Hey, by the way, what do I do with the translations? Haha, I did a couple chapters, but I had no idea what to do with them ^^

Not only does Stephen's translation say so, the original Japanese says so. Reason enough to call Smoker a "commodore"? Would this not make you the noob now for using English (badly translated English, at that) as your sole proof that we're all noobs? ;-)

I can translate to and from Japanese perfectly, but I'm not entirely sure I want to waste my life working for somebody who's apparently an egotistical, hardheaded butthole who doesn't know how to type properly =\ If you could convince me that you're worth my time, sure I can do it without a problem.

Btw, out of interest, does "translating" include typesetting? Because if it includes typesetting for 430 chapters, that's quite a time commitment.

(As for credentials, I'm Japanese-born-in-America, native of both languages. Attended school in both languages throughout my school career, and am at about the 2nd kyu in terms of kanji proficiency (that's high school level… way above comic stuff).)

From what it says in the text, it only says "Are Luffy and Ace adopted brothers?" As in "non-blood brothers." Sorry if my translation was kinda confusing~

And it only asks if they're not blood brothers due to their different last names, so I think it's implied that Garp, Dragon, and Luffy are all directly related by blood.

Ace's profile says "Whitebeard's Second Troop Leader. Currently sailing alone, traveling separately from the main ship."

However…. In the bubble above that with Garp's picture, it says: "Luffy and Ace are adopted brothers? Ace trained with Luffy.... Why are their last names different...?"

Um…. I don't know where you learned this, but "nii chan" and "nee chan" are not exclusively for family members…

I'm sure all of you know "ojisan" or "jii chan", right? The first one is used as "older man," then second one as "old man." But in a literal sense, it's actually "uncle" and "grandpa." In the same way, "nii chan" and "nee chan" are very, very often used to refer to a boy or girl that's slightly older than you.

You're right, Fire First Ace, that aniki and aneki are indeed sometimes used to refer to friends, but I would far more often use nii chan and nee chan…

The text explicitly says "the map of the Grand Line." However, judging from pictures we see (from when they talk to Gaimon and when they actually enter the Grand Line), it's clear that the map shows the intersection between the Red Line and the Grand Line - aka the entrance to the Grand Line. So yeah, everything we've seen so far shows that it's a map to the Grand Line. I'm really inclined to think that this is just a miswording on Oda's part, but, I must stress this, everything we say here is only speculation on our part, and is not by any means 100% correct. Well, there are my two cents on the subject… I s'ppose it's up for debate though.

In response to Ramza's new point…. Actually, in the original Japanese text, everything in Volume 3 says the "map of the Grandline," not to it. In the page 63 thing you pointed out, the original text still states the map "of" the Grandline (I'd look farther, but I'm much too lazy). I'm pretty sure the fact that there are so many routes in the Grandline and that it's not possible to navigate through without Log Posts are plot twists that Oda came up with later on, and thus don't agree with earlier points.

Seriously…. It's people like Fire that make us Japanese people look bad -___- For those of you who don't know too many Japanese people, please, please don't base your opinion of us on people like him.

Anyhow, back on topic. As it's been stated some times above, yes, Gaimon said that it's been "twenty-some" years since the "Great Pirate Era" began. I'd understand foreigners with limited Japanese backgrounds misunderstanding this phrase, because the character used for that "some" is pretty uncommon in that context… And I completely second Fire's translation of that one page, that Usopp only says that it'll take 2 years for a normal person to heal. There has been no statement thus far (to my knowledge, in the manga at least) that said anything to disprove that it's been 22 years since the execution of Gol. D. Roger.

Sorry Ramza, but your point was, although valid considering the information you had, very, very weak. I think so far the closest shot was by Sogeking D. Usopp, but it's still kinda a weak argument =\ It's really pretty impossible to decide 100% accurately how long each time skip is, you know?

Nope, the whole thing talks about how Toriyama thought of the DBZ world and stuff… Mainly all pre-manga-"how-did-Toriyama-think-of-this" stuff.

As for the original topic of whether the interview is real or not, I highly doubt it. The name Super Otaku rings no bell iｎ my head, and, as others have said, a Google search reveals nothing about the book. And, I agree with Greg that the name isn't real... Neither the first nor last name is in real Japanese, and it's hard to think that anybody would use a "nom de plume" that's that bizarre.

Oh no, that's not about intonation. Saying "read" in a high pitch, low pitch, dropping pitch, or rising pitch won't change the meaning… I'm saying that in Japanese, by changing the pitch of each syllable (not the pronounciation), the meaning changes.

And btw, the whole thing with English and how one set of spelling can be pronounced multiple ways is one of the main reasons I think English is such a retarded language.... And also the reason why I like Spanish and French more ;-) (Although French also has the pronunciation irregularities to a lesser extent)

Like I said, by whether you inflect up or down on the word "kami", it can either mean paper or God. So yes, the tones change the meaning of the words…. Let's see... another good example... =\ Oh, I know. In Japanese, we have this phrase, "umi no oya", which means a genetic parent. By inflecting differently on "umi", that phrase would mean "the parent of the sea". So yes, tone is important, but as far as I see, not as important as it is in Chinese

Not in the sense of Chinese tones… In Chinese, you change your intonation within one syllable, whereas in Japanese, you switch between two syllables (Paper: (low)ka(hi)mi, God: (hi)ka(low)mi)… One of the many little known facts about the Japanese language :happy: Most people'd understand you either way though, lol. And many Japanese people have trouble with some of the accents too (I'd always thought that the intonation in "bear" went down, not up, and just recently realized I was wrong)... And I think what really throws foreigners off is that the tone can change depending on whether you add another word before or after it =P Heck, they even sell these books called "accent dictionaries" that just list pretty much every word in the Japanese language and show how they're accented :wassat:

Yes yes, I know they have different kanji (I'm Japanese, duh =P)…. But as far as my knowledge goes, Oda writes all of the DF names in katakana. I'm not 100% sure, but I recall Kalipha's "awa awa no mi" was written アワアワの実 instead of the kanji: 泡泡の実. So yeah, your point is moot :-) And, btw, if you want to go that far into the analysis of the difference between paper and God in Japanese, they're pronounced differently too =P The intonation on paper goes up, whereas it goes down in God.

And yes, you're right. Moku moku doesn't mean smoke... It's an "onomatapeia" of a sense to express cloudy things. I s'ppose you can say that's one reason there wouldn't be a cloud or fog fruit, since "moku moku" does sorta cover that too (Although those two would have perfect names: kumo kumo no mi (can double as the spider fruit =D) and kiri kiri no mi). Another example of this would be Ace's "mera mera no mi".... Mera mera is another onomatopeia, but for fire.

So yeah, y'all have to remember, the DF names are comprised of a two-syllable phrase repeated twice... This would mean that there are at max 5041 possible names for a fruit (there are 71 letters in the extended Japanese alphabet) =P Keep in mind that probably 90% of these would form senseless words, so you're looking at about 500 possible DFs… Of course, most of these would be pretty retarded ideas (the bread bread fruit! The plate fruit! The baka baka no mi =D), so we're probably looking at about 100~200 decent possible fruits =P Among those, there's probably like, 50 half-decent logia possibilities (Btw, no, I'm not going to go through all 5041 possiblilities to find the possible Logia fruits =P)...

Hrmmm…. I hate to be the pessimist of the group, but, as much as I like some of these ideas, I find it extremely hard to think of a two-syllable "catch phrase" for the fruits to go by =\ I mean, it seems some of the people here are forgetting another requirement of devil fruits: the repeated two-syllable name. Sure, a bunch of your ideas can easily fit into this, but I'm thinking that most of them can't (The paper fruit, kami-kami no mi, can double as the "God God" fruit =D (Kami means both paper and God in Japanese))…

Everybody seems to be taking this "favor" that AoKiji owes to Luffy's grandfather way too literally…. Looking at the original Japanese text, there are dots next to "favor", so the whole sentence takes on a sarcastic flavor and is like "I owe a favor to your grandfather". This makes it seem more like Luffy's grandfather did something bad to Aokiji, does it not?

Keeping this in mind, would it be that unusual for Gol D Roger to be Luffy's grandfather? Maybe Gol was the only person ever to beat AoKiji in a fight? Maybe AoKiji got some major injury while trying to catch Gol? The possibilities are still endless, but at least it makes more sense now, right ;-)?

Erm…. I don't know about the translations, but Roger was never said to have been executed exactly 20 years ago… Not to my knowledge, at least. The only reference I remember mentioning "20 years" was when Gaemon (the one stuck in the treasure chest) said "It's been 20 few years since the great pirate age started". When he said that, he used a phrase that most foreigners wouldn't know, so maybe the translators just skipped it and said "20 years".

It most definitely says "He, hachi wo shitteru no kai. Itteoku ga, yatsu wa boku no teki janakatta yo."

And now, if you have some knowledge of Japanese, you'd know that that literally means, "Hm, so you know Hatchi. Just to let you know, he wasn't my enemy."

However, in Japanese, we actually use "teki janai", literally "not an enemy" to mean something along the lines of "to not be a challenge"…. Therefore, what that 8-armed swordsman is saying is: "He wasn't a challenge to me", in other words, he's saying that Hatchi was significantly weaker than him.

It could partly be the fact that you guys are reading the fan-translated manga and watching the dubbed anime… I must say, a lot of emotions and expressions get removed in the translation process, especially when translated by amateurs like us. In the anime, you're hearing the manga as it was originally intended to be - in Japanese.

Well, I wish I could participate more in this discussion, but seeing that I've never watched the anime before, it would be pretty hard for me to decide which is better =P

I'm thinking, judging from your old posts, that most of your mistakes were either simply typographical or slight misuse, but then again, I'm not sure - maybe break has melted away your brain Btw, お楽しみに is only used impersonally... You wouldn't use it to say "I'm looking forward to it", but rather "Look forward to it"....

Man, but it's so hard to correct other people's writing... If you want to make it sound more "correct", then you'd end up completely changing the words and moving things around... I don't like doing this, so it ends up just being "grammatically correct" but weird-sounding =\ Oh well, I'll leave now before I confuse you any more

Very true, Tank252ca… Once you learn a European language, the others get a lot easier. If you know English, you have a fair base in both the romance languages and the Germanic languages, if you know a romance language, learning the others is easy, and if you know a Germanic language, learning the others is easy as well.

Too bad that isn't always the case with Asian languages -_____- I know Japanese as a first language, but I'm struggling with both Chinese and Korean =[

I'm sorry, but I most definitely have to take ooshi's side…. I haven't watched too many dubbed anime, but I know for sure that, regardless of the voice actors, so many things simply don't translate.

When there's a pun in Japanese (which is the case with most Japanese jokes), they can never translate into English. Then they have to either completely change the joke or translate the joke literally, making a retarded statement. So most "official" translators take the first path and change the joke. But what if the object of the joke is shown on the screen? Then the audio and video are saying completely different things, muddling the idea a great deal. A perfect example of this is the "wolf fang" that came up in the last OP chapter... "Wolf fang" is pronounced the same way that you can end a sentence in Japanese... So how do you translate that? Just skip it?

Also, in Japanese, the sentence structure is so different from English, that the tension created in many scenes doesn't translate over into English. How so? Let's take the "Just leave it... to luck!" line from the recent OP chapters... In Japanese, the way it's said actually makes the "just leave it" part mean "leave it to me", then by adding "to luck", it changes the meaning of the sentence. This does NOT work in English. How do I know? I spent 15 minutes trying to decide how to translate that when Zoro said it the first time... Trust me, this can't be translated.

The "general" idea is, but the specifics aren't even close to matching up.

Nope, most definitely not. Look at the font it's written in (It looks a bit shaky)… that's the font they use when somebody is/is getting injured. And in Japanese, Buffet = "Byuffe". Trust me on this one~ Japanese is my first language =P

I've never watched/read Naruto, so it's hard for me to say, but my guess is that by "speaks like a woman" you mean he ends his sentences with "-wa", yeah? It's hard to tell in written language, but that's most likely a different dialect… It's written the same way, but it's actually accented differently. So yeah, they're completely different, and he probably isn't talking like a girl. Although most people don't seem to know this, like in Chinese, there are many dialects in Japanese. Mostly they are fairly similar to "hyoujungo" (the standard), but some are so different that you can't even understand it. Anyhow, I'm sorta going off-topic here, so I'll just stop at that...

I'm guessing the translation you read translated "soshite" as "then", but it also means "and"

Just be glad that they do have a return policy ^.^ And btw, according to the TRS site, the return policy is 6 months, not 90 days (3 months).

My opinion on TRS is that it works far better with European languages that use the Roman Alphabet… The Spanish and French ones helped me a lot more than the Chinese and Korean ones did. And be sure to check the site that Carly posted! I checked it out, and it's more than decent (I'd say it helps way more than TRS)...

Hm….. It would seem you've been offended by my last post, but I still can't quite figure out why... But well, let me get down to the point then - if you're planning on buying TRS, it's most likely not worth it, 'cause many online sites have most of the things taught in TRS (And plus you can learn pronounciation and stuff from watching anime, I guess).... But if you're planning on DLing it, I guess then you might as well give it a shot.

Rosetta Stone is…. Ok for vocab building, I guess. Their so called immersion is really not all that immersive =P I have the program for Spanish, French, Chinese, and Korean, but as far as I saw, they never really train your sentence building so much.... You learn a bunch of random words, phrases, and sentences, but you never really learn to put it all together yourself.

If you're going to get Rosetta Stone, I'd advise you get some basic knowledge of the language beforehand. At least master all the subject pronouns and stuff, learn sentence structure (The difference between ha/ga/mo, ni/he, etc, etc). The problem is, if you do that, the first part of Rosetta Stone is EXTREMELY boring. All they teach is like "dog, cat, plane, sit, stand, eat, drink" and stuff.

Of course, you can't exactly skip over all of that, 'cause they do have some useful words that you probably wouldn't know…

Look at the amount of people in the poll that responded that they're Japanese =P That should hint to you that there aren't too many people living in Japan... Of course, there are people that aren't Japanese but live in Japan =\ Then again, there are Japanese people who don't live in Japan too (like me) so I think it all balances out, lol.... So yeah, I'd doubt that there'll be too many people from a specific ken =P

However, there may be some confusion as to how they match up with each other since I've seen different translations of what Mihawk says in response to Shanks asking him if he was there to fight. One is "i'm not interested in fighting" a man with one arm, they other is "i've given up hope of fighting" a man with one arm. I don't know Japanese but I'm inclined to agree with the former translation because Oda does have Mihawk declared as the strongest swordsman.

Hrm…. I just looked back to that chapter for the first time in a while, but... I can see why it's been translated both ways - it's a sentence with a nuance hard to catch if you aren't native.

Anyhow, I think the translation would read somewhere along the lines of "I've no intention of fighting a one-armed man like you"... My take on this is that Mihawk and Shanks used to be equals when Shanks had both his arms, but now that Shanks only has one arm, Mihawk no longer feels the need to fight him.

Of course, the language used is a little vague so I wouldn't be too surprised if Oda ends up taking this whole thing the other way.

Junkman, I'm guessing you're a French nationalist? Haha, as much as I enjoy reading the adventures of Astérix and Obélix, I don't know about a separate word just for the French comics =P

Don't take me wrong, I'm not trying to bash on French comics, though. It's just that simply enough, in Japanese, the word for comic is "manga". The word for comic in French is "bande-dessiné"… So by your logic, in English we should be calling Tintin a bande-dessiné... I just don't think that sounds as catchy as manga does, and that's the only reason French comics don't get their own word...
