Well that One Shot was pretty amazing. It's taken me a little while to warm up to Fujimoto's work and his style, but I'm a big fan now for sure.

I dunno if we have a general manga thread, so I'll take a chance and ask here instead.

So the last shonen I've been invested lately is One Piece and MHA, and a recurring criticism of both is that their fight sequences - while not bad - aren't their strong points. This made me curious what manga there are with fights that are considered top notch, and what constitutes such a fight. I can't remember reading any work in recent years where fighting was even the main draw.

The only one I can think of -at all- is the first half of Naruto.

To restate the question to fit the thread better, what manga would you recommend for someone who'd like to study some genuinely great battle sequences in comic format?

First series that comes to mind is Kengan Asura. I think it can be classified as a shonen, it can be a bit gory and violent but nothing like Berserk levels of dismemberment. Simplest way of describing it is that it's a Fighting Tournament manga. There's obviously more going on, especially in the 2nd part of the series, but the main thrust of the story is martial artists fighting and looking very cool doing it.

Yeah I was struggling with quite a few of the action shots too. Recently I feel like the action has been quite clear and easy to follow as well, but it's never been Horikoshi's strongest attribute.

I would've been absolutely fine with Kacchan, but I am very into Dynamight. The title of Great Explosion Murder God is suitably over the top, as befitting of Bakugo.

Even as a non-American, this result makes me pretty damn ecstatic. Lots of work to do still but you gotta take the wins where you can. Congratulations USA.

My first thought was that we just saw Bakugo have his quirk stolen, but then I remembered that AFO needs to use his hands to do that, also Endeavour was stabbed by those tendrils a couple of pages earlier so no stolen quirk this time. So the stakes here are either forced quirk activation to…fight Deku I guess? Or, death/paralysis kinda deal.

I'm going with quirk activation considering we have some loose plot threads to tie up with Kacchan(which I'm now convinced is his hero name) and the fact that at the start of the chapter Shigaraki thought to himself that he needed to find another quirk to take down Deku. We got a wee hint last chapter I feel with the brief mention of the training the two youngsters have been doing with Deku being unable to get the better of Bakugo and his quirk.

Altogether a great chapter.

We've seen half of it: 985-989, with the heroes getting more and more advantages. This chapter maximized that feeling.

I think 990-994 will be the opposite, with the villains taking the prominence. The heroes will be separated, there will be deaths and defeats.

I'm not saying this villain streak will end exactly in 994, volumes aren't usually that perfectly planned.

But I think Oda will leave some big heroic moment for Chapter 1,000, so I guess somewhere between 990-999 we will have the end of act 3 and the intermission (which may or not be longer than past ones). Then Act 4 starts either before or at chapter 1,000, but the big comeback moment happens in 1,000.

Chapter 1000 ending with the reveal of Gear 5 perhaps?

I am expecting few more quirks will spontaneously show up within Deku to save the total annihilation. Endavour's fate is still a toss up.

Yeah considering Nana's Float quirk was brought up in the arc before this (I think) it would be an opportune time for it to manifest. Although I'm not sure exactly how much use it would be right now, especially if Deku should presumably not be able to use it to a useful standard.

It is quite strange that OP has had relatively few polls in its time. Maybe due to the structure of the story and that new plotlines/characters aren't added quite as often as other shorter series means that frequent popularity polls would be a tad redundant?

Are popularity polls an editorial decision or does the creator of the manga just request to start one every year or two?

Yeah I like Kirishima well enough but outside of the main three in 1-A, he is definitely the one character that doesn’t need more spotlight right now. I’m hoping the fact that Machia isn’t actually down and out yet leaves open the possibility that Ashido could still have a part to play here.

If not this arc then maybe in the future she’ll have a real shining hero moment.

Just finished the first chapter of TLOU Part 2, so far so good and it is as tense and grim as I expected. Quick question if anyone that’s played it knows, can the clickers actually see you now? Cos I’m pretty sure they’ve been able to spot me a couple of times when I’ve been crouched and not moving at all.

All I know is, if All Might shows up I am going to be very upset.

I think Hawks did actually try and dodge roll out the way of Dabi’s attack but still got clipped by it. Even if he didn’t, I wouldn’t exactly blame him for not having colour of observation haki and not seeing an attack like that bursting through the wall out of nowhere.

I can't lie, this seriously bums me out. It's gonna be interesting seeing how they've progressed and just what the plot is going to be for this final arc, but I'd had thought we wouldn't have seen this for years.

In the interest of time, you may want to do the BE route last since you can just save your game before the break in the route and not have to do the first half of the game for a fourth time.

Yeah that's what I was planning to do, by that point going through the beginning stretch would probably be an absolute chore.

I haven't gone through them all, but now that I know the story I think the best order would be BL -> BE -> GD -> Church.
But that's assuming you'll go through all of them. If you don't have a lot of time for games then you probably won't do 4 runs - or at least not so close to each other that you'll still have the story details fresh in your mind -, so it's better to just pick whatever house you felt like you liked the most.

I'm assuming by Church you're referring to the other branching path for the BE? Yeah if I do ever get round to doing all 4 playthroughs, they'll be quite spread out so I probably will be fine with whatever I go for, but so far that order you've mentioned is the one I'll be doing, thanks.

Quick question if anyone could help us out regarding the "best" house run order. So I've started with the BE and a few months have went by, but today I saw on twitter that perhaps the BL seem to be the recommended starting house? Then the consensus alternates between GD next or BE, also there's 2 routes within the BE which is something I didn't know about.

Apologies if this a daft question and I'm being overly pernickety, but I'd like the to have the most effective playthrough cos I don't have a lot of time for games these days and need to try and get the most out of them that I can sometimes.

Got some Akira vibes with the destruction in this chapter. Obviously Otomo is in his own league when it comes to art but this felt a tad similar.

! Might be a bit out there but I wouldn’t be too surprised if Houken makes his way to Shin and Gyou’un turns against Zhao (per Rinshojou’s wishes on unification) and sacrifices himself to save Shin. Seeing him as the one capable of saving China or whatever. The fact that we didn’t get his masters 2nd order makes me think it’s a bit of a possibility.

Now I’m not one for fanservice/ecchi stuff in manga, just not a fan. Then Murata comes along and…hoo boy, he’s pretty good at drawing huh?

Yeah just had a look there. Chapter 436, a marine says it's an extraordinary case for a small crew to all have a bounty.

Has it been stated in the manga that it's unusual for every member of a crew to have a bounty? If that's been the case I'd probably put that down to the fact that the SH's are the main characters and maybe Oda doesn't want to have a bounty for every single pirate. Then again, it is Oda and he loves adding tons of detail to shit so that most likely wouldn't be the case.

Aside from Chopper every one of them is above Supernova, in Warlord territory. They're pretty high. ANd Luffy just got bumped to 1.5 billion. And the rest are probably all getting increases after Wano. So…

You know I never really thought about how they compared to some of the Warlords bounties (Croc and Hancock really) so yeah that does make them seem more…prestigious? Really I'm referring to Nami, Franky and Brook's bounties, probably just because they've yet to break the 100 million barrier. As you say, after Wano we're gonna be dealing with closer to endgame numbers, maybe.

Speaking of bounties, I still think it's kinda weird how some of the SH's bounties are kinda low considering what they've been involved in. Also in a meta sense with how far into the series we are.

! Whenever Hara focuses on a side character for a chapter or two it's usually very good, this is no exception. I already liked Shousa and now even more so, which makes this a real bitch.

Don't know what the actual contents of the chapter are so I could be jumping the gun, but with Levi dying I just can't really be arsed reading anymore. Which is something I didn't think I'd be saying with this particular fictional character.

Thanks KL. I'm not usually too bothered with a game guiding you along and holding your hand, probably why story driven single player games are my jam. So that won't be a huge issue for me. If the wee moments of weirdness are so infrequent throughout such a large game then fuck it, I'll just plow on through.

The social mechanics and the fact that you're just a bunch of high-school buds hanging out was definitely one of the main draws for me initially so it's nice to hear that's a highlight, alongside the general "coolness" and how slick it looks. In terms of the more…problematic side to it, I reckon as long as it's not a pervasive trend throughout the game I'll be able to cope. Hopefully I'll be able to put my personal hangups about the ickier side of otaku culture to the back of my mind.

So I've never played any of the Persona series and I've been meaning to get P5 for a while now but never quite got round to it. However, after hearing some of the criticisms you guys have of certain aspects of it and the series as a whole, namely homophobia and the like, along with other stuff I've heard regarding how some characters backstories are handled. It all makes me really uncomfortable and puts me off big time.

So am I being a big, dumb baby and need to realise it's a game that deals with adult themes or what?

! Maybe I am being too pessimistic but in recent years there's been a few series that took a real turn for the worse and just never recovered. Toriko and Beelzebub spring to mind. I don't think that's gonna happen with MHA but I can't help but have that same sinking feeling :sad:

! I don't think this has came as much of a surprise, it's been set up that something like this would happen. Doesn't mean it's necessarily a good development though. I really liked the fact that a main conflict of the series was gonna be All for One vs One for All​,​ it's thematically satisfying to me personally. Now, I don't really know what to feel about it all.

! Gut reaction-not a fan. Horikoshi has done a decent job so far of quirks having drawbacks so this doesn't mean instantaneous op Deku but honestly I can't say I like this.

! It's weird, for a long time I really did not like Levi at all and thought his huge popularity was baffling. (I still feel this way about Trafalgar Law…) But ever since Erwin died I've pretty much done a complete 180 and want him to somehow live a happy and content life after all this mess and if he comes to any harm I will be super upset!

I've never even read Rurouni Kenshin but seeing it on the cover of well known magazines makes me sick.
