Am I the last holdout who still thinks Jimbei was the final crew member?

RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
We both have no clue who Joy Boy really is and what his prophecy truly might be – but we can agree that there seem to be different possible candidates that could accomplish it. Kaido says that "Luffy couldn't be Joy Boy either". Becoming Joy Boy is therefore something that you do, not something that happens to you. Luffy could have given up along the way, in nearly every single volume of the manga. He wasn't handed "power"; what became his advantage early on in the story, his devil fruit, was initially something that held him back and almost crushed his dreams (see both Luffy flashbacks).
He got lucky at times; yet one could argue that he created his luck through his kind spirit/compassion that helped him recruit loyal and driven companions. The kind of kindness that made a boat repair itself and cross the sea to save him and his friends. That made an old enemy sacrifice himself for him not once, but twice. That gave the most ambitious character of the story the resolve to give up his life for him (Zoro). Etc.
We tend to forget that he got awfully unlucky too. One of his brothers happened to cross the path of a Celestial Dragon on the first day of his pirate career. The other one forgot to learn haki despite spending years in the New World. Etc.None of this changes the fact that being born with a great destiny is the opposite of free will. And this story is about freedom.

RE: Chapter 1030: Echoing the Impermanence of All Things
I hated the Apoo/Drake stuff. This arc has gone on too long already and we don't need it. Same with CP0/the Marines. And I'm not even a little bit invested in whatever side plot Oda invented to give everyone something to do when their fights are over. Just stop, Oda.
I pretty much liked everything else though. Bringing back Kinemon's legs was genius. And as much as I love Big Mom, I'm ready for her to take some real damage. Yonko invulnerability makes Whitebeard look bad retroactively.

RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
Why are you avoiding the actual arguments that are relevant to the story?
ie the paragraph following the part you quotedBecause none of it is relevant at all unless one accepts your idea of what destiny is, and I hate long multi quote posts. I'm old, and I have no patience for that stuff.
-
RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
Destiny is the story you write moving backwards. It does not take away from the freedom in the choices you have made along the journey.
That is not what destiny means, although you're free to have whatever headcanon you want to, I suppose.
Perhaps Naruto is not your taste. Doesn't change the fact that it is a genre-defining manga and deserves respect.
Something doesn't deserve respect just because it made lots of money.

RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
How so?
Also, pay respects to Naruto
I thought I explained it pretty well in the part you highlighted. Being free and following a prearranged destiny are kind of polar opposites.
Also why would I respect Naruto when I clearly think it's bad? No.

RE: Chapter 1,022: The Stars Take the Stage
Daaaaang, Sanji kicked the SHIT out of Queen on the last page there. I can almost never figure out wtf is going on in manga fights and even I winced at that one. Please, Oda, actually draw clear panels for this fight without a bunch of background scribbles making it impossible to parse. I haven't been this excited about a teamup fight since Zoro & Usopp v. Kaku & Jabra.

RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
@Zik:
Well like I said you can do that for everything.
Make Joyboy and Rocks and Im and anybody else all the same person.
FTR, I disagree. We definitely do not have a billion names of mysterious characters. We barely have a dozen when it comes to the void century.
As far as when he chose to do it, seems to be an assumption that things need to be tying things up as if the series has 2 or even 5 years left when it does not.
I agree with you that assuming the story only has five years left is wishful thinking at best. And you make a good argument about Nika. It just annoys me. So I guess this is my emotional, knee-jerk response? I just don't like it. For the record, I don't mind Joyboy existing but if he ends up being Luffy or anything of the sort, I'll be really disappointed, since Luffy's whole journey is about being free and making him some kind of chosen one completely ruins that message. Kind of like Naruto, except fuck Naruto, it was awful from the beginning anyways.

RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
@Zik:
What exactly is the complication?
As is, its just another myth out in the world.
Obviously Oda had it mentioned for a reason and it'll be important when revealed.
Right now, we know nothing about it or what else its connected to so how can you say the story didn't need it?
Might as well say other random stuff about what the story doesn't need.
I'm saying it's not needed for the story because we already have about eleventy billion names, legends, important characters and so forth and instead of adding yet another Oda could have easily given whatever he plans for Nika to another character like Joyboy or Rocks or Captain John or my mom, you know, something that already exists.
It's time to start tying things up and making existing connections known, not adding even more random crap.
Honestly, IDK why I feel so strongly about this one, but it just really annoyed me when it came up. I'm irked. And I don't like to feel irked when reading One Piece.

RE: Chopper's forms
Its kinda sad to see how much they trusted family and how that bit them in the ass.
More like they were so arrogant they couldn't see what was right in front of their faces. Law obviously wanted nothing to do with them. He even told Caesar not to tell Joker he was there, which I'm sure Monet immediately told Doffy.
Even with information from Monet that Law was, if not openly, at least obviously doing SOMETHING against the Family, Doffy chose to let him stay there doing whatever he was doing all that time, and STILL deluded himself into thinking Law had just now decided to betray him. These people live in a totally different world than everyone else.

RE: The Great New World Discussion Thread
@Zar:
Imagine if Shiryu awakens his DF and turns other things invisible.
Zoro. In an invisible room. Invisible walls, invisible tables, invisible stairs. Invisible everything.
If that happens I hope Sanji runs past and gets to see Zoro run straight into solid nothingness over and over.
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH Yes please, all of the above
Actually, what if Zoro's predilection towards getting lost somehow works in the opposite way when everything is invisible and gives him flawless location abilities? Stupider things have happened.

RE: Hey, I guess?
Well if you're all caught up with One Piece I'd check out the Adventure of Dai remake that's running right now.
The manga is good too but the anime has a ton of moments that really pop in a 90s Toei way.I'm actually watching it, it's been quite good IMO. Gives me those nostalgic 90s feels.

That cancer comment is a complete lie. But Welcome :)
Fuck you. Fuck you so hard you never come back from it. What the hell is wrong with you?

RE: Chopper's forms
It just always bugged the shit out of me. I felt like maybe I had missed some information.

RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
Jack being a Fishman is probably the strangest thing in one piece. Why does he look nothing like a Fishman? I wonder if Oda will ever explain it.
It really is weird. I wonder if he's like 1/4 fishman or something, it would explain the underwater breathing and maybe the horns.

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
If I went to all the trouble of writing an intricately detailed and planned out work like One Piece I'd be hella pissed if someone just threw random other crap in there to amuse themselves. I'd like to assume that person no longer has a job with Oda.
-
RE: Official Wano Thread
Well, maybe. I just don't see him getting all despondent and changing his life philosophy over it like with Croc and Moria. I think he'd be bummed but then he'd get drunk and forget about it.
-
RE: Chopper's forms
Question. Why did Doflamingo's subordinates keep saying Law was a traitor and had betrayed them like they were surprised about it? Did they really think he still worked for them all those years later? The fuck?
-
RE: The Great New World Discussion Thread
Even if he can locate him with Haki, I imagine it would still be a nuisance. You know, just one more thing to keep track of. And I'm not sure how many things Zoro's brain can keep track of at once.

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
@Joy:
You think Marco is joining or will Oda find a different pheasant ?
It won't be, but I wish it was random Kuzan.
-
RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
The story didn't need Nika at all and would be better without the unnecessary added complication.

RE: Official Wano Thread
Crocodile and Moria are neither less unapologetically evil than the likes of Doflamingo. Big Mom or even Orochi.
That's not what I meant. They're obviously evil bastards. But they also have other, positive traits, like Moria braving Blackbeard's lair to get Absalom back, or Crocodile being damaged because he lost his crew. They both care/cared enough about other people to BE affected when they lost them. Can you really see Kaido giving a damn if, say, Jack died? He'd grumble about having to replace him but he wouldn't give a damn emotionally. That's what I mean. Or Doffy, who supposedly cares so much about his family but felt free to order his subordinates to die to save his SAD factory. Villains who have good points versus villains who are just complete dicks with no redeeming qualities.

It is so far, thanks. My surgery is on Tuesday. Please feel free to distract me from freaking out.

RE: Chapter 1,020: Robin vs Black Maria
The interactions between Brook and Robin were great, classic Straw Hat stuff. I also liked Robin telling Black Maria to go stuff her opinions about Sanji.
I'm so over Yamato, though. Just… done. Done talking about him, done reading about him getting nothing done, done done done. I don't think he'll join and I don't think he was necessary at all. Can't wait for Luffy to get back up there so we can be done with this part of the Kaido fight.

Hey, I guess?
Sooo… Basically I've been lurking off and on for awhile now but never bothered to register because typing on my tablet is a nuisance and my laptop died like... years ago. Anyways, I finally got a new computer and happen to have a lot of downtime due to having cancer at the moment so why not. I'm 40, female, married, and bored as hell being stuck in bed all day. Hopefully I don't get myself into too much trouble. :ninja:

RE: Official Wano Thread
@Sibersk:
There are small nuances, like his weird honor streak and courtesy towards his enemies that feel like hints towards a deeper motivation. It doesn't feel like we're supposed to see him as evil as most OP villains.
He feels more like a pre-timeskip villain in that regard. Since Hody, every villain has been an unapologetically evil, irredeemable jerk. Kaido has a bit more of the Crocodile or Moria in him, it seems.
Hi.
