I'm not happy about this game.
The primary reason I love the Dragon Quest series is because they have been able to stick to the original, classic routes of RPGing as no other series has.
However, they are subject to the "Let's Ruin Our Series and Make it an Action RPG for more money" just as the FF series is.
Until I hear something that redeems this game, DQVIII will forever be the "final Dragon Quest" in my mind.
For an American anime attempt, it did good.
I'm glad they didn't take a real sport and add shonen/fighting elements like most sports manga/anime (e.g. Prince of Tennis, Whistle!, Eyeshield 21).

Mangavolume doesn't work for me anymore, and Volume 6 on MSN is aparantly in a "Members-Only" area.

After beating Xenogears, I thought Xenosaga would be a sick playthrough.
Got stuck on some ghost boss; haven't played it since.
I saw someone make a comparison to Vagrant Story.
Did you guys know Vagrant Story takes place in Ivalice just like FFXII and FFT?
Someone told me and I didn't believe them, then I did research.
I never got that far into Vagrant Story since I got it and Metal Gear Solid 1 on the same day (there are actually are vague similarities between those two games actually. MGS1 felt like a dungeon crawler with guns more than anything. Just MGS1. If no one agrees with me then forget it).
I might give FFXII a chance, but I do enjoy Dragon Quest VIII far more so far.

I've always been a huge FF fan (not at a cosplay level or anything) but i still consider FF7, 8, and 10 tied as the greatest RPGs I have ever played, and trust me, I've played a lot of RPGs.
I'm all over Dragon Quest, Grandia, Suikoden, Star Ocean, Wild ARMs, ect. but this game…ugh..
I bought this game the day it came out and haven't touched it since. Well, I probably would've, but I got Metal Gear Solid 3 around the same time so.....
To me, the battle system is a negative change. FF has always been about change, but never did it actually affect the battle system (Well 10 was sorta different. ATB was gone, but it was still classicly turnbased).
The battle system and story just bored me and I never got into it.
I may when I finally beat Snake Eater.
How good does the plot get throughout the overall game?
