RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
Which begs the question: were Kaido and King flying to MF? If so, how did Shanks intercept them? And if they went by ship: why waste so much time when you can fly instead?

RE: Chapter 1,023: Spitting Image
Mental health is an actual, serious issue. It shouldn't be used to poke fun at anyone here.
Got a list of them Very Serious Issues we aren't allowed to make fun of? So I know which books to burn.

RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
I don't think you could be such a high-ranking member of a Yonko army without knowing haki.
But.
The fact that there's been few if not zero attacks showcasing the Tobi's mastery of it is what mislaid most. 'Cause if the Tobi use haki, readers (myself included) expect the SHs to counter with haki–and thus far we have zero indication that Franky or Nami have it.

RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
Hi could anyone translate the timeline on Who's Who's card? Thanks in advance.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E-MizeJXMAAImRu?format=jpg&name=largeThat's a very tall cat.
I'd also be interested in that timeline. Is 00 chapter 0, the current in-story year, or… ?
Also also: I find the mispelled "CAT'S" to be so Oda-ish, especially with all the English availability he has on his team.

RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
Kaido wants a shogun to rule over WaNo.
Shoguns can only be male, historically (which is something the WaNo people adhere to, as we've seen with Kinemon's earlier sexist comments).
Kaido gets a daughter.
Well, shit.
How to solve this?
Yamato: "From now on I'm going to be known as Oden!"
Koido: "You what?"
"Yes. I'm Oden now."
"That dancing fool?"
"The great man that you killed!"
"A man you say?"
Hm…
A week later:
"Everyone, this is my son, Yamato. Future shogun of WaNo."
Problem solved. -
RE: One Piece digital-colored chapters by Shueisha v2
Red walls versus night-blue rooftop is actually a pretty genius visual decision. Props to whoever on the creative team came up with it. It also stays consistent with the blue oni/red oni typical of that Japanese historical period.

RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
Demon Princess and Demon Child. Yamato and Robin will be best buds.
-
RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
Like most said, at the time Oda was designing Yamato, he watched Versailles. He simply wanted a girl who tried to pass herself for a man in order to appear stronger/freer. No further identity issues. Just the daughter of an oppressor fancying herself alike the oppressed's hero.

Whatta surprise, social media setting fire to its one collective neuron over a nonissue and then demanding to see compensation from others for it.

people do have lives, yes
No shit.
You don't have to make up for 4 years of absence in a day's worth of posts, you know?

RE: Chapter 1,023: Spitting Image
@dirt:
1024 is coming out this weekend, so theoretically yes
Cheers.
I'm guessing Redon being late can swing either way: IRL reasons for the delay; or too interesting a chapter.

Changing the topic to something more related, and since I see nothing re in the first post:
Are we getting spoilers this week?

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
Us, anime droppers barely remember Chopper is also Pikachu.
I only found out last year that Pikachu was a chick.
-
RE: Chapter 1,023: Spitting Image
Oda would probably give Momo some goofy throwaway line like "Now that I'm big the world looks so small!" to justify his overcoming his vertigo.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
And here I thought this thread had already reached the highest possible level of BS with the Carrot "discussion". Leave it to the VA wars to prove me wrong.
! If anything, Carrot's hype is once more demolished by Yamato's :ninja:

Kuina's genes are all over that staircase.

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
It'd be interesting if the Punk Hazard kids and Kaido were modified based on the knowledge WG acquired by studying OP baby BM.

RE: Chapter 1,023: Spitting Image
There was probably no elemental bending on earth prior to the Lunarians and company coming down from their moons. And seeing someone make fire out of thin air might lead you to believe they're godlike.

RE: Chapter 1,023: Spitting Image
Well, I'm surprised official Viz didn’t translate the important line of Ushimaru being
"大剣豪" (Dai-Kengou, meaning great swordsman) in this chapter.
It’s important because only him, Mihawk and Ryuma have been classified as Dai-Kengou in all OP chapters till now.(According to Vivre Card, Vista is called Dai-Kengou as well, but maybe it's not 100% confirmed about it since editors have made mistakes about Vivre Card/Blue Deep..)
Zoro said his dream is to become the strongest Dai-Kengou in the world.

RE: Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary
That second pack is a bizarre collection of characters with some weird choices. And Kyoshiro and Komurasaki cards coming after Denjiro and Hiyori ones? Serving what purpose?!
Right? At times there's so little thought put into these. And I don't bite it that they were pressed by time either.
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
In my own headcannon, back in the days when One Piece was still a novelty and not much of the lore was alluded to by Oda, I always imagined the DFs as being created by the Ancient Kingdom ex novo, and not using already pre-existing creatures and/or races as a starting point. They needed weapons so they turned everything into a weapon. Is that a fire? Sure, let's put the "essence" of fire into a fruit so whomever eats it can control that element. That a table? Sure, let's make a fruit through which any person can become a table. Perhaps the bloodlines came afterwards, as part of the inherited will. Perhaps some logia users mingled together and their children started showing a limited, yet impressive, natural recreation of the parents' DF abilities.
-
RE: Volume 100 Predictions/Discussion
Ace and Yamato on either side of Luffy, one red, the other blue, both with flames albeit of different properties, one character forever stuck in the past, the other constantly looking at the future, one an inherited will, the other having inherited a will. I like where this is, symbolically, going.

RE: Theories That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread v.2
I think that would open the problem of why wouldn't the SHs simply get rid of all the obstacles on their way by sending them ahead in time. Why should we view BB, Akainu, or Imu as a threat when we have a deus ex machina that can eliminate even someone as strong and proficient with haki as Kaido.
-
RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)
And this is why us non-native speakers shouldn't try to guess word play puns
Keep that to yourself.
-
RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
I just realized that for the prophecy of the Sun God to happen, Wano must have a certain Shogun.
The Strawhats ride on a Sunny ship, built by the user of a Shogun robot. -
RE: ONE PIECE 7TH Popularity Poll!!
Seems that Yamato, Oden, Kiku, and Hiyori are the most popular characters introduced at Wano, and in the top 50 no less.
I can see why the former three, but Hiyori has been so boring that she might rival Rebecca if she starts weeping some.
-
RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
If the parallel with Oden is meant to continue, I wonder if:
1. Yamato will also meet someone who will leave her pregnant;
2. A baby will be born aboard the Sunny;
3. Luffy's journey, for that matter, will take at least 9 more months. -
RE: Notions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads
Elbaf with the giant trees as an autumn island would be pure visual porn: imagine how big and orange the leaves would be.
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
I'd honestly be disappointed if the entire D. mystery turned out to be a simple Double. Even the
smiley theory is more satisfying than a "Yup, they are the people who can eat not one but TWO DFs".

RE: Chapter 1,018: Jinbe Vs. Who's-Who
With how empty and hate-for-hate's-sake driven Hody was, I expect he'd have done the same had he gotten on the surface: get in some cul-de-sac village with no haki or DF users and bully the locals for kicks.
-
RE: The sun, the moon and the things that connect them
And, of course, there is also the proto-One Piece story: Romance Dawn.
-
RE: Chapter 1,018: Jinbe Vs. Who's-Who
To be honest I wish the cycle ends with Luffy. And if there has to be any spinnoffs or whatnot, it'd be in the past. Like in the void century. I just don't want One Piece to turn into Naruto
Oh, I don't think (=I don't hope) there will be any sequels/spinoffs. But One Piece is about being adventurous and learning about yourself by travelling the world. So One Piece has to end on a high adventurous note. And since by then Luffy would've already seen all there is to see, the only option is for him to play Shanks for a new kid and tell him to go chase his dream out there.

RE: Chapter 1,018: Jinbe Vs. Who's-Who
@Zik:
I mean exactly how many aliases can one mythical legend have?
Apollo, Phoebus, Aegletes , Helius , Lyceus, Phanaeus, Sol, etc.
And this is just looking at the Greek interpretation, without taking into consideration the Roman side.
-
RE: Chapter 1,018: Jinbe Vs. Who's-Who
@Zik:
Since everybody is recognizing and connecting the dots with the sun's significance along with already known importance of the moon, i'd question why not have one character sort of a symbol for each: Nika for the sun and Joyboy for the moon.
I get tue feeling Joyboy isn't Nina the Sun God. I mean exactly how many aliases can one mythical legend have?
Pure speculation ahead:
It may be that the factions of the Void Conflict are only two: moonies and earthers. Once the WG did what it did, coming together as the controlling entity we see it today, most of the moonies were exterminated, driven off, and/or enslaved.
At this point a new figure arises. A freer of slaves. Someone so charming and positive to be seen as beyond both the mentality of moonies and earthers. Hence he earns the epithet of Sun God. He's not Joy Boy (who being a D. is most likely a moonie), but someone either:
of hybrid descend, containing in his lineage only the best of winged and wing-less people;
or of an altogether different origin, perhaps an alien even to the aliens that used to live on the Moon. -
RE: Chapter 1,018: Jinbe Vs. Who's-Who
I see. Bummer. One of the few shortcomings of a php forum.
-
RE: Chapter 1,018: Jinbe Vs. Who's-Who
Like I said in the spoilers thread, while everything does seem to point towards Nika being Joy Boy, I actually wonder if Oda's going to take the inherited will theme further and make the two distinctive, with the former being a myth way back in time that served as inspiration for the former (who in turned served as inspiration for Roger, who inspired Luffy, who will one day inspire some other kid), creating a never ending cycle.
currently in an environment of facing the dark parts of our country's history
We can't think of our history as nothing but the good partsOh, so that's what's happening. And here I thought we'd already discarded positivism as incapable of giving us a full view of history.
On an unrelated note, how come mods can't be added to the ignore list? Surely in case of reprimands private messages could be used to bypass said list.

@Daz:
Ah, but then you have cases like Pappug
But since you're a great writer with a 20+ years series under your belt, you use this opportunity to comment on the fact that neither Pappug nor by extension the fishmen are animals, therefore subtly telling the audience that they do not deserve the discrimination they're getting and that they should be viewed on par with humans.

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
Kuma undid all of Luffy's damage and passed it on to Zoro, and that was considered by many as one of Zoro's most badass moments.
As long as Oda actually delivers on the side effects of "double damage" and Zoro is hobbled afterward, I'm okay with this.
Yes, the first time it was a cool moment.
This time? Even if Oda nails the after effects it will only be a copy of a hype moment.
Unless this leads to Zoro being used as S&M partner by King during their fight
Or
To an arc in which Zoro is benched, which in turn allows for another SH to shine,
Oda has no way to deliver this deus ex properly.Would it have been more acceptable if Law took him down to the basement and spent 30 minutes doing miracle surgery, and then Marco came by and applied some of his healing too to mend the broken bones and said "Okay, you're healed up but don't stress yourself too much"… when he would have stressed himself regardless?
More acceptable, because at least it wouldn't have been out of nowhere. People were already expecting Marco or Chopper to temporarily heal Zoro, even going as far as theorizing the use of the Oni virus in his recovery. As it stands, the Mink bean is purw BS.
What if someone had just gotten him a glass of milk and that instant healed and regrew his bones like it does for Luffy and Brook? (Yes, its always played as a post-drama gag, but it IS how healing milk works officially in OP)
That would've been even morw bull shit, if anything because a glass of milk would have no side effects.
The other avenues for a short term miracle cure were already there so it's not like this was the ONLY method Oda had available.. even if the execution is a little fussy.
No, which is exactly why this is even worse. Oda had other ways to bring back his precious Zoro to the battlefield. And he chose the one that had no build up and is pure nonsense, the Special Mink Milk they didn't even use when Jack was trashing their living homeland.
He's also the only crew member that would really be able to handle bonus pain as a side effect, so it makes sense if this isn't pulled out for every dire situation or near death encounter…
And that makes it even more boring. You're giving the miracle cure to the ONE character who can handle it, instead of using it on someone on whom the side effects could actually have, you know–-effects!
If we get another Sabondy situation where Zoro is bandaged and sidelined for the next arc, that's actually helpful for lowering the crew's power ceiling when they fight giants or whatever..
This is the only point where I agree with you. Is Zoro is sidelined for an entire arc, things MIGHT get interestig. Just might.

RE: Chapter 1,017: The Order
@Daz:
Come to think of it, is Tamas ability sort of a pseudo poseidon? Pseudo voice-of-all-things even? Like, through the power of Dango, what exactly stops her from encroaching on what were supposedly Shirahoshi and Momos claim to fame?
Imo, Tama's ability only works on animals. As in, on the lowest of creatures. Sea kings, Zunisha, and whatever else Oda comes up with for the air-element possess a higher awareness, quasi-human, so they'd negate Tama's DF by will alone.
However, by my own definition, only half of each smile user should fall victim to Tama's DF, as in: Babanuki should retain his will, but the elephant on his torso should be Tama's slave. So, in the end? I don't think Oda's thought it through.
-
RE: Chapter 1,017: The Order
Momo should've been the only Momotaro reference, and he, though his charisma, paralleling a young Luffy, should've convinced the three mythological animals to join him in his fight against Kaido (well, two animals, since the monkey was already on his side since Punk Hazard), ultimately replacing the dragon at the top of the Wano hierarchical ladder.
-
RE: Chapter 1,017: The Order
Aside from the whole bunch of times she was targeted by and almost killed by Ulti and Big Mom?
All situations resolved within the same page or the next. Nothing that could actually impress the reader since by the time he goes, "Oh, no, what now?" the entire premise is already exhausted.
Or how they lost her big doggie bodyguard?
She lost the monkey, too. Do you see anybody mourning their loss? Tama herself? They were non-entities used merely for padding time. Not even in-universe were they acknowledged aside from, "Oh, there he goes."
Or how they had to figure out how to broadcast her message to the biggest possible audience?
They didn't have to figure out shit. Maria happened by and Usopp proposed it. Don't pretend like it was a chapters-long issue.
Or how she had to sneak aboard an enemy ship and hide to get there in the first place?
Off-paneled. Perfect way to make me feel for some character: let her do stuff and me not seeing it. Man, is Tama struggling between them chapters, in Oda's imagination.
Or how she was helpless and attacked and kidnapped constantly at the start of the arc?
Those are the only times I kinda liked Tama: when she was a simple kid minding her business and BP pirates attacked her. None of that was kept once we reached Onigashima. In fact, I consider it a mistake having brought Tama, narratively, on the floating island. She should've stayed in the village, to help in the next act, after the miss collision.
There's no hurdles left because they already spent the last twenty five chapters jumping over them. For nearly eight months.
And she still has to stay out of trouble and survive the rest of this arc.C'mon, Robby, I've read smarter posts by you than this one. Do you really get the impression that Tama is struggling to do anything? This very chapter, the one obstacle thrown her way was removed the very next page.
-
RE: Chapter 1,017: The Order
Tama's power was established at the very very start of Wano, including its specific ability to affect Kaidou's troops, it's not exactly out of nowhere?
just because it was established on chapter 1 of the Wano Saga, doesn't mean that having a little plot device that can at will change the enemy into an ally is a well-thought-out or satisfying writing choice for that matter.
Had Luffy won every single encounter with Eneru, just to keep your Skypeia reference, just because he had been set up as a rubber boy in the first chapter it wouldn't have made it interesting either. Oda had to throw hurdles in Luffy's ways. There are no hurdles's in Tama's, aside from a half-page half-faint-out.
-
RE: Chapter 1,017: The Order
I doubt Chopper will leave Wano while it’s citizens suffer from the side effects of the fruits
I doubt Chopper will leave Punk Hazard without curing those poor, innocent kids. Oh, wait, he did. Sure he left them to Smoker, to supposedly ship them somewhere else where to get help, but it wouldn't be the first time Chopper disregards people suffering just to stick to "the plot".
Had any strawhat followed their characterization, Fishman Island would've been Nami's island, and Sanji would be rushing to tell Kaido that you don't let people starve for your own business.
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
Greg is there a chance Luffy is the reincarnation of Joy Boy?
I thought I remembered a chapter that implied Joy Boy would be reborn and that Luffy may be that reincarnation, but I can’t seem to find it
You're thinking of the two kings that the Seakings are waiting to be born and to meet up. It was brought up during Oden's flashback, and current theories peg the two as Shira and Momo, Poseidon and Uranus respectively.
IIRC, Joy Boy was only mentioned in relation to inherited will. He made a promise to Fishman Island and couldn't carry it out. But one day someone (not necessarily Joy Boy, and therefore not his reincarnation) will make good on that promise.
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
So Greg was messaged some somewhat-unfair criticism about the last batch of chapters.
Then someone thought it was best to jump in this threat and start calling names whomever criticised the chapters regardless of stance.
Sums up the internet experience in recent years.
Some of you have been brain-cell fried on the political propaganda, thinking if it's not white it has to be black, no shades in-between.
