have annoyed you, my apology. If you are to point out the actual flaws in my thinking, I will be very pleased.
      Best wishes.

      How do you correct someone in a Philosophy class lol.
      Did they attribute quotes wrong??

      That happens sometimes, but often it is not about small things like that.
      For example, I objected when the teacher classified Nietzsche's ethics as deontological, and cited some of his writings (from memory) to demonstrate that was not the case.
      It is not all about information, but reasoning and other skills also. While most students here are passive in their learning, I am bold in critical thinking. You should know how dogmatic the education here is.
      Philosophy is not the only class I attend, of course.
      Though, do you guys really need to shift the topic toward me like that, lol?

      It is different in the class because:
      -I am nice to everyone
      -Helped them to study
      -My correction is correct
      -Didn't brag much about it.
      -Most of the time I am quiet, and only speak when the teacher say something wrong. And do so tactfully.
      -I know how to have fun.
      Got nicknamed 'professor'. Kinda like that eccentric, a little awkward but also quirky guy. Never showed the "I am superior to all of you' attitude. Never participated in conflicts between classmates.

      @crystal:
      In my first semester as philosophy major (which was the last half of 2012), I:
      -skipped half the classes and scored average on most subjects. (cuz I didn't care)
      -was admired by everyone in the class. Technically recognized as the smartest guy in the room whom everyone loves.
      -corrected teachers many times.
      -corrected a noted philosophy scholar in the country several times during my short presence in his class, and people started rumoring about me.
      -was invited to write for a magazine.
      Grades measure anything but your self-worth. Don't let the educational system decide for you who you are. Challenge authority when it is due. You are intelligent, and with enough passion, I believe the probability that you can succeed in your own way is pretty high.
      And don't worry about the happiness in the presence. It is pretty over-rated. Strenuous hard works pay in the long term.

      Best wishes.

      @cooldud_21:

      See, a certain degree of humility comes with having an open mind. When do you exactly start considering yourself superior to anyone? After one debate? After two? After a thousand? And what if, just after you consider yourself on a plane superior to someone, they, in their idiotic way, say something that is deep and profound and would have benefited you had you heard it on it's own merit. But with a sense of superiority is associated with an inherent intellectual bias. If you consider yourself superior to someone, you will not be open to their ideas. You can try to decouple those biases, but you cannot.

      I disagree. You have to prove that sense of superiority is intrinsically linked with intellectual bias on solid ground, and until then I am unconvinced of this idea. I would say that just because you consider yourself superior to someone doesn't mean you are unable to open to their idea. A valid point is a valid point no matter who says it. Nobody rational would reject an argument with ad hominem attack. 1+1=2 is true whether it is said by kenji or MK.

      If someone stops taking me seriously because I came across as a smug douchebag, wouldn't that be a tremendous intellectual bias? Suppose that I were indeed a smug douchebag, does it mean that I cannot provide any valid argument whatsoever? To even suppose that douchebaggery invalidates an argument is a tremendous intellectual bias already. That is certainly not how I process people's ideas. It is like disqualifying Einstein because he said that human stupidity was infinite.

      It is not like I was never be able to have effective communication with anyone here since I made this account. And it is not like the majority of people here have never considered themselves superior to anyone. I would ask whether you have ever considered yourself superior to anyone, but it seems like an inappropriate question. It is strange to say this, but I think I have my fair share of humility.

      Cheers.

      @Monkey:

      You really got into insane verbose wordy ivory tower things.

      I am into truth and self-mastery and world-betterment, and that's all there is to it. Academic acceptance and the likes are not my ends, but means. I couldn't care less about them otherwise. As for verbosity, I don't think I have been needlessly complicating things, and doing so is completely against my purpose. The complexity of my language is a side effect of my attempt to be as rigorous as possible.

      Another reason would be that my way of living is too hard for others to accept, so I may not be exactly direct about it when I give advice. I could keep complicated analyses to myself and just say: 'If loving yourself more helps you improve, then love yourself. If hating yourself more helps you improve, then hate yourself. Do anything that can help you improve. Pure and simple.' But I don't think many are in the emotional condition to accept such a simple and direct, if not ruthless, advice.

      well I figured "what would it be like if he did that with the very worst verbose wordy ivory towers things of all?".
      Get into Jaques Deridda. I want to see what sort of apocalypse this would cause.

      I have been meaning to read Derrida's own works, but haven't gotten around to do it. But from what I have read about him, I can't say we share the same tendency. I am a rationalist and pragmatist, and is utterly against post-modernism, post-structuralism and post-Heideggerian continental philosophy in general. Specifically, I follow reason where it leads, so the anti-logocentrism sentiment doesn't click with me. Admittedly I haven't fully explored this philosophical movement.

      I refrain from doing anything that doesn't bring about actual benefit, but I won't judge anyone before actually trying to understand them. Whether Derrida was just an obscurantist charlatan who loved to play around with complicated words, or a genuine misunderstood philosopher who couldn't express himself in a more comprehensible manner, I can't decide yet. Don't expect anything funny when I finally grasp this Deconstruction stuff, though.

      So are you one of those guys who feels he can't be bothered to talk to all these intellectual inferiors?

      I am always ready to earnestly discuss with anyone who enters the discussion with an open mind, a constructive attitude that does not merely stick to defending a preconceived position, but to reason together, to find out the answer, the solution together. Of course sometimes I also have to debate with those who don't have such attitude, but I never reject discussion with anyone based on their intellectual learning alone. I try to learn from anybody who has something I see worth learning, no matter what their history and position are.

      Cause I've noticed that you tend to bring up how above everything you feel you are in more or less subtle ways

      You are reading too much into it.:ninja:
      Though, it would be a lie if I say I don't consider myself superior to anyone. I am not out to be liked. Humility is pointless if it does not help me improve or prevents me from seeing things as they are and where I am actually standing. It does not matter whether I am seen as humble or haughty, nice or assholish; what matters is whether I am improving in the fastest, firmest, most efficient way possible. I cannot afford to let irrational pride and shame hinder my progress.

      But certainly I am not anything like OMG I WON AGAINST A POSTER WHO ARGUED THAT JINBEI COULDN'T JOIN BECAUSE HE WOULDN'T FIT THE DOOR I'M LIKE THE BESTEST MASTER DEBATER EVER ON THESE FORUMS I'M SO FUCKING PROUD OF IT I AM GONNA TITTLE MYSELF AGOG-SLAYER AND CELEBRATE THIS SO HARD!!!

      @Khainiwest:

      Then again you rarely have an argument to benefit you. It's quite sad you got the "best debater" award when you can't debate out of a paperbag 😐 Middle school level if that.

      Not participating in this argument, just a side note: Oddly enough, in this forum you will get respected as a debater if you rip mindbogglingly stupid posters apart, and MK is especially loud about that. It is like handing the Olympic medal to a normal athlete for winning against disabled athletes. People here don't often debate about anything that is actually debatable, and when they do, it is rarely civil. Not exactly unexpected from an online message board dedicated to a children comic book, though.
      Even more oddly, many people here think it is good sport and thrilling to go up against mentally 13 years old posters. Personally I find thrill in debating with professional academics and the likes in magazines or forums dedicated to their fields. But I guess everyone has their own taste.

      On the shoes topic: I dare you to walk into my house with your shoes on.

      ! http://img.soaringrabbit.com/prick.png

      All three parties involved are shallow, so I wouldn't defend any of them.
      In defense of genuine intellectuals (who are nothing like John):
      1. Intellectual courage: any true intellectual wouldn't be timid or afraid of speaking his mind. Intellectual cowardice is more despised in intellectual circle than in anywhere else.
      2. Intellectual honesty: any true intellectual wouldn't pretend to understand what he doesn't actually understand.
      3. Intellectual integrity: anyone who tries to appear smart to get girls, i.e whoring his pseudo-intellectuality for carnal desire, is not a true intellectual.
      As for your physique, how good you are in bed, how potent you are in impregnating females, how much you go out: any girl who put first importance in those factors aren't fit for anyone with serious intellectual interest in the first place. Again, there are plenty of girls with intellectual interests, or girls who aren't intellectual but appreciate intellectual devotion. Those who do not share mutual interests can hardly find each other interesting.
